Development of women entrepreneurs


The literary and educational status of women improved considerably during the past
few decades. More and more higher educational and research institutions are imparting
knowledge and specialisation. At this juncture, effective steps are needed to provide
entrepreneurial awareness, orientation and skill development programmes to women.
The institutions available at present are very limited. Moreover, their functions and
opportunities available with them are not popularised much. Motivation is the key for
successful Women Entrepreneurs. They are in all industries today. In the US, women
own 25% of all business. In Canada they own 1/3 of all business. In France they own
1/5 of all business. The area of business are Retail, restaurants, hotels, education,
cultural, cleaning, insurance and manufacturing.
Following are the reasons why women could start their own business: -
1. To face new challenges and opportunities for self fulfillment.
2. To prove themselves in innovative jobs.
3. To change the control and maintain balance between family responsibility and
business lives- micro business fits their life style to control everything.
Examples: -
• Women entrepreneurs account for only 4.5 % of the population of India
• Leading business women in India: Amrita Patel – Chairperson of ADDB; Chanda
Kocchar- Executive director, ICICI Bank; Ekta Kapoor- Creative Director, Balaji
telefilms.

Profile of a women entrepreneur


Women entrepreneur enjoy the support of their father or mother who might already be
working in their independent business. Women entrepreneurs usually venture into a
new business in their early 30s after completing their education and after marriage.
They usually have prior experience in their new venture as a result of education and
exposure to realities of business. Women entrepreneurs usually desire freedom and
independence. They don’t want to work under any superior. They are self confident and
hence have a high tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity. They are usually moderate
risk takers and have high energy level. In the start up of business they may face
problems such as liquidity or availability of funds. It generally takes some time to break-
even in a new business. Chances of success are usually high in smaller businesses.

Leadership qualities of women entrepreneurs


Women entrepreneurs have the ability to accept challenges. They have characteristics
such as ambitious, adventurous, hard working, optimism, patience, skilful and
industrious. They have a drive to achieve success while facing challenges. They have
the enthusiasm to learn new ideas. They are conscious and are aware about the ground
realities. They are educated and hence intelligent.

Psycho social barriers for women entrepreneurs:


The most daunting challenge that women entrepreneurs face is the prevalence of male
dominated society due to which they face various social issues. Generally women are
expected to fulfil family obligations as per the cultural values and social beliefs existing
in the society due to which they face the role conflict between family and business.
Women in many countries including India face gender discrimination. They are not
given encouragement which is why they lack motivation, courage and self confidence.
Due to the unjust social, economic and cultural system, they develop negative attitude
due to which they become fearful of failures and criticism. Women, due to their
exposure to such regimented environment, fail to develop or utilize leadership qualities
such as planning, organizing, directing, controlling and motivating which are essential
traits for becoming an entrepreneur.
