MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION TO MAKE INFORMATION ABOUT

SAME SEX MARRIAGES AND DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS AVAILABLE ONLINE

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The first of two bills before me today is Introductory Number 260-A, sponsored by
Speaker Quinn and Council Members Brewer, Comrie, Dromm, Fidler, James, Koslowitz, Lander,
Lappin, Palma, Van Bramer, Mark-Viverito, Jackson, Garodnick, Mendez, Nelson, Koppell,
Reyna, Eugene, and Gennaro. This legislation will require the Office of the City Clerk to post on
its website and make available at its marriage bureaus certain information relating to same-sex
marriages and domestic partnerships.

“Married couples — including same-sex couples married in other states — are entitled to
more rights and benefits in New York State than those registered as domestic partners here in New
York City. Introductory Number 260-A will require the City Clerk to maintain a list of domestic
and international jurisdictions that perform same-sex marriages, and it will also post a statement
explaining that married couples — including same-sex couples married in other states — are
entitled to more rights and benefits in New York State than those registered as domestic partners
here in New York City. It also encourages visitors to reach out to those jurisdictions to learn more
about applicable marriage requirements and restrictions in those jurisdictions.

“New York State has not yet provided for marriage equality, and such action is overdue.
Until the day arrives when our City Clerk can treat same-sex couples wishing to marry in the same
way as all other couples are treated, same-sex couples in New York should be given access to
information about other jurisdictions that allow marriage equality.

“I would like to thank Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo and his staff for their work on
this bill along with my Office of City Legislative Affairs. I would also like to thank the Council
for approving this legislation.”
