Lebanon lawmaker wants DeWeese to step down Friday, July 18, 2008 By Tom Barnes, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette HARRISBURG -- State Rep. Matt Smith, D-Mt. Lebanon, is joining several other Democratic legislators who are calling for Rep. Bill DeWeese to step down as House majority leader. "The time has come for Rep. DeWeese to relinquish his post as majority leader for the good of our caucus,'' said Mr. Smith, who is holding a press conference today on the matter. In order to advance important issues such as energy conservation and affordable health insurance, "We must bring new leadership into the fold,'' he said. Mr. DeWeese has said he knew nothing about the alleged improper and illegal activities that 12 current or former House Democratic members and staffers have been charged with. Mr. DeWeese has said there is no reason for him to step down as House leader. Others who are callling for Mr. DeWeese to step down are Reps. Harry Readshaw, DCarrick, John Yudichak, D-Luzerne County, and Bill Keller, D-Philadelphia.
