B.V.

Doshi
He belongs to an generation of architects who came in practise
after independence. Which was confronted with massive tasks of
constructing a new nation.
After his initial study in JJ school of architecture, he works with le
corbusier in Paris(1951-1954) ,as senior architect.
In 1955,he returned to India to supervise le Coebusiers projects
in ahemdabad and Chandighar.
He started his own studio vastu shilpa in 1955.
Doshi worked closely with Louis Kahn and Anant Raje, when Kahn
designed the campus of the Indian Institute of Management
Ahmedabad.
Most of B.V.Doshis projects/buildings are influenced by LeCorbusier.
He important works- IIM banglore(1977-85),CEPT(1968),Gandhi
labour Institute (1980-84),Hussain Doshi Gufa (1992-95),NIFT
(1997).

Building style & forms thatwould best express his ideas

Not all movements within the building will be symmetrical but will
shift axis to give unexpected experiencesand provide ambiguous /
dual impressions.
The diagonal angle established from t he gate
to front door generates a sense of mystery and
the axis changes from diagonal to orthogonal. It
heightens the impression and formalizes it.

And finally Aesthetic considerations will take into account local


symbolism, context, and associations.
Casting of shadows, breaking of mass, rhythms in the structure,
solids, voids, will be the mode of expression.

Sangath, is one of the best examples of the project, which shows his

Doshis work is a compelling mixture of the modern and the


traditional ,containing the most fundamental aspects of each.
His emphasis has not been on deriving a clearly recognizable
Indian architecture .but on a logical,theoritically archeology that will
lead on the principles behind the form.
