Advent: A Time of Preparation:

In the Catholic Church, Advent is a period of preparation, extending over four Sundays, before Christmas. (For more details, see When Does Advent Start?) The word Advent comes from the Latin advenio, to come to, and thus refers to the coming of Christ. This refers, first of all, to our celebration of Christs birth at Christmas; but second, to the coming of Christ in our lives through grace and the Sacrament of Holy Communion; and finally, to His Second Coming at the end of time. Our preparations, therefore, should have all three comings in mind. We need to prepare our souls to receive Christ worthily. First We Fast, Then We Feast: Thats why Advent has traditionally been known as a little Lent. As in Lent, Advent should be marked by increased prayer, fasting, and good works. While the Western Church no longer has a set requirement for fasting during Advent, the Eastern Church, both Catholic and Orthodox, continues to observe what is known as Philips Fast, from November 15 until Christmas. Traditionally, all great feasts have been preceded by a time of fasting, which makes the feast itself more joyful. Sadly, Advent today has supplanted by the Christmas shopping season, so that by Christmas Day, many people no longer enjoy the feast. The Symbols of Advent: In its symbolism, the Church continues to stress the penitential and preparatory nature of Advent. As during Lent, priests wear purple vestments, and the Gloria (Glory to God) is omitted during Mass. The only exception is on the Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday, when priests can wear rose-colored vestments. As on Laetare Sunday during Lent, this exception is designed to encourage us to continue our prayer and fasting, because we can see that Advent is more than halfway over. Celebrating Advent: We can better enjoy Christmasall 12 days of it, from Christmas Day to Epiphanyif we revive Advent as a period of preparation. Abstaining from meat on Fridays, or not eating at all between meals, are good ways to revive the Advent fast. (Not eating Christmas cookies or listening to Christmas music before Christmas is another!) We can incorporate such customs as the Advent wreath, the Saint Andrew Christmas Novena, and the Jesse Tree into our daily ritual, and we can set some time aside for special scripture readings for Advent, which remind us of the threefold coming of Christ. Holding off on putting up the Christmas tree and other decorations is another way to remind ourselves that the feast is not here yet. Traditionally, such decorations were put up on Christmas Eve, but they would not be taken down until after Epiphany, in order to celebrate the Christmas season to its fullest.

Kami nga mga Pamatan-on

Sa tatlo ka adlaw nga Youth Formation, madamo ako sing may natun-an about God. Natun-an ko nga God is always here to guide us. Thats why I always pray and when I started to join the Parish Youth Ministry, Ive changed a lot like my attitude. My experience here in the Youth Formation was so exciting and I have learned a lot. Dapat gali mangin maayo nga leader kag mangin mapasensiyahon, active and responsible kita as a youth. Kag labi sa tanan, I met new friends kag kung paano magpakisama sa ila and how to accept their mistakes as I accept God in my life. I offer my life to God. ~Jerrylyn Alivio (Brgy. Guihaman) Ive learned to give more respect to God, Christian faith and other people. Ive also learned that I should give enough time to pray and reflect. ~Camille Potestad (Brgy. Nabitasan) Ang indi ko malipatan nga experience sa Youth Formation amo ang group dynamics nga BJCCAL. Nag-enjoy gid ako and at the same time, madamo ako na-learn. Pinaka-memorable sa akon ang mga naeksperyensya ko kag ang mga naging bonding ko sa mga fellow participants. Naubra ko ang mga bagay nga talagsa ko lang maubra. Pareho na lang abi sang pagsaot-saot. San Vicente) Three days of spending our time in this Youth Formation is worthy enough for weve done a lot of things that changed our perceptions in life as well as our relationship with God. Before this formation began, I was already thinking that the life within the community that I will be entering is like a rubix cube. Rubix cube because I know that every participant has different characteristics and through this formation, each one of us will have the chance to know more about each other and will be building a deeper friendship. And yes! I was right. Just like a rubix cube, the puzzle wont be solved until such time that its formula would be mastered. Most of all, Ive learned the value of love, acceptance, peace, cooperation and unity. ~Renee Carlo Himar (Brgy. Lapayon) This Parish Youth Formation made me realize that without God we are nothing. Ive learned a lot about: Cycle of Life, Rejection, Circles of Love and many more. Ive also learned that we should always listen to our facilitators, teachers and parents because this is for our own good. My memorable experience was games and the structured learning exercises. Ive really enjoyed it because I always love to play. ~Glyzah Marie Pama (Brgy. Cagamutan Norte) Siguro mastart ako sa learnings. Na-learn ko gid kon paano i-manage ang akon time, magpamalandong, pagrespeto kag pag-intiendi sa mga talks and sharings sang iban. Grabe gid ya, damo gid ko mahidlawan sa amon mga binuhatan kag mahidlaw gid ako mismo sa mga new friends ko. Then in the way ko sila mapakadlaw, nangin happy gid ko! SVF PARISH YOUTH FORMATION 2011 - PART 2 Bilang facilitator sang 3-day Youth Formation, madamo gid nga bagay ang akon natun-an ilabi na gid ang maging isa ka Youth Leader. Na-realisar ko nga indi madali ang maging lider bangud damo ini responsibilities and this is compiled with problems. However, I have learned that in every organization, whenever there is unity and cooperation, everything will be easy. Ang problema nga naga-abot, ginakaya sang grupo, indi ginatubang sang isa lang ka miyembro. My most memorable experience was when I was tasked to give a talk. In my session, Ive requested them to write a letter for their parents and I was able to read them. I was deeply touched by the simple letters and in a way, it made me realize that I was not able to do this for my own parents. Diri ko napamalandungan nga dapat man ko magpasalamat sa tanan nga ginhatag sa akon sang akon parents. Sa sini nga tini-on, masiling ko nga dako gid ang nabulig sang Youth Formation sa akon mismo nga kaugalingon kay nakita ko ang dako ko nga kakulangan and at the same time, my personality was enhanced especially on becoming a good youth leader. Keys gusto mo maghatag sesyon?, ang pamangkot ni Nang Janine sa akon. Bag-o ako nagsabat, nagsulod sa akun huna-huna, Mahandle ko sila ayhan? May makuha man sila ayhan sa akon? Nahadlok ako kay basi hindi ko sila matagaan satisfaction kag kalabanan sa ila mas magulang sa akon. Pero hambal nila gani basta PYM, NEVER SAY NO! Ginpanindugan ko ang prinsipyo sang PYM kag ginbaton ko ang nasiling nga obligasyon. Sin-o makahambal nga kaya namon magprepare for 2 days? Duha man kagab-i ang ang amon sakripisyo nga late na kami gapauli kag maiwat pa ang mga salakyan. Pero natigayon man namon ang tanan. Nagmeeting kami parte sa mga kinahanglanon, nanghatag specific nga mga obligasyon, nagtukod sang mga committees kag madamo pa. Sa pagsugod sang Youth Formation, kinulang gid kami sang manpower. Kung pwede lang tani doblehon o triplehon ang amon lawas, himuon gid namon. Pero wala kami nag-quit kay bal-an namon nga indi ini pag-ihatag ni GOD kung indi namon kaya. Biskan makapoy na, nasadyahan gid ako nga makita ang mga participants nga fulfilled man. Bal-an ko nga may nakuha man sila sa mga sessions nga amon ginpaambit sa ila. Sa pagtapos sang Youth Formation, indi lang ang mga participants ang may nakuha nga learning kundi biskan ako nga facilitator. Natakos ko gid ang akon limitasyon. Na-test ko man ang akon pagka-resourceful kag ang initiative nga bisan wala sounds natigayon man gyapon ang mga buluhaton. Kag sa sini nga Youth Formation, mas nagtubo pa gid ang akon self-confidence. Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward (Hebrew 10:36). Ilabi sa tanan, tungod sang amon pagbinuligay kag confidence nga makaya namun tanan-tanan, nangin madinalag-on ang SVF Parish YOUTH FORMATION 2011. It is also a tool that kindles the hearts of Catholics so that they will remember Gods marvelous plan of salvation that was accomplished through the birth, life and death and rising of Christ who once again walks the earth in our time and presence. Ive learned how to handle the different attitudes of my co-youth (PYM). Ive also learned that time management is important and each of us has differences and similarities. Ive also learned how to hold our temper and how to accept rejection. Rejection, in a way, can develop ourselves. My most important learning in this youth formation are: we should always nourish the child in us, we should really try to overcome the hardships for a better purpose (like letting go for a while the most valuable thing to me which is my cellular phone) and we should also open our hearts to take rejection as part of our life. I would always value the sharing that we had and also our newfound friendship. ~Menelyn Dicen (Sitio Irrigasyon, Brgy. Cagamutan Norte) Natun-an ko nga ang Gino-o yara lang gid permi sa aton tupad. San Vicente) Ang pinakamemorable nga experience ko diri sa Youth Formation is during the time nga nagtalk si Nang Jingky parte sa Storms in Life. Nagtalk siya about how to encounter and face the problems that we meet as we go on with our life. Diri ko na realize nga kon ginagaan kita ni God sang problem, it means may solution ina kag my trust Siya sa imo. Samtang nagadako ang imo problema, amo man kadako ang pagpalangga kag pagsalig ni God sa imo nga masulosyonan mo ina. Kag ang isa pa gid nga lesson nga indi ko gid malimtan amo nga dapat indi kita magtanom sang kalain sang buot sa mga nagahambal sa imo sang malain, sa baylo, pangamuyuan naton sila. ~Michelle Grio (Brgy. Guihaman) At first ko nga enter sa PYM, I felt boredom. But when I was asked para mag-attend sang Youth Formation, I realized nga kon indi ka sincere sa ginahimo mo, indi ka sincere sa self mo, indi ka sincere sa intention mo kon nga-a nag-attend ka, you would never felt the happiness nga na feel sang PYM participants. Actually, sang una daw indi gid ko mabuhi nga wala cellphone, pero sang ginkuha ang cellphone ko sa tatlo ka adlaw, daw okay man lang. Na-learn ko man nga i-discipline ang self ko. Happy ko kay damo na ko friends kag ang pinakamanami sa tanan, naka-share ko sa ila kag amo man sila sa akon. For three days nga stay ko sa Youth Formation, na-realize ko nga di sila pareho sang gina-expect ko. Ive learned so much from this formation. God will always make a way kay ara lang siya pirme even in your darkest time. He will always be there to lift you up when youre down and weary. Our Three-day Youth Formation had shaped me to become a better person - a person who is an integral part of a faith - hungered modern society. This activity had helped me see the real world and my real purpose as a child, student, youth and follower of God. This had challenged me to be more aggressive in terms of passion for service and commitment and in the same way, my experiences moulded me to be more sensitive with the people around me.
