Nature vs.

Nurture

The debate on Nature versus Nurture on how human behaves had been carried on for so long from the 13th century and started by the French. Nature arguments circulate on biological facts that our genes are the one which determined human behaviour in their life. Scientist believes that genes arrangement can be changed irregularly, and that makes human behaviour to change. However, Nurture arguments circulate on the fact that human behaviour is determined by their socialisation in their own community. Human behaviour can be changed, and It happens when human socialise with other community with different norms and values. A lot of studies and research had been made by scientist and biologist to prove that nature arguments are right and acceptable. For example, a study had been made that in United States on their hardcore criminals. The study found that most of them were to be labelled as super male which has an extra Y chromosome making their pair of sex chromosome to be XYY. The debate about the XYY karyotype can be seen as part of the old debate about nature and nurture. The belief that nature, or biological determinism and inheritance, is more important than environment and education was the basis of the field that Francis Galton (1822-1911) called "eugenics." According to Galton, talent, character, intellect, disposition, and other aspects of natural ability, as well as physical features, such as height and eye colour, is governed by heredity. Another research shows that, kids below age 12 are easier to learn different languages. Recent studies supports that human actually do have a gene of ability to learn languages efficiently before the age of 12. However, nurture arguments can simply counter these claims by looking at how do the criminals and kids socialise before. As for the criminals, the study should also see or look at how and why these criminals start their criminals career . They might do their crime because of hardship in their life or to try out new things or even been trapped. These questions had to be answered first before the nature arguments could be accepted. As for the kids, even the so called language gene might disappear in the age of 12, human can still develop their language skills after the age of 12 by socializing. For example in Malaysia, people could simply master a few languages by just socializing with different races as the cultures of people in Malaysia were very tolerance. On the other side, sociologist also had made a few researches that human behaviour is a product of socialisation. For example, the famous research on the roles played by the gender of 3 different tribes in Truman Island. There is a tribe when both gender acts passively and feminine way whereas there is a tribe which the male act femininely and passive while the woman of the tribe are the ones who act masculine and be the family leader. This shows that even though human sex had been determined genetically when the human was born, but the roles the human played depends on their socialisation in their community. Another example to support the nurture arguments is the feral children. They were humans. No one denies that. However, lack of interaction with humans and no socialisation occurs within the human community made them fail to act humanly. They did not know proper way to walk and learn humans languages. One of the best-known examples, Bello, sometimes referred to as the Nigerian

Chimp Boy by the media, was found in 1996. No one is exactly sure of his age but many estimated that he was about 2 years old when he was discovered. He was found in the Nigerian forest and is both physically and mentally disabled, possibly the explanation for his abandonment at six months of age (a very common practice within the Fulani tribe). At such a young age, Bello of course could not fend for himself but somehow chimpanzees that lived within the forest took him in and raised him. He took on many chimpanzee behaviours, walking like them and displaying many of their animalistic behaviours. In conclusion, human behaviours are mainly be developed by socialisation which supports the nurture arguments. Nature build up the base for humankind to grow and develop but their environment are the one which shapes how will human act and behave in their life.
