People hopes for peace in Comval Province

Residents of Barangay Bucana, Maco, Compostela Valley Province gathered

together on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 to attend the peace dialogue held at the
Barangay Hall to express their desire to have peace in their area. The event was
facilitated by the peace and development team (PDT) of the 71st Infantry (Kaibigan)
Battalion.

For a while, they stopped working to attend the dialogue. They listened to the
lectures of Technical Sergeant Ronald Alejandro of Alfa Company, who talked about the
insurgency problem. “Insurgency will not be resolved by military alone, but with the
cooperation of all the civil societies.” The lecturer said. “Peace is everybody’s concern,
let us give chance for peace to reign with your cooperation by not giving in to the three
basic demands of the CPP/NPA/NDF which include financial, material and moral
demands,” he added.

In response, they also revealed their personal dealings with the rebels who
frequent their barangay to extort from the people and agitate them against the
government. Honorable Enrique Ricafort, of same barangay said, “We are very happy
and thankful to the soldiers who came to our place and showed their support and
willingness to work with the people.” He also declared that his people now want the PDT
to remain in his barangay.

Lieutenant Colonel Camilo Ligayo, Commander of the 71 st Infantry Battalion

commended his peace and development teams for the good feedbacks he was
receiving from the community about their (PDTs) activities. “We will continue to intensify
our community relations activities so that our people will know more about their soldiers
who spend most of their time away from their own families. This is a big sacrifice that
we have to do in order in the name of peace and development,” he said.
