Welcome Back to High School!


Our objectives for today:
Help students make decisions, set goals, and take
necessary action to achieve goals.
Help students acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and
skills that contribute to effective learning in school
and across the lifespan.
Help students understand the relationship between
personal qualities, education and training, and the
world of work.

How to Help your Child Succeed in


High School
Monitor grades (GradeSpeed,
progress reports, report cards,
homework).
Communicate with teachers,
counselor, principal, etc.
Establish a study routine at
home.
Encourage time management
skills (planner, study schedule,
etc.).
Get help for your child (tutoring,
study websites, etc.).
Monitor and set limitations for
social media.
Know your childs friends.

Stay informed.
Talk to your child about school.
Get involved at Overton.
Encourage your child to
participate in school activities
at Overton.
Send your child to school on
time, every day.
Emphasize appropriate dress.
Require your child to be
respectful of everyone.
Praise your child often.

What is a credit?
A student will earn .5 of a credit at the end of each
semester if they have successfully passed that class.
Semester Average 1st 9 Weeks (40 %) + 2nd 9 Weeks (40%) + Midterm (20%)= 1st
Semester Average
3rd 9 Weeks (37.5%) + 4th 9 Weeks (37.5%) + TN Ready Exam
(25%)= 2nd Semester Average (TN Ready Course)
3rd 9 Weeks (40%) + 4th 9 Weeks (40%) + Final (20%)= 2nd
Semester Grade (Non-TN Ready Course)

The end of the semesters are December and May.

Diploma Options
Regular Diploma
Meet all credit requirements for MNPS.
Take required TN Ready assessments.

Honors
Meet all requirements for regular diploma AND
score at or above all of the following ACT
subject scores:
*English 18
*Math 22
*Science 23 *Reading 22

Diploma Options
Distinction
Meet all requirements for regular diploma, earn a GPA
of 85 or higher, AND complete one of the following:
Participate in one of the Governors Schools.
Participate in an All State musical organization.
Attain an ACT composite score of 31 or higher.
Score a 3 or higher on 2 or more AP exams.
Earn 12 or more hours of college credit.
Be a National Merit Finalist or Semi-Finalist.
Earn a Nationally Recognized Industry Certification.

Promotion Policy
To be a
10th Grader 7 Credits including1 English
credit and 1 Math credit (Integrated Math IB)
11th Grader 14 Credits including 2 English
credits and 2 Math credits
12th Grader 21 Credits including 3 English
credits and 3 Math credits

Most colleges look at the


G.P.A. first, when
determining if a student
could get accepted.

Encourage your child to work


hard on getting the
borderline grades up.
For example, the 91 in
History, or the 83 in Science.
When determining G.P.A.,
there is no difference
between an 85 and a 92.
