4. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS & PRECAUTIONS

4-1. Location

The recommended installation position is under the dash or near the console box area. Do not place the radio in the vicinity of the air conditioner ducts. Follow the instructions below for the radio and microphone installation.

Be sure there is enough clearance for the heat to dissipate from the heatsink. Installation where natural air flow is available is recommended. Avoid installations where high temperature, high humidity and/or dust is prevalent.

4-2. Power Cable Wiring

The Avenger GX operates from a DC 12V battery. ALWAYS check the battery voltage, particularly if the Avenger GX is to be fitted to a large truck, as many trucks use a 24V electrical system. ALWAYS use a DC-DC converter when operating from a 24V battery. Connect the DC power cord directly to the battery.

NOTE 1- Don't connect the DC cord in a manner which links it with vehicle ignition switch system, otherwise the CPU memory will be erased each time the engine is switched OFF and left OFF for more than a few minutes.

NOTE 2- The Avenger GX is always shipped with its EEPROM installed.

However, if it is removed for any reason, ALWAYS be sure that the EEPROM is installed in the radio before connecting the DC cord to the battery. If the DC cord is connected directly to the battery, the CPU will be alive even if the radio is switched off. Installation of the EEPROM while the DC cord is connected may cause a malfunction.

4-3. Microphone Connection

Put the microphone plug into the microphone socket mounted on the radio front panel and fasten the screws tightly to secure the microphone. Loose connections may cause faulty operation.

4-4. Installing the main unit (See Fig. 1 )

Be sure that there is enough clearance for the microphone and power cable around the radio. Using the bracket as a template, mark and drill the mounting holes in a suitable IDeation.

After installing the bracket at a designated place; align the grooves on both sides of the main unit to both edges of bracket and slide it into the bracket until it is firmly locked in position.

To remove the main unit from the bracket, pull up the two Release Levers at the both edges of bracket. The bracket is then unlocked and the main radio may be removed.

Only the 5 Tone encode numbers and the Memory encode numbers (up to a maximum of 16) that were preset during programming of the radio prior to delivery can be encoded.

1. Depressing the Tone key displays the programed encode number on the LCD. If the correct encode number is displayed, then the number can be transmitted by simply pressing "Call" key.

During the transmission, the _ sign is displayed on the LCD.

2. If the encode number shown on LCD includes" -" (a bar), a number can be entered with the keypad to replace the" -",

After entering the Tone Numbers, the number can be transmitted by simply pressing the _ key.

3.lt is possible to display a 7 or 8 digit Tone number. Pressing the .... key shows the complete number for about one second by using the area of the LCD that normally displays the channel numbers. When a 7 or 8 digit Tone number is transmitted by pressing the _, only the last 6 digits are shown on the LCD display.

4. ltis possible to transmit the radio's AN I encode number every time the PTT switch is pressed (provided this function was programmed by your radio dealer prior to delivery). The radio can be programmed to transmit the ANI number as soon as the PIT is pressed, or, when the PIT switch is released.

5. The R Tone + 5 Tone mode is carried out with preprogrammed R Tone encode numbers. * Pressing the ~ ~ _ keys will encode the R Tone + 5 Tone.

* Pressing the _ ~ .. keys will encode the R Tone only.

* Pressing the __ key only encodes the 5 Tone number.

6. 5 Tone Memory Calling

It is not possible to use the Memory Calling function unless it has been pre-programmed into the memory locations-prior to delivery.

Select the desired memory number and Tone number by pressing the" key and rotating the Power/Setting switch.

Then, press the" key to transmit the number.

If the selected Memory number is not transmitted within three seconds after being loaded from memory bank, the Memory 5 Tone number will be discarded and the previous 5 Tone number will be restored to the display.

6-12 Operation of 5 Tone Decoding

When the 5 Tone Selcalf decode function is progammed prior to delivery, the Selcall function mutes the radio so that no audio sounds are heard from the speaker. While the Audio Mute is in operation (waiting to receive a valid 5- Tone number), the @f)'ilt!lXl'!:}sign will be shown on the display. Upon receipt of a valid Selcall number, the Audio Mute will be cleared and audio sounds will be heard from the speaker. The Audio Mute is turned off when receiving or after transmitting a 5 tone number, The Audio Mute function can also be turned "On/Off" by pressing the G:#lIJ1?tll key, If a radio has the Auto-Reset function programmed prior to delivery the radio will automatically be set up in Tone decode mode. (The Group 5- Tone decoding parameter is set during programming prior to delivery). Upon receipt of a valid decode number, the sender's decode number shall be shown on the LCD and pressing the ~#1;J;*f® key will transmit the shown number. Also, a radio with the Automatic AnswerBack function will transmit the other party's decode number and Answer-Back number when a valid decode number is received.

This function is recommended for security purposes, particularly in cases of theft. Once a "Kill" number is received by a particular radio. the Keypad keys, the Power/Setting switch. the PIT, and the squelch functions will all be disabled.

The "Kill" function can only be operated if programmed prior to delivery and provided that the 5-Tone Selcall or DTMF decode function has also been engaged. If a radio has been "Killed" an "F" symbol is shown on the LCD display. It will be necessary to consult your radio supplier for instructions on how to reactivate the radio.

The Group Tone facility in the Avenger GX has the ability to call a minimum of 15 sites (or radios) up to a maximum of 158 sites (in 5- Tone Mode, maximum is 155 sites) as a Group. Group Decoding can only operate with radios that have the Group Call function pre-programmed during the predelivery programming of the Avenger GX radio.

For example:

When a Avenger GX radio is programmed with the "AU tone as the Group tone in the third digit location, it will treat any received tone sequence which has the "A" tone in the third digit as a Group call. However, if it receives a tone sequence with an "A" tone in any digit location EXCEPT the third digit location, the Avenger GX will treat the call as a "NON Group" call.

e. s. : 1 G 3 4 5 NON GROUP

1 2 G 4 5 GROUP

2 G G 5 GROUP

2 3 G 5 NON GROUP

NOTES:

1. The "G" indicates the Group Tone

2. In the above example tone" A" is set as the "G" group tone.

If a Group Tone digit is NOT specified during pre-rlelivery programming. all the numbers in the above example will be treated as a Group Call.
