In 1916 the Royal Aircraft actory designed tw ingle-scat fighters powered by the 150 h.p, Hispono-Suiza engine. The S.E.S went into production at the Royal Aircraft Factory, the later aircraft having wings of slightly reduced span. A few of the aircraft went to Nos 40 and 60 Squadrons, and from the start of its career the S. 5 was the most successful.
