Activity : Measuring the diameter of objects using calipers and a ruler

Aim : To measure diameter of a beaker

Apparatus and materials : 250 ml beaker, external and internal caliper and ruler C3 (d)
Procedure : 1 External diameter of a beaker was measured by using an external caliper.
(Figure 1 was shown as an example) Record your answer in Table 1 provided.
State your reading in centimeters.

2 Internal diameter of a beaker was measured by using an internal caliper.

C6 (e) (Figure 2 was shown as an example) Record your answer in table 1 provided.
State your reading in centimeters.

3 Repeat your measurements to obtain two more readings. Make sure your eyes
are directly above the objects when taking the readings. Then calculate the
average for each set of readings.

3 Which calipers would you use to measure the external diameter of a beaker?
External calipers

4 Which calipers would you use to measure the internal diameter of a beaker?
Internal calipers

5 How do you determine the thickness of a beaker?

Find the difference between external and internal diameter of a beaker

6 What tool would you use to measure the external and internal diameter of a test tube?
We use external and internal calipers

7 How do you find the thickness of a piece of paper? C6 (b),(c)

(i) Find the thickness of the pile of papers. (d),(e)
(ii) Divide the thickness of the pile of papers with the number of that papers.

8 How can we find the thickness of the wall of a measuring cylinder?
