MCL
 MCL stands for Maximum Contaminant Level in water…
 These are standards set by United States Environmental
Agency(EPA) for drinking water quality.
 It is the legal threshold limit on the amount of substance that is
allowed in public water systems under the safe drinking water
act.
 The limit is usually expressed as a concentration in miligrams
or micrograms per litre..
SAFE DRINKING WATER
ACT
 The Safe Drinking Water Act(SDWA) was enacted to protect
the quality of drinking water in United States…
 SDWA requires the US EPA to establish primary drinking
water regulations for contaminants in public water systems
that may have adverse effects on people’s health..
 MCL’S are established to be as close to a level that is without
known or anticipated adverse health health effects as is
technically or economically feasible.
LIST OF CONTAMINANTS :
The contaminants for whom the MCL’S are determined are the
chemicals that are present in water and which causes pollution.
Some of these are viruses,bromate,chlorite,chlorine,chlorine-
dioxide,antimony,arsenic,barium,berryllium,cadmium,chromium
copper,cyanide,fluoride,lead,mercury etc….
Long term exposure of this chemicals above the level of MCL
causes certain health effects…
EFFECTS OF CONTAMINANTS
The health hazards caused due to the presence of chemicals in
water can be seen here:
Contaminant potential health effects
viruses gastrointestinal diseases
(diarrhea,vomiting,cramps)
bromate increased risk of cancer
chlorite anaemia,infants and
young children nervous
system effects.
chlorine eye/nose irritation
stomach discomfort.
antimony increase in blood cholesterol
decrease in blood pressure
barium increase in blood pressure
POLLUTION IN DELHI

Delhi despite being the capital of India suffers from the problem
of pollution to a large extent. We see pollution in different parts
of the city. Here we will consider only water pollution.
The Yamuna river which is one of the largest river is covered
by thick layers of garbages and sediments in most of the areas.
Similarly,we have also seen water pollution recently in the
Arabian Sea in mumbai..This happened when oil tanks in the
Bombay Offshore area in mumbai spilled into the sea as a result
of its collision with big ships moving around in the Arabian Sea.
