STEPHEN HERO

[NOTE THAT THIS E-EDITION DOES NOT INCLUDE CHAPTER 23]

The edition I have used for this transcription is that of

Theodore Spencer, revised by John J. Slocum and Herbert Cahoon. First
published by Jonathan Cape in 1944, my copy is the Granada paperback
of 1977.

I have followed Professor Spencer's editorial markings:

revisions are shown by the original version being placed in [square
brackets]. Crayon excisions (toggled by a small superior 'c' in the
printed version) are marked by /acute and obverse\ oblique strokes in
mine, the advantage being that the start and finish of excised
sections are easier to distinguish. There is an orphan '/' in Chapter
22. If you have a more recent edition, with the missing '\', I would
be grateful to be informed.

I have called the opening few pages SHERO.15, and the last
section (the additional pages of manuscript) SHERO.ADD. Otherwise the
'numbers' of the files correspond with the chapter numbers in the
text. I have not reproduced the 'sic's or footnotes. Very, very
occasionally I have corrected what I considered trivial typographical
errors, which are unusually scarce in the printed version.

I have used my standard system for converting accents to

ASCII, with which you will be all too familiar. In Chapter 24, a
familiar chemical formula appears, marked with {curly brackets}, as is
an exponent in Chapter 26. The substitutions are:

&1 - E ACUTE. &3 - A GRAVE. &6 - O CIRCUMFLEX. &7 - E CIRCUMFLEX

&A - A ACUTE. &B - U ACUTE. &E - U GRAVE. &F - O ACUTE.
&H - N ACUTE. &I - I UMLAUT.

15. 2724 words. 5 sets of italics (toggled by *).

&1 - 1. &A - 1. &B - 1. &F - 2. &H - 1.
16. 5021 words. 6 sets of italics. &1 - 2.
17. 6291 words. 5 sets of italics. &3 - 1.
18. 1945 words. 2 sets of italics. &1 - 1.
19. 7263 words. 17 sets of italics. &6 - 1. &A - 2. &E - 2.
20. 7312 words. 31 sets of italics.
21. 6936 words. 14 sets of italics.
22. 6856 words. 4 sets of italics. &7 - 1. (Missing \)
23. 5504 words. 13 sets of italics. &I - 1.
24. 5769 words. 13 sets of italics. {H20}.
25. 6504 words. 10 sets of italics. &3 - 1.
26. 4524 words. 7 sets of italics. {12n}.
ADD 4375 words. 4 sets of italics.

*Stephen Hero* completes my transcription of Joyce's major

works. Now I can get back to reading them.
