Depths Pauline Johnson Serene dark pool with all your colors dulled Your dreamless waves by twilight

slumber lulled Your warmth that flamed because the hot sun hushed Your lip vermillion that his kisses crushed Pale are the tints he left of gold and tan For dusk's soft, cloudy grays have smothered them Where yonder shores tree terraced outlines melt The shadows circle like a belt. And down far down, and down far down within the sable deep A white star soul awakens from it's sleep O little lake, o little lake with twilight interlinked Your darkling shores, your margin indistinct. More in your depth's, more in your depth's uncertainty there lies Than when you dream all of the sunset dyes. Like to the poet's, to the poet's soul you seem to be A depth no hand can touch, no eye can see. And melancholy's dusky clouds drift through The singer's songs as twilight drifts o'er you O life that saddens for all the colours fled, Within your depths a diamond wakes instead, Within your depths a diamond wakes instead.
