R
Rylee Howerton is crowned the winner at the New Jersey Miss
Amazing pageant and is excited about advancing to the national
pageant, held in Chicago from June 30 through July 4.

ylee Howerton is the current reigning New

Jersey Miss Amazing Preteen, 10, daughter of
Julie and Jeffrey Howerton, and a 4th grade student at Winslow elementary school. In
December, Howerton won her age group at New Jerseys
Miss Amazing pageant, which showcases girls and women
with disabilities. The victory earned her a spot at next
months national pageant in Chicago. Now she has to raise
$1,500 for travel and lodging to compete.
Howerton is diagnosed with mosaic/partial trisomy 18,
primary generalized epilepsy and autism, but she doesn't
let that hold her back. An avid fisher woman, dancer and
aspiring actress and model, Howerton is excited about the
possibility of winning the national Miss Amazing Title. She
has worked very hard practicing her social skills for the
interview, and has even picked out the perfect dress to
wear during the gown competition.
Howerton, who just this year transferred into mainstream school from a specialized school for students with
multiple disabilities, has maintained straight As, and has
made academic progress by leaps and bounds.
Miss Amazing was founded in 2007 by a Nebraska
teenager, Jordan Somer, who was inspired by her volunteer
work with the Special Olympics. The pageant has spread to
30 states. New Jerseys is run by Upper Freehold teen
Mackenzie Van Den Bogart with help from her mother,
Cindy Van Den Bogart.

been working tirelessly to put together more
than 2,000 boxes of food, provided by the
organization Feed the Hungry, that will be
distributed on June 26 and June 28. Beyond
the free food, there will be more than
$20,000 in free giveaways. Stephanie
Esposito, publicist for the Festival of Life,
says, Even if you do not believe in the message, you can come and be blessed by the
things we are giving away.

events such as egg roulette; tic, tac, toe; connect 4; balloon relays; and popular song lyric challenges. There will also be pony rides, bouncy houses, fun
special guests, and much more."
Committee officials also announced that entertainment for the 2016 Festival
will be provided by Matt Adams, George Perez, and DJ Pepper Paul. In addition, the Jersey Fresh Festival Produce Stand will be selling loose produce and

Happy "30"th Birthday

To our daughter Danielle on June 19th. You have
been our rock for the past few months with everything
that has happened in our lives. We do not know what
we would have done without you by our sides. Thank
you for all that you did for us and continue to do. Your
Tyler and Brandon keep us going and busy. We cannot
wait to celebrate with you and the boys this week. We
love you and hope your day is as awesome as you are!

Happy Birthday
Our Angel, Andy
Andy, Happy 28th birthday in heaven. This is
the first one without you here to celebrate. We
miss you like crazy and wish we could bring you
back to us. Andy, we just want to hug you so
tight and never let you go. Life is not the same
without you. Your beautiful smile is missed by
everyone. Last year, I gave you your gifts, plus a
big bottle of Tide because Payton said you needed more! I can still hear your laughter along with
Payton's. Your little girl is missing you so much.
What we would do to have you here with us to celebrate and blow out your birthday candles. We will be celebrating with you on Thursday, June 23, with balloons
and cake and sending you hugs and kisses. We love you with all of our hearts and
will miss you till we meet in heaven. Happy Birthday, Our Angel, Andy.

Brother Team at Allen Associates Donates $5,000

to Project Graduation
Vineland High School's Project
Graduation received a huge financial
boost on recently when Robert and
Richard Allen of Allen Associates,
again donated $5,000 to help pay for
the event, according to Dr. Thomas
McCann, VHS Principal.
For more than a decade, the Allens
have donated more than $50,000 to
Project Graduation, a free all-night drug and alcohol-free party for seniors to
celebrate their high school graduation. The location for this celebration is
always a secret known only to a few of the organizers and never revealed to the
students until their actual arrival at the site.
A variety of school and community fundraisers have helped pay for the event
for the past several years. The cost of the event is about $60,000, including
transportation.
"We are very grateful for this latest, and most generous donation to help pay
for Project Graduation," said Dr. McCann. "Raising money for this event has been
very challenging because of the difficult economy, and this will really help. The
Allen brothers are famous for their generosity in supporting their alma mater."
Accepting the donation on behalf of the senior class was Jeff Martine, class
of 2016 president and Destiny Esquilin, liaison to student outreach.

New Jersey Audubon (NJA) has created a grant program focusing on soil and
water conservation within four main focal
areas in southern New Jersey. Farmers
and producers of the Greater Hammonton
area, Maurice and Upper Cohansey
Rivers, Upper Salem River area, and the
western Cape May Peninsula are eligible
to receive funding for projects addressing
resource concerns on their property. This
grant program is supported by the
William Penn Foundation and the
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation
and has the goal of protecting and conserving the regions chief source of freshwater, the Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer.
The Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer supplies 35 billion gallons of clean water to
South Jersey residents annually. The
aquifer spans a third of the state and
underlies part of every county in South
Jersey, with 65 percent of water consumed going to the public water supply
and much of the remainder to agricultural
irrigation. When combined with technical
and financial assistance programs from
the Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS), NJAs grants offset the
costs associated with a number of practices that build or preserve soil health,
conserve water, and protect water quality.
A large amount of irrigation water is
often lost to runoff, wind, and evaporation. By simply updating an irrigation system, a farm can bring its irrigation water
use efficiency from 55 percent up to 85
percent. Farmers can employ irrigation
water management by using special sensors to detect soil moisture levels to support more targeted water delivery, further
conserving water resources. A new irrigation systems fuel efficiency is often much
better than the old system, leading to significant cost savings on fuel as well.
NJA also offers funding for riparian
buffers to separate cropland from wetlands. Native grasses, shrubs, and trees
intercept runoff from crop fields, removing sediment and chemicals that would

otherwise enter streams and rivers. This

practice can prevent pollution and provide
shade, shelter, food, and other benefits to
wildlife.
In addition, NJA provides a dollar
amount per acre for practices such as
grassed waterways and diversions that
redirect pooling on agricultural land; cover
crops that suppress weeds and build nutrients in the soil; and reduced till practices
that allow organic material to build up
within the soil. These practices, and many
others, can all be employed to protect soil
and water resources on a property.

Festival goers can expect to see

Shuttlesworth preaching every night at 7
p.m. Revival Today Shuttleworths ministryis the organization that puts on
the Festival of Life, which is coming to
Vineland for the first time. The festival
has been hosted in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania and Clarksburg, West
Virginia in past years.
In an interview on YouTube with
WQPXs Northeast Current out of
Pennsylvania, Shuttlesworth, talks about
his ministry, saying, When I was eight
years old my parents sent me up to
change for bed, and when I went to get
my pajamas, when I looked up there
was an angel on the other side of the
bed, and said, God is reserving you for
the last period of time, to call people
who are now in darkness into the light,
before it is eternally too late. When
that happened, that stayed with me and
I knew exactly what I was going to do.
If religion is not your thing, do not
worry. Archuletta says, I am not a huge
fan of religion either. [The festival] is not
about a religion, it is about a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is a personal
relationship, not whether you were
sprinkled with water or not. Moving [the
Gospel] from a church setting to a park
setting we are trying to take the intimidation of going to church away. I understand people who may feel judged or
uncomfortable when they walk into a
church, and that is why they do not
want to go. I want people to come out
and have a good time.

There are six age groups, entry is free,

The difference with her coming out of

Rylees mom reports. My biggest hope is
that this whole experience helps to further her socially, and to show her that she
has potential, just like everyone else. That
really is my purpose.
Its working. Rylee has been out talking

Time Travel
This summer, you are invited to visit historical sites
that show the diversity of Cumberland County
through time.

{ 14 } the grapevine |

JUNE 22, 2016

heres a race of a different sort

planned for this summer that
doesnt require running shoes, a
track, a finish line or a registration fee. Beginning July 1, A Race
Through Time intends to put South
Jersey residents in touch with local history, with an incentive of prizes to be
awarded at a drawing on August 28, the
final day of the event. In those two
months, participants can experience the
richness of Cumberland County history by
leisurely traveling to a number of designated sites that will serve as both classroom and time machine.
A Race Through Time has been
organized by the Vineland Historical and
Antiquarian Society (VHAS) and the
Cumberland County Historical Society as
a unique summer event for area residents
and anyone else who has an interest in
participating. The idea for it came from
VHAS curator Patricia Martinelli.
I was driving into work one morning,
I think it was November of last year, and I
was just trying to think of new ways to
turn some positive attention to local history,
Martinelli explained. I started thinking
about how Cumberland County is a rather
unique region because it goes everywhere
from Bayside culture to the internal farming
and industry. Theres such a rich variety of
things that we have here that people who
visit one region dont always look at the
other parts of the county. So I thought this
would be a great way to tie everything
together to open peoples eyes to what the
region has to offer.
Martinelli explained that the concept is
based on lighthouse tours but added, I
dont think anyones ever applied this to
history sites. She reached out to Linda
Hruza-Jones, president of the
Cumberland County Historical Society
Board of Trustees, to see if the concept
had potential.
She liked the idea very much,
Martinelli reported, and we laid out the
ground rules for it. She came up with the
name A Race Through Time, which I
think is perfect for it, and we then
reached out to the other historical groups
in Cumberland County and everybody was
really excited about the idea.
Cumberland Countys heritage contains

a wealth of significant persons, events and

accomplishments. The area was settled by
a variety of cultures seeking religious freedom, business opportunity or a fresh start,
including the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape
tribe, a part of the Lenape group who
resided in Delaware and Maryland before
some migrated to South Jersey. William
Penn once owned close to 20,000 acres of
what would become most of Cumberland
County. After his death in 1718, Penns
heirs continued to own much of the eastern Cumberland County region, including
the sections that would develop into
Millville and Vineland.
To promote A Race Through Time,
Martinelli said the event is being advertised throughout the state, including local
media, the New Jersey State League of
Municipalities magazine and the marketing office of the New Jersey 350th
Anniversary Celebration. She reported
that attempts were made to reach out to
the Philadelphia media, but unfortunately they have not been forthcoming yet.
Nonetheless, there are plans to get the
word out to colleges in Pennsylvania and
Delaware in addition to those in New
Jersey.
If the program is successful,
Martinelli said, we can present it as a
template to the other South Jersey counties because we would love to see the
entire region come together to create one
monster history tour for all of South
Jerseys eight counties, something that
runs the length of summer, with different
prizes available in different regions, and
inspires people to take a look at us. Our
area does not get the kind of respect it
deserves and one of the ways we can
change peoples perceptions is to get them
out and looking around on an event like
this. Hopefully it will get people looking
at what we have to offer.
The VHAS curator explained that the
race is designed to allow the historical
sites to maintain their existing schedules
and to offer those interested the opportunity to participate in the tour at their
leisure. And the idea of prizes at the conclusion of the event, she said, should
add to the fun. I

Legend Award Honors Two Local Heroes

On Saturday, May 14, the Youth Alliance program, a faith-based nonprofit organization based
in Vineland, presented Jack Martine (pictured,
top) with the first-ever Legend Award in the memory of the late Michael Lopergolo, Jr.
Lopergolo, a self-directed business man whose
strong work ethic and passion for people, cooking
and animals allowed him to touch the lives of
many, passed away in December 2015 at 78 years
old. Described as a humble man by the many who
knew him, the Philadelphia native devoted much
of his time to those in need and was admired by
many in the region as a mentor.
My dad would never say no if someone asked
for help, says Terry Lopergolo-Carpenter, the oldest of Lopergolos six children. He was a backstage person that everyone needed, but everyone
didnt know.
Following this years initial presentation, the
Legend Award will be given out annually to someone that embodies the same selfless qualities that
made Lopergolo a hero to many.
Martine, head basketball coach for Vineland
High School, works at Veterans Memorial School
in Vineland as a math teacher. For more than 20
years he has married his love for basketballas
both a player and coachwith his desire to
inspire others. Emphasizing the importance of
discipline, respect and learning to his players, on
and off the court, Martine has touched the lives of
hundreds of athletes.
Jack is a great guy, says Pastor Preston Centuolo, founder of the Youth
Alliance. You dont get better than Jack Martine.
Pastor Centuolo has had the pleasure of working with both Lopergolo and
Martine and describes them both as dedicated and passionate role models.
Martine was given the inaugural Legend Award at the 17th annual Got Game
3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, hosted by the Youth Alliance in Vineland.
Hundreds came together to support the players while enjoying a day of camaraderie, music and basketball.
Since it was the first time the Legend Award was given out, the Youth Alliance
presented a special commemorative copy of the plaque to Donna Lopergolo
(pictured, bottom), wife of the late Mike Lopergolo, Jr.

I Downtown Vineland
{ BY RUSSELL SWANSON, EXEC. DIRECTOR, VDID / MAINSTREET VINELAND }

Stop, Look
Be Amazed
Take a moment to lookreally lookat whats
happening in Downtown Vineland.

{ 16 } the grapevine | JUNE 22, 2016

ometimes when we travel back

and forth in and out of downtown,
its hard to stop and think about
all thats going on all overin the
east end, west end, and center citythats
going to have a major impact on the future
of downtown Vineland.
Just take a moment to think about this,
starting at the eastern gateway to our
downtown. Further demolition and then
construction is going to begin very soon
on the south side of Landis Avenue
between East Avenue and Myrtle Street. A
beautiful combination of age-restricted
housing and retail will soon rise there to
truly enhance this entranceway to our
downtown. This is not to mention the
redevelopment of the Newcomb Hospital
site, which will also have a positive effect
on our downtown.
Moving to the 800 block, the Landis
Theater is going to be abuzz with activity
as the Bay Atlantic Symphony makes the
theater its Vineland home starting this
coming season and other musical and theater activity is being lined up. We also are
looking forward to the reopening of
Moris, thanks to a prospect from our last
broker tour, and the banquet hall is available for weddings, parties, and other functions.
Meanwhile, we have action in the
downtown blocks. We look forward to the
opening of a microbrewery on the 600
block. Microbreweries have been very
popular destinations in other Main Street
areas and we look forward to it being a
magnet for millennials and other age
groups here. Friends and Family Diner, at
Sixth and Landis, has been taking advantage of our Fourth Friday activities with a
karaoke night. Main Street Vineland
Business Development Director Robert
Scarpa has also been aggressively pursuing other exciting businesses for our
downtown.
Moving further west, the mini-parks at
the Boulevard and Landis have become
greater focal points. Volunteers from the
Police Athletic Leagues Girls In Action
and Vineland High Schools Interact Club
have joined us in beautifying the parks
with flowers and I must give shout-outs to

Design Team Chairperson Maryam Nassiri

and our Maintenance Man/Downtown
Ambassador Wayne Joslin, who have done
tremendous work in this regard. I must
also thank Ivy Acres of Vineland, which
has gone above and beyond the call of
duty in donating the flowers for these and
other projects. The southwest mini-park
also comes alive each Fourth Friday for
our Fitness and Film projects, the details
of which I outlined in last weeks column.
Lets move down to West and Landis
and see the former automobile dealership/dollar store on the southwest corner
being turned into a beautiful, spacious
clinic for our veterans.
As we head toward Delsea Drive, we
will see much more redevelopment work
going on at the Vineland Shopping Center,
turning that into a real shopping mecca.
Movement on that is in the works right
now.
Crossing Delsea Drive, a new food
shopping destination is in the works, as
Lidl, a German supermarket chain similar
to Aldis, is planning to open in space
across from Walmart.
This is just a quick tour of whats been
happening. A lot of the credit must go to
Scarpa, working with the City of
Vinelands Department of Economic
Developmentwho have been working
tirelessly to make all this a reality.
So, when people tell you that nothings
happening or changing downtown, just
show them the list in this column. While
youre at it, show them the Fourth Friday
list of events in last weeks column and
invite them to come down and see for
themselves.
***
Make downtown Vineland your destination for your shopping needs, as well as
for fun all year round. Save money on
gasoline, avoid the long lines at the big-box
stores, malls, and shopping centersand
also enjoy the events we have in town. I

Kids Help in Project PORTS

Boys & Girls Club members participated in Project
PORTS shell-bagging, which is an education and community-based oyster restoration program that targets elementary and middle school communities in New Jerseys
Delaware Bay Shore region. The strategy of Project
PORTS is to promote hands-on activities that present
basic scientific concepts and emphasize the local significance of the issues surrounding the oyster resource.
Oyster shells were dropped off in the Cunningham
School site's parking lot and Club members successfully
bagged over 497 bags to be brought back into the Bay to
help replenish the oyster population.
