DARE

premier institute engaged in design and development of Avionics

and Electronics Warfare systems which are the vital equipments in
modern warfare
DARE has developed many Aviation Electronics (Avionics) and
Electronics Warfare (EW) systems which are being used in almost
all fighters and other aircraft in the Indian Air Force (IAF). DARE
has established a state of art facilities for the development and
testing of such systems.

Mission Avionics

• Indigenously developed Mission Computers (MC)

for Su-30 MKI, Jaguar and MiG 27 upgrade and
the prestigious Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).
• Advanced COTS components and technologies
have been used in these MCs to provide these
aircraft with state-of-the-art computers.

• MC with a performance of over 50 MIPS, hosts ARINC

429 & 1553 B channels.
• Radar Computer (RC) Controls the phased array radar
of the Su30-MKI and also functions as the Radar Data
Processor.

• Display Processor (DP) Generates anti-aliased

computer images to drive four colour Multi Function
Displays (MFD), Head Up Display (HUD), Colour and
Monochrome Symbol Generators.

• A Core Avionics Computer developed using MC, RC,

DP modules and used for the MIG 27 Upgrade.

• Because of its modularity it has been adapted for an

identical computer (JMC) for the NAVWASS Jaguar
Upgrade.

• Avionics software is developed in a cost-effective PC

based networked software development environment
with the software development tools and Real Time
software platform.
Defensive Avionics

Survivability of military aircraft in the modern combat scenario of sophisticated radar

guided air defence weapon systems particularly that of strike aircraft can be enhanced only
by equipping them with electronic armor consisting of advanced Electronic Warfare Systems.

• The systems may consist of a

combination of Electronic Support
(ES), Electronic Attack (EA) and
Electronic Protection (EP) systems.
• Development of Versatile Radar
Warning Receivers (RWR), Podded
jammers and integrated EW suites
for military aircrafts.

• The Radar Warning Receiver – Tarang, intercept and

identify airborne and ground based acquisition, target
tracking and missile guidance radars in multi octave
frequency bands.

• The system provides audio and visual warnings in

order to alert the pilot to imminent threats.

• The RWR system integrates High Accuracy Direction

Finder, Digital RF Memory, Video Processor,
Advanced Wide Band Receiver, Microwave Antenna
Select Switch, Front End Amplifier etc.
• The integrated EW suite - Tempest,
performs the basic functions of threat
identification and effective countermeasure
action
• Provides man-machine interface in the form
of an integrated display/control unit based
on Active Colour Matrix LCD Display
• Systems are flight line programmable giving
the operational crew enough flexibility to
optimize the system configuration.
• Compatibility with on board Multi Mode
Radars (MMR), Self Protection Jammer (SPJ)
and other avionics through innovative
techniques in spectral, temporal and spatial
management.
• The system's operational software is based on
object-oriented technology and ensures
smooth upgrades and reliable performance.

Ground Support Equipment (GSE)

• ergonomically designed mission planning stations and mission data loaders
• Systems carries out Built-In-Test (BIT) during power-on, periodically during normal
operation without interfering with the system operation and on initiation by the
operator.
• Test results, threat activity, system responses and pilot operations are logged into the
system with time stamp.

Dare is developing important EW systems such as

• EWSFA (EW Suite for Fighter Aircraft) for LCA and Mig-27
• MAWS (Missile Approach Warning System) for Helicopters and Aircraft
• Self Protection Suite for AEWS (Air-borne Early Warning System) that includes Dual
Color MAWS, RWR/ESM, Laser Warning System and CMDS
Test & Evaluation Facility for Airborne EW System

Range On Wheels (ROW): This facility has been developed for evaluation of installed
specifications of airborne EW Systems and for fine tuning electronic attack techniques. This
Mobile Range consists of representative threat radar (PRATHIDVANTHI), a reference radar
(DRUVA), a Slaved System (DASA), a Data Acquisition Station (SANGAM), a Mission
Control Station (SANCHALlKA) and a Generator Vehicle (SHAKTHI).
Range can be used for Avionics, Weapon and EW system test and evaluation. Range is
also useful for studying aerodynamic data in real time for aircrafts, helicopters and un-
manned vehicles. Range is used by DRDO, Defense Services, HAL and BEL. The range can be
offered for civil industry to test their products on requirement basis.

SANGAM, built on a 40 feet trailer, has four independent cabins and a service bay which
houses support facilities. The vehicle is fully air-conditioned and has UPS. SANGAM
provides laboratory environment and houses data acquisition systems, data analysis facilities,
real time telemetry, communication, video recording and displays, central timing and a
differential GPS base system.

SANCHALIKA is a mission control vehicle, where all the activities of flight trails can be
monitored and directed. It has a unique configurable display system, using which effective
presentations can be made. This vehicle is fully air-conditioned and has UPS and
communications systems.

DASA is a slaved pedestal system comprising a servo pedestal, a transmitter antenna,

transmitter system, a receive antenna and a receiver system. The servo pedestal is salved to
one of the tracking radars. This station will facilitate radiation of programmed threat signals
towards the EW aircraft under evaluation and also in the measurement of RF power from the
on-board electronic attack systems. SAKTHI vehicle houses a 100 I0JA, 3 phase generator.
Power is routed to the vehicle through a distribution system.
RF Advance Test Equipment (RF-ATE):

• Capable of providing complete test solutions

for all passive and active RF & Microwave
components, sub-systems and systems in the
frequency range of 500 MHz to 40 GHz either
CW or Pulsed mode.
• Control hardware and software platform
based on Lab-View and Vee-pro Software.
• Consists of high performance RF &
Microwave equipments, programmable
power supplies and over 300 programmable
digital I/O controls.
• Facility for RF Signal Distribution through 24
channel switch matrix to multi ports Device
Under Test.
• All Instruments & Switch Matrix are
connected through a GPIB & USB interface to PC workstation.
• Used to characterize RF modules for frequency response, Spectral response, Gain and
noise figure, S- Parameter characteristics and Pulse characteristics.

Pods housing avionics equipments

• The SIVA pod, indigenously designed and developed, is a non-jettisonable external

store
• Designed to fly at supersonic speeds.
• Capable of measuring Fine Direction Finding (FDF) of ground based emitters.
• Utilizes phase interferometer technique for FDF.
• The SIVA Pod is 406 mm in diameter, 2244
mm in length and weighs 100 kg with all the
electronics.
• Radio transparent GFRP sandwich radome in
the front provides protection to the Antenna
