Organizational Behaviour: Levels of

Analysis
by Jeannine Guerci on June 4, 2009

Organizational behaviour refers to a systematic analysis of both individual and group

behaviour in an organizational setting. Behaviour assessments are an integral part of
organizational behaviour.

Organizational Behaviour as an Interdisciplinary Field

On a broader note, organizational behaviour can be categorized as an interdisciplinary field

that is based on a three level behavioural analysis as given below:

 Individual level: It deals with individual level analysis of characteristics like creativity,
motivation, performance, ethics, deviant and cooperative behaviour and productivity.

 Group level: Analysis at a group level comprises detailed appraisal of inter group
disagreements, interpersonal communication, composition of hierarchy and other
group centric parameters.

 Organizational level: This level comprises a detailed analysis of an organization’s

culture, values, inter-organizational conflicts and environmental variables. Basically,
all factors that impact an organization’s growth are covered.

At different levels, organizational behaviour can be analyzed as it will toss up significant

cues about areas that require further improvement. Consequently, it drives better focus in
shaping an organization’s strategy, particularly relating to hiring, training and retaining
employees. In fact, a study published in the Academy of Management Journal in 1995 stated
that companies which implement components of organizational behaviour like “valuing the
employees, engaging in selective hiring and removing status quo” tend to be highly
successful.
