same elements such
as line and color.

GLE: The child becomes

aware of various forms of
expression.
SLE: Becomes aware of how
artists and musicians use
elements as rhythm, melody,
line, color, and pattern to
express ideas.
SLE: Begins to connect own
forms of expression to forms
of expression in the world
around; e.g, use of collage in
own work to use of collage in
picture books and artworks,
and use of particular musical
instruments.

their paintings in a final critique and explain the

elements involved.
Transfer Task: The students will be creating mini art gallery.
They will have 3 pieces in their showing. The first 2 will be the
lead up pieces to the final piece. They will be able to explain
that the first piece is about shape and texture, the second
about shape and line and the last piece will be about shape,
texture, and collage. The music for the art gallery will be the
piece that the students created.

Summary
This unit is for a Kindergarten class. This unit is an integration of art and
music. In the Kindergarten curriculum art and music are combined together and
called Creative Expression. They are asked to explore line, color, shape and texture
using multiple media ideas. The curriculum also states that the students are to
relate the use of line and color with artist and musicians. As well, to express
themselves using different art forms and use of musical instruments. Throughout
this unit students will be learning about shape in art and music. They will be
creating an art gallery for the school and community to visit. They will be creating
three pieces to put in the gallery. The first piece will be about shape and texture, the
second about line and shape and the third will be about shape, texture and collage.
The music will be created by the students and will be reflecting line, texture, and
shape. The children will be able to communicate that different art forms have
similar elements.

Rationale
This unit will be fun and exciting for Kindergarten children. At this age they
love art and are still excited about trying new things. They absolutely love playing
with instruments. This will appeal to all students because it is not gender specific,
involves those from all walks of life and all cultures use art and music in some form
or another. The students will be involved in a lot of group discussions, see some
demonstrations and use a lot of hands on activities.

Summary of Lessons
Lesson 1
For lesson one we will be discovering how leaves have different shapes. The
students will discover how when you do leaf rubbing they will produce different
textures. They will be doing several different rubbing and then making a collage on
a separate piece of paper. These will be the beginning of our art gallery. The
students will also be looking a work by Paul Klee, Highways and Byways. This work
was chosen to show what a piece of art looks can look like when you use different
textures and one basic shape.
Lesson 2
For this next lesson we will be looking at line and shape. We will also be looking a
work by Wassily Kandinsky. This piece will demonstrate the use of lines an
shape in an abstract art piece. We will begin with using body percussion. We will
then add in volume to express shape. This will lead us to creating our art project
which will involve the use of shapes and lines. We will then talk about how music
and art are the same and different. This project will be the next piece of our art
gallery.
Lesson 3
For this lesson we will be adding instruments to our body percussion and then
recording our piece of music. This will lead into working with collage in art. The
students will be experimenting with creating different shapes using a variety of
materials. They will use these shapes to create a collage. The students will be
shown a work by George Braque, Bottle and Musical Instruments 1918. They will see
how the different textures used to create the shapes adds interest to the art work.
They will be introduced the cubisim. We will discuss how we used both art forms as
a form of expression.

Creative Expression Objectives

GLE:

The Child explores self-expression through creative thought ad through

language, art, movement, music, and drama.
The child becomes aware of various forms of expression

SLE:
Experiments with line, color, shape, texture, and pattern in diverse
media to explore and express ideas.

Becomes aware of how artists and musicians use elements as rhythm,

melody, line, color, and pattern to express ideas.

Begins to connect own forms of expression to forms of expression in

the world around; e.g, use of collage in own work to use of collage in
picture books and artworks, and use of particular musical instruments.

Lesson 1
Learning objectives:

Students will explore the shapes of leaves

Students will experiment with texture using leaf rubbings

Students will compose a collage using their leaf rubbings

Materials

Highways and Byways, 1929, by Paul Klee image

A large variety of leaves and a tray to display some of the leaves

White paper for leaf rubbing

Colored and white paper for the background

Wax crayon and oil pastels

Glue

Scissors

Introduction (discussion and demonstration)

This is a work by Paul Klee called Highways and Byways, 1929. He did
a lot of abstract work. In this work you can see he used some different
textures. We will be doing our piece using textures.

Begin by showing the students a try of leaves

Discuss where leaves come form, and how they are all different

Have them feel a couple of the leaves

5

Ask what the leaves felt like?

Use the word texture to describe how leaf feels.

Today we are going to use the texture of the leaves to create picture

Show the students how to do a leaf rubbing. Make sure to show

them to experiment with different parts of the crayon.

How can we show the texture of the leaf?

When we are finished with the leaf rubbing. We will cut out the
leaves and glue them onto a paper like this (show example) to
make a picture

Send everyone to their seats

Body (studio activity)

At each table are some leaves that you can use for leaf rubbing do as
many as you can use as any different leaves as you want and use as
many colors as you want to. Make sure you write your name on the
back of each leaf.

Circulate to make sure everyone is on task and to help those who need
assistance.

Have them cut out their leaves and glue them onto a background of
their choice.

Make sure each student signs their art work.

Those who are finished early can begin a summary of what our art
pieces are about for the art gallery.

Closure (critique)

Tell me about the leaves we used for this art project

How did the leaves compare to the leaf rubbings. (look for the idea of
shape and texture)

How do they final pieces make you feel or what can you tell me about
the final piece?

Lesson 2 (This may take 2 classes)

Learning objectives

Students will experience how having different lines can add or distract
in music.

Students will experiment with shape using volume in music.

Student will see how lines can add to their art work.

Students will experiment using different shapes in their art work.

Materials

Hand drum

Wassily Kandinsky image of Composition VII

Paper

Black, red, yellow, and blue paint

Stamps of different shapes

Straight edges to use for making straight lines on painting

Introduction (experimenting and discussion)

Have the students sitting on the floor say the rhyme that we will use
for body percussion (I will provide rhyme later)

Have the students use body percussion with the rhyme. Now have
them listen while teacher plays the rhythm on the hand drum and
show them how it changes their experience with volume changes
(have them come up with that concept). Explain that this adds shape
to music.

Have the children add volume into the rhyme. (Try and divide it into
three different lines in preparation for the addition of instruments) This
also will show how we change music by adding in another line.

We are now going to go to our tables and show line and shape with art.

Body (studio activity)

This is an abstract painting using shapes and lines. This is a painting by

Wassily Kandinsky. Today we will be working on our own abstract
painting.

At each table there is red, yellow and blue paint. There is also stamps
of different shapes. There are three of each shape, one for each color.
There is also black paint that to be used for making lines. What is the
black paint for? What is the colored paint for?

You can use 1 or more shapes to create your picture. Remember the
more shape the more interest your piece has. And need to add lines to
the piece as well.

(write on the board and say) you need to have 3 or more shapes, can
you have 4, 7? Do they all have to be different? You need to have 6 or
more lines, can you have 3 lines? 8 lines?

Circulate to help students and to assess how they are composing their
pieces. Make reference to how we did line and shape with music.

Those who are finished early can begin a summary of what our art
pieces are about for the art gallery.

Conclusion (critique)

Have the students compare how musicians and artist use line and
shape.
8

Have students compare their art piece with Bottle and Musical
Instruments

Have a few volunteers have their piece critiqued. Give examples for
students. I liked the color you used for your shapes, but it would have
been nice to see more shapes. ( I liked how your lines did not match up
with the shapes because it makes the shapes look like they are deep in
the paper.)

Lesson 3 (This may take a few classes)

Learning Objectives

The students will use a variety of instruments to express line, texture

and collaboration.

The students will record their piece of music that they create with the
instruments

The students will use a variety of material to create shapes

The students will create a collage using their shapes

Materials

Image of Bottle and Musical Instruments 1918, George Braque

Yarn
9

Paper to paint and for background (maybe poster board for this)

Paint

Brushes, sponges, stamps, lines

Shapes

Introduction (Hands on musical collaboration)

Using the body percussion and rhyme form previous class have the
students have two to four lines.

Have them decide (on preselected instruments (sand blocks, rhythm

sticks, triangles, etc.))which instruments represent their line.

Once it is to a performance quality record their performance.

Now we are going to go create shapes from different materials, like our
instruments and then we are going to put them together to create our
art work, just like we did with the instruments.

Body (Studio Activity)

This is a work called Bottle and Musical Instruments, by George

Braque. He was an artist that used abstract art. He used cubism. This
is an example of how we can use different textures and shapes to
make a collage.

At each table there are different materials to make shapes, if you need
help getting started please raise your hand, and if you need more
materials raise your hand and I will get to you as soon as I can.

Let the students work at their pace creating this final piece. Once they
have finished creating their shapes have them glue them on a paper.
They can write about the textures they used in their piece.

Conclusion (critique)
10

Have the students walk through the art gallery. Have them look for
their favourite piece and explain why. Have them listen to how the
music (which they created) fits with the last piece.

This website has a focus on music, but it does include art as well. It states
how not only children love art and music but it also how it has positive
impacts on the brain. It is advocating for art and music. Please ignore that it
is promoting Kindermusik that is not why I choose this site. I liked how it
clearly states the benefits of music and art in an ECE classroom, as this is my
focus.

This website is great for all subject areas. It has lessons that integrates art
with math, science, music, P.E, social and more. My biggest criticism is that
much of the music/art integration involves creating instruments. There is
more that cold be connected, but it has some good ideas. Great for lesson
plan idea.

This website gives a history of the artist and some of his art works.
