Executive Summary

Based On Our Research SAS 60 Is Still Rarely Used In Southeast Asian Countries

Key Findings
The research has covered all 7 countries in the scope except Laos (not researched) and Bangladesh (failed to contact any
companies that have been identified),
Based on the interviews of distributors and customers within 6 countries, the current usage of SAS 60 in southeast Asian
countries is very rare. The reasons vary in different countries, in Vietnam, the interviewers complain the price of SAS 60 is high,
while in Indonesia, SAS is a brand new material on the market,
Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) and Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate (SLES) are still commonly used in many Southeast Asian
countries including Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia,
Among all the researched countries, Thailand is the most developed in textile industry, while according to some reports,
Indonesia, Vietnam, and Bangladesh have an bottleneck in dyeing and finishing,
Many large dyeing and finishing companies in some Southeast Asian countries e.g. Vietnam and Thailand are not local
companies, thus, the local staff does not know much information regarding to SAS application,
Among 22 confirmed (can offer upon request) companies, 11 of them are general chemical distributors, which they sell various
types of chemicals and are not focused in one specific type,
Based on the several quotations gathered from Thailand, SAS 60 in Thailand is relatively cheap compared to the price in China
(data collected in 2015), perhaps due to the different import taxes,
Language is not the only barrier when interviewing with companies in Southeast Asian countries, as many interviewees are not
willing to share sensitive information since they only prefer to talk with people based in their country,
Some undeveloped countries are hard to get in contact with, for Bangladesh, it is hard to get in touch with all identified
companies, either through email or telephone; for Myanmar, the phone signal is unstable,
The online resources in certain countries are limited, many companies cannot be found online.

Limitations
The research failed to contact some large relevant chemical companies, thus some key data was missing,
Since the research is conducted in 7 overseas countries in Southeast Asia, the resources to have access to local market are quite
limited.

Country Overview Australia

4 Australian Companies Have Been Identified Which Use Or Are Able To Supply SAS
Overview:

Of our 21 respondents, 17 companies indicated they do not

carry SAS 60 (*note: 3 companies confirmed that they use
or are able to supply SAS 60 while 1 company can supply
SAS 96).
The majority of companies able to supply SAS in Australia
are in the General Chemical industry with no specific
focus in Textile, Dyeing & Finishing, nor Textile Auxiliaries.

Furthermore, the majority of companies able to supply SAS

are distributors who sell chemicals for other companies to
use, rather than end-customers who would use SAS in the
manufacturing of their products.
Industry Concentration:

Most companies researched were located in Victoria with

7 distributors and 12 end-customers identified. In New
South Wales, 11 end-customers or distributors were found
with 8 end-customers or distributors also found in Western
Australia. Finally, Queensland had 3 distributors and 4 endcustomers, and 1 Australian company had no location
listed.

The 2 largest areas of textile production are in Victoria and

New South Wales, with minor contributions from Queensland
and Western Australia which correlates with the
manufacturing employment in Australia.
The Textile industry and its employment has been declining
since 2001 largely due to lower costs offshore, or shifts in
manufacturing to more technically advanced materials.
The Textile, Clothing and Other Manufacturing sector
constitutes roughly 5.6% of the total manufacturing industry in
Australia grossing roughly $5.6 billion of Australias $1.6 trillion
GDP.

In total, 7 distributers in Cambodia have been researched.

Of these companies, 75.0% concentrate on cleaning
chemicals while the rest deal with various chemicals and all
of them located in Phnom Penh, the capital city of
Cambodia. 3 companies have provided with useful
information, 1 of which has confirmed selling SAS 60 in
their product catalog.
37 distributers in Myanmar have been studied. Up to 28
companies are trading companies distribute general
chemicals while only few companies concentrate on fine
chemicals. As a whole, chemical manufacturers and trading
companies are located in Burmese capital, Yangon. 17
companies have provided useful information. 1 company
has confirmed they sell SAS with quotation from 10,000 60,000 kyats/liter based on its quality (0.9USD/kg5.5USD/kg).
Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates (LAS) and Sodium Lauryl
Ether Sulphate (SLES) are used as substitutions of SAS both
in Cambodia and Myanmar.
Myanmar phone signal is poor resulting in difficulty during
telephone interviews. Further, in Cambodia, as English has
not been widely used, telephone contacts did not yield
great results, but email did result in some replies.

In Cambodia, the proportion of Foreign Direct Investment

(FDI) going into Textile and Garment sector has increased
from 12.6% to 28.2% between 2010 and 2013.

Typically in Cambodia, the cost of the dyeing & finishing

process is a relatively small proportion of the total cost of
a garment. For example, when making denim jeans, dyeing
& finishing accounts for only 7.0% of total cost.
Because textile manufacturing profit margins are quite low
in Myanmar and Cambodia, many companies lower costs
and switch to less expensive substitutes for SAS 60 such as
LAS and SLES.

1 Indonesian Trading Company Sells SAS 60 And Imports From Japan

Overview:

In total, 82 companies have been researched and only 1 of

them has been confirmed to have SAS in their product
catalog which they import from Japan.

Indonesia

In the past, Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (ABS) was widely used

in Indonesia before being banned. Although SAS exists in
Indonesia, Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates (LAS), a chemical
similar to SAS 60, dominates the market, while SAS remains
uncommon. Most companies interviewed were not aware
of SAS 60 at all. However, a small proportion of companies
interviewed showed interest in SAS 60.
Telephone interview is much more efficient than email. In
Indonesia, email yielded few results. Further, English is not
widely used in Indonesia.

1 Company Interviewed Sells SAS and 3 Companies Can Import SAS If Needed
Overview:

Vietnam

In total, 49 companies have been researched in Vietnam

and all (21 distributors and 28 end-customers) have been
successfully contacted, in industries ranging from general
chemicals, textile chemicals, textile manufacturers to
trading companies. 18 of them have provided us with
useful information. Only 1 distributor has confirmed they
sell SAS 60 but the product is not often required. Another 3
distributors do not have SAS as their product but could
import it if needed.
One trading company named Nam Bao Hung JSC tried to
sell SAS but finally gave up due to the high price and the
lack of market demand.

Telephone contact is easier to go through than email when

using Vietnamese. When using English to communicate, email or online contact is often required for further discuss
