It is the term used to describe the physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioural responses to events that are appraised

as threatening or challenging.

These are events that causes stress either coming from the person himself or from an external source and range from relatively mild to severe. Types: 1. Distress 2. Eustress

Distress -occurs when people experience unpleasant stressors Eustress -results from positive events that make demands on a person to adapt or change

Catastrophe -an unpredictable event that happens on a large scale causing stress

*Pressure h occurs when people needs to work harder, faster or do more. *Uncontrollability h lack of control in a situation (the less the control, the higher the degree of stress). *Frustration h occurs when people are blocked or prevented from achieving a desired goal or fulfilling a perceived need. to harm or destroy.

a. External Frustration h losses, rejections, failures are the sources. b. Internal Frustration h occur when a goal or need cannot be attained because of personal characteristics. *Aggressionh actions meant to harm or destroy; typical reaction to frustration. a. Displaced Aggression h taking out ones frustration on less threatening, more available targets. b. Escape/Withdrawalh take the form of leaving.

*Approach-Approach h a person desires for two goals, each of which is attractive. *Avoidance-Avoidanceh much more stressful; the choice is between two or more goals or events that are unpleasant. *Approach-Avoidancehlittle different in that they only involve one goal or event.

*Double Approach-Avoidance h the choice is between two goals that have both positive and negative elements to each goal *Multiple ApproachAvoidanceh one would have more than two goals or options to consider
