The teacher let the

students know that
they would be
seeing this topic on
the AZ Merit. The
teacher also
explained where
they would see this
topic in college.

The teacher provided several

examples to have students to
compare the different
classifications of the real
number system. When Micah
didnt know an example of a
rational number you stuck with
him asking more probing
questions to help him
understand. Consider giving him
another example or going back
to him.

The teacher asked

students to explain
why a property
worked or why a
number falls under a
specific classification
in the real number
system.

The icebreaker
activity was a great
way to start the
class. It was great
to have students
see what interests
they have in
common with other
classmates.

Consider chunking
the lesson and
having students
doing something
between topics.
Possibly incorporate
the I do, we do, you

teacher provided a
worksheet but didnt
provide a structure
for students to
collaborate and
some seemed to be
just guessing or
copying their
neighbor.

The teacher called out questions

and let anyone answer. Students
were calling out for the most
part while some students raised
their hands and volunteered.
The same few students
participated in the whole class
discussion and many were not
involved. The teacher attempted
to use popsicle sticks to call
randomly on students but
students did not know the
answer in most cases. There
were many students who did not
participate in class discussion.
Most questions asked were low
level. There was no student to
student discussion during the

use a strategy such

Evidence: The students were on task for the most part. Some were taking notes but others were not. When given their worksheet
most students worked to answer the questions provided.

Evidence: The teacher provided the reasoning behind most of his questions. Students were given the information about the real
numbers system and properties. This was not rigorous and most questions asked required students to use the notes they just took.

Sample questions: Does anybody know what a natural number is? No Does anybody else want to give it a try? Doesnt comment and
then when someone calls out Does anybody know what that is? Someone calls out zero Does anybody know what integers are? Calls on
Vincent he doesnt know allows another person to answer Does anyone know what a rational number is? Calls on DeAndre and he
doesnt know. Teacher gave the answer instead. Does anyone know the first three digits of pi? Give me an example of a rational
number? What does equal? Why is a rational number? Why isnt an integer?
After discussing each of the categories the teacher said write this in your notes. Consider setting up expectations and giving directions
prior to beginning the lecture.
Counting numbers negative?
