WHAT IS ACID RAIN?

Acid rain is rainwater that has been contaminated with air pollution so that it has had its acidity increased. The pH of rain is usually 5.6. Acid rain is usually considered rainwater with a pH 5.3 or lower. There is acid rain, acid snow and acid fog (acid precipitation).

WHAT CAUSES ACID RAIN?

Acid rain is caused by: Nitrogen oxides (NOx) : Sulfur dioxides (SO2): Carbon dioxide(CO2): Carbon monoxide(CO): The main two sources of acid rain are NOx and SO2.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE AIR WHEN IT COMES TO ACID RAIN?

When the chemicals listed above react with the water vapor, they create pollutants such as sulphuric acid (H2SO4), ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and nitric acid (HNO3). they travel a long way and then comes down as a type of acid precipitation.

WHERE IS ACID RAIN A PROBLEM?

Acid rain is a problem in eastern Canada, in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, due to a lack of alkalinity. if there was a presence of an alkaline substance, the lakes would of been able to neutralise the acidity of acid rain. As in western Canada, there are these alkaline substances and therefore can neutralise only some of the acidity.

DID THE ACIDITY OF RAIN GET WORSE OVER THE YEARS?

To my surprise, the acidity of acid rain is getting better, but not by a whole lot.
