INTRODUCTION
HALFEN ANCHORING SYSTEMS
Halfen products have been used worldwide for over
sixty-five years, unmatched in providing secure
adjustable connections to concrete and steel struc-
tures.
L
T
V Halfen anchor channels are cast into concrete, and
Halfen anchor channel can support working loads up to 10,800 lbs (48 kN)
cast into concrete per fastener. They are available in hot dip galvanized
carbon steel or stainless steel in lengths from 1-3/4”
(45mm) to 20’-0” (6.1m).

Halfen channel profiles can be secured to or hung

from the structure by welding, bolting, clamping or

Why use Halfen products for connections
INTRODUCTION

to concrete?

1. Easier to design
• Abundant selection of products.
• Clearly presented load data.
• High load capacities with close edge distances.
• Provide adjustability and accommodate construction tolerances.
• Technical and detailing assistance readily available.

2. Perform more consistently

• Off-the-shelf, pre-engineered systems.
• Extensively tested.
• Less susceptible to unskilled installation (poor welds or improperly
installed drilled bolts mean significant reductions in anticipated
load capacities).

3. Safer to use
• No welding required for installation (welding sparks and fumes
can be safety hazard).
• No touch-up painting required.
• No power tools needed for installation (high noise levels, dust,
vibration, electrical equipment, high speed cutting and grinding
machines can all be safety hazards on the jobsite).
• No projection hazards (cast-in bolts projecting above the concrete
surface are a tripping hazard and may injure personnel falling on
them).

4. Easier to install
• Halfen anchor channels are simply nailed to formwork prior to
pouring the concrete. After the formwork is stripped, remove
the foam filler from the channel and install the Halfen fasteners.
• Drilling for expansion bolts is time-consuming with potential
hazards of hitting reinforcement, damaging expensive drill bits or
cracking concrete.
• Cast-in bolts and ferrules are difficult to position accurately,
and provide limited adjustability.

5. Easier to use
• Halfen anchor channels provide instant adjustment.
• Repositioning a welded connection is difficult and expensive.
• Moving the position of a drilled bolt requires redrilling, with
possible reduction in load capacity.
• Cast-in bolts and ferrules lack adjustability and have threads that
are easily damaged or contaminated with concrete or dust.

6. Cost competitive

HALFEN ANCHOR
CHANNELS

Halfen anchor channels are manufactured from channel

profiles with I-anchors shop-welded to the back of the
channels.

They are available in ready-to-use short lengths and

ANCHOR CHANNELS
continuous lengths up to 20'-0" (6.1m). Custom lengths can
also be manufactured to suit customer requirements.

Halfen anchor channels are available in hot dip galvanized

carbon steel and are foam filled. Stainless steel anchor
channels are also available.

REINFORCEMENT
Halfen anchor channels have been tested in unreinforced
concrete, and no additional reinforcing is normally needed to
carry the published loads. However the loads resisted by the
anchor channels have to be transferred into the surrounding
concrete, and the engineer must ensure proper design of the
complete system.

SAFETY FACTOR
The loads shown in the catalog are working loads and include a
safety factor of at least 3, applied to the ultimate strength of the
anchor channel or surrounding concrete.

CONCRETE STRENGTH
The load capacities of anchor channels shown in this manual are
based on their performance in 3,000 psi (20.7 MPa) normal
weight concrete. Some loads (marked *) are controlled by steel
strength. All other loads are controlled by concrete strength and
can be increased for higher strength normal weight concrete, up
to a maximum of 5,000 psi (34.5 MPa) by applying a factor of

For light weight concrete strengths up to a maximum of 6,000 psi

(41.4 MPa), apply a factor of

MANUFACTURING TOLERANCES
The dimensions shown are nominal. Tolerances of ±1/8"
(3mm) apply to lengths up to 12" (305mm), and ±1/4" (6mm) on
longer lengths.

3. Securing Halfen Anchor Channels to Metal Pour Stops

a) Pre-punch a slot in the metal pour stop. The slot

should be 1/2” (12 mm) shorter than the length of the
anchor channel, and the same width as the slot in the
face of the Halfen anchor channel, as shown in
Figure 11.

b) Position the anchor channel over the slot in the pour

stop. Tack weld 2 or 3 places along top edge and once
at each end as shown in Figure 12.
Fig. 11.
c) Hold back metal deck at least 1” (25 mm) beyond the
embedment depth of the anchor channel to ensure full
capacity of the anchor channel, as shown in Figure 13.

d) Remove foam from channel (Figure 8).

HALFEN TEE-BOLTS
Halfen tee-bolts are quickly installed
in any location in the Halfen
channel. Simply insert head into

Halfen channel profiles.

Tee-bolts with hammer heads are

The loads and stresses shown here are based on these formulae:

Bolt stress area As = 0.25 Π (D-0.9382P)2

Allowable shear stress is lesser of
FASTENERS

Fv = 0.45 Fy
Fv = 0.22 Fu
Allowable tension stress is least of
Ft = 0.6 Fy
Ft = 0.43 Fu-1.8fv
Ft = 0.33 Fu
Allowable bending stress
Fb = 0.75 Fy
Combined stress ratio

Equation 8 is more easily used with actual and

allowable loads, thus

where T = actual tension load on bolt

TB = allowable bolt tension load
V = actual shear load on bolt
VB = allowable bolt shear load

If both bending and tension are present, allowable bolt tension

load must be reduced to

where T(B+M) = reduced tension capacity

M = actual bolt bending moment
MB = allowable bolt bending moment
Also combined load equation then becomes
