Sunday, November 13, 2011 BEAMS The shape of a steel I-beam strongly resembles a capital I in cross section, which explains the name. The steel I-beam has a strong central core capped with flang es on either side. I-beams, also known as H-beams, W-beams (for "wide flange"), rolled steel joist (RSJ). The horizontal elements of the "I" are flanges, while the vertical elemen t is the web. By far the most common structural material is steel due to its st rength to weight ratio. Steel is one of the most common materials used to make I-beams, since it can wit hstand very heavy loads in flexure meaning bending. Usually a beam carries verti cal gravitational force but is also capable of carrying horizontal loads general ly in the case of an earthquake. The most commonly found steel beam is the I beam or the wide flanged beam also k nown by the name of universal beam or stouter sections as the universal column. Such beams are commonly used in the construction works The most commonly found types of steel beams are varied and they are mentioned b elow: 1. I beams

2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Wide flange beams HP shape beams Special shape non-standard beams H beams Junior beams

In todays modern construction the beams are generally made up of materials like: 1. 2. 3. Steel Wood Reinforced concrete

Thursday, January 26, 2012 Tee Sections Welcome to my blogs 50th posting!Thank You Readers. I had no idea how many Id done; but my sites Blog Archive said the last one was th e 49th,(2010-20 Posts, 2011-26 Posts & 2012-3 Posts) so this must be the 50th. I am so grateful to everyone who reads my blog. I have no way of knowing who you are unless you leave a comment, but please know Im very, very thankful to each a nd every one of you. On this special occassion let us discuss about the special shape steel.Hot Rolle d Steel Slit Steel Tee Bars Tee Sections are one type of hot rolled steel and shaped like a Capital letter T . It is having two types. One is manufacture by hot rolled steel and another one is split from I- beam & H-Beam. Split Tees are made by splitting a beam down th e web yielding a pair of Tees Indian Standard Hot Rolled Steel Tee Bars may be classified as follows and it is as per IS 1173: 1978

1. Indian Standard Rolled Normal Tee bars (ISNT) 2. Indian Standard Rolled Deep Legged Tee bars (ISDT) 3. Indian Standard Slit Light Weight Tee bars (ISLT) 4. Indian Standard Slit Medium Weight Tee bars (ISMT) 5. Indian Standard Slit Tee bars from H-Sections (ISHT) Tee-Sections are designated by the respective abbreviations followed by their de pth. Example Rolled Normal Tee Bar of depth 50mm is designated by ISNT 50 "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new". Sunday, February 27, 2011 CHEQUERED PLATE Chequered plates are same as plates, However small projection of same steel as p er picture will be there. The small projection is kept for skid resistance and it will be used for walk way platforms. Generally chequered plates are designated as Cheqd.PL -A o/p X Length X Width Example: Cheqd PL-6 o/p X 1150 X 750 The term o/p means "over plate" or "over plain". It means thickness of the plate is excluding the chequer The weight of chequred plate is higher than plane plate considering the project ions (Chequers). Total weight: length (m) x width (m) x thickness (mm) x 7.85 + extra weight = kg /plate Generally the extra weight will be 6.1Kg approximately. However the following ta ble shows the weight of chequerd plates

Please note that sectional properties of the chequered plate while designing for bending and deflection, are based on the plain thickness of the plate, excluding thickness of the chequer.
