ACET208 SURVEYING II PRACTICAL EXERCISE 2 CALCULATION OF VOLUME FOR SOIL EXCAVATION

Instructor:Dr Skevi Perdikou

Objectives To use levelling operations for volume calculation. To calculate the volume of soil excavation to the formation level of a basement.

Procedure The four corners of the structure shall be located in the field and marked. The midpoints (or any point) for each side are also marked and each group will take spot levels at these 8 points and also the centre of the basement layout O. These levels will be reduced to an initial TBM shown on site with RL at +50.00m. The formation level of the basement is at +42.50m. A E B Structure layout ABCD O F G

Record all levels in a table as follows, and measure the length of AE, EB, BG, GD, DH, HC, CF, FA. Station 1 1 1 Target TBM A E Staff reading Rise/ Fall -----Reduced Level (m) +50.00 R1 R2 Excavation height h (m) -----hA = R1-42.50 hE = R2-42.50

Assuming vertical sides for the cut, the volume of excavated soil V may be calculated from the following expression: V = [ (Area of triangle) x (average excavation height for triangle) ]

Assignment Your typed assignment should include: Cover page with title for the practical exercise, your name and date of the exercise. The layout of the structure, with all levels recorded (as well as the TBM). Booking and reduction of level data for your team (Table 1, as outlined in previous page) A table showing all the 8 lengths measured (Table 2) Side AE EB Length (m)

A table with the calculated areas of triangles (total of 8) and relevant average excavation height for each triangle as shown below (Table 3). Triangle AEO FAO Area (m2) (AFxAE) / 2 (AFxAE) / 2 Average excavated height (m) ( hA+ hE + hO ) /3 ( hA+ hF + hO ) /3 Excavated Volume V1 V2

Determine the total excavation volume required to reach the formation level. If the cost of excavation is 12 /m3, calculate the total cost of the excavation.

Submission date The assignment should be submitted no later than 2 weeks from the day of the practical. Notes Present your tables in spreadsheet or word format. Please ask after the lectures if you are not sure how to proceed with calculations. Marks will be deducted for poor presentation and incomplete report or missing data. Late submittals will be penalized. You may work with your team but your report should be your own individual work.
