1. (a) Explain the working principle of crucible furnace. Discuss pit crucible furnace.
(b) Give reasons for the occurance of the following casting defects:
i. Pin hole porosity
ii. Run out
iii. Drop

2. (a) Discuss the main advantages and disadvantages of die-casting.
(b) Define ‘Modulus’ and calculate the riser size for the following data using Modulus Method.
Casting Size = 25 × 25 × 5 cm
Take modulus, Me =D/6 [8+8]
3. (a) What is Arc blow? What are the measures to be taken to avoid Arc blow?
(b) List the arc welding equipment? Explain each of its use. [10+6]
4. Explain the following types of welding techniques:
(a) Friction welding
(b) Thermit welding
(c) Laser Beam welding. [5+5+6]
5. (a) Explain the term Brazing and different methods used in Brazing.
(b) Explain the following terms used in computation of weld costs
i. Operator factor
ii. Overhead costs
iii. Equipment costs. [10+6]
6. (a) With sketches indicate how the punch force in blanking and punching operations can be reduced.
Also explain it.
(b) Mention the effects of back pull on die pressure and drawing stress in rod drawing process and
explain them. [8+8]
7. (a) How direct extrusion differs from indirect extrusion? Discuss their relative merits and demerits.
(b) Write the expression for determining the force required to produce an extrusion and explain the
various parameters used in it. [8+8]
8. (a) Explain the functions of the following forging equipment
i. Sledge hammers
ii. Tongs
iii. Blowers
(b) Elucidate the applications of Rotary forging. [9+7]
