Other announcements:
Wouter would like to have a short impression of the Atlanta conference. Jan van den
Berge: surprised by the Bb patent discussion, great to see such a vibrant community
driven by institutions, OSP is very well fit for Dutch situation. Victor Maijer:
community is growing, especially focal point in UK (Cambridge) is developing; as a
sort of aftermath Victor can announce that Stoas has signed a partner agreement
with the rSmart group. Frank Benneker adds to this that indeed focal point of
community is moving more to Europe; but still programmers are still needed. Wytze
adds that in some processes within the Sakai community there is room for
improvement (e.g. The User Experience, the UI, but also internationalisation).
See also the report on http://elearning.surf.nl/sakai_nl/xxx
Thomas Place has informed Wytze that Chuck Severance will deliver a talk during the
upcoming International Ticer school (August 2007, Tilburg) on e-research.
Jan van den Berge mentions that we should give the guests for the Sakai conference
in Amsterdam a very warm welcome. Some of them are very keen on some social
event.

Meeting notes Sakai SIG NL (31 jan 2007)

Sakai at our institutions - 1

• Universiteit van Amsterdam
• Universiteit Twente
• Stoas
• Leidse OnderwijsInstellingen (LOI)
• Portfolio4U
• ROC Gilde Opleidingen
• Vrije Universiteit
• Hotelschool Den Haag

Universiteit Twente: total of 8 pilots. Also technical trials will start soon, focused on
integration issues with current systems. Starting to create more awareness within
3TU. Yesterday very successful lunch meeting around Sakai. Check
http://www.utwente.nl/elo for more info.
Hotelschool Den Haag: things are moving again, with help from Stoas. Sakai will be
implemented in conjunction with a curriculum redesign.
Stoas: working with Hotelschool. Also working with two other clients. A lot of
information requests on Sakai.
Universiteit van Amsterdam: OSP in production, networking in Amsterdam region
(especially with Portfolio4U and Edia) has begun, recently started with project
rounds to fund possible innovative use of Sakai. Also working with Sakai
Foundation on locations for the Monday sessions of the Sakai conference (which
will not be held in the Movenpick hotel). Call for papers for conference will open
soon.
Portfolio4U: Started 2 years ago with Sakai (after long history of IBM Lotus). Very
successful with ROC/MBO (secondary education): 17 installations of OSP. Total of
5000 students working with OSP right now. Working with Kennisnet on eportfolio
specification. Will be commercial affiliate of Sakai Foundation very soon.
Vrije Universiteit: Interested in Sakai. Small investigation done in opensource,
more specifically Sakai. Using Bb right now, but becoming less and less happy with
it.
ROC Gilde Opleidingen: See presentation. Mainly end-user. No aspiration to gain
technical knowledge. Portfolio4U is their technical partner.
LOI: worked hard on integration with homegrown admin systems. Going live with
OSP next week with around 50 students. Gradual rollout foreseen.

Sakai at our institutions - 2

• Edia
• Universiteit Utrecht
• Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep
• Omix
• Memotrainer
• SURF

Memotrainer: see presentation. Working with other clients in commercial sector.

Universiteit Utrecht: not much news. There are three contenders for the new
central VLE for UU: Sharepoint, Bb/WebCT combination, Sakai. Pilots with the
systems should start soon.
SURF: will possibly initiate a project whereby 'generic' integration between SIS and
VLE. Frank mentions that Oracle is heading the IMS Enterprise redesign group to
facilitate exactly this.
Edia: installed Sakai 2.2 for approx 1000 end-users. Seeking more co-production
opportunities with the UvA. Developing a content-tool (will be ready end of 2007).
Also working with a biotech company. Edia is really interested in sharing developer
resources.
Omix: developed a student registration system for a client. Want to use Sakai
framework for further development in the area of the VLE.
Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep: chosen Sakai as VLE platform. Stoas will work with
Mondriaan on custom development based on rSmart solution. Hans would like to
present on our next meeting (4 April). For digital portfolio they are using a
PeopleSoft solution. After summer 2007 there will be wider implementation of
Sakai.

Memotrainer spotlight
• Walter Brand
• www.memotrainer.nl

Walter Brand: we developed a few tools for Elsevier Opleidingen.

This was quite do-able after a steep learning curve. Made extensive
use of existing services within Sakai.

See separate Powerpoint presentation.

ROC Gilde Opleidingen spotlight

• Pedro van de Schoor

Presentation of the ways Gilde sees a portfolio: tool for the student,
which spawns interesting discussions at every institution. Technical
details are handled by Portfolio4U. On some aspects the ROC Gilde
organisation is not yet ready for large-scale use of a digital portfolio.
Gilde will move forward with the OSP tool.

See separate Powerpoint presentation for more details.

Meeting notes Sakai SIG NL (31 jan 2007)

Breakout session

• Translation into Dutch of Sakai/OSP terminology

• Mark Breuker (LOI)

How to move forward with Dutch translation?

LOI has published their proposals for translation of terminology.
Everyone is invited to give feedback (no later that 1 March 2007):
please provide feedback on translations that are Unacceptabe
according to you.
Later we should divide tasks: a certain institution is responsible for
a few tools within the NL language. Or/and SURF will facilitate the
process and/or money needed.
We discuss the Help tool (and texts): they are only available in
English. One issue is that the Help tool is not aware of international
settings etc.

Other items

• Who wants to write on the weblog and/or

themasite?
• Who joins me at Innovatium (free ticket!)?
• Joint meeting with SURF Portfolio community?

• Your questions?

Marij Veugelers has asked if it would be a good idea to have a joint

meeting with the Portfolio community. 18 april would have been a
great date, but then the portfolio community has already set their
own meeting.
Marij would like to exchange information on didactical use of OSP.
She will be present at our April 4 meeting if all goes well.
