Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow by choosing
the answers from the given options.
One of the greatest lessons I have learnt in my life is to pay as much attention to the
means of work as to its end. He was a great man from whom I learnt it, and his own
life was a practical demonstration of this great principle. I have been always learning
great lessons from that one principle, and it appears to me that all the secrets of success
are there : to pay as much attention to the means as to the end.
Our great defect in life is that we are so much drawn to the ideal, the goal is so
much more enchanting, so much more alluring, so much bigger in our mental horizon,
that we lose sight of the details altogether.
But whenever failure comes, if we analyse it critically, in ninety-nine percent of
the cases we shall find that it was because we did not pay attention to the means .....
we forget that it is the cause that produces the effect.
If we examine our own lives, we find that the greatest cause of sorrow is this : we
take up something, and put our whole energy on it ...... The bee came to sip honey, but
its feet stuck to the honey - pot and it could not get away. Again and again we find
ourselves in that state................. We want to get everything from nature, but we find in
the long run that nature takes everything from us - depletes us, and casts us aside.
The great secret of true success, of true happiness, then, is this : the man who asks
for no return, the perfectly unselfish man, is the most successful. It seems to be a
paradox....
Ask nothing; want nothing in return . Give what you have to give, it will come back
to you__________.

(i)
and this causes depletion of natural resources
(ii) and in the long run we emerge winners
(iii) but nature gives us as much as we take
(iv) but nature takes everything from us and depletes us.

(i)

(ii) what is expected does not happen
(iii) that has two opposite features
(iv) where the unexpected happens.
(e) What is the opposite of success ?

THE ECHOING GREEN
The sun does arise,
And make happy the skies,
The merry - bells ring
To welcome the spring;
The skylark and thrush,
The birds of the bush,
Sing louder around
To the bells cheerful sound,
While our sports shall be seen
On the Echoing Green.
Old John, with white hair,
Does laugh away care,
Sitting under the oak,
Among the old folk.
They laugh at our play,
And soon as they all say;
Such, such were the joys
When we all, girls and boys,
In our youth-time were seen
On the Echoing Green.
Till the little ones, weary,
No more can be merry;
The sun does descend,
And our sports have an end.
Round the laps of their mothers
Many sisters and brothers,
Like birds in the nest,
Are ready for rest,
And sport no more seen
On the darkening Green.
William Blake
