Inspiteoftheglobalfinancialcrisis,India’seconomyexpandedby6.1percentin
theApril-Junequarterofthecurrentfiscal.1 Theincreaseineconomicoutputwas
drivenbytrade,hotelandtransportationservices,aswellasminingand
manufacturing.

Whilethisgrowthhasbeenhigherthanthe5.8percentinthepreviousquarter,
therehasbeenadeclinewhencomparedtothe7.8percenteconomicexpansion
recordedduringthecorrespondingperiodofthelastfiscal.1

PoormonsoonsarealsolikelytoposemacroeconomicriskstoGDPgrowthand
inflation.Abelownormalrainfallhasalsocausedconcernsforagricultural
productionasonly40percentofIndia’sfarmlandisirrigated.2

Whileitisprematuretoevaluatehowmuchgrowthwillbeaffected,thedegree
ofdamageislikelytodependonIndianfarmers’abilitytoshifttoshorter-duration
cropsandpost-monsoonshowersthatwilldeterminesoilmoisture.

Nonetheless,India’seconomyhasstillmanagedtoemergeinabettershapethan
mostofitsregionalpeers.

Alongside,India’sFiveYearForeignTradePolicy(2009-14)wasannouncedon
August27,2009.Theshorttermobjectiveofthepolicyistoseizeandreverse
decliningtrendofexportsbyprovidingadditionalsupporttothosesectorswhich
havebeenhitbadlybyrecessioninthedevelopedworld.

Thepolicyhassetanannualexportgrowthtargetof15percent(USD200billion)
byMarch2011.IntheremainingthreeyearsofthisForeignTradePolicyi.e.upto

intoanagreementwithBelgium-basedWABCOforthedevelopmentof

manualtransmissionsystemsfrom2010through2015.WABCOisexpectedto
supplytoAshokLeylanditsnewOptidrivemodularAMTsystemwhich,as

ParkHotels,thehotelsubsidiaryofApeejaySurrendraGroup,isexpectedto
open4morehotelsinHyderabad,PuneandJaipurbesidesopeningitssecond
