The compressed air tank shown has an inner diameter of 450 mm and a uniform wall thickness of 6-mm. Knowing that the gage pressure on the tank is 1.20 MPa, determine the maximum normal stress and the maximum in-plane shearing stress at point b on the tank.

The state of plane stress shown occurs in a machine component made of steel with y = 325 MPa. Using the maximum distortion energy criterion and the maximum shear stress criterion, determine whether yielding will occur when 0 = 200 MPa, 0 = 240 MPA, and 0 = 280 MPa. Also determine the corresponding factor of safety in each case.
