My mother was a Cree Indian whose family moved across Canada to Ontario around the tum of the century, My father worked on the railroad which passed through Ontario, which is how he met my mother. When Iwas growing up, I always felt that there was something wrong with me. If we were playing cowboys and Indians, I never wanted to be Sitting Bull or Crazy Horse; I'd rather be Roy Rogers, Hollywood movies had something to do with that - no one cheered for the Indians. ‘Indian’ was a name used in error by Christopher Columbus because he believed he had sailed, not to North America, but around the world to India, There are about 300,000 Indians registered in Canada today. Tracts of land called reserves have been set aside for them to live on if they choose. But the Indian is caught up in a no-man’s land when he tries to adjust to the white man's society. He finds he belongs in neither that world nor his own. He comes from a culture where people cooperate rather than compete and he is just too vulnerable. 1 guess I made it in the white man’s world because I went away to college and never let anyone know I was an Indian. It took mea long time to feel how I do now about the Indian part of me. * His children have never had to suffer the same sort of treatment as he did. ‘No, we don’t have any hang ups; they {old me. To me he did not appear to be like a man, more like a collection of woodland things. His face was red and crushed- looking. There were leaves in the mud in his hain, and leaves and little bits of stick on his rotting clothes, and all over him. “You oughtn't to live like that,’ said Mother. ‘You ought to get back to your home. ‘No,’ smiled the man. ‘That wouldn't be sensible. They'd very quickly take me. He wasn’t a tramp. He had four bright medals in his pocket, and he used to polish them and put them on the table like money. But the girls were sure that he was a soldier, and said it in whispers, like a secret. And when he came down to our house and sat with bent shoulders by the fire, covered with leaves and dirt, I thought of hhim sleeping up there in the wood. I wanted to ask, ‘How's the war in that wood” But he never told us. He sat there drinking his tea. When he saw us looking at him, he smiled from his beard. And when my brother Jack aimed a spoon at him and shot him, saying ‘T'm a soldier’, he replied softly, ‘Aye, and you'd be a better soldier than me, any day’ When he said that, I wondered what had happened to the war. Were his clothes all torn because he was such a bad soldier? Had he lost the war in the wood? When’ he didn't come any more, I knew he had lost it.
