Chemical Feed Tanks in Water Treatment Plants

With many fiberglass reinforced chemical storage tanks at water treatment plants, the plastic material creates a
colored vessel so that the level of the medium cannot be seen through the tank wall. The older alternative of a site
glass introduces a weak point that if broken will result in a chemical spill. Modern water treatment plants are
equipped with computer controls and automation and many water treatment plants are remotely operated as a result
of the automation.

At the Town of Southington, CT , to determine the level the operator must climb on
top of the tank, open up the top and look down inside with a flashlight. One tank is
flocculant and the other is caustic for pH neutralization.

Tanks are tied into the plant Bristol-Babcock DCS control system that is connected
remotely via radio to the Town’s main control room. .

Tanks are 18 feet deep (5.5m) and approximately five feet wide. There is no
agitation or mixing in the tanks and they are filled from the bottom so there is no splashing.
The sensor is mounted through the lid of the tank by means of the integral 2” NPT fitting and the lid is hinged.

The LPU2127 is simple to setup by means of an integral keypad and LCD display. Numerous filtering, gain and
sensitivity adjustments are available to tailor the sensor to the specifics of the tank. Tanks up to 40 feet deep (12m)
can be monitored. It also carries Hazardous Location approvals by CSA for UL508 and C22.2 Classified
environments. If the display should be at a remote location, or if a HART interface is required over the 2-wire, 4-
20mA connection, other models like LPU2428 (blind) or LPU2128 (removable keypad) are available.
