EASTER MESSAGE 2011

Pagkabanhaw. Gikan sa kamatayon padulong sa kabuhi. Ini ang kabug-usan sang lima
ka estorya sang ebanghelyo nga mabasa naton sa Lima ka Domingo sang Kwaresma.
Ang mga inadlaw sang Semana Santa nagasunod man sa sini nga tema: gikan sa
kamatayon padulong sa kabuhi.
Ang Semana Santa nagapakita sang pagpakigbato ni Jesus batok kay Satanas sa mga

Halin pa sang bata ako nadumduman
ko ang proseyon sang Semana Santa sa
Parokya sang Tanza kag padulungan
sini ang Parokya sang Santa Teresita,
Iloilo City. Ang mga karo o karwahe
sang mga “lifesize” nga estatua, ang
makakulunyag nga talan-awon kag
nagaupod man ako sa prosesyon sa
pagsindi kandila. Bag-o ang bayo kag
bag-o ang sapatos nga igasuksok.
Tungod kay bata pa ako, nabilin gid
lang ang mga larawan sang prosesyon.
Ang liturhia wala ako sing may
nadumduman kay pulos sa Latin tanan
ang ginahambal o ginaamba sang pari
sa simbahan.

Pedro: “ang bag-o nga langit kag bag-o
nga duta?”Ayhan sa kalabanan sa aton,
wala pa ayhan si Kristo nakagwa sa iya
lulubngan? Laban ayhan sa aton ang
pagtan-aw sa aton pagtoo, pag-antus
lang, indi ang pagbag-o o pagtubo?
Wala ayhan kita kahibalo nga tungod
sang sobra nga pagtamyaw sa crus
ginahimo naton ini nga pagapaantusun
man ang iban? Ang kubos amo ang

“He is not here; He has risen, just as He said...”
(Matthew 28:6)
EASTER MESSAGE
- Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo
Resurrection. From death to life. This may be
the summary of the five gospel stories that we
read on the Five Sundays of the Lent.
Holy Week describes Jesus’ struggle with
Satan in the three temptations in the Desert
(Mt. 4/1-11), a struggle to which all of us are
exposed. The Temptation of Jesus is a
reflection of the opposition between sin and
grace, between death and life. We are
challenged to identify ourselves with Jesus who
is Life.
Holy Week gives us a foresight into the future
of our life-struggles. The Transfiguration of
Jesus (Mt. 17/1-9) is the glory of God shining
through the body of Jesus, through his flesh,
his person. This same body would later be
exposed to flogging, crucifixion and death. This
is the death that leads to life. Evil or Satan
promises (falsely) to bring life, which
eventually ends in death.
Holy Week brings us to the “theological
conversation” between Jesus and the
Samaritan Woman at the Well. It was at that
moment when the Samaritan Woman
accepted the truth about her life – false or evil
marriage – and confessed it before Jesus
and her neighborhood that she received light
and life. We come to the well and are reminded
of the Holy Spirit given to us through the
water o baptism.
Holy Week (John 9/1-41) is another reflection
on the opposition between life and death, sin
and forgiveness, truth and deception as
reflected in the story of the cure of the man
born blind. We are put to the position of
choosing, like the blind man, whether to walk
in darkness and contribute to the sin of the
world or to stand with Christ against the power
that seeks to destroy life.
Holy Week celebrates the raising of Lazarus –
from death to life (Jo. 11/1-45). The
theological conversation between Martha and
Jesus leads to the resurrection of Lazarus.
Strange but true: even in death, Lazarus obeys.
Lazarus is freed from sin, evil, death, from
anything that holds him captive.
The Resurrection of Christ invites us to
resurrect from death to life, from sin to
forgiveness, from darkness to light.

“… on the first day of the week
Mary Magdalene came to the
tomb early, while it was still dark
and saw that the stone had been
taken away from the tomb. So, she
ran… to Simon Peter and the other
disciple… . ‘They have taken the
Lord from the tomb and we do not
know where they have laid him.’”
(Jn 20: 1-9)
We Christians all over the world and
from all walks of life on this day gather
together as one in places of worship for
one reason –the celebration of the
Resurrection. For some moments let us
reflect in the light of the gospel reading
on the meaning and value of this
celebration in our life as disciples of
Jesus.
John our evangelist tells us that early in
the morning of the first day of the week
when it was still dark, Mary Magdalene
went to the tomb of Jesus looking for his
body. Maybe, she was there during that
time to finish the aborted burial
preparation of Jesus. Jesus was hastily
buried on the afternoon of the day
before Sabbath for the reason of the
Sabbath rest. She was shocked, however,
to discover that the body of her Master
was nowhere to be found.
Maybe Mary Magdalene was crying all
night long because of the death of her
Lord. She was in the state of anguish and
distress for a thousand reasons. First,
she could no longer see and talk to Jesus
who before reached out to her in
compassion and love. Second, she could
no longer be with her Master who
restored her human dignity. Third, she
could no longer be with Him on whom
she had anchored all her hope and
aspirations. Her dream of becoming the
person whom she envisioned to be was
shattered before her eyes. Finally, her
world crumbled never to be the same
again.
Mary, before the death of Jesus,
responded to all the goodness of Jesus
bestowed on her by a complete
transformation of herself. She had
undergone a “metanoia”. She was not
the same woman she used to be. In her
state of sorrow and despondency she
was contemplating if life is still worth
living. She lost all her hope. On whom
shall she lean on when life gets tough?
Mary’s feeling of being deprived was
further aggravated when she saw the
empty tomb of her Master. Her Lord has
been “taken away”, she told her fellow
disciples Peter and the disciple Whom
Jesus loved.
Peter and John were also in the state of
bafflement due to the death of Jesus.
They too, like Mary were looking for
Jesus. Expecting Jesus to be in the tomb
instead what greeted them were some
clothes well arranged lying separately
inside the tomb in the place where the
body of Jesus was once laid. Of this John
writes, “He observed the wrappings on
the ground and saw the piece of cloth
which has covered the head not lying
with the wrappings but rolled up in a
place by itself.” Yet, in spite of the
absence of Jesus’ body they saw their
Master – the “risen Christ”.
Mary, Peter and John were not together
when they came to the tomb. This was
not a hindrance to their state of
awareness of the risen Lord’s presence.
It was their faith and not their bodily
eyes that brought about all of this,
Fr. James McPollin, S.J. in his book
“John: New Testament Message 6”
writes: “Jesus reveals himself this time
as the risen Lord and his disciples
respond in faith – they ‘believe’, that is,
they commit and attach themselves to
their risen Lord in faith. Besides, they
‘see him, they become aware of his
presence and grasp the mystery that he
is their risen Lord.”
Mary, on the other hand, though she
was looking for the dead body of Jesus,
yet God led her to the light of the great
truth. Unable to see her Master’s body
but an empty tomb, she run off in tears
to Peter and John informing them that
the Lord was taken away. Confused of
the unexpected events around her she
returned to the tomb unable to
recognize the risen Jesus. It was here
and then that the unexpected happened.
Jesus asked her: “Woman why are you
weeping? Who is it you are looking for?”
“Taking him as a gardener, she said,
“Sir, if you are the one who carried him
off, tell me were you laid him and I will
take him away.” “Mary”, answered
Jesus. With this one word, her mid was
flooded with God’s grace and she
recognized that her Master has truly
risen from the dead as the Lord of life.
This scene-this event at the tomb
described the Easter faith of his disciples
and the meaning of the presence of the
risen Christ.
As we celebrate the resurrection of
Jesus, we could be likened to Mary in a
sense that we are also moving toward
the tomb. This time, it is not Jesus’ tomb
but our own tomb. The time we started
our life in the darkness of our mother’s
womb was also the moment we have
started marching towards the darkness
of the grave within mother earth. Death
for us, as well as, for any creature is
inescapable. It is a fact of life. However,
we would not accept the reality of death.
We decorate death with so many kinds
of pretence; hoping that these pretences
would obliterate its mortal bite. The
body of a dead human is to be “looked”
alive not lifeless. Yet, death continuously
lurks waiting to pounce on us. Death
then must be faced by us. But it must be
but done in the light of the resurrection.
The tomb of Jesus means that Jesus had
really died. The tomb that was found
empty on the resurrection day means
that the Lord has truly risen as he said.
On Good Friday Jesus died and on
Easter Sunday Jesus has risen from the
dead. What had happened on these two
days have a great implication on us
Christians. By dying Jesus destroyed our
death. By rising he restored our life.
Death is not our end as others would say.
Our Lord has gone before us in death to
lead us into everlasting life. Death is
inevitable for us but Jesus will come in
glory and our tomb will be found empty.
Our body will not undergo the
corruption of death. Jesus has already
destroyed death, its power and its effect.
Corruption is the effect of death.
As Easter asks us to make an act of faith
in Jesus’ rising from the dead as the Lord
of Life it also prods us to hope that
someday we will rise with him in the
future. AS St. Paul would put it in his
Letter to the Romans, “Oh, death where
is you victory. Oh, grave where is your
sting.” To this reality, we add: “For we
are more than conquerors through
Christ who love us.”
