"Herb Kelleher: The Thought Leader Interview." Interview by Chuck Lucier and Herb Kelleher. Strategy+Business: 1-7. Booze&Co. Web. 1 Jan. 2012. <http://www.strategybusiness.com/article/04212?gko=8cb4f>. This was a great source because it was an interview with the man who started Southwest himself; Herb Kelleher. It also had some great facts and quotes. Jet blue & Ryanair (an England airline) say their inspiration was Southwest. My favorite quote in the whole article was We were going to charge low fares, come hell or high water. We were foing to enable more people to fly. Herb Kelleher Kelleher, Herb. "On The Record." Interview by Marianne Lavelle. U.S. News and World Report 19 Feb. 2007: 51. Military and Government Collection. Web. 10 Dec. 2011. http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/delivery?sid=6b070d77-3990-4335-ae66-266e57fb491. This interview had some good information on why the airline industry is such a challenging industry to stay in business, and much harder to make money. The main reason earning money in the airline industry is because of fuel costs. Also the government charges taxes on airlines also hurting their chances of staying in business. I also learned that other airlines such as Delta find it really hard to compete with Southwest Airlines because they cant change their business model enough to drop their prices to compete with Southwest Airlines.

Aurizio, Paticia D. "Southwest Airlines: Lessons in Loyalty." Human Resource Solutions Nov.Dec. 2008: 389-92. Print. This is an article about how Southwest Airlines hires their employees. I like this because it showed what Southwest was doing to let the lower class fly right now. They just didn't revolutionize the airline industry back then, they are revolutionizing it today.

Also it gave me some great, facts that Southwest Airlines is now the fifth largest airline in the nation. David, Herreman. Journal of Organizational Change Managemnet 12.3 (1999): 221-33. Print. This article was great because it shows another main part of the Southwest business model spirit. This article had more interesting facts.. It said that SWA has brought the BWI back to life after 9/11. "Distuprive Innovation: the Southwest Airlines Case Revisited." Strategy and Leadership 39.4 (2011): 31-34. Print. This was a great overview article on SWA business model. Some key points are no meals, no assigned seats, only fly one type of plane, point to point travailing, not pub and spoke style, and stay in the air. On the ground you lose money. Reuters. "Company News; Airlines Match Reduced Fares." The New York Times 21 Dec. 1989, late ed., Section D sec.: 4. BYU Library. Web. 10 Dec. 2011. This article showed how SWA didnt just offer lower costs, it made other airlines change their prices to compete. It also showed a financial battle in which SWA lowered costs then USAir followed them and then SWA lowered prices again and USAir followed again. This is one of the ways SWA changed the airline industry. Serwer, Andy. This article was great because it showed some copycat airlines like Jet blue and Ryanair. It showed how different SWA is because SWA doesnt model after a maveric style business approach. SWA has its own business plan and spirit. Strategic Direction. "How Corporate Culture Helped Southwest Airlines Become The Best." Strategic Direction 21.4 (2005): 16-18. Print. This article that SWA doesnt just do whats frugal. It does what its spirit tells it to. SWA didnt lay off any staff after 9/11 because it would have hurt their corporate culture and that year SWA was the only company to make money.
