VAN GOGH SUNFLOWERS

1ST GRADE FOUR ONE-HOUR CLASSES

Weaving Background Information

Weaving is a traditional craft that once was extremely important to everyday life. Craftsmen wove textiles to make things like clothing and blankets. Now computerized machines weave most of our clothes for us, but there are still some craftsmen who weave by hand. Weaving is done on an instrument called a loom, which is anything that you can attach threads to in a way you can weave with. Textile weaving is an important tradition to many cultures around the world, including the American southwest (Native American), the Amazon region, Mexico, Ancient Persia, and Europe. Some artists wove patterns and designs that talked about their cultural heritage. In modern days, artists weave cultural messages into their works as well. The term craft is used to describe the artistic practice of wood, clay, glass, textile, and metal making in the decorative arts.

Usually the piece has a function or decorative purpose. work. Craftsmen are very skilled in the technical knowledge of how to make their specific product, but often impart cultural or personal symbolism into their work. People who work as craftsmen can have a wide variety of careers. They can sell their work on a

small scale by attending craft fairs and art fairs, they can work or larger companies and design products to be manufactured, they can work on commission from clients, and much more. There are many opportunities to take classes in specific crafts, so a lot of craftsmen can become teachers as well.
