I. Introduction
Thank you for giving another Drobo storage device a good home! We at Data Robotics, Inc. have been working since 2004 to make protecting, storing and managing your digital content truly effortless.
Why Drobo?

The Drobo family of products (Drobo, DroboPro and DroboElite) provides effortless, safe and expandable storage. There are many different ways to store and protect digital content, but Drobo is the only fully automatic storage device that performs many data management tasks without user effort. Heres what you can expect:
Fully automated data protection and management

Drobo automatically configures itself for data protection so you dont have to. When a drive fails, your data is still safe (and all drives do eventually fail). Drobo senses any corrupted data and ensures that you only access non-corrupt data. No downtime to add capacity. Just add a drive to an empty Data Bay, or replace a smaller drive with a larger one regardless of capacity, speed, or manufacturer. After a drive is installed into an empty bay, the new drive capacity is immediately available and protected. Drobos Data Bay indicator lights tell you everything you need to know!
Infinite expansion

Upgrading capacity is as simple as adding ink to a printer. Mix n match any 3.5 (SATA) hard drives; no worrying about matching make, model or capacity of Drobos existing drives. Upgrade foreverjust replace Drobos smallest drive with a larger capacity drive. No data migration or reconfiguration is required.

Who is Data Robotics, Inc.?

Data Robotics, Inc. was formed in 2004 in Californias Silicon Valley with a vision to take the pain out of storage management. Data Robotics, Inc. developed the technology inside Drobo for people who have to protect their valuable digital assets, but hate to because its complex and time consuming. For those people, we created Drobo, the worlds first storage robot. It is a fully automated data storage system that provides the only truly effortless, safe and expandable storage solution. Unlike outdated technologies that emerged twenty plus years ago and the frustrating products on the market today, Drobo is an industry-changing product line that combines the advanced concepts of storage virtualization and cybernetics, to take the pain out of storage management.

II. Getting started

Three easy steps
To set up your DroboPro or DroboElite, you will need to do the following: 1. Install Drobo Dashboard After installation, launch Drobo Dashboard and leave it running while you complete the setup. 2. Insert drives Use any 3.5 SATA drives. Start with at least two drives to protect your valuable data. If you plan to use dual disk redundancy, start with at least three drives. (All data on the drives will be erased.) 3. Connect cables Connect the DroboPro/DroboElite to your computer and then connect power. Use the USB connection during initial configuration to set IP address(es), set passwords (DroboElite), create volumes, etc. If you are setting up a DroboElite, then use the iSCSI connection for formatting and transferring data. (Note: you cannot transfer data using USB on DroboElite.) Drobo Dashboard will automatically discover your DroboPro/DroboElite. Once it does, follow Drobo Dashboards onscreen instructions. You are well on your way to protecting your valuable data. For more details on any of these steps, please continue to read through this User Guide and then refer to the appropriate section for specific information.

Selecting hard drives

All Drobo storage products, including DroboPro and DroboElite, are unlike typical storage devices. DroboPro and DroboElite make it extremely easy to increase storage capacity in the future just by inserting additional drives or replacing existing drives with larger ones. This means you can buy the storage you need today and then easily expand later. You can save hundreds of dollars over time. Your Drobo storage device doesnt care what manufacturer, capacity or rotational speed of hard drive you install. It accepts standard 3.5 inch internal SATA1 or SATA2 (also referred to as SATA/150 or SATA/300) hard drives. SSD and older IDE or ATA-type drives will not work.

The number and capacity of drives determine how much usable protected storage your DroboPro or DroboElite provides. Take the guesswork out by using our Capacity Calculator (www.drobo.com/calculator), a web-based tool which determines the usable protected capacity, based on any combination of drives. To calculate the approximate capacity yourself, omit the largest drive and then add-up the capacity of the remaining drives. If you plan to use dual disk redundancy, omit the largest two drives. A note about drive capacity

Some years ago, computer manufacturers and hard drive manufacturers started using different systems for measuring capacity. The net result is that not all of a drives rated capacity is available to your computer. For example, a 750GB drive will have approximately 700GB worth of capacity. This discrepancy has nothing to do with Drobo storage devices.

Keeping your product up-to-date

During your initial setup, Drobo Dashboard asks you if you want to check for updates automatically. We highly recommend you select the Yes option to assure optimal performance of your DroboPro or DroboElite. This feature enables you to keep both Drobo Dashboard and your products firmware current. Subsequently, you will receive a notice

when a newer version is available. You can check for the most current versions anytime at www.drobo.com/support/updates.

Best Practices
There are a number of things you can do to protect your valuable data. Using a DroboPro or DroboElite storage product is obviously a major step. However, there are additional actions you can take to provide even greater safety for your data. III. Setup
Install Drobo Dashboard
Before setting up your DroboPro or DroboElite, you need to install Drobo Dashboard on your computer. Drobo Dashboard is used to format your Drobo storage device if you are connecting it to a Windows or Mac OS X computer. Also, it will install the Microsoft iSCSI initiator on older Windows operating systems, such as XP and Windows Server 2003, if the initiator is not already installed. After setup, you can use Drobo Dashboard to monitor and manage your device(s) and volumes. Drobo Dashboard is included on the Drobo Resource CD. You can also download Drobo Dashboard by visiting www.drobo.com/support/updates. Insert the Drobo Resource CD that came with DroboPro/DroboElite into your computer. From the on-screen menu, select Install. After Drobo Dashboard is installed, it will start automatically. It will display Waiting to Connect until you complete the hardware setup.

Inserting drives into DroboPro/DroboElite

Once youve chosen the number of drives and which capacities to install, all you have to do is remove the face plate by simply pulling it off and then slide the drives into the Data Bays. It doesnt matter which drive goes into which Data Bay. You should note that any pre-existing data on the drives will be erased. Be sure not to touch any exposed hard drive circuit boards after unpacking.

First orient the drive connectors so that the connectors are pointed towards the DroboElite and they are facing the left side of the

DroboPro/DroboElite. The top silver colored plate of the drive should be facing to the right. Open the Drive Lock by pressing it down and slide the drive into the Data Bay until you feel the connector mate at the rear of the unit. If the connectors seat properly, the Drive Lock will snap behind the drive, securing it into place.
Warning! Do not place your DroboPro or DroboElite on its side during normal operation. There is a chance the drives will disconnect if you do this. For optimal performance and protection of your data we recommend that DroboPro/DroboElite remain in its normal horizontal position.

Connect DroboPro to your computer

There are several ways to connect DroboPro to your computer. You should select the fastest connection you have available. Please note that only one connection type can be used at any given time. The connections, listed slowest to fastest, are USB 2.0, FireWire 800 and iSCSI.

USB 2.0

DroboPro gives you the option to use USB 2.0 to connect to your computer. While not as fast as FireWire 800 or iSCSI, it is found on every computer made in the past few years.
FireWire 800

FireWire 800 will give you excellent performance with your DroboPro. If your computer does not have a FireWire 800 port, then please contact your computer manufacturer for a compatible add-on card. (Make sure that you select a card that fully supports your computer and operating system since not all FireWire cards provide optimal performance.) If

your computer only has a FireWire 400 connector then you will need to purchase a FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 cable.
Note: Windows based computers will not get optimal performance with the standard Microsoft FireWire drivers. Visit our support knowledgebase at www.drobo.com/support for details on how to optimize performance with FireWire on Windows (search keywords FireWire performance). iSCSI

iSCSI uses a standard Ethernet cable to give you the best performance possible with your DroboPro. We recommend directly connecting the DroboPros iSCSI connection to your computer if your computer has two or more Ethernet ports. (If you dont have a second Ethernet port and want to use iSCSI, then you will need to install a standard gigabit Ethernet add-on card that is compatible with your computer.) One Ethernet port should be used to connect your computer to your local network and the other should be used to connect to DroboPros iSCSI port. Directly connecting will insure you achieve the best performance. You can also connect your DroboPro via iSCSI through a switch, where one port of the switch is connected to your computer and another port is connected to the DroboPros iSCSI connection. You will need to manually set an IP address on the DroboPro (see Configurations on page 9). Depending on the amount of traffic using your switch, connecting it in this manner might impact the performance.

Connect DroboElite to your computer

Your DroboElite provides one USB 2.0 connector and two iSCSI connectors. The USB connector is used for administrative purposes only, including initial setup. You must use the iSCSI connector(s) for formatting volumes and data transfers. Using both iSCSI ports will allow you to get the maximum performance out of your DroboElite. To set up your DroboElite, you will first connect DroboElite to your computer using the USB connector. After configuring the iSCSI port(s) for your network, safely shut down DroboElite, disconnect the USB cable, and connect your iSCSI cable(s). Note that you must use the iSCSI interface to format volumes on your DroboElite. You cannot format using the USB connection. See Configurations on page 9 for the setup procedure that matches your environment.

Connect power
After you have connected DroboPro/DroboElite to your network, simply connect the power cord to the back of the device and to an AC power source. Then press the power button located on the back of the DroboPro/DroboElite. When the device is first turned on, all of the Drive Lights and Capacity Indicator Lights are illuminated.
Note: As with all electronic equipment, we recommend connecting your DroboPro/DroboElite to a surge protector or uninterruptible power supply (UPS), designed for electronics.

Configurations

iSCSI

There are three basic configurations you can use to set up iSCSI on your DroboPro or DroboElite:

Configuration 1: DroboPro/DroboElite connected to a switch that is NOT directly connected to a network Configuration 2: DroboPro/DroboElite connected to a switch that is connected to a network Configuration 3: Direct-connect to a computer The following apply to all configurations: Drobo Dashboard is required for iSCSI setup. Please install Drobo Dashboard with the CD that came with your DroboPro/DroboElite or from www.drobo.com/support/updates. To get the best performance with your iSCSI connection, you must use a Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000) network card. . A Fast Ethernet (10/100) network card will provide poor iSCSI performance. DroboPro has one iSCSI port and DroboElite has two. Since DroboElite supports jumbo frames, make sure your Gigabit Ethernet card supports modifying the MTU setting. On the DroboElite, you can access the MTU setting in Drobo Dashboard: Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Settings -> iSCSI A standard Ethernet cable gives you the best iSCSI performance with your DroboPro/DroboElite. One is included with DroboPro and two are included in the original DroboElite package. Ensure your firewall is configured to allow inbound and outbound network connections for the Drobo Dashboard application (iSCSI uses port 3260). Windows XP 64-bit and Windows Server 2003 64-bit computers should have .NET 2.0 (or later) framework installed in order to connect to DroboPro/DroboElite. An iSCSI initiator is required when connecting over Ethernet. On Windows computers, we use Microsofts iSCSI initiator that is included in Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 and beyond. (If you are running earlier versions, Drobo Dashboard will install the Microsoft iSCSI initiator.) For Macs, we provide our own iSCSI initiator, installed by the Drobo Dashboard installer. If you are running Linux, please consult our website, www.drobo.com/linux for further information. ESX users can use the iSCSI initiator provided by VMware. For more information on Linux and ESX please visit the Data Robotics support site at www.drobo.com/support.

If you are using a computer that is running Windows Vista, SP1 (or later) must be installed. Otherwise, Drobo Dashboard cannot discover DroboPro/DroboElite.
Configuration 1: DroboPro/DroboElite connected to a switch that is NOT directly connected to a network:

If you have a 1 Gbps switch, you can connect DroboPro or DroboElite and your designated computer (in other words, the mount point) to the same switch. You can connect multiple DroboPros or DroboElites to the same switch, provided the Drobo storage devices and your computer(s) each have unique static IP addresses (see below). You will need to assign an IP address to the iSCSI port(s) in this configuration. Use the USB connection to configure the port(s). Please note that depending on the amount of traffic using your switch, connecting it in this manner might impact the performance. Setup: 1. Once your DroboPro or DroboElite has connected successfully via the USB connection (including successful discovery by Drobo Dashboard), click Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Settings -> iSCSI. 2. Choose a unique IP address for each iSCSI connection and each DroboPro/DroboElite you are configuring and set any other configuration settings. 3. After saving your settings, safely shut your DroboPro/DroboElite down (Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Shutdown) and disconnect the USB cable. 4. Connect one end of the supplied Ethernet cable to the iSCSI (Ethernet) port on the back of your DroboPro/DroboElite. Then connect the other end to the switch. On DroboElite, repeat for the second iSCSI port if applicable. 5. Plug in the power cord and flip the power toggle switch on the rear left side of DroboPro/DroboElite. 6. After the boot sequence, Drobo Dashboard should recognize your Drobo storage device(s) and you can begin the volume setup and formatting process.

Configuration 2: DroboPro/DroboElite connected to a switch that is connected to a network:

You will need to assign an IP address to the iSCSI port(s) in this configuration. Use the USB connection to configure the port(s). Be aware that a DroboPro/DroboElite in this configuration might impact the network performance. Also, the performance of the DroboPro/DroboElite might be impacted by the network traffic. Setup: 1. Once your DroboPro or DroboElite has connected successfully with the USB connection (including successful discovery by Drobo Dashboard), click Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Settings > iSCSI. 2. Choose a unique IP address for each iSCSI connection on each DroboPro/DroboElite you are configuring. Make sure the addresses are outside the range the DHCP server might assign and also on a subnet that is reachable by your computer (where Drobo Dashboard is running). 3. After saving your settings, safely shut down your DroboPro/DroboElite (Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Shutdown) and disconnect the USB cable. 4. Connect one end of the supplied Ethernet cable to the iSCSI (Ethernet) port on the back of your DroboPro/DroboElite. Then connect the other end to the router or switch. 5. Plug in the power cord and flip the power toggle switch on the rear left side of DroboPro/DroboElite. 6. After the boot sequence, Drobo Dashboard should recognize your Drobo storage device and you can begin the volume setup and formatting process.
Configuration 3: Direct-connect to a computer:

If you are going to connect your DroboPro or DroboElite directly to your computer's Ethernet interface, make sure your computers network port is set up to use DHCP to automatically assign an IP Address. If your computer has only one Ethernet connection and you are already using it to connect to a network, then you will need to purchase and install a standard (1 Gbps) Ethernet add-on card that is compatible with your computer. A regular network card

is required, as Data Robotics does not support iSCSI-specific cards. (Please see Configuration 1 or 2 as an alternative that does not require you to purchase and install an additional Ethernet card.) Setup: 1. Connect one end of the supplied Ethernet cable to the iSCSI (Ethernet) port on the back of your DroboPro/DroboElite. Then connect the other end to an available network port on your computer. 2. Plug the supplied power cord into the power port on the back of your DroboPro/DroboElite. 3. Plug in the power cord and flip the power toggle switch on the rear left side of the Drobo storage device. 4. After the boot sequence, Drobo Dashboard should recognize your DroboPro/DroboElite and you can begin the volume setup and formatting process.
Creating a volume

You can use Volume Management to create and manage multiple volumes on your DroboPro or DroboElite, each with its own size and supported file format. After setting up your volumes, each will show up uniquely, rather than as a single volume. On DroboElite, you can also set a CHAP password for any volumes you choose to protect from unwanted access. See page 15 for more information. By default, DroboElite automatically creates one 16TB unformatted volume. DroboPro creates one or more 2 TB volumes. You can delete these volumes as necessary.
Note: In Windows, volumes are sometimes referred to as logical drives or partitions. On a Mac, volumes are simply volumes. The term Logical Unit Number (LUN) is also used to refer to volumes.

To access Volume Management, go to the Advanced Controls -> Tools tab of Drobo Dashboard and click Volume Management. On DroboPro, you can create up to 16 volumes. With DroboElite, you can create up to 255 volumes. The maximum size of each volume is determined by the operating system and file system format you choose. (See page 14 for further detail.) DroboPro and DroboElite support volumes up to 16TB in size. This gives you great flexibility in adapting your Drobo storage device to your unique environment. Drobos BeyondRAID technology enables you to create volumes, independent of the actual total physical

capacity (called thin provisioning). Then, space is allocated to the volumes only as you accumulate data on them. After you set up or edit your volumes, the main page in Drobo Dashboard will list all valid volumes. Note that on DroboElite, you must use the iSCSI connection to format your volumes. If you are still connected using USB, shut down your DroboElite (Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Shutdown), disconnect the USB cable and connect to one of the iSCSI ports using one of the enclosed Ethernet cables. After initial configuration, you can perform all functions via the iSCSI connection.
Picking a file system and volume size

Depending on your computers operating system, you have several choices for the file system format and size of the file system on your DroboPro/DroboElite. You should pick the combination that works best for your expected usage of your Drobo storage device. For most customers, we recommend choosing the largest volume size available for the selected file system. The size of the volume you select is independent of the amount of actual storage in your DroboPro/DroboElite because of the advanced storage virtualization technology.

If you are using the VMFS or EXT3 file system formats on your DroboElite, you will need to use the formatting facility in VMware or your Linux distribution. You should set the IP address(es) and create volumes using Drobo Dashboard on a Mac or Windows PC.

For DroboElite customers only, when creating a volume for VMFS, select the Multi Host option in the volume setup screen. For EXT3, pick the None option. After you configure your DroboElite, you will then enter the iSCSI connection information into the iSCSI initiator and format the volumes. You can identify the volumes you created in ESX and Linux by looking at the target node id. The target node id shows up in the form of: iqn.2005-06.com.datarobotics:droboelite.tdb123456789.id1 The second to last element is your DroboElites serial number (in italics) and the final element is the volumes id number (in bold). In Drobo Dashboard, the id number for each volume is shown in the far left column in the volume list within Volume Management window. The full target node name can be seen in Drobo Dashboards main window and Volume Management window by hovering your mouse over the volume name. See page 18 for an example. Username and Password Note for VMware and Linux customers (DroboElite only)

If you set a CHAP password for any volume(s) during the initial setup, the assigned default username is DroboElite for any volumes on your DroboElite. Setting a username for a volume does not appear in Drobo Dashboard even if you use it to set CHAP password(s).

DroboPro/DroboElite Lights
One of your Drobo storage devices many benefits is a series of lights that tell you everything you need to know, without your having to launch any application software on your computer. Remember, both DroboPro and DroboElite are designed to actively monitor and protect your data at all times. DroboPro/DroboElite will automatically take any necessary actions whenever possible and display the following lights:

Drive Lights

Green: No action is required. All drives are healthy. Solid Yellow: Add a drive or replace the current drive with a larger drive soon. DroboElite is running out of disk space. Blinking Yellow and Green: Do not remove these drives or power down. DroboElite is working to protect your data. Solid Red: Add a drive or replace the current drive with a larger drive immediately. DroboElite is critically low on space. Blinking Red: Replace this drive immediately. This drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

Power Light

Green: The power is on and DroboElite is ready. Yellow: DroboElite is in standby mode. Red: DroboElite has overheated. Disconnect the data cable and then the power cable. Let it cool down and then restart. Blinking Green: Data is actively being transferred between your computer and DroboElite. Blue: Displays the percentage of your DroboElite that is full, in 10% increments.

IV. Using Drobo Dashboard with your DroboPro/DroboElite

Drobo Dashboard is used to set up, configure, and interact with your Drobo storage device.

Drobo Dashboard basics

Drobo Dashboard is the recommended companion application that keeps you informed of your DroboPro/DroboElites status and allows you to customize your device to best fit your storage needs.
Note: To install Drobo Dashboard, you will need to have administrative rights on your computer. The main page

Open Drobo Dashboard and you will see the main page. This page gives you a quick overview of your DroboPro/DroboElites status and storage usage. If you have more than one Drobo storage device, you can switch between the Drobo devices by clicking on the appropriate tab at the top of the window. DroboPro

DroboElite

The pie chart shows you how much storage space is being used and how much free space remains. By placing your mouse over the pie chart, you will see a summary of the health of your DroboPro/DroboElite. This panel also allows you to protect your DroboElite (only) by setting a Username and Password. If you have already set this up, you can login to your DroboElite by filling in the fields. In the Volume panel, you can see information on the volumes on your DroboPro/DroboElite and also choose to mount or unmount any of the volumes (DroboElite only). Simply check or uncheck the Mount boxes as desired. Are you curious about how your disks are being used? Click How is my storage being used? in the lower left corner. The capacity breakdown bar will appear showing you how DroboPro/DroboElite is using storage. Available for data: Total protected space on your DroboPro or DroboElite that is available for you to store data Reserved for expansion: Unusable capacity reserved for future use when one hard drive is larger than the others. This space will become available when you add a larger capacity hard drive or replace a smaller drive with a larger one.

Tip: You can determine actual disk space usage by opening Drobo Dashboard. The blue capacity lights on the front of your DroboPro/DroboElite provide an approximation in 10 percent increments.

You can explore different hard drive combinations using the Capacity Calculator web tool at www.drobo.com/calculator. This will show you what happens when you replace a drive or add a new one to your DroboPro or DroboElite.
Advanced Controls: Data tab

The Data tab in Advanced Controls gives you in-depth details on the status of your DroboElite. You should go to this screen if DroboElite is in the process of protecting your data and you would like to know when it will finish. The progress will be shown in the Data Protection section.

Advanced Controls: Tools tab

The Tools tab gives you access to controls that allow you to customize your DroboPro/DroboElite. In this window you can safely shut down or reset your DroboPro/DroboElite, manage volumes, or change specific settings in your Drobo storage device. (Note: Clicking the Reset button erases all data on your DroboPro or DroboElite.) Additionally, this page displays useful information, including the units serial number and current software and firmware versions, and provides an easy way to check for updates of Drobo Dashboard and your units firmware.

Additional features

Drobo Dashboard provides the following additional functionality to your DroboPro/DroboElite, enabling you to make custom backups and receive email notifications.
DroboCopy

DroboCopy provides an easy way to back up files to or from your DroboPro/DroboElite. Select the folder you want to back up, the location you want to back it up to, the time you want it to run, and you are all set. Your selected backup folder and all the items within it will be copied the first time DroboCopy runs. Subsequently, only new and updated files will be copied to the destination folder. (Updated files will replace older files.)

To start using DroboCopy on a PC, launch Drobo Dashboard and rightclick the Drobo Dashboard icon (pie chart) in the System Tray and select DroboCopy Settings On a Mac, launch Drobo Dashboard and go to the Drobo Dashboard menu and select DroboCopy Settings In the DroboCopy window click New DroboCopy and pick the folders you would like to use for your DroboCopy.
Note: Drobo Dashboard must be running for the scheduled backups to work.

Alerts

Drobo Dashboard will display specific DroboPro/DroboElite alerts locally on your computer. For individual alert settings, the desired alert level can be set in Drobo Dashboard within the Advanced Controls > Tools tab. It can be found in the Drobo to send alert pane in the upper right corner. Drobo Dashboard can also send email alerts based on a selected alert level for all Drobo storage devices attached to your computer (including any DroboShares on your network). To access this option on a PC, launch Drobo Dashboard and right-click the System Tray Drobo Dashboard icon and select Email Settings. On a Mac, launch Drobo Dashboard and go to the Drobo Dashboard menu and select Email Settings
Keeping Drobo Dashboard up-to-date

Drobo Dashboard is included on the Drobo Resource CD that comes with your product. After it is installed, you will be notified when a new version is available (unless you uncheck Check for updates automatically). Go to www.drobo.com/support/ for more information.

Advanced Drobo Dashboard

The Drobo Dashboard application allows you to easily check the status, manage volumes, change settings, etc., on your DroboPro or DroboElite. See page 17 for an overview of Drobo Dashboard. Drobo Dashboard also makes it easy to back up files to or from your DroboElite and set alerts.
Volume Management

You can create, delete and rename your volumes using Drobo Dashboards Volume Management window. DroboElite customers can also password-protect individual volumes by clicking Enable in the CHAP column next to the volume. To access Volume Management, go to the Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Volume Management. For more information on creating and managing volumes, review the section entitled Creating a volume on page 13 and the documentation included in Drobo Dashboards Help. Note: The screenshot below is for DroboElite. DroboPro customers will not see the Enable buttons.

Setting a CHAP Password (DroboElite only)

By default, the volumes on the DroboElite can be accessed without the administrative username and password. If you want to password protect a volume, set a CHAP password for it in the Volume Management window. VMware and Linux customers: please see page 15 for further information.

Settings General Tab

After you click Settings, you will see either two tabs (DroboPro) or three tabs (DroboElite) you can use to configure your Drobo device to suit your individual needs.

Dual disk redundancy

Dual disk redundancy is a setting that will protect your stored data against two simultaneous drive failures. When this additional safeguard is enabled, the amount of usable space is reduced in order to provide this protection. To use dual disk protection, you are required to have at least three hard disks in your DroboPro/DroboElite and sufficient free disk space. By default, this setting is disabled. To enable it, go to the Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Settings. Dual disk protection can be enabled or disabled at anytime as long as you meet the minimum requirements mentioned above. Note that changing this setting will require time to relayout your data if you already have data stored on the drives. The amount of time required depends upon the amount of data stored.
Disk drive spin down

The default setting for this feature is 15 minutes on DroboPro and Never on DroboElite. Spinning down the drives helps save electricity and can prolong the life of the drives. Note that when the drives have

spun down, it will take your Drobo storage device a few moments to spin the drives back up when accessed. If you would like to change this setting, go to the Advanced Controls -> Tools tab and click the Settings button. You can change the spin down time by using the slider.
Settings iSCSI Tab

DroboPro

The iSCSI window allows you to configure your iSCSI connection on your DroboPro. Automatically configure (default) allows Drobo Dashboard to make the connection for you when you are directly connecting the DroboPro to your computer. If you want or need to assign a specific IP address for your iSCSI connection, use the manual setting. (You can use the FireWire, USB or iSCSI connection to set the IP address.) In the Advanced Controls > Tools tab, click Settings. Then click the iSCSI tab in the Settings window and Manually assign an IP Address.
Note: If you are connecting multiple DroboPros to one computer, manual configuration is required.

DroboElite

The iSCSI window allows you to configure your iSCSI connection(s) on your DroboElite. The iSCSI ports are automatically configured (default) as shown in the screenshot above for a DroboElite. If you want or need to assign a specific IP address for your iSCSI connection(s), simply replace the default information accordingly. If you are connecting your DroboElite to a switch or router, first connect the DroboElite via USB to set the IP address(es). Then, switch to the iSCSI connection.
Note: If you are connecting multiple DroboPros and/or DroboElites to one computer, setting unique IP addresses is required.

Settings Admin Tab (DroboElite Only)

The Admin window allows you to set the username and password to administer the DroboElite. This username and password prevent unauthorized people from changing settings and managing volumes on your DroboElite. When set, the all options within Advanced Controls section of Drobo Dashboard will not be accessible without these credentials. Note that this must be set for each DroboElite, if desired.

V. Tips and Troubleshooting

This section addresses some common questions about your DroboPro or DroboElite. We also offer free access to our knowledge base, support FAQs and Best Practices. Please visit www.drobo.com/support for the latest technical information. Q. How do I download the latest versions of Drobo Dashboard and DroboPro/DroboElite Firmware? A. To download the latest versions of software, click the Check For Updates button in the Advanced Controls > Tools tab. You can check for and download the latest firmware and Drobo Dashboard versions on our website at: www.drobo.com/support/updates.
Note: You must have administrator privileges on your computer in order to install the upgrade for Drobo Dashboard.

Q. How do I add capacity to my DroboPro/DroboElite? A. Either add a standard 3.5 SATA hard drive to an empty Data Bay, or remove the smallest capacity drive and replace with a larger capacity drive. Its okay to do this while DroboPro/DroboElite is running; you do not need to shut down your Drobo storage device. If you are adding multiple drives, insert them one at a time and let DroboPro/DroboElite relayout (blinking green and yellow lights) after each one, before adding the next. Q. What should I use the USB interface for on DroboElite? A. The USB port is used for administrative purposes only on DroboElite, primarily network configuration. You cannot format volumes nor transfer data using USB. It can also be used to modify settings if your iSCSI connection is not working correctly. (On DroboPro, you can use this connection for any purpose, including formatting volumes and transferring data.) Q. Why does my computer show that I have more capacity than it actually does? A. What is reported by the operating system will vary depending on the volume size you chose to format your DroboPro/DroboElite. Generally speaking, your operating system will show the volume size you created, regardless of actual physical capacity. It will, however, show the correct used space. When you add enough hard drive capacity to exceed the volume size you chose during setup, simply

create a new volume using Drobo Dashboards Volume Management. Q. How can I tell how much capacity my DroboPro/DroboElite has left? A. The main page of Drobo Dashboard provides the most accurate information. See page 17. You can get an approximate idea by simply checking the blue capacity gauge on the front of your DroboPro/DroboElite. Each blue light represents 10% of available capacity that contains protected data. If you observe three blue lights, you have approximately 70% still available for data. Q. Will my computer tell me how much space is used on DroboPro/DroboElite? A. Yes, actual space used is represented accurately by your OS. The volume size, however, will show as the size you created, independent of the actual drives in your DroboPro/DroboElite. Q. How can I wipe all the data from my drives and reset my DroboPro/DroboElite? A. WARNING: THIS PROCEDURE WILL CLEAR ALL THE DATA STORED ON DROBOPRO AND DROBOELITE. There are two ways to reset your DroboPro or DroboElite. First, in Advance Controls > Tools tab, click the Reset button. The on-screen instructions will walk you through the process. The second way is to first shut down the DroboPro/DroboElite. Next, locate the small unmarked reset pinhole on the back of DroboElite (opposite side from the power button). Insert a straightened paper clip through the unmarked hole. You should be able to feel the switch depress. While still depressing the switch, power on the DroboPro/DroboElite and hold the switch depressed until the power indicator starts blinking green. This will take approximately 30 seconds. Q. Do I need to format new drives that I add to DroboPro/DroboElite? A. When you add a drive to an empty Drive Bay or upsize an existing drive after the initial formatting, you will get immediate access to any additional capacity. You will not have to format each drive added to your Drobo storage device.

Q. What happens if I initially formatted my DroboPro or DroboElite as a 2TB volume and then add more than 2TB of protected capacity? A. If you format DroboPro/DroboElite for a certain volume size (e.g., 2TB volume during initial format) and then add more storage capacity than can be contained in that volume (for example, you add one or more 1.5TB drives), you will need to use Volume Management to create a new volume. If you want to maintain the data all on a single volume rather than two volumes, youll need to migrate the data to the new larger volume. If you have sufficient capacity, you can do this on your DroboPro/DroboElite using Volume Management. Otherwise, you will have to copy all your data to another storage device, reformat your DroboPro/DroboElite and then copy the data back.
Note: Windows XP has a limitation of 2TB as the maximum volume size. In this case, you will have to create a new volume for any additional storage added beyond the 2TB volume size.

Q. Will the magnets that hold the face plate on endanger my data? A. No. In fact, the magnets inside your hard drive(s) are much stronger and closer to the hard drive media than the face plate. Q. How do I back-up data on DroboPro/DroboElite? A. Data on DroboPro/DroboElite is intrinsically backed-up, but of course that doesnt protect against fire, theft or accidentally deleted files. You can duplicate data onto any other media through your computer or attach a second Drobo storage device to your computer, duplicate the data, and move it to a different secure location. For more information, please visit our Best Practices site at www.drobo.com/support/best_practices. Q. Is there a foolproof way to protect my data on the DroboPro/DroboElite? A. If the DroboPro/DroboElite is the only source of your data, then that would be considered your primary storage. The only way to fully protect your data is to maintain a true backup. (A backup implies a secondary source of your data.) DroboPro and DroboElite both have a dual disk redundancy feature which protects against two simultaneous drive failures. See page 23.)

Many customers use another Drobo product, to back up the data on their DroboPro/DroboElite so that they have two copies of their data. It all depends on how important this data is to you and/or how easy it would be to rebuild or recreate this data. When most companies back up their data, they store the second (or even a third) copy of the data at a different location. This way, they are prepared to be back in business fairly quickly should something happen to the office or data center. Please visit our Best Practices site at www.drobo.com/support/best_practices for more information. Q. Why dont I see more capacity after I delete a large number of files? A. You will. Please be patient. DroboPro and DroboElite take this opportunity to optimize data layout while reclaiming newly created empty space. However, some utilities (such as Norton Utilities) have an option to protect your data from accidental deletion. Be sure to disable that feature in order to delete data from DroboPro/DroboElite. Also, you might have to delete the files from the Recycle Bin or Trash Can to truly remove the files from your DroboPro or DroboElite. Q. Why is there data on DroboPro/DroboElite before I copy data to it? A. Your operating system and the DroboPro/DroboElite firmware both place a small amount of formatting information on the drives prior to any data transfer. Q. Why does my DroboPro/DroboElite seem extremely slow when its almost full? A. Instead of refusing to copy files when its capacity is nearly full (over 95%), DroboPro and DroboElite instead enter a slow down mode to alert you to check the blue capacity gauge. If all ten blue lights are lit, its time to add capacity. Q. My drive bay lights are flashing green and yellow. What does this mean? A. Your DroboPro/DroboElite is actively working to protect your data. You can still use your DroboPro/DroboElite normally, but do not power the unit off when the lights are flashing, and do not add or remove drives until the lights stop flashing. Q. Why am I not receiving any email alerts? A. Contact your email provider to double-check the information that you entered when you set up email alerts. Additionally there are

What does the blinking yellow light on the back of my DroboPro/DroboElite mean: A. When your DroboPro or DroboElite is shutting down, the small light between the power plug and the power switch briefly flashes. You normally only see this from the back of the unit. This light will always flash during shutdown. Q. Do DroboPro and DroboElite use RAID? A. No, the patent-pending technology (called BeyondRAID) within DroboElite is not RAID and was developed specifically to perform data management and configuration tasks automatically so that you dont have to. DroboElite does utilize advanced storage concepts such as virtualization, but it is not a derivative of RAID. See page 1 for more information on BeyondRAID. Q. Should I periodically defragment the drives in DroboPro/DroboElite? A. No, this type of optimization is performed automatically. Q. What happens to my data if there is a power outage? A. Both DroboPro and DroboElite manage interruptions to power automatically and have internal rechargeable batteries that allow data being written during an outage to complete. However, various file systems handle unexpected power losses differently, so it is recommended that you run a file system utility if you do experience an unexpected power loss at any time. As with all electronic equipment, we recommend connecting your DroboPro/DroboElite to a surge protector or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed for electronics. Q: Can I extend the warranty on my DroboPro/DroboElite? A. Yes, you can purchase additional hardware and phone support by purchasing DroboCare. Q. How do I get support for DroboPro/DroboElite? A. If you did not register your DroboPro or DroboElite during setup, first go to www.drobo.com/registration to register your DroboPro or DroboElite. Then go to www.drobo.com/support for details on how to contact support. This site provides support FAQs, a Knowledge Base and Best Practices to help you get the most from your DroboPro/DroboElite. Q. How can I shut down DroboPro/DroboElite safely for a prolonged period? A. Click the Shutdown button from the Advanced Controls -> Tools tab of Drobo Dashboard or by clicking the power button on the rear of the DroboPro/DroboElite. The front and rear power lights will turn off once the DroboElite has safely shut down. You can now safely disconnect power and store DroboPro/DroboElite for a prolonged period. Q. Can I place my DroboPro/DroboElite on its side? A. Do not place your DroboPro or DroboElite on its side during normal operation. If you place your DroboPro or DroboElite on its side, there is a chance the drives will disconnect. For optimal performance and protection of your data we recommend that DroboPro/DroboElite remain in its normal horizontal position during normal operation. Q. Can I use DroboShare with DroboPro or DroboElite? A. No, DroboShare only works with 1st and 2nd Generation Drobo. Its not compatible with DroboPro or DroboElite.

Vielen Dank dafr, dass Sie einem weiteren Drobo-Speichergert ein Zuhause bieten! Wir von Data Robotics, Inc. arbeiten seit 2004 daran, das Schtzen, Speichern und Verwalten Ihrer digitalen Inhalte zu einer wahrhaftig mhelosen Aufgabe zu machen.
Warum Drobo?

Die Drobo-Produktfamilie (Drobo, DroboPro and DroboElite) bietet mhelose, sichere und erweiterbare Speicherung. Es gibt viele verschiedene Mglichkeiten, digitale Inhalte zu speichern und zu schtzen. Aber Drobo ist das einzige vollautomatische Speichergert, das viele Datenverwaltungsaufgaben ohne Benutzereingriff bernimmt. Hier sehen Sie, was Sie erwartet:
Vollautomatische Verwaltung und Schutz vor Datenverlust

Drobo konfiguriert sich zum Schutz vor Datenverlust selbst. Das brauchen Sie nicht zu tun. Bei Ausfall eines Laufwerks bleiben Ihre Daten weiterhin geschtzt (und alle Laufwerke fallen irgendwann einmal aus). Drobo erkennt beschdigte Daten und stellt sicher, dass Sie nur auf nicht beschdigte Daten zugreifen. Keine Standzeiten, um Kapazitt hinzuzufgen. Sie knnen ein Laufwerk einfach in einen leeren Datenschacht einsetzen oder eine Festplatte geringerer Kapazitt durch eine Festplatte hherer Kapazitt ersetzen. Die Kapazitt, der Hersteller oder die Geschwindigkeit spielen dabei keine Rolle. Nach der Installation eines Laufwerks in einem leeren Schacht steht die neue Kapazitt sofort zur Verfgung und wird geschtzt. Die Anzeigeleuchten am Datenschacht von Drobo zeigen Ihnen alles an, was Sie wissen mchten.
Unendliche Erweiterung

Das Erhhen der Kapazitt ist so einfach wie das Einsetzen von Tintenpatronen in einen Drucker. Sie knnen beliebige 3,5"-SATA-Festplatten verwenden, ohne sich Gedanken um den Hersteller, das Modell oder die Kapazitt der vorhandenen Laufwerke im Drobo machen zu mssen. Immer den erforderlichen Speicherplatz Ersetzen Sie dazu einfach das Laufwerk mit der geringsten Kapazitt durch eines

hherer Kapazitt. Es ist keine Datenmigration oder erneute Konfigurierung erforderlich.

-Speichertechnologie

Wofr steht BeyondRAID? Die BeyondRAID-Technologie geht ber die herkmmliche RAID-Technologie hinaus und macht Entscheidungen zwischen Striping und Spiegeln oder ber Erweiterbarkeit, Gre und Reihenfolge der Laufwerke berflssig. Die BeyondRAID-Technologie ist die nchste Generation der Speichertechnologie, bei der sich Sicherheit, Zuverlssigkeit, Effizienz und natrlich Benutzerfreundlichkeit vereinen. BeyondRAID kann ohne nderungen der Infrastruktur bernommen werden. Sie knnen Ihr aktuelles Dateisystem und Betriebssystem beibehalten, wodurch die Reibungsverluste vermieden werden, die normalerweise beim bergang zu einer neuen Technologie auftreten. Standardmige RAID-Stufen sind voll von Kompromissen. Wnschen Sie Striping oder Spiegelung? Ein RAID-System mit zwei oder vier Festplatten? BeyondRAID ist in der Lage, diese Probleme zu lsen, da es auf einer modernen Virtualisierungsplattform aufsetzt. Wenn Sie bereits wissen, wie RAID 0, 1, 5 oder 6 funktionieren, verstehen Sie auch die Grundlagen von BeyondRAID, da diese Technologie auf denselben grundlegenden Algorithmen aufbaut. II. Erste Schritte

Drei einfache Schritte
Um Ihren DroboPro oder DroboElite einzurichten, mssen Sie wie folgt vorgehen: 1. Drobo Dashboard installieren Starten Sie im Anschluss an die Installation Drobo Dashboard und lassen Sie die Anwendung whrend des gesamten Setup geffnet. 2. Laufwerke einsetzen Verwenden Sie beliebige 3,5''-SATALaufwerke. Beginnen Sie mit mindestens zwei Laufwerken, um Ihre wertvollen Daten zu schtzen. Wenn Sie die zweifache Datentrgerredundanz verwenden mchten, beginnen Sie mit mindestens drei Laufwerken. (Alle Daten auf den Laufwerken werden gelscht.) 3. Kabel anschlieen Schlieen Sie DroboPro/DroboElite zuerst an Ihren Computer und dann an die Stromversorgung an. Verwenden Sie den USB-Anschluss whrend der Erstkonfiguration, um die IP-Adresse(n) festzulegen, Kennwrter einzurichten (DroboElite), Volumes zu erstellen usw. Beim Einrichten eines DroboElite formatieren und bertragen Sie die Daten ber eine iSCSI-Verbindung. (Hinweis: Bei DroboElite ist eine Datenbertragung ber USB nicht mglich.) Drobo Dashboard erkennt Ihren DroboPro/DroboElite automatisch. Anschlieend befolgen Sie die in Drobo Dashboard angezeigten Anweisungen. Sie sind nun einen groen Schritt weiter, was den Schutz Ihrer wertvollen Daten angeht. Weitere Einzelheiten zu diesen Schritten finden Sie in diesem Benutzerhandbuch und im entsprechenden Abschnitt.

Auswhlen von Festplatten

Alle Drobo-Speicherprodukte, einschlielich DroboPro und DroboElite, unterscheiden sich von herkmmlichen Speichergerten. Mit DroboPro und DroboElite ist das zuknftige Erweitern von Speicherkapazitt uerst einfach. Sie mssen lediglich weitere Laufwerke einsetzen oder vorhandene Laufwerke durch grere ersetzen. Sie knnen also den fr Sie derzeit erforderlichen Speicher kaufen und diesen zu einem

spteren Zeitpunkt auf einfache Weise erweitern. Im Laufe der Zeit sind so Einsparungen von mehreren Hundert Euro mglich. Ihr Drobo-Speichergert erlaubt den Einbau von Festplatten beliebiger Hersteller, Kapazitt oder Drehgeschwindigkeit. Fr Drobo sind standardmige interne 3,5''-SATA1- oder SATA2-Festplatten (auch als SATA/150 oder SATA/300 bezeichnet) zulssig. SSD und ltere IDE- oder ATA-Laufwerke knnen nicht verwendet werden.
Warnung! Beim Hinzufgen von Festplatten zum DroboPro/DroboElite werden alle bereits vorhandenen Daten auf diesen Festplatten gelscht. Auswhlen von Kapazitt

Die Anzahl und die Kapazitt der Laufwerke bestimmt, wie viel verwendbaren geschtzten Speicher DroboPro bzw. DroboElite bietet. Sie mssen dabei nicht raten verwenden Sie einfach den Kapazittsrechner (www.drobo.com/calculator), ein webbasiertes Tool, mit dem Sie die verwendbare geschtzte Kapazitt jeder ausgewhlten Kombination von Festplatten bestimmen knnen. Um selbst die ungefhre Kapazitt zu berechnen, lassen Sie die grte Festplatte weg und zhlen dann die Kapazitt der verbleibenden Festplatten zusammen. Hinweis zur Laufwerkskapazitt

Vor einigen Jahren begannen Computer- und Festplattenhersteller, verschiedene Systeme zur Angabe der Festplattenkapazitt zu verwenden. Das Ergebnis ist, dass Ihrem Computer nicht die gesamte Festplattenkapazitt zur Verfgung steht. Beispielsweise hat ein 750-GB-Laufwerk eine Kapazitt von ungefhr 700 GB. Diese Diskrepanz wird nicht von Drobo-Speichergerten verursacht.

Aktualisieren des Produkts

Whrend der Erstinstallation werden Sie in Drobo Dashboard gefragt, ob automatisch nach Updates gesucht werden soll. Sie sollten unbedingt die Option Ja whlen, um eine optimale Leistung Ihres DroboPro bzw. DroboElite sicherzustellen. Diese Funktion ermglicht, dass sowohl Drobo Dashboard als auch die Produkt-Firmware auf dem aktuellen Stand gehalten wird. Sie werden dann benachrichtigt, sobald eine neuere Version verfgbar ist. Unter www.drobo.com/support/updates knnen Sie nach aktuellen Versionen suchen.

Bewhrte Verfahren
Ihnen steht eine Reihe von Mglichkeiten zur Verfgung, Ihre wertvollen Daten zu schtzen. Die Verwendung eines DroboPro- bzw. DroboElite-Speicherprodukts ist dabei offensichtlich ein groer Schritt. Jedoch gibt es weitere Manahmen, mit denen Sie fr eine noch grere Sicherheit Ihrer Daten sorgen knnen. III. Einrichten
Installieren von Drobo Dashboard
Bevor Sie DroboPro oder DroboElite einrichten, mssen Sie Drobo Dashboard auf Ihrem Computer installieren. Mit Drobo Dashboard wird Ihr Drobo-Speichergert formatiert, wenn Sie es an einen Windowsoder Mac OS X-Computer anschlieen. Auerdem wird auf lteren Windows-Betriebssystemen, z. B. Windows XP und Windows Server 2003, ggf. der Microsoft iSCSI-Initiator installiert. Nach dem Einrichten knnen Sie Drobo Dashboard verwenden, um Ihre Gerte und Volumes zu berwachen und zu verwalten. Drobo Dashboard ist auf der DroboRessourcen-CD gespeichert. Sie knnen Drobo Dashboard auch ber www.drobo.com/support/updates herunterladen. Legen Sie die im Lieferumfang von DroboPro/DroboElite enthaltene Drobo-Ressourcen-CD in Ihren Computer ein. Whlen Sie im auf dem Bildschirm angezeigten Men die Option Installieren aus. Nach der Installation von Drobo Dashboard wird die Anwendung automatisch gestartet. Warten auf Anschluss wird solange angezeigt, bis Sie die Hardware-Einrichtung abgeschlossen haben.

Einsetzen von Laufwerken in DroboPro/DroboElite

Sobald Sie die Anzahl der Laufwerke und die Kapazitten fr die Installation ausgewhlt haben, mssen Sie nur noch die Abdeckung entfernen (abziehen) und dann die Laufwerke in die Datenschchte von Drobo schieben. Dabei ist es unerheblich, welches Laufwerk in welchen Datenschacht eingesetzt wird. Hinweis: Alle bereits auf diesen Laufwerken vorhandenen Daten werden gelscht. Stellen Sie sicher, dass Sie nach dem Auspacken keine der offen liegenden Laufwerksplatinen berhren.

Richten Sie als Erstes die Laufwerksanschlsse so aus, dass sie zur linken Seite des DroboPro/DroboElite zeigen. Die obere, silberfarbene Seite des Laufwerks sollte nach rechts zeigen. ffnen Sie die Laufwerkssperre, indem Sie sie nach unten drcken, und schieben Sie das Laufwerk in den Datenschacht, bis der Anschluss am Ende des Gerts eingerastet ist. Wenn die Anschlsse richtig sitzen, schnappt die Laufwerkssperre hinter dem Laufwerk ein, sodass dieses an seinem Platz gesichert ist.
Warnung! Stellen Sie den DroboPro bzw. DroboElite whrend des normalen Betriebs nicht auf eine seiner Seiten. Falls doch, besteht das Risiko, dass die Laufwerksverbindung getrennt wird. Um eine optimale Leistung und einen optimalen Schutz Ihrer Daten zu erreichen, wird empfohlen, die standardmige horizontale Position von DroboPro/DroboElite nicht zu verndern.

Anschlieen von DroboPro an Ihren Computer

DroboPro kann auf unterschiedliche Weise an Ihren Computer angeschlossen werden. Sie sollten die schnellste verfgbare Verbindungsmethode auswhlen. Es kann nur jeweils ein Anschlusstyp verwendet werden. Fr den Anschluss stehen USB 2.0, Firewire 800 und iSCSI zur Verfgung (Reihenfolge von langsamster zu schnellster Methode).

USB 2.0

Bei DroboPro haben Sie die Mglichkeit, USB 2.0 zum Anschlieen an Ihren Computer zu verwenden. USB 2.0 ist zwar nicht so schnell wie FireWire 800 oder iSCSI, ist jedoch auf jedem in den letzten Jahren hergestellten Computer zu finden.
FireWire 800

FireWire 800 sorgt fr eine herausragende Leistung bei DroboPro. Verfgt Ihr Computer ber keinen Firewire 800-Port, wenden Sie sich an den Computerhersteller, um eine kompatible Add-On-Karte zu erhalten. (Stellen Sie sicher, dass Sie eine Karte auswhlen, die den Computer und das Betriebssystem voll untersttzt, da nicht alle FireWire-Karten eine optimale Leistung bieten.) Verfgt Ihr Computer lediglich ber einen FireWire 400-Anschluss, mssen Sie ein sogenanntes Firewire 800-zuFireWire 400-Kabel kaufen.
Hinweis: Windows-basierte Computer erreichen mit standardmigen Microsoft-FireWire-Treibern nicht ihre optimale Leistung. Besuchen Sie die Knowledge Base auf der Support-Website www.drobo.com/support, um Einzelheiten zum Optimieren der Leistung fr FireWire unter Windows zu erfahren. Verwenden Sie als Schlsselwrter fr die Suche FireWire performance (dt. FireWire-Leistung). iSCSI

iSCSI verwendet ein standardmiges Ethernet-Kabel, um die fr DroboPro optimale Leistung zu erzielen. Sie sollten eine direkte Verbindung zwischen dem iSCSI-Anschluss von DroboPro und dem Computer herstellen, wenn Ihr Computer mehr als zwei Ethernet-Ports hat. (Wenn kein zweiter Ethernet-Port vorhanden ist und Sie iSCSI verwenden mchten, mssen Sie eine standardmige GigabitEthernet-Add-On-Karte einbauen, die mit Ihrem Computer kompatibel ist.) Ein Ethernet-Port sollte zum Anschlieen des Computers an Ihr lokales Netzwerk verwendet werden, der andere zum Anschlieen des iSCSI-Ports von DroboPro. Der direkte Anschluss gewhrleistet eine optimale Leistung. Sie knnen DroboPro auch via iSCSI durch einen Switch anschlieen. Dabei ist ein Port des Switch an Ihren Computer angeschlossen und der andere Port an den iSCSI-Anschluss von DroboPro. Sie mssen eine IP-Adresse manuell in DroboPro festlegen (siehe Konfigurationen auf Seite 10). Beachten Sie, dass sich abhngig vom Datenverkehr, der ber den Switch fliet, ein derartiger Anschluss auf die Leistung auswirken kann.

Anschlieen von DroboElite an Ihren Computer

Ihr DroboElite bietet einen USB 2.0- Anschluss und zwei iSCSIAnschlsse. Der USB-Anschluss wird nur fr administrative Zwecke eingesetzt, einschlielich der erstmaligen Einrichtung. Sie mssen die iSCSI-Anschlsse fr Volume-Formatierungen und Datenbertragungen verwenden. Die Verwendung beider iSCSI-Anschlsse ermglicht Ihnen, aus Ihrem DroboElite die maximale Leistung herauszuholen. Um Ihren DroboElite einzurichten, mssen Sie ihn zuerst ber den USB-Anschluss an Ihren Computer anschlieen. Nach dem Konfigurieren des oder der iSCSI-Ports fr Ihr Netzwerk fahren Sie DroboElite sicher herunter, trennen Sie das USB-Kabel und schlieen Sie Ihre iSCSI-Kabel an. Sie mssen die iSCSI-Schnittstelle zum Formatieren der Volumes auf Ihrem DroboElite verwenden. ber den USB-Anschluss ist keine Formatierung mglich. Informationen zu der fr Ihre Umgebung passenden Einrichtung finden Sie unter Konfigurationen auf Seite 10.

Stromanschluss
Nachdem Sie DroboPro/DroboElite an Ihr Netzwerk angeschlossen haben, stecken Sie das Stromkabel in die Rckseite des Gerts und in eine stromfhrende Steckdose. Drcken Sie dann den Betriebsschalter auf der Rckseite von DroboPro/DroboElite. Wenn das Gert das erste Mal eingeschaltet wird, leuchten alle Laufwerks- und Kapazittsanzeigen auf.
Hinweis: Wie bei allen elektrischen Gerten sollten Sie auch beim Anschluss Ihres DroboPro/DroboElite auf berspannungsschutz oder eine unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung (USV) achten.

Konfigurationen iSCSI
Es gibt drei grundlegende Konfigurationen, die Sie bei der iSCSIEinrichtung von DroboPro bzw. DroboElite verwenden knnen: Konfiguration 1: Anschluss des DroboPro/DroboElite an einen Switch, der NICHT direkt an ein Netzwerk angeschlossen ist Konfiguration 2: Anschluss des DroboPro/DroboElite an einen Switch, der an ein Netzwerk angeschlossen ist Konfiguration 3: Direkt an einen Computer angeschlossen Folgendes gilt fr alle Konfigurationen: Drobo Dashboard ist fr die iSCSI-Einrichtung erforderlich. Bitte installieren Sie Drobo Dashboard von der CD, die im Lieferumfang Ihres DroboPro/DroboElite enthalten ist, oder von www.drobo.com/support/updates. Um die beste bertragungsleistung mit Ihrem iSCSI-Anschluss zu erzielen, mssen Sie eine Gigabit-Ethernet-Netzwerkkarte (10/100/1000) verwenden. Eine Fast Ethernet-Netzwerkkarte (10/100) fhrt zu einer schlechten iSCSI-bertragungsleistung. DroboPro verfgt ber einen iSCSI-Port, DroboElite ber zwei. Da DroboElite Jumbo Frames untersttzt, stellen Sie sicher, dass Ihre Gigabit-Ethernet-Karte das ndern der MTU-Einstellung untersttzt. Auf DroboElite knnen Sie auf die MTU-Einstellung in Drobo Dashboard zugreifen: Erweiterte Steuerungen -> Extras -> Einstellungen -> iSCSI Mit einem Standard-Ethernet-Kabel erhalten Sie bei Ihrem DroboPro/DroboElite die beste iSCSI-Leistung. Eines ist im Lieferumfang Ihres DroboPro und zwei im originalen DroboElitePaket enthalten. Vergewissern Sie sich, dass Ihre Firewall eingehende und ausgehende Netzwerkverbindungen fr die Drobo DashboardAnwendung zulsst (iSCSI verwendet den Port 3260). Auf Computern unter Windows XP 64-Bit und Windows Server 2003 64-Bit sollten .NET Framework 2.0 (oder hher) installiert sein, um DroboPro/DroboElite anzuschlieen. Beim Anschlieen ber Ethernet ist ein iSCSI-Initiator erforderlich. Auf Windows-Computern verwenden wir den iSCSI-Initiator von Microsoft, der in Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 und hher enthalten ist. (Wenn Sie ltere Versionen ausfhren, installiert Drobo Dashboard den Microsoft iSCSIInitiator.) Fr Macs stellen wir unseren eigenen iSCSI-Initiator

bereit. Dieser wird vom Drobo Dashboard-Installer installiert. Wenn Ihr Computer unter Linux luft, finden Sie weitere Informationen auf unserer Website unter www.drobo.com/linux. ESX-Benutzer knnen den iSCSI-Initiator von VMware verwenden. Weitere Informationen zu Linux und ESX finden Sie auf der Website des Data Robotics-Support unter www.drobo.com/support. Wenn Ihr Computer unter Windows Vista luft, muss SP1 (oder hher) installiert sein. Andernfalls kann Drobo Dashboard Ihren DroboPro/DroboElite nicht erkennen.
Konfiguration 1: Anschluss des DroboPro/DroboElite an einen Switch, der NICHT direkt an ein Netzwerk angeschlossen ist:

Wenn Sie einen 1-Gbps-Switch haben, knnen Sie DroboPro bzw. DroboElite und Ihren Computer an denselben Switch anschlieen. Sie knnen mehrere DroboPros bzw. DroboElites an denselben Switch anschlieen, vorausgesetzt, die Drobo-Speichergerte und Ihr Computer haben je eine eindeutige statische IP-Adresse (siehe unten). Sie mssen dem/den iSCSI-Port(s) bei dieser Konfiguration eine IP-Adresse zuweisen. Verwenden Sie den USB-Anschluss zum Konfigurieren der Ports. Beachten Sie, dass sich abhngig vom Datenverkehr, der ber den Switch fliet, ein derartiger Anschluss auf die Leistung auswirken kann. Einrichtung: 1. Nachdem DroboPro bzw. DroboElite mithilfe des USBAnschlusses erfolgreich angeschlossen wurde (einschlielich der erfolgreichen Erkennung durch Drobo Dashboard), klicken Sie auf Erweiterte Steuerungen -> Extras -> Einstellungen -> iSCSI. 2. Whlen Sie eine eindeutige IP-Adresse fr jeden konfigurierten iSCSI-Anschluss und DroboPro/DroboElite. Legen Sie alle anderen Konfigurationseinstellungen fest. 3. Fahren Sie nach dem Speichern Ihrer Einstellungen Ihren DroboPro/DroboElite sicher herunter (Erweiterte Steuerungen > Extras -> Herunterfahren) und trennen Sie das USB-Kabel.

4. Schlieen Sie ein Ende des mitgelieferten Ethernet-Kabels an den iSCSI-Port (Ethernet) an der Rckseite Ihres DroboPro/DroboElite an. Schlieen Sie das andere Ende an den Switch an. Wiederholen Sie fr DroboElite diese Schritte bei Bedarf fr den zweiten iSCSI-Port. 5. Stecken Sie das Stromkabel ein und bettigen Sie den Netzschalter an der linken Seite von DroboPro/DroboElite. 6. Nach der Startsequenz sollte Drobo Dashboard Ihre DroboSpeichergerte erkennen. Dann knnen Sie mit der VolumeEinrichtung und dem Formatierungsprozess beginnen.
Konfiguration 2: Anschluss des DroboPro/DroboElite an einen Switch, der an ein Netzwerk angeschlossen ist:

Sie mssen dem/den iSCSI-Port(s) bei dieser Konfiguration eine IP-Adresse zuweisen. Verwenden Sie den USB-Anschluss zum Konfigurieren der Ports. Beachten Sie, dass DroboPro/DroboElite bei dieser Konfiguration die Netzwerkleistung beeintrchtigen kann. Auerdem kann auch der Netzwerkverkehr die Leistung von DroboPro/DroboElite beeintrchtigen. Einrichtung: 1. Nachdem DroboPro bzw. DroboElite mithilfe des USBAnschlusses erfolgreich angeschlossen wurde (einschlielich der erfolgreichen Erkennung durch Drobo Dashboard), klicken Sie auf Erweiterte Steuerungen -> Extras -> Einstellungen -> iSCSI. 2. Whlen Sie eine eindeutige IP-Adresse fr jeden konfigurierten iSCSI-Anschluss und DroboPro/DroboElite. Stellen Sie dabei sicher, dass sich die Adressen auerhalb des Bereichs befinden, den der DHCP-Server mglicherweise zuweist, und innerhalb eines Subnetzes liegen, das von Ihrem Computer (auf dem Drobo Dashboard ausgefhrt wird) erreicht werden kann. 3. Fahren Sie nach dem Speichern Ihrer Einstellungen Ihren DroboPro/DroboElite sicher herunter (Erweiterte Steuerungen > Extras -> Herunterfahren) und trennen Sie das USB-Kabel. 4. Schlieen Sie ein Ende des mitgelieferten Ethernet-Kabels an den iSCSI-Port (Ethernet) an der Rckseite Ihres DroboPro/DroboElite an. Schlieen Sie das andere Ende an den Router oder Switch an.

5. Stecken Sie das Stromkabel ein und bettigen Sie den Netzschalter an der linken Seite von DroboPro/DroboElite. 6. Nach der Startsequenz sollte Drobo Dashboard Ihr DroboSpeichergert erkennen. Dann knnen Sie mit der VolumeEinrichtung und dem Formatierungsprozess beginnen.
Konfiguration 3: Direkt an einen Computer angeschlossen:

Wenn Sie Ihren DroboPro bzw. DroboElite direkt an die Ethernet-Schnittstelle Ihres Computers anschlieen, vergewissern Sie sich, dass der Netzwerkport Ihres Computers fr die Verwendung von DHCP und fr die automatische Zuweisung einer IP-Adresse eingerichtet ist. Wenn Ihr Computer nur einen Ethernetanschluss hat und dieser bereits von der Netzwerkverbindung belegt ist, mssen Sie eine zustzliche Standard-Ethernetkarte (1 Gbps) kaufen und installieren, die mit Ihrem Computer kompatibel ist. Eine herkmmliche Netzwerkkarte ist erforderlich, da Data Robotics iSCSI-spezifische Karten nicht untersttzt. (Bitte betrachten Sie die Konfiguration 1 oder 2 als Alternativen, bei denen Sie keine zustzliche Ethernetkarte kaufen und installieren mssen.) Einrichtung: 1. Schlieen Sie ein Ende des mitgelieferten Ethernet-Kabels an den iSCSI-Port (Ethernet) an der Rckseite Ihres DroboPro/DroboElite an. Schlieen Sie dann das andere Ende an einen verfgbaren Netzwerkport an Ihrem Computer an. 2. Stecken Sie das mitgelieferte Stromversorgungskabel in den Stromversorgungsanschluss an der Rckseite Ihres DroboPro/DroboElite. 3. Stecken Sie das Stromkabel ein und schalten Sie den Betriebsschalter an der linken Seite des Drobo-Speichergerts ein. 4. Nach der Startsequenz sollte Drobo Dashboard Ihre DroboPros/DroboElites erkennen. Dann knnen Sie mit der Volume-Einrichtung und dem Formatierungsprozess beginnen.
Erstellen eines Volumes

Sie knnen die Volume-Verwaltung verwenden, um mehrere Volumes jedes mit eigener Gre und eigenem untersttztem Dateiformat auf Ihrem DroboPro bzw. DroboElite zu erstellen und zu verwalten. Nach dem Einrichten Ihrer Volumes wird jedes als eindeutiges Volume angezeigt und nicht alle zusammen als einzelnes Volume. Auf DroboElite

knnen Sie fr beliebige Volumes, die Sie vor unerlaubtem Zugriff schtzen mchten, auch ein CHAP-Kennwort festlegen. Weitere Informationen finden Sie auf Seite 16. DroboElite erstellt standardmig ein unformatiertes Volume mit 16 TB. DroboPro erstellt ein oder mehrere 2-TB-Volumes. Sie knnen diese Volumes nach Bedarf lschen.
Hinweis: Unter Windows werden Volumes auch als logische Laufwerke oder Partitionen bezeichnet. Unter Mac-Betriebssystemen wird ebenfalls der Begriff Volumes verwendet. Der Begriff LUN (Logical Unit Number, logische Gertenummer) wird ebenfalls verwendet, um Volumes zu bezeichnen.

Um auf die Volume-Verwaltung zuzugreifen, whlen Sie Erweiterte Steuerungen und dann die Registerkarte Extras von Drobo Dashboard, und klicken Sie dann auf Volume-Verwaltung. Bei DroboPro knnen Sie bis zu 16 Volumes erstellen. Bei DroboElite knnen Sie bis zu 255 Volumes erstellen. Die maximale Gre jedes Volumes wird vom Betriebssystem und ausgewhlten Dateisystemformat bestimmt. (Weitere Einzelheiten finden Sie auf Seite 14.) DroboPro und DroboElite untersttzt Volumes bis zu einer Gre von 16 TB. Auf diese Weise erhalten Sie beim Anpassen Ihres Drobo-Speichergerts an Ihre Umgebung grere Flexibilitt. Die BeyondRAID-Technologie von Drobo ermglicht es Ihnen, unabhngig von der tatschlich vorhandenen physischen Gesamtkapazitt Volumes zu erstellen. Den Volumes wird erst dann Speicherplatz zugewiesen, wenn Sie auf ihnen Daten sammeln. Nach dem Einrichten oder Bearbeiten Ihrer Volumes werden auf der Hauptseite von Drobo Dashboard alle gltigen Volumes aufgefhrt. Bei DroboElite mssen Sie den iSCSI-Anschluss zum Formatieren der Volumes verwenden. Wenn Sie noch ber USB verbunden sind, fahren Sie DroboElite herunter (Erweiterte Steuerungen -> Extras -> Herunterfahren), trennen Sie das USB-Kabel und stellen Sie mithilfe eines der mitgelieferten Ethernet-Kabel eine Verbindung zu einem der iSCSI-Ports her. Nach der Erstkonfiguration knnen Sie alle Funktionen ber den iSCSI-Anschluss durchfhren.
Auswhlen eines Dateisystems und der Volume-Gre

Abhngig vom Betriebssystem Ihres Computers haben Sie mehrere Auswahlmglichkeiten fr das Dateisystemformat und die Gre des Dateisystems auf Ihrem DroboPro/DroboElite. Wenn Sie die Dateisystemformate VMFS oder EXT3 auf Ihrem DroboElite verwenden, mssen Sie das Formatierungsprogramm in VMware oder Ihrer Linux-Distribution verwenden. Sie sollten unter Windows oder Mac IP-Adressen mit Drobo Dashboard einrichten und Volumes erstellen. DroboElite-Kunden: Whlen Sie beim Erstellen eines Volumes fr VMFS die Option Mehrere Hosts im Einrichtungsbildschirm fr Volumes. Whlen Sie fr EXT3 die Option Keine. ergreift automatisch alle notwendigen Manahmen und zeigt den Status durch folgende Anzeigen an:
Laufwerksanzeigen Grn: Keine Aktion erforderlich. Alle Laufwerke sind betriebsbereit. Gelb: Fgen Sie ein Laufwerk hinzu oder ersetzen Sie das aktuelle Laufwerk bald durch ein greres Laufwerk. DroboElite steht bald nicht mehr ausreichend Speicherplatz zur Verfgung. Gelb und grn blinkend: Diese Laufwerke nicht entfernen, Stromversorgung nicht trennen. DroboElite fhrt einen Vorgang zum Schutz vor Datenverlust durch. Rot: Fgen Sie ein Laufwerk hinzu oder ersetzen Sie das aktuelle Laufwerk sofort durch ein greres Laufwerk. Speicherplatz in DroboElite ist fast vollstndig belegt. Rot blinkend: Ersetzen Sie dieses Laufwerk sofort. Laufwerk ist ausgefallen und muss ersetzt werden. Betriebsanzeige Grn: Stromversorgung ist eingeschaltet und DroboElite ist betriebsbereit. Gelb: DroboElite befindet sich im Standby-Modus. Rot: DroboElite ist berhitzt. Trennen Sie das Datenkabel und dann das Stromversorgungskabel. Lassen Sie den Drobo abkhlen und starten Sie dann neu. Grn blinkend: Daten werden aktiv zwischen Computer und DroboElite bertragen. Drobo Dashboard ist die empfohlene Begleitanwendung, die Sie ber den DroboPro/DroboElite-Status informiert und Ihnen ermglicht, Ihr Gert an Ihre Speicheranforderungen anzupassen.

Das Kreisdiagramm gibt an, wie viel Speicherplatz belegt und wie viel freier Speicherplatz noch verfgbar ist. Durch Platzieren der Maus ber dem Kreisdiagramm wird eine Zusammenfassung des DroboPro/DroboElite-Zustands angezeigt. Dieser Bereich ermglicht es Ihnen auerdem, (nur) Ihre DroboElites durch Festlegen eines Benutzernamens und Kennworts zu schtzen. Wenn Sie diese bereits eingerichtet haben, knnen Sie sich bei Ihrem DroboElite anmelden, indem Sie die Felder ausfllen. Im Bereich Volume knnen Sie die Informationen zu den Volumes in Ihrem DroboPro/DroboElite sehen und auswhlen, beliebige der Volumes zu mounten oder zu unmounten (nur DroboElite). Markieren Sie die Kontrollkstchen zum Mounten entsprechend. Mchten Sie wissen, in welchem Umfang die einzelnen Laufwerke verwendet werden? Klicken Sie in der unteren rechten Ecke auf Wie wird mein Speicher verwendet? Der Balken fr die Kapazittsaufgliederung wird angezeigt und stellt die Speicherbelegung von DroboPro/DroboElite dar. Fr Erweiterung reserviert: Nicht verwendbare Kapazitt, die zur spteren Verwendung reserviert ist, sollte eine Festplatte grer sein als die andere. Dieser Platz wird verfgbar, wenn Sie eine Festplatte hherer Kapazitt hinzufgen oder eine Festplatte geringerer durch eine Festplatte hherer Kapazitt ersetzen. Fr Schutz verwendet: Speicherkapazitt, die zum Schutz von Daten vor Laufwerksausfllen verwendet wird. Restkapazitt: Von DroboPro/DroboElite zur Verwaltung verwendete Kapazitt.
Tipp: Sie knnen die tatschliche Speicherplatznutzung bestimmen, indem Sie Drobo Dashboard ffnen. Die blauen Kapazittsanzeigen auf der Vorderseite Ihres DroboPro/DroboElite bieten einen Anhaltspunkt in Zehntelschritten.

Sie knnen verschiedene Festplattenkombinationen mit dem Kapazittsrechner (www.drobo.com/calculator) testen. Hier wird Ihnen gezeigt, was passiert, wenn Sie ein Laufwerk ersetzen oder Ihrem DroboPro bzw. DroboElite ein neues hinzufgen. DroboCopy

DroboCopy bietet eine einfache Mglichkeit an, Sicherungskopien Ihrer Dateien auf Ihrem DroboPro/DroboElite zu erstellen. Ethernet Whlen Sie den Ordner fr das Backup, den Speicherplatz fr die Sicherungskopien und den Zeitpunkt zum Ausfhren des Sicherungsvorgangs aus. Und schon haben Sie alles erledigt. Ihr ausgewhlter Backupordner und alle darin enthaltenen Elemente

werden beim ersten Ausfhren von DroboCopy kopiert. Danach werden nur neue oder aktualisierte Dateien in den Zielordner kopiert. (Aktualisierte Dateien ersetzen ltere Dateien.)

Um mit der Verwendung von DroboCopy auf einem PC zu beginnen, starten Sie Drobo Dashboard und rechtsklicken Sie auf das Drobo Dashboard-Symbol (Kreisdiagramm) in der Taskleiste und whlen Sie DroboCopy-Einstellungen.... Bei einem Mac: Starten Sie Drobo Dashboard, gehen Sie zum Men von Drobo Dashboard und whlen Sie DroboCopy-Einstellungen.... Klicken Sie im DroboCopy-Fenster auf Neue DroboCopy und whlen Sie die Ordner aus, die Sie fr Ihre DroboCopy verwenden mchten.
Hinweis: Drobo Dashboard muss aktiv sein, damit die geplanten Sicherungen durchgefhrt werden knnen.

Warnungen

Drobo Dashboard zeigt bestimmte DroboPro/DroboElite-Warnungen lokal auf Ihrem Computer an. Fr die einzelnen Warneinstellungen kann die gewnschte Warnstufe in Drobo Dashboard ber Erweiterte Steuerungen und die Registerkarte Extras festgelegt werden. Sie finden es oben rechts im Bereich Drobo soll Warnung senden.... Drobo Dashboard kann ebenfalls E-Mail-Warnungen senden, basierend auf einer Warnstufe, die fr alle an den Computer angeschlossenen Drobo-Speichergerten (einschlielich DroboShare im Netzwerk) ausgewhlt ist. Erweitertes Drobo Dashboard

Die Drobo Dashboard-Anwendung ermglicht es Ihnen, auf Ihrem DroboPro bzw. DroboElite den Status zu berprfen, Volumes zu verwalten, Einstellungen zu ndern usw. Eine bersicht fr Drobo Dashboard finden Sie auf Seite 18. Mithilfe von Drobo Dashboard ist zudem das Backup von Dateien auf und von Ihrem DroboElite und das Festlegen von Warnungen ein einfacher Vorgang.
Volume-Verwaltung

Sie knnen Ihre Volumes ber das Fenster Volume-Verwaltung von Drobo Dashboard erstellen, lschen und umbenennen. DroboEliteKunden knnen auerdem einzelne Volumes mit Kennwortschutz versehen, indem in der Spalte CHAP neben dem Volume die Aktivierungsfunktion ausgewhlt wird. Um auf die Volume-Verwaltung zuzugreifen, whlen Sie Erweiterte Steuerungen -> Extras -> VolumeVerwaltung. Weitere Informationen zum Erstellen und Verwalten von Volumes finden Sie im Abschnitt Erstellen eines Volumes auf Seite 13 und in der Dokumentation, die in der Drobo Dashboard-Hilfe enthalten ist. Festlegen eines CHAP-Kennworts (nur DroboElite)

Auf die Volumes des DroboElite kann standardmig auch ohne den administrativen Benutzernamen und das Kennwort zugegriffen werden. Wenn Sie ein Volume mit Kennwortschutz versehen mchten, legen Sie fr das Volume ein CHAP-Kennwort im Fenster Volume-Verwaltung fest. VMware- und Linux-Kunden: Weitere Informationen finden Sie auf Seite 16.

Einstellungen

Nach dem Klicken auf Einstellungen werden entweder zwei Registerkarten (DroboPro) oder drei Registerkarten (DroboElite) fr die individuelle Konfiguration Ihres Drobo-Gerts angezeigt.

Zweifache Datentrgerredundanz

Die zweifache Datentrgerredundanz ist eine Einstellung, mit der Ihre gespeicherten Daten bei zwei gleichzeitigen Laufwerksausfllen geschtzt werden. Wenn dieser zustzliche Schutz aktiviert ist, wird die Menge des verwendbaren Speicherplatzes reduziert, um diese Funktion bereitstellen zu knnen. Um den zweifachen Datentrgerschutz zu verwenden, mssen mindestens drei Festplatten in Ihrem DroboPro/DroboElite sowie ausreichend freier Speicherplatz vorhanden sein. Diese Einstellung ist standardmig deaktiviert. Um sie zu aktivieren, whlen Sie Erweiterte Steuerungen -> Extras -> Einstellungen. Der zweifache Datentrgerschutz kann jederzeit aktiviert oder deaktiviert werden, sofern die oben genannten Mindestanforderungen erfllt sind. Durch ndern dieser Einstellungen ist es erforderlich, Ihre Daten neu anzuordnen, sofern bereits Daten auf den Laufwerken gespeichert sind. Die hierfr bentigte Zeit ist von der Menge der gespeicherten Daten abhngig.
Herunterfahren der Laufwerke

Die Standardeinstellung fr diese Funktion ist 15 Minuten bei DroboPro und Nie bei DroboElite. Durch Herunterfahren der Laufwerke wird Energie gespart und die Lebensdauer der Laufwerke verlngert. Beachten Sie, dass das Hochfahren Ihres Drobo-Speichergerts einen Moment dauert, wenn die Laufwerke heruntergefahren waren. Sie mssen beim Zugriff erst wieder hochgefahren werden. Wenn Sie diese Einstellung ndern mchten, whlen Sie Erweiterte Steuerungen und klicken auf der Registerkarte Extras im Abschnitt DroboEliteEinstellungen auf die Schaltflche Einstellungen. Sie knnen die Zeitschwelle zum Herunterfahren mithilfe des Schiebereglers ndern.

DroboPro

Das iSCSI-Fenster ermglicht die Konfiguration der iSCSI-Verbindung auf Ihrem DroboPro. Durch Auswahl der Option Automatisch konfigurieren (Standard) kann Drobo Dashboard die Verbindung fr Sie herstellen, wenn Ihr Computer direkt an DroboPro angeschlossen wird. Wenn Sie eine bestimmte IP-Adresse fr die iSCSI-Verbindung zuweisen mchten (oder mssen), verwenden Sie die manuelle Einstellung. (Sie knnen den FireWire-, USB- oder iSCSI-Anschluss zum Festlegen der IP-Adresse verwenden.) Whlen Sie Erweiterte Steuerungen und klicken Sie auf der Registerkarte Extras auf Einstellungen. Klicken Sie dann im Fenster Einstellungen auf die iSCSI-Registerkarte und whlen Sie IP-Adresse manuell zuweisen.
Hinweis: Wenn Sie mehrere DroboPros an einen Computer anschlieen, ist eine manuelle Konfiguration erforderlich.

DroboElite

Das iSCSI-Fenster ermglicht die Konfiguration der iSCSI-Verbindung(en) auf Ihrem DroboElite. Die iSCSI-Ports werden wie im Screenshot oben dargestellt fr DroboElite automatisch konfiguriert (Standard). Wenn Sie eine bestimmte IP-Adresse fr die iSCSI-Anschlsse zuweisen mchten (oder mssen), ersetzen Sie die Standardangaben entsprechend. Wenn Sie Ihren DroboElite an einen Switch oder Router anschlieen, verbinden Sie Ihren DroboElite zunchst ber USB oder FireWire, um die IP-Adresse(n) festzulegen. Wechseln Sie dann zur iSCSI-Verbindung.
Hinweis: Wenn Sie mehrere DroboPros und/oder DroboElites an einen Computer anschlieen, mssen die IP-Adressen manuell festgelegt werden.

Das Fenster Admin ermglicht es Ihnen, den Benutzernamen und das Kennwort fr die Administration von DroboElite festzulegen. Dieser Benutzername und das Kennwort schtzen vor unerlaubtem Zugriff und verhindern, dass auf Ihrem DroboElite Einstellungen gendert oder Volumes verwaltet werden. Wenn Sie festgelegt sind, stehen ohne diese Anmeldeinformationen smtliche Optionen im Bereich Erweiterte Steuerungen von Drobo Dashboard nicht mehr zur Verfgung. F. Wie fge ich meinem DroboPro/DroboElite Kapazitt hinzu? A. Fgen Sie entweder einem leeren Datenschacht eine standardmige 3,5-Zoll-SATA-Festplatte hinzu oder entfernen Sie die Festplatte mit der geringsten Kapazitt und ersetzen Sie sie durch eine Festplatte hherer Kapazitt. Dies kann erfolgen, whrend DroboPro/DroboElite ausgefhrt wird. Sie mssen Ihr Drobo-Speichergert hierfr nicht herunterfahren. Wenn Sie mehrere Laufwerke hinzufgen, setzen Sie sie nacheinander ein und lassen Sie DroboPro/DroboElite anschlieend eine Neuanordnung durchfhren (grne und gelbe Anzeigen). Fgen Sie erst dann das nchste Laufwerk hinzu. F. Wozu verwende ich die USB-Schnittstelle bei DroboElite? A. Der USB-Port wird bei DroboElite ausschlielich fr administrative Zwecke verwendet, hauptschlich bei der Netzwerkkonfiguration. ber USB knnen weder Volumes formatiert noch Daten bertragen werden. Der USB-Port kann ebenfalls zum ndern der Einstellungen verwendet werden, wenn die iSCSI-Verbindung nicht ordnungsgem funktioniert. (Bei DroboPro knnen Sie diese Verbindung fr jegliche Zwecke verwenden, einschlielich der Formatierung von Volumes und der bertragung von Daten.)

F. Warum zeigt mein Computer mehr Kapazitt an als eigentlich vorhanden ist? A. Die Angaben des Betriebssystems hngen von der Volume-Gre ab, mit der Sie Ihren DroboPro/DroboElite formatieren. Allgemein ausgedrckt: Ihr Betriebssystem zeigt die von Ihnen erstellte Volume-Gre an, unabhngig von der tatschlichen physischen Kapazitt. Es zeigt den belegten Speicherplatz jedoch korrekt an. Zeigt der Computer mir, wie viel Speicherplatz auf dem DroboPro/DroboElite belegt ist? A. Ja, der tatschlich belegte Speicherplatz wird vom Betriebssystem genau wiedergegeben. Die Volume-Gre entspricht jedoch der von Ihnen erstellten Gre, und zwar unabhngig von den tatschlichen Festplatten in Ihrem DroboPro/DroboElite. F. Wie kann ich alle Daten von meinen Festplatten lschen und meinen DroboPro/DroboElite zurcksetzen? A. WARNUNG: DURCH DIESES VERFAHREN WERDEN ALLE DATEN GELSCHT, DIE AUF DEM DROBOPRO UND DROBOELITE GESPEICHERT SIND. Es gibt zwei Mglichkeiten, Ihren DroboPro oder DroboElite zurckzusetzen. Die eine Mglichkeit besteht darin, unter Erweiterte Steuerungen auf der Registerkarte Extras auf die Schaltflche Zurcksetzen zu klicken. Die Anweisungen auf dem Bildschirm fhren Sie durch das Verfahren. Die zweite Mglichkeit besteht darin, zunchst den DroboPro/DroboElite herunterzufahren. Suchen Sie als Nchstes die kleine, nicht markierte Schalterbohrung zum Zurcksetzen an der Rckseite von DroboElite (gegenber vom Betriebsschalter). Fhren Sie

eine geradegebogene Broklammer durch die nicht markierte Bohrung. Sie sollte dabei spren, dass ein Schalter bettigt wird. Schalten Sie den DroboPro/DroboElite bei gedrcktem Schalter ein und lassen Sie den Schalter so lange gedrckt, bis die Betriebsanzeige beginnt, grn zu blinken. Dies dauert ungefhr 30 Sekunden. F. Muss ich neue Laufwerke, die ich DroboPro/DroboElite hinzufge, formatieren? A. Wenn Sie ein Laufwerk in einen leeren Datenschacht einsetzen oder ein vorhandenes Laufwerk geringerer Kapazitt nach der initialen Formatierung durch eines hherer Kapazitt ersetzen, erhalten Sie direkt zustzliche Kapazitt. Dabei mssen Sie nicht jedes Laufwerk formatieren, das Sie Ihr Drobo-Speichergert hinzufgen. F. Was passiert, wenn ich meinen DroboPro oder DroboElite initial als Volume mit 2 TB formatiert habe und dann mehr als 2 TB geschtzte Kapazitt hinzufge? A. Wenn Sie DroboPro/DroboElite auf eine bestimmte Volume-Gre formatieren (z. B. 2 TB bei der initialen Formatierung) und dann mehr Speicherkapazitt hinzufgen als in dem Volume enthalten sein kann (z. B. durch Hinzufgen von zwei oder mehr 1,5-TB-Laufwerken), mssen Sie das Fenster Volume-Verwaltung verwenden, um ein zweites Volume fr diesen neuen Speicherplatz zu erstellen. Wenn alle Daten weiterhin lieber auf einem einzelnen statt auf vielen Volumes gespeichert werden sollen, mssen Sie die Daten auf das neue grere Volume migrieren. Wenn Sie ber ausreichend Kapazitt verfgen, knnen Sie dies ber die Volume-Verwaltung auf Ihrem DroboPro/DroboElite durchfhren. Andernfalls mssen Sie alle Daten auf ein anderes Speichergert kopieren, Ihren DroboPro/DroboElite neu formatieren und dann die Daten zurck kopieren.
Hinweis: Windows XP ist auf eine maximale Volume-Gre von 2 TB beschrnkt. In diesem Fall mssen Sie fr zustzlichen Speicherplatz ber die Volume-Gre von 2 TB hinaus ein neues Volume erstellen.

F. Gefhrden die Magnete der Abdeckung meine Daten? A. Nein. Die Magnete in den Festplatten sind sogar viel strker und nher an den Festplattenmedien als die Abdeckung.

F. Wie sichere ich Daten auf meinem DroboPro/DroboElite? A. Bedingt durch das Funktionsprinzip legt DroboPro/DroboElite bereits selbst ein Backup an. Dies schtzt die Daten allerdings nicht vor Feuer, Diebstahl oder versehentlichem Lschen. Sie knnen Daten ber Ihren Computer auf andere Medien duplizieren oder ein zweites Drobo-Speichergert anschlieen, die Daten duplizieren und an einen anderen sicheren Ort bringen. Weitere Informationen zu diesem wichtigen Thema finden Sie unter Best Practices (Bewhrte Verfahren) auf der Website www.drobo.com/support/best_practices. F. Gibt es eine narrensichere Mglichkeit, meine Daten auf dem DroboPro/DroboElite zu schtzen? A. Wenn der DroboPro/DroboElite Ihre einzige Datenquelle ist, wird er als Ihr primrer Speicherort angesehen. Die einzige Mglichkeit, Ihre Daten vollstndig zu schtzen, besteht im Erstellen eines echten Backups. (Ein Backup impliziert eine sekundre Datenquelle.) (DroboPro und DroboElite haben eine Funktion, die zweifache Datentrgerredundanz, durch die Ihre Daten bei zwei gleichzeitigen Laufwerksausfllen geschtzt sind. Siehe Seite 24.) Viele Kunden verwenden fr das Backup ihrer Daten auf dem ersten DroboPro/DroboElite einen weiteren Drobo, sodass ihre Daten immer doppelt vorhanden sind. Es kommt darauf an, wie wichtig diese Daten sind und/oder wie leicht es wre, diese Daten neu zu erstellen. Wenn die meisten Unternehmen ein Backup ihrer Daten erstellen, bewahren sie die zweite (oder sogar dritte) Datenkopie an einem anderen Ort auf. Auf diese Weise sind sie in der Lage, den normalen Geschftsbetrieb schnell wieder fortzusetzen, sollte etwas im Bro oder Datencenter passieren. DroboPro und DroboElite nutzen diese Gelegenheit, das Datenlayout zu optimieren und neu geschaffenen leeren Speicherplatz wieder zu verwenden. Einige Dienstprogramme (z. B. I. Introduction
Merci d'avoir choisi notre systme de stockage Drobo ! Chez Data Robotics, Inc., nous travaillons depuis 2004 pour simplifier vraiment la protection, le stockage et la gestion de votre contenu numrique.
Pourquoi choisir Drobo ?

La gamme de produits Drobo (Drobo, DroboPro et DroboElite) offre un systme de stockage simple, scuris et extensible. Plusieurs mthodes permettent de stocker et de protger le contenu numrique, mais Drobo est le seul systme de stockage entirement automatique qui simplifie les nombreuses tches de gestion. Voici ce que vous pouvez en attendre :
Gestion et protection des donnes entirement automatises

Drobo se configure automatiquement pour la protection de donnes, vous navez donc pas le faire. Vos donnes sont encore en scurit quand un disque tombe en panne (et tous les disques finissent par tomber en panne). Drobo identifie les donnes endommages et s'assure que vous naccdiez qu des donnes intactes. Pas de temps mort pour ajouter de la capacit. Ajoutez simplement un disque une baie de donnes vide, ou remplacez un disque plus petit par un plus grand indpendamment de la capacit, de la vitesse, ou du fabricant. Une fois le disque install dans une baie vide, sa capacit est immdiatement disponible et protge. Les voyants de baie de donnes de Drobo indiquent tout ce que vous devez savoir !
Extension infinie

La mise niveau de la capacit est aussi simple que l'ajout de l'encre une imprimante. Panachez n'importe quels disques durs 3,5" (SATA) ; aucun souci d'adaptation, de modle ou de capacit des disques existants de Drobo. Augmentez la capacit indfiniment : remplacez seulement le plus petit disque de Drobo par un disque de plus grande capacit. Aucune migration de donnes ni reconfiguration nest requise.

Que signifie BeyondRAID ? Dpasser le RAID traditionnel signifie en finir avec les choix entre l'entrelacement et la mise en miroir, les restrictions sur l'extensibilit, la taille et l'ordre des disques. La technologie BeyondRAID est la prochaine gnration de stockage qui associe la scurit, la fiabilit, l'extensibilit, l'efficacit et bien sr la convivialit. BeyondRAID peut tre adopt sans changement d'infrastructure, permettant ainsi de conserver votre systme de fichiers et votre systme d'exploitation actuels. Ce qui permet d'liminer les cots de transition associs gnralement au transfert vers une nouvelle plateforme technologique. Les niveaux RAID standard sont pleins de compromis. Voulez-vous l'entrelacement ou la mise en miroir ? Jeu de deux disques ou de quatre disques RAID ? BeyondRAID est en mesure de rsoudre ces problmes car il est bas sur une plate-forme de virtualisation avance. Qui est Data Robotics, Inc. ?

Contrairement aux technologies obsoltes ayant merg il y a une vingtaine d'annes et aux produits actuels sources de frustrations, Drobo est une gamme de produits suivant l'volution du march, qui associe les notions avances de virtualisation de stockage et de cyberntique pour supprimer toutes les difficults de la gestion de donnes.

II. Mise en route

Trois tapes faciles
Pour configurer votre DroboPro ou DroboElite, vous devrez effectuer les oprations suivantes : 1. Installer Drobo Dashboard aprs l'installation, dmarrez Drobo Dashboard et laissez-le s'excuter pendant que vous terminez la configuration. 2. Insrer les disques utilisez des disques SATA 3.5". Dmarrez avec au moins deux disques pour protger vos donnes prcieuses. Si vous prvoyez d'utiliser la redondance deux disques, commencez avec au moins trois disques. (Toutes les donnes sur les disques seront effaces). 3. Brancher les cbles branchez DroboPro/DroboElite sur votre ordinateur puis branchez l'alimentation. Utilisez la connexion USB pour la configuration initiale pour dfinir la ou les adresses IP, les mots de passe (DroboElite), crer des volumes, etc. Si vous configurez un DroboElite, utilisez la connexion iSCSI pour le formatage et le transfert de donnes. (Remarque : vous ne pouvez pas transfrer de donnes en USB vers DroboElite). Drobo Dashboard dtecte automatiquement votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Ensuite, suivez les instructions affiches l'cran de Drobo Dashboard. Vous tes bien parti pour protger vos donnes prcieuses. Slection des disques durs

Tous les produits de stockage Drobo, y compris DroboPro et DroboElite, se distinguent des priphriques de stockage courants. DroboPro et DroboElite facilitent l'augmentation de la capacit de stockage l'avenir en insrant simplement d'autres disques ou en remplaant ceux existants par de plus grands. Ceci signifie que vous pouvez acheter le stockage dont vous avez besoin aujourd'hui puis l'agrandir facilement ultrieurement. Vous pouvez conomiser des centaines d'euros avec le temps.

Votre priphrique de stockage Drobo est insensible au fabricant, la capacit ou la vitesse du disque dur que vous installez. Il accepte des disques durs SATA1 ou SATA2 (aussi appels SATA/150 ou SATA/300) internes 3,5 po standard. Les disques SSD ou les anciens disques de type IDE ou ATA ne fonctionnent pas.
Avertissement ! Veuillez noter que lors de l'ajout de disques durs DroboPro/DroboElite, toute donne prexistante sur ces disques sera efface. Choix de la capacit

Le nombre et la capacit des disques dterminent la capacit protge utilisable procure par DroboPro ou DroboElite. Eliminez les incertitudes en utilisant Capacity Calculator (www.drobo.com/calculator), un outil en ligne qui dtermine la capacit protge utilisable, selon la combinaison des disques. Pour calculer la capacit approximative vous-mme, ne tenez pas compte du disque le plus grand puis additionnez la capacit des disques restants. Si vous prvoyez d'utiliser la redondance deux disques, ne tenez pas compte des deux plus grands disques. Par exemple (les disques les plus grands sont barrs) : Redondance un seul disque (par dfaut)

Une remarque propos de la capacit

Il y a quelques annes, les fabricants d'ordinateurs et de disques durs ont commenc utiliser diffrents systmes pour mesurer la capacit des disques durs. Le rsultat final est que ce nest pas la totalit de la capacit estime qui est disponible sur votre ordinateur. Par exemple, un disque de 750 Go possde environ une capacit valant 700 Go. Cet cart n'a rien voir avec la manire dont fonctionnent les priphriques de stockage Drobo.

Tenir votre produit jour

Lors de la configuration initiale, Drobo Dashboard demande si vous souhaitez rechercher automatiquement les mises jour. Il est fortement recommand de slectionner l'option "Oui" pour garantir une performance optimale de votre DroboPro ou DroboElite. Cette fonction permet de tenir Drobo Dashboard et le microprogramme de votre produit jour. Par la suite, vous recevrez une notification lorsqu'une nouvelle version sera disponible. Vous pouvez rechercher les versions les plus rcentes l'adresse www.drobo.com/support/updates.

Meilleures pratiques
Il existe un certain nombre de choses que vous pouvez faire pour protger vos donnes prcieuses. L'utilisation d'un systme de stockage DroboPro ou DroboElite est videmment une tape majeure. Mais il existe des mesures supplmentaires prendre pour renforcer la scurit de vos donnes. III. Configuration
Installation de Drobo Dashboard
Avant de configurer votre DroboPro ou DroboElite, vous devez installer Drobo Dashboard sur votre ordinateur. Vous utiliserez Drobo Dashboard pour formater votre priphrique de stockage Drobo si vous le connectez un ordinateur Windows ou Mac OS X. Il installera aussi l'initiateur iSCSI Microsoft sur les systmes d'exploitation Windows plus anciens, par exemple XP et Windows Server 2003, si cet initiateur n'est pas dj install. Aprs la configuration, vous pourrez utiliser Drobo Dashboard pour surveiller et grer votre ou vos priphriques ainsi que les volumes. Drobo Dashboard est compris sur le CD Ressources Drobo. Vous pouvez galement tlcharger Drobo Dashboard en visitant www.drobo.com/support/updates. Insrez le CD Ressources Drobo fourni avec DroboPro/DroboElite dans l'ordinateur. Sur le menu affich l'cran, cliquez sur Installer. Une fois Drobo Dashboard install, il dmarre automatiquement. Il affiche "Attente de connexion" jusqu' l'achvement de la configuration matrielle.

Insertion de disques dans DroboPro/DroboElite

Une fois que vous avez choisi le nombre de disques et les capacits installer, il ne vous reste plus qu' retirer la faade en tirant simplement dessus puis qu' faire glisser les disques dans les baies de donnes. Peu importe quel disque entre dans quelle baie de donnes. Vous devez noter que toute donne prexistante sur les disques sera efface. Veillez ne pas toucher des cartes de circuit nu du disque dur une fois le dballage termin.

Orientez d'abord les connecteurs de disque vers DroboElite et face au ct gauche de DroboPro/DroboElite. Le ct plaque mtallique argente du disque doit tre dirig vers la droite. Ouvrez le verrou du disque en appuyant dessus et faites glisser le disque dans la baie de donnes jusqu' ce que les connecteurs s'embotent l'arrire de l'appareil. Si les connecteurs sont logs correctement, le verrou du disque s'enclenche derrire le disque, en le fixant parfaitement.
Avertissement ! Ne placez pas votre DroboPro ou DroboElite sur le ct en fonctionnement normal. Cela pourrait entraner une dconnexion des disques. Pour une performance optimale et une protection de vos donnes, il est recommand que DroboPro/DroboElite reste en position horizontale normale.

Connecter DroboPro votre ordinateur

Plusieurs moyens permettent de connecter DroboPro votre ordinateur. Vous devez slectionner la connexion la plus rapide votre disposition. Veuillez noter qu'un seul type de connexion peut tre utilis la fois. Les connexions, indiques de la plus lente la plus rapide, sont USB 2.0, FireWire 800 et iSCSI.

USB 2.0

DroboPro permet d'utiliser USB 2.0 pour vous connecter l'ordinateur. Bien qu'il ne soit pas aussi rapide que FireWire 800 ou iSCSI, il est disponible sur chaque ordinateur fabriqu ces dernires annes.
FireWire 800

FireWire 800 donne d'excellents rsultats avec le DroboPro. Si aucun port FireWire 800 ne figure sur votre ordinateur, veuillez contacter votre fabricant d'ordinateur pour obtenir une carte d'extension compatible. (Assurez-vous de slectionner une carte totalement compatible avec votre ordinateur et systme d'exploitation car seules quelques cartes FireWire offrent une performance optimale.) Si votre ordinateur ne possde qu'un connecteur FireWire 400, vous devrez acheter un cble FireWire 800 vers FireWire 400.
Remarque : les ordinateurs sous Windows ne fonctionneront pas de faon optimale avec les pilotes Microsoft FireWire standard. iSCSI utilise un cble Ethernet standard pour vous faire profiter des meilleures performances possibles avec votre DroboPro. Il est recommand de connecter directement la connexion iSCSI de DroboPro votre ordinateur si ce dernier possde deux ou plusieurs ports Ethernet. (Si vous ne disposez pas d'un deuxime port Ethernet alors que vous souhaitez utiliser iSCSI, vous devrez installer une carte d'extension Ethernet gigabit standard compatible avec votre ordinateur.) Un port Ethernet devrait tre utilis pour connecter votre ordinateur au rseau local et lautre pour le connecter au port iSCSI de DroboPro. La connexion directe assure les meilleures performances. Vous pouvez galement connecter votre DroboPro par iSCSI au moyen d'un commutateur, o un seul port du commutateur est connect votre ordinateur et un autre port est reli la connexion iSCSI de DroboPro. Vous devrez dfinir manuellement une adresse IP sur le DroboPro (voir Configurations en page 10). Selon la quantit de trafic utilisant votre commutateur, ce type de connexion pourrait affecter les performances.

Connecter DroboElite votre ordinateur

Votre DroboElite dispose d'un connecteur USB 2.0 et de deux connecteurs iSCSI. Le connecteur USB s'utilise exclusivement pour l'administration, notamment la configuration initiale. Vous devez utiliser le ou les connecteurs iSCSI pour le formatage des volumes ou les transferts de donnes. L'utilisation des deux ports SCSI permet de tirer les meilleures performances de votre DroboElite. Pour configurer votre DroboElite, vous devrez d'abord connecter DroboElite votre ordinateur par le connecteur USB. Aprs configuration du ou des ports iSCSI pour votre rseau, arrtez en toute scurit DroboElite, dbranchez le cble USB, et branchez votre ou vos cbles iSCSI. Remarquez que vous devez utiliser l'interface iSCSI pour formater les volumes sur votre DroboElite. Vous ne pouvez pas formater par la connexion USB. Voir "Configurations" en page 10 pour la procdure de configuration correspondant votre environnement.

Brancher l'alimentation
Aprs avoir connect DroboPro/DroboElite votre rseau, branchez simplement le cordon d'alimentation l'arrire du priphrique et une source d'alimentation CA. Puis, appuyez sur le bouton marche-arrt l'arrire du DroboPro/DroboElite. Au premier allumage du priphrique, tous les voyants de disque et les voyants indicateurs de capacit sont allums.
Remarque : comme avec tout quipement lectronique, il est recommand de brancher votre DroboPro/DroboElite sur un parasurtenseur ou un onduleur, conu pour l'lectronique .

Configurations

iSCSI

Vous pouvez utiliser trois configurations iSCSI de base sur votre DroboPro ou DroboElite : Configuration 1 : DroboPro/DroboElite connect un commutateur qui n'est PAS directement connect un rseau Configuration 2 : DroboPro/DroboElite connect un commutateur connect un rseau Configuration 3 : Connexion directe un ordinateur Les rgles suivantes s'appliquent toutes les configurations : Drobo Dashboard est indispensable pour la configuration iSCSI. Installez Drobo Dashboard avec le CD livr avec votre DroboPro/DroboElite ou tlcharg sur www.drobo.com/support/updates. Pour obtenir les meilleures performances de votre connexion iSCSI, vous devriez utiliser une carte rseau Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000). Une carte rseau Fast Ethernet (10/100) donnera des performances iSCSI insuffisantes. DroboPro comporte un port iSCSI et DroboElite en a deux. Du fait que DroboElite autorise les trames jumbo, assurez-vous que votre carte Gigabit Ethernet est compatible avec la modification du paramtre MTU. Sur DroboElite, vous pouvez accder au paramtre MTU par Drobo Dashboard : Contrles avancs -> Outils -> Paramtres -> iSCSI Un cble Ethernet standard donne les meilleures performances iSCSI avec votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Un cble de ce type est inclus avec DroboPro et deux dans l'emballage DroboElite d'origine. Assurez-vous que votre pare-feu est configur pour autoriser les connexions rseau entrantes et sortantes pour l'application Drobo Dashboard (iSCSI utilise le port 3260). Les ordinateurs Windows XP 64 bits et Windows Server 2003 64 bits devraient avoir install .NET 2.0 (ou ultrieur) pour se connecter DroboPro/DroboElite.

Un initiateur iSCSI est indispensable pour la connexion par Ethernet. Sur les ordinateurs Windows, nous utilisons l'initiateur iSCSI de Microsoft, inclus dans Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 et ultrieur. (Si vous utilisez des versions prcdentes, Drobo Dashboard installera l'initiateur iSCSI Microsoft). Pour les Macs, nous fournissons notre propre initiateur iSCSI, install par le programme d'installation Drobo Dashboard. Si vous utilisez Linux, consultez notre site web, www.drobo.com/linux pour plus d'informations. Les utilisateurs de ESX peuvent utiliser l'initiateur iSCSI fourni par VMware. Pour plus d'informations sur Linux et ESX, visitez le site de support Data Robotics l'adresse www.drobo.com/support. Si vous utilisez un ordinateur sous Windows Vista, SP1 (ou ultrieur) doit tre install. Sinon, Drobo Dashboard ne peut pas dcouvrir DroboPro/DroboElite.
Configuration 1 : DroboPro/DroboElite connect un commutateur qui n'est PAS directement connect un rseau :

Si vous disposez d'un commutateur 1 Gbps, vous pouvez connecter DroboPro ou DroboElite et votre ordinateur dsign (autrement dit le point de montage) au mme commutateur. Vous pouvez connecter plusieurs DroboPro ou DroboElite au mme commutateur, condition que les priphriques de stockage Drobo et votre ou vos ordinateurs aient chacun des adresses IP statiques diffrentes (voir ci-dessous). Vous devrez attribuer une adresse IP au ou aux ports iSCSI de cette configuration. Utilisez la connexion USB pour configurer le ou les ports. Remarquez que selon la quantit de trafic utilisant votre commutateur, ce type de connexion pourrait affecter les performances. Configuration : 1. Quand DroboPro ou DroboElite s'est connect correctement par la connexion USB (y compris russite de la dcouverte par Drobo Dashboard), cliquez sur Contrles avancs -> Outils -> Paramtres -> iSCSI. 2. Choisissez une adresse IP diffrente pour chaque connexion iSCSI et chaque DroboPro/DroboElite que vous configurez, et configurez les autres paramtres ncessaires.

3. Aprs enregistrement de vos paramtres, arrtez en toute scurit votre DroboPro/DroboElite (Contrles avancs -> Outils -> Arrt) et dbranchez le cble USB. 4. Branchez une extrmit du cble Ethernet fourni au port iSCSI (Ethernet) l'arrire de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Puis branchez l'autre extrmit au commutateur. Sur le DroboElite, rptez pour le deuxime port iSCSI le cas chant. 5. Branchez le cordon d'alimentation et basculez l'interrupteur d'alimentation l'arrire gauche de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. 6. Aprs la squence de dmarrage, Drobo Dashboard devrait reconnatre votre ou vos priphriques de stockage Drobo, vous pouvez alors commencer la procdure de configuration et de formatage du volume.
Configuration 2 : DroboPro/DroboElite connect un commutateur connect un rseau :

Vous devrez attribuer une adresse IP au ou aux ports iSCSI de cette configuration. Utilisez la connexion USB pour configurer le ou les ports. N'oubliez pas qu'un DroboPro/DroboElite dans cette configuration peut dgrader les performances du rseau. Les performances du DroboPro/DroboElite peuvent aussi tre dgrades par le trafic sur le rseau. Configuration : 1. Quand DroboPro ou DroboElite s'est connect correctement par la connexion USB (y compris russite de la dcouverte par Drobo Dashboard), cliquez sur Contrles avancs -> Outils -> Paramtres -> iSCSI. 2. Choisissez une adresse IP diffrente pour chaque connexion iSCSI et chaque DroboPro/DroboElite que vous configurez. Assurez-vous que les adresses se trouvent en dehors de la plage d'attribution du serveur DHCP ainsi que sur un sous-rseau accessible par votre ordinateur (o Drobo Dashboard est lanc). 3. Aprs enregistrement de vos paramtres, arrtez en toute scurit votre DroboPro/DroboElite (Contrles avancs -> Outils -> Arrt) et dbranchez le cble USB. 4. Branchez une extrmit du cble Ethernet fourni au port iSCSI (Ethernet) l'arrire de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Puis branchez l'autre extrmit au routeur ou au commutateur.

5. Branchez le cordon d'alimentation et basculez l'interrupteur d'alimentation l'arrire gauche de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. 6. Aprs la squence de dmarrage, Drobo Dashboard devrait reconnatre votre priphrique de stockage Drobo, vous pouvez alors commencer la procdure de configuration et de formatage du volume.
Configuration 3 : Connexion directe un ordinateur :

Si vous vous apprtez connecter votre DroboPro ou DroboElite directement sur l'interface Ethernet de votre ordinateur, assurez-vous que le port rseau de votre ordinateur est configur pour utiliser DHCP et attribuer automatiquement une adresse IP. Si votre ordinateur n'a qu'une seule connexion Ethernet et que vous l'utilisez dj pour la connexion un rseau, vous devez acheter et installer une carte supplmentaire Ethernet standard (1 Gbps) compatible avec votre ordinateur. Une carte rseau normale est indispensable, car Data Robotics n'assure pas la prise en charge des cartes spcifiques iSCSI. (Consultez les Configurations 1 ou 2 comme mthode alternative n'imposant pas l'achat et l'installation d'une carte Ethernet supplmentaire). Configuration : 1. Branchez une extrmit du cble Ethernet fourni au port iSCSI (Ethernet) l'arrire de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Puis branchez l'autre extrmit un port rseau disponible sur votre ordinateur. 2. Branchez le cordon d'alimentation fourni au port d'alimentation l'arrire de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. 3. Branchez le cordon d'alimentation et basculez l'interrupteur d'alimentation l'arrire gauche de votre priphrique de stockage Drobo. 4. Aprs la squence de dmarrage, Drobo Dashboard devrait reconnatre votre DroboPro/DroboElite, vous pouvez alors commencer la procdure de configuration et de formatage du volume.

Cration d'un volume

La gestion des volumes permet de crer et de grer plusieurs volumes sur votre DroboPro ou DroboElite, chacun avec sa propre taille et format de fichier pris en charge. Aprs la configuration de vos volumes, chacun s'affiche de faon unique, plutt que comme un volume unique. Sur DroboElite, vous pouvez aussi dfinir un mot de passe CHAP pour tous les volumes que vous choisissez de protger contre un accs non autoris. Voir la page 16 pour plus d'informations. Par dfaut, DroboElite cre automatiquement un volume non format de 16 To. DroboPro cre un ou deux volumes de 2 To. Vous pouvez supprimer ces volumes si ncessaire.
Remarque : sous Windows, les volumes sont parfois appels disques logiques ou partitions. Sur un Mac, les volumes restent les volumes. Le terme "LUN" (Logical Unit Number) est parfois utilis pour dsigner des volumes aussi.

Pour accder Gestion des volumes, allez dans Contrles avancs > onglet Outils de Drobo Dashboard puis cliquez sur Gestion des volumes. Sur DroboPro, vous pouvez crer un maximum de 16 volumes. Sur DroboElite, vous pouvez crer un maximum de 255 volumes. La taille maximale de chaque volume est dtermine par le systme d'exploitation et le format de systme de fichiers que vous choisissez. (Pour plus d'informations, voir la page 15). DroboPro et DroboElite assure la prise en charge de volumes de taille pouvant atteindre 16 To. Ceci offre une plus grande souplesse en adaptant votre priphrique de stockage Drobo votre environnement unique. La technologie BeyondRAID de Drobo vous permet de crer des volumes, indpendamment de la capacit physique totale relle (fonction appele "provisionnement fin"). L'espace est ensuite allou aux volumes lors de l'ajout de donnes. Aprs configuration ou modification de vos volumes, la page principale de Drobo Dashboard affiche tous les volumes valides. Remarquez que sur DroboElite, vous devez utiliser la connexion iSCSI pour formater vos volumes. Si vous tes toujours connect en USB, arrtez votre DroboElite (Contrles avancs -> Outils -> Arrter), dbranchez le cble USB et connectez-vous un des ports iSCSI l'aide d'un des cbles Ethernet livrs. Aprs la configuration initiale, vous pourrez effectuer toutes les fonctions par la connexion iSCSI.

Choix d'un systme de fichiers et d'une taille de volume

Selon le systme d'exploitation de votre ordinateur, vous disposez de plusieurs options pour le format du systme de fichiers et pour la taille du volume sur votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Vous devez choisir la combinaison qui fonctionne le mieux pour votre utilisation prvue de votre priphrique de stockage Drobo. Pour la plupart des clients, il est recommand de choisir la taille de volume la plus grande disponible pour le systme de fichiers slectionn. La taille du volume que vous slectionnez est indpendante de la quantit de stockage relle dans votre DroboPro/DroboElite en raison de la technologie de virtualisation de stockage avance.

Si vous utilisez les formats de systme de fichiers VMFS ou EXT3 sur votre DroboElite, vous devrez utiliser la fonction de formatage de VMware ou de votre distribution Linux. Vous devriez configurer une ou des adresses IP et crer des volumes l'aide de Drobo Dashboard sur un Mac ou un PC Windows. Pour les clients DroboElite seulement, lors de la cration d'un volume pour VMFS, slectionnez l'option "Multi-hte" dans l'cran de configuration de volume. Pour EXT3, slectionnez l'option "Aucune".

Aprs configuration de votre DroboElite, vous devrez entrer les informations de connexion iSCSI dans l'initiateur iSCSI et formater les volumes. Vous pouvez identifier les volumes crs dans ESX et Linux en consultant l'ID de nud cible. L'ID de nud cible apparat sous la forme : iqn.2005-06.com.datarobotics:droboelite.tdb123456789.id1 L'avant-dernier lment est votre numro de srie DroboElite (en italique) et le dernier lment est le numro ID du volume (en gras). Dans Drobo Dashboard, le numro ID pour chaque volume apparat dans la colonne la plus gauche de la liste des volumes dans la fentre de gestion des volumes. Le nom complet du nud cible est visible dans la fentre principale de Drobo Dashboard et dans la fentre de gestion des volumes en faisant passer la souris sur le nom du volume. Remarque sur le Nom d'utilisateur et le Mot de passe pour les utilisateurs de VMware et Linux (DroboElite seulement)

Si vous dfinissez un mot de passe CHAP pour un ou plusieurs volumes lors de la configuration initiale, le nom d'utilisateur attribu par dfaut est "DroboElite" pour tous les volumes sur votre DroboElite. La dfinition d'un nom d'utilisateur pour un volume n'apparat pas dans Drobo Dashboard mme si vous l'utilisez pour dfinir un ou plusieurs mots de passe CHAP.

Voyants de DroboPro/DroboElite
L'un des nombreux avantages de votre priphrique de stockage Drobo est un ensemble de voyants qui indiquent tout ce que vous devez savoir, sans devoir dmarrer de logiciel sur votre ordinateur. N'oubliez pas, DroboPro et DroboElite sont conus pour contrler et protger activement vos donnes. DroboPro/DroboElite effectue automatiquement toute action ncessaire chaque fois que c'est possible et affiche les voyants suivants :

Voyants de disque

Vert : aucune action n'est ncessaire. Tous les disques sont fonctionnels. Jaune fixe : ajoutez un disque ou remplacez bientt celui existant par un plus grand. L'espace disque de DroboElite est insuffisant. Jaune et vert clignotant : ne retirez pas ces disques et n'teignez pas. DroboElite veille la protection de vos donnes. Rouge fixe : ajoutez un disque ou remplacez immdiatement celui existant par un disque plus grand. DroboElite a atteint un seuil critique bas au niveau de l'espace. Rouge clignotant : remplacez immdiatement ce disque. Ce disque est tomb en panne et doit tre remplac.

Voyant d'alimentation

Vert : DroboElite est allum et prt l'emploi. Jaune : DroboElite est en mode veille. Rouge : DroboElite a surchauff. Dbranchez le cble de donnes puis celui d'alimentation. Laissez-le refroidir puis redmarrez. Vert clignotant : les donnes sont activement transfres entre votre ordinateur et DroboElite. Bleu : affiche le pourcentage de remplissage de votre DroboElite, par incrments de 10 %.

IV. Utilisation de Drobo Dashboard avec votre DroboPro/DroboElite

Drobo Dashboard permet d'installer, de configurer et d'interagir avec votre priphrique de stockage Drobo.

Concepts de base de Drobo Dashboard

Drobo Dashboard est l'application compagnon recommande qui vous tient inform de l'tat de DroboPro/DroboElite et permet de personnaliser votre priphrique pour mieux rpondre vos besoins de stockage.
Remarque : pour installer Drobo Dashboard, vous devrez possder les droits d'administration sur votre ordinateur. Page principale

Ouvrez Drobo Dashboard et la page principale s'affiche. Cette page comprend un aperu rapide de l'tat et de l'utilisation de stockage de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Si vous possdez plusieurs priphriques de stockage Drobo, vous pouvez passer de l'un priphrique Drobo l'autre en cliquant sur l'onglet appropri en haut de la fentre. DroboPro

DroboElite

Le graphique secteurs indique l'espace de stockage actuellement utilis et l'espace libre restant. En plaant la souris sur ce graphique, vous voyez un rcapitulatif de la sant de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Ce panneau permet aussi de protger votre DroboElite (uniquement) en dfinissant un nom d'utilisateur et un mot de passe. Si vous l'avez dj configur, vous pouvez ouvrir une session sur votre DroboElite en remplissant les champs. Dans le panneau Volume, vous pouvez consulter les informations sur les volumes de votre DroboPro/DroboElite ainsi que choisir de monter ou dmonter un des volumes (DroboElite uniquement). Il suffit de cocher ou dcocher les cases Monter selon les besoins. tes-vous curieux de la manire dont sont utiliss vos disques ? Cliquez sur "Comment mon stockage est-il utilis ?" en bas gauche. La barre de rpartition de la capacit s'affiche et indique comment DroboPro/DroboElite utilise le stockage. Rserv pour les extensions : capacit inutilisable rserve un usage futur si un disque dur est plus grand que les autres. Cet espace devient disponible lorsque vous ajoutez un disque dur de plus grande capacit ou remplacez un petit disque par un plus grand. Utilis pour la protection : capacit de stockage qui permet de protger vos donnes contre toute panne de disque. Gnral : capacit utilise par DroboPro/DroboElite pour la gestion.
Conseil : Vous pouvez dterminer l'utilisation relle de l'espace disque en ouvrant Drobo Dashboard. Les voyants de capacit bleus l'avant de votre DroboPro/DroboElite donnent une approximation par incrments de 10 pour cent.

Contrles avancs : Onglet Donnes

L'onglet Donnes de contrles avancs contient des informations dtailles sur l'tat de votre DroboElite. Vous devez accder cet cran quand DroboElite est en cours de protection de vos donnes et que vous souhaitez savoir quand cette opration se terminera. La progression est indique dans la section "Protection des donnes".

Contrles avancs : Onglet Outils

L'onglet Outils donne accs aux contrles qui permettent de personnaliser votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Vous pouvez dans cette fentre arrter en toute scurit ou rinitialiser votre DroboPro/DroboElite, grer les volumes ou changer des paramtres spcifiques de votre priphrique de stockage Drobo. (Remarque : Un clic sur le bouton Rinitialiser efface toutes les donnes sur votre DroboPro ou DroboElite.) De plus, cette page affiche des informations utiles, dont le numro de srie de l'appareil et les versions en cours du logiciel et du microprogramme, c'est aussi une faon rapide de rechercher des mises jour de Drobo Dashboard et du microprogramme de votre appareil.

Fonctions supplmentaires

Drobo Dashboard fournit les fonctionnalits supplmentaires suivantes votre DroboPro/DroboElite, et permet d'effectuer des sauvegardes personnalises et de recevoir des notifications par e-mail.
DroboCopy

DroboCopy offre un moyen simple de sauvegarder les fichiers vers ou depuis votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Slectionnez le dossier sauvegarder, l'emplacement de sauvegarde, l'heure d'excution, et vous tes prt. Votre dossier de sauvegarde slectionn et tous les lments l'intrieur seront automatiquement copis lors de la premire excution de DroboCopy. Par la suite, seuls les nouveaux fichiers et ceux mis jour

seront copis dans le dossier de destination. (Les fichiers mis jour remplacent les fichiers les plus anciens.)

Pour commencer utiliser DroboCopy sur un PC, dmarrez Drobo Dashboard et cliquez avec le bouton droit sur l'icne Drobo Dashboard (graphique secteurs) dans la barre d'tat systme et slectionnez "Paramtres DroboCopy". Sur un Mac, dmarrer Drobo Dashboard, allez au menu Drobo Dashboard et slectionnez "Paramtres DroboCopy". Dans la fentre DroboCopy, cliquez sur "Nouveau DroboCopy" et choisissez les dossiers utiliser pour votre DroboCopy.
Remarque : Drobo Dashboard doit tre lanc pour que vos sauvegardes planifies fonctionnent.

Alertes

Drobo Dashboard affiche des alertes DroboPro/DroboElite spcifiques localement sur votre ordinateur. Pour les paramtres d'alertes, le niveau d'alerte souhait peut tre dfini dans Drobo Dashboard dans Contrles avancs > onglet Outils. Il se trouve dans le volet "Drobo va envoyer une alerte" en haut droite. Drobo Dashboard peut galement envoyer des alertes par e-mail selon un niveau d'alerte slectionn pour tous les priphriques de stockage Drobo connects votre ordinateur (y compris des DroboShares sur votre rseau). Pour accder cette option sur un PC, dmarrez Drobo Dashboard et cliquez avec le bouton droit sur l'icne de la barre d'tat systme Drobo Dashboard et slectionnez "Paramtres des e-mail". Sur un Mac, dmarrez Drobo Dashboard et allez dans le menu Drobo Dashboard et slectionnez "Paramtres de messagerie".

Drobo Dashboard avanc

L'application Drobo Dashboard permet de vrifier facilement l'tat, de grer des volumes, de modifier les paramtres, etc., sur votre DroboPro ou DroboElite. Pour une prsentation de Drobo Dashboard, voir la page 18. Drobo Dashboard simplifie galement la sauvegarde des fichiers vers ou depuis votre DroboElite et la configuration des alertes.
Gestion des volumes

Vous pouvez crer, supprimer et renommer vos volumes par la fentre de gestion de volumes de Drobo Dashboard. Les utilisateurs de DroboElite peuvent aussi protger par mot de passe des volumes individuels en cliquant sur Activer dans la colonne CHAP en regard du volume. Dfinition d'un mot de passe CHAP (DroboElite seulement)

Par dfaut, les volumes de DroboElite sont accessibles sans le nom d'utilisateur et mot de passe d'administration. Pour protger un volume par mot de passe, dfinissez un mot de passe CHAP pour celui-ci dans la fentre de gestion des volumes. Clients VMware et Linux : voir la page 16 pour plus d'informations.

Aprs un clic sur "Paramtres", vous pouvez voir deux onglets (DroboPro) ou trois onglets (DroboElite) permettant de configurer votre priphrique Drobo en fonction de vos besoins spcifiques.

Redondance deux disques

Ce paramtre permet de protger vos donnes stockes contre des pannes simultanes de deux disques. Lorsque cette scurit supplmentaire est active, la quantit d'espace utilisable est rduite afin de fournir cette protection. Pour utiliser la protection deux disques, vous devez possder au moins trois disques durs dans votre DroboPro/DroboElite et un espace disque libre suffisant. Par dfaut, ce paramtre est dsactiv. Pour l'activer, allez dans Contrles avancs > Outils -> Paramtres. La protection deux disques peut tre active ou dsactive tant que la configuration requise minimum mentionne ci-dessus est respecte. Remarquez que la modification de ce paramtre ncessitera un certain temps pour la rorganisation de vos donnes si vous en avez dj enregistr sur les disques. Le temps ncessaire dpend de la quantit de donnes enregistres.
Arrt du disque

Le paramtre par dfaut pour cette fonction est 15 minutes sur DroboPro et "Jamais" sur DroboElite. L'arrt de disques permet d'conomiser de l'lectricit et peut prolonger la dure de vie des disques. Remarquez que quand les disques se sont arrts, il faudra quelques instants votre priphrique de stockage Drobo pour les remettre en route en cas de demande d'accs. Pour modifier ce paramtre, allez dans Contrles avancs > onglet Outils et cliquez sur le bouton Paramtres. Vous pouvez modifier le dlai d'arrt des disques l'aide du curseur.

Paramtres Onglet iSCSI

DroboPro

La fentre iSCSI permet de configurer votre connexion iSCSI sur votre DroboPro. Configurer automatiquement (par dfaut) permet Drobo Dashboard d'tablir la connexion pour vous lorsque vous connectez directement le DroboPro votre ordinateur. Si vous voulez ou devez attribuer une adresse IP spcifique pour votre connexion iSCSI, utilisez la configuration manuelle. (Vous pouvez utiliser la connexion FireWire, USB ou iSCSI pour dfinir l'adresse IP). Dans Contrles avancs > onglet Outils, cliquez sur "Paramtres". Ensuite, cliquez sur l'onglet iSCSI dans la fentre Paramtres et sur "Attribuer manuellement une adresse IP".
Remarque : si vous connectez plusieurs DroboPros un ordinateur, la configuration manuelle est requise.

DroboElite

La fentre iSCSI permet de configurer votre ou vos connexions iSCSI sur votre DroboElite. Les ports iSCSI sont configurs automatiquement (par dfaut) comme indiqu sur la copie d'cran ci-dessus pour un DroboElite. Si vous voulez ou devez attribuer une adresse IP spcifique pour votre ou vos connexions iSCSI, il suffit de remplacer les informations par dfaut en consquence. Si vous connectez votre DroboElite un commutateur ou un routeur, commencez par connecter DroboElite en USB pour configurer la ou les adresses IP. Ensuite, basculez vers la connexion iSCSI.
Remarque : si vous connectez plusieurs DroboPros et/ou DroboElites un seul ordinateur, la configuration d'adresses IP diffrentes est obligatoire.

Paramtres Onglet Admin (DroboElite uniquement)

La fentre Admin permet de configurer le nom d'utilisateur et le mot de passe pour administrer DroboElite. Ce nom d'utilisateur et ce mot de passe vitent que des personnes non autorises modifient les paramtres et grent les volumes sur votre DroboElite. Quand un mot de passe a t dfini, toutes les options de la section Contrles avancs de Drobo Dashboard ne seront pas accessibles sans ces pices justificatives. Remarquez que ceci doit tre configur pour chaque DroboElite, si ncessaire.

Comment dois-je tlcharger les dernires versions de microprogramme de Drobo Dashboard et DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. Pour tlcharger les dernires versions des logiciels, cliquez sur le bouton "Rechercher les mises jour" dans la fentre Contrles avancs > onglet Outils. Q. Comment dois-je ajouter de la capacit mon DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. Soit ajoutez un disque dur SATA 3,5" standard une baie de donnes vide, soit retirez le disque de petite capacit et remplacez-le par un disque de plus grande capacit. Vous pouvez trs bien le faire lorsque DroboPro/DroboElite est en fonctionnement. Il n'est pas ncessaire de mettre votre priphrique de stockage Drobo en veille. Si vous ajoutez plusieurs disques, insrez-les un la fois et laissez DroboPro/DroboElite se rorganiser (voyants vert et jaune clignotant) aprs chacun, avant d'ajouter le suivant. Q. Pourquoi dois-je utiliser l'interface USB sur DroboElite ? R. Le port USB ne s'utilise que pour l'administration sur DroboElite, essentiellement la configuration rseau. Vous ne pouvez pas formater de volumes ni transfrer de donnes en USB. Cette connexion permet aussi de modifier des paramtres si votre connexion iSCSI ne fonctionne pas correctement. (Sur DroboPro, vous pouvez utiliser cette connexion pour tous les usages, y compris formatage de volumes et transfert de donnes). Q. Pourquoi mon ordinateur affiche-t-il que j'ai davantage de capacit qu'il n'en a effectivement ? R. En fonction de la taille du volume avec laquelle vous choisissez de formater votre DroboPro/DroboElite, ce que le systme

dexploitation rapportera variera. En gnral votre systme d'exploitation affiche la taille du volume que vous avez cr, quelle que soit sa capacit physique relle. Mais il affiche correctement l'espace utilis. Quand vous ajoutez suffisamment de capacit de disque dur pour dpasser la taille de volume choisie lors de l'installation, il suffit de crer un nouveau volume par la gestion des volumes de Drobo Dashboard. Q. Comment puis-je dire combien de capacit il reste DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. La page principale de Drobo Dashboard fournit les informations les plus prcises. Voir page 18. Vous pouvez avoir une ide approximative en vrifiant simplement la jauge de capacit en bleu l'avant de DrodobPro/DroboElite. Chaque voyant bleu reprsente 10% de la capacit disponible qui contient les donnes protges. Si vous observez trois voyants bleus, environ 70 % restent disponibles pour les donnes. Q. Mon ordinateur me dira-t-il combien despace est utilis sur DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. Oui, l'espace utilis est reprsent avec prcision par votre systme d'exploitation. La taille de volume, cependant, reflte la taille que vous avez cre, indpendamment des disques actuels de votre DroboPro/DroboElite. Q. Comment puis-je effacer les donnes de mes disques et rinitialiser mon DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. AVERTISSEMENT : CETTE PROCEDURE VA EFFACER TOUTES LES DONNEES STOCKEES SUR DROBOPRO ET DROBOELITE. Deux mthodes de rinitialisation de DroboPro ou DroboElite sont disponibles : d'abord, dans Contrles avancs > onglet Outils, cliquez sur le bouton "Rinitialiser". Les instructions affiches l'cran vous guident tout au long du processus. La deuxime mthode consiste arrter le DroboPro/DroboElite. Ensuite, trouvez le petit trou de rinitialisation sans tiquette l'arrire de DroboElite (ct oppos au bouton d'alimentation). Insrez un trombone redress travers le trou non marqu. Vous devez pouvoir sentir que cet interrupteur s'enfonce. En maintenant appuy cet interrupteur, allumez DroboPro/DroboElite et maintenez linterrupteur enfonc jusqu ce que le voyant dalimentation

commence clignoter en vert. Cette opration prendra environ 30 secondes. Q. Ai-je besoin de formater les nouveaux disques que jajoute DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. Lorsque vous ajoutez un disque une baie de disque vide ou remplacez un disque existant aprs le formatage initial, vous accdez immdiatement toute la capacit supplmentaire. Vous n'aurez pas formater chacun des disques ajouts votre priphrique de stockage Drobo. Q. Que se passe-t-il si j'ai format au dpart mon DroboPro ou DroboElite comme volume 2 To puis ajoute plus de 2 To de capacit protge ? R. Si vous formatez DroboPro/DroboElite pour une dimension de volume donne (par exemple volume de 2 To lors du formatage initial), puis ajoutez plus de capacit de stockage supplmentaire que ce que peut contenir ce volume (par exemple, ajout d'un ou plusieurs disques de 1,5 To), vous devrez utiliser la gestion des volumes pour crer un nouveau volume. Si vous souhaitez conserver les donnes sur un mme volume plutt que sur deux, vous devrez migrer les donnes vers le nouveau volume plus grand. Si vous avez suffisamment de capacit, vous pouvez le faire sur votre DroboPro/DroboElite par la gestion des volumes. Sinon, vous devrez copier toutes vos donnes vers un autre priphrique de stockage, reformater votre DroboPro/DroboElite avant de recopier les donnes.
Remarque : la taille de volume maximale de Windows XP est limite 2 To. Dans ce cas prcis, vous devrez crer un volume pour tout stockage ajout dpassant une taille de volume de 2 To.

Q. Est-ce que les aimants qui maintiennent la faade peuvent compromettre mes donnes ? R. Non. En fait, les aimants l'intrieur de votre ou vos disques sont beaucoup plus puissants, et beaucoup plus proches des plateaux du disque dur que la faade.

Q. Comment dois-je sauvegarder des donnes sur DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. Les donnes sur DroboPro/DroboElite sont sauvegardes de faon intrinsque, mais cela ne protge bien entendu pas des incendies, des vols ou des fichiers accidentellement effacs. Vous pouvez dupliquer des donnes vers nimporte quel autre support par votre ordinateur, ou connecter un deuxime priphrique de stockage Drobo votre ordinateur, dupliquer les donnes, et vous dplacer vers un autre endroit scuris. Pour plus d'informations, veuillez visiter notre site Meilleures pratiques www.drobo.com/support/best_practices. Q. Y-a-t-il un moyen infaillible de protger mes donnes sur le DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. Si le DroboPro/DroboElite est la seule source de vos donnes, il sera considr comme systme de stockage principal. Le seul moyen de protger entirement vos donnes est de conserver une sauvegarde relle. (Une sauvegarde implique une source secondaire de vos donnes). DroboPro et DroboElite possdent une fonction de redondance deux disques, qui protge contre des pannes simultanes de deux disques. Voir page 24.) De nombreux clients utilisent un autre produit Drobo pour sauvegarder les donnes de leur DroboPro/DroboElite afin de possder deux copies de leurs donnes. Tout dpend de l'importance que vous prtez ces donnes et/ou du niveau de simplicit pour recompiler ou pour recrer ces donnes. Lorsque la plupart des socits sauvegardent leurs donnes, ils stockent la deuxime (voire une troisime) copie des donnes un autre endroit. Ainsi, ils sont assez rapidement oprationnels en cas d'vnement dans le bureau ou centre de donnes. Pourquoi ne vois-je pas davantage de capacit aprs avoir supprim un grand nombre de fichiers ? R. Vous pourrez. Veuillez patienter. DroboPro et DroboElite profitent de cette occasion pour optimiser la disposition des donnes tout en rcuprant de l'espace "vide" rcemment cr. Mais, certains utilitaires (ceux de Norton, par exemple) permettent de protger vos donnes d'une suppression accidentelle. Veillez dsactiver cette fonction afin de supprimer les donnes de

DroboPro/DroboElite. En outre, vous devrez peut-tre supprimer les fichiers de la Corbeille pour les retirer dfinitivement de votre DroboPro ou DroboElite. Q. Pourquoi y a-t-il des donnes sur DroboPro/DroboElite avant que je n'en copie dessus ? R. Votre systme dexploitation et le microprogramme de DroboPro/DroboElite placent lun et lautre une petite quantit dinformations de formatage sur les disques pralablement tout transfert de donnes. Q. Pourquoi mon DroboPro/DroboElite parait-il extrmement lent quand il est presque plein ? R. Au lieu de refuser de copier des fichiers lorsque sa capacit est presque pleine (plus de 95%), DroboPro et DroboElite prfrent passer en mode de "ralentissement" afin de vous avertir de vrifier la jauge de capacit bleue. Si tous les dix voyants bleus sont allums, c'est qu'il est temps d'ajouter de la capacit. Q. Mes voyants de baie de donnes clignotent en vert et jaune. Qu'est-ce que cela signifie ? R. Votre DroboPro/DroboElite veille activement la protection de vos donnes. Vous pouvez continuer d'utiliser votre DroboPro/DroboElite normalement, mais n'arrtez pas l'appareil lorsque les voyants clignotent, ni n'ajoutez ni ne retirez les disques avant que les voyants s'arrtent de clignoter. Q. Pourquoi est-ce que je ne reois pas dalertes par e-mail ? R. Contactez votre fournisseur de messagerie pour contrler deux fois les informations fournies lors de la configuration des alertes par e-mail. Non, la technologie en attente de brevet (appele BeyondRAID) l'intrieur de DroboElite n'est pas RAID et a t dveloppe spcifiquement pour excuter des tches de gestion et de configuration de donnes automatiquement, de sorte que vous nayez rien faire. Dois-je dfragmenter priodiquement les disques de DroboPro/DroboElite ? R. Non, ce type doptimisation est effectu automatiquement. Q. Qu'arrive-t-il mes donnes en cas de panne de courant ? R. DroboPro et DroboElite grent automatiquement les interruptions et disposent de batteries internes rechargeables qui empchent que des donnes soient crites pendant une panne. Safety and Warranty

Safety
This product was designed and manufactured to meet strict quality and safety standards. There are, however, some installation and operational precautions of which you should be particularly aware. Please read these instructions before operating Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite or DroboShare and save them for future reference. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Retain instructions: The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference. Heed Warnings: All warnings on the appliance and in the operating instructions should be followed. Follow Instructions: All operating and usage instructions should be followed. Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, and DroboShare are to be used with UL Listed ITE Equipment only. Avoid Water and Moisture: Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, and DroboShare should not be used near water (for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool). 7. Provide Adequate Ventilation: Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, and DroboShare should each be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. For example, Drobo should not be situated against a surface that may block the ventilation openings or placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or cabinet that may impede the flow of air through the ventilation openings. Additionally, no other device other than a Drobo should be placed on top of DroboShare. 8. Protect from Heat: Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, and DroboShare should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other appliances (including amplifiers) that produce heat. 9. Protect Power Cords: Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords and plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point at which they exit from the product. 10. Avoid Object and Liquid Entry: Never push objects of any kind into Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, and DroboShare ventilation slots except drives compliant with the User Guide as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short the parts, resulting in the risk of fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind onto Drobo. 11. TO PREVENT ELECTRIC SHOCK, MATCH WIDE BLADE OF ELECTRICAL PLUG TO WIDE SLOT AND INSERT FULLY. 12. DROBO, DROBOPRO, AND DROBOELITE CONTAIN A LITHIUM BATTERY WHICH CAN EXPLODE IF MISHANDLED. BATTERY IS NOT FIELD OR USER-SERVICEABLE. Please dispose of battery in a manner consistent with local jurisdictions. 13. DRIVES IN DROBO, DROBOPRO, AND DROBOELITE WILL RETAIN HEAT AFTER USE. PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING DRIVES FROM DROBO, DROBOPRO, OR DROBOELITE. TO SAFELY REMOVE DRIVES, PRESS THE DRIVE LATCH TO RELEASE THE DRIVE AND ALLOW THE DRIVE TO COOL IN THE DATA BAY FOR 10 MINUTES BEFORE COMPLETELY REMOVING THE DRIVE FROM DROBO, DROBOPRO, OR DROBOELITE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE MAY RESULT IN INJURY FROM HOT DRIVES. 14. Damage Requiring Service: Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, and DroboShare should be serviced by an employee of Data Robotics, Inc. or a Data Robotics, Inc. Authorized Reseller ("qualified service personnel"), and should be serviced when: A. THE POWER SUPPLY CORD OR PLUG IS DAMAGED OR FRAYED; B. LIQUID HAS SPILLED INTO DROBO, DROBOPRO, DROBOELITE, OR DROBOSHARE; C. DROBO, DROBOPRO, DROBOELITE, OR DROBOSHARE HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO RAIN OR WATER; D. DROBO, DROBOPRO, DROBOELITE, OR DROBOSHARE DOES NOT OPERATE NORMALLY WHEN YOU FOLLOW THE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS; E. DROBO, DROBOPRO, DROBOELITE, OR DROBOSHARE HAS BEEN DROPPED OR THE CHASSIS DAMAGED; F. DROBO, DROBOPRO, DROBOELITE, OR DROBOSHARE EXHIBITS A DISTINCT CHANGE IN PERFORMANCE. 15. Use only the supplied USB 2.0, FireWire 800, Ethernet, and power cables when operating Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, or DroboShare. Servicing The user should not attempt to service Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, or DroboShare beyond that described as user service items in the FAQ section of this manual, the Troubleshooting sections of the Help Files, or the support Knowledge Base. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel. Cleaning Unplug Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, or DroboShare from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners; use a damp cloth. If Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, or DroboShare comes in contact with any liquid, unplug the power adaptor and let Drobo dry thoroughly before plugging back in. Power Source Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, or DroboShare should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label or in this User Guide. If you are not sure of the type of power supplied to your home or business, consult your local power company. Overloaded Power Outlets Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords, this can result in risk of fire or electric shock. Electric Shock To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, or DroboShare. Doing so will void the warranty. Take it to a quailed service person when service or repair work is required. Opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other risks. Incorrect reassembly can cause electric shock when Drobo or DroboShare is used. Moving Avoid moving Drobo, DroboPro, DroboElite, or DroboShare while it is plugged in to avoid shock and vibration damage to the installed hard disk drives.

Electrostatic Discharge - The components inside your Drobo and disk drives are sensitive to static electricity, also known as electrostatic discharge. Before you install any disk drive, we recommend that you do the following: 1) Avoid staticcausing surfaces such as carpeted floors, plastic, and packing foam; 2) Discharge yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface such as a desk or rack mount; 3) Remove disk drives from their antistatic bags only when you are ready to use them. Be sure to follow any additional recommendations that the disk drive manufacturers provides. Repair Technician Warning! - Before opening the DroboPro or DroboElite unit or removing the power supply assembly, the AC cord MUST be unplugged from the outside of the unit and the unit must be unpowered. The System Earthing connections of the internal AC cable must not be removed if the system is powered on for service access. COVERAGE Data Robotics' warranty obligations are limited to the terms set forth herein. This Limited Warranty applies only to Product manufactured by or for Data Robotics that can be identified by the "Data Robotics" trademark, trade name, or logo affixed to them ("Product") and is provided only to the original end-user purchaser of the Product ("You"). Data Robotics warrants against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a period of: (i) ONE (1) YEAR, for Product other than DroboPro Product and DroboElite Product sold outside of Europe; and (ii) TWO (2) YEARS, for the DroboPro Product and DroboElite Product sold outside of Europe; and (iii) for a period of TWO (2) YEARS for Product sold in Europe; from the date of retail purchase by the original end-user purchaser ("Warranty Period"). For a period of ninety days from retail purchase by You (we call this ninety days the "Technical Support Access Period"), as part of this limited warranty coverage, if the Online Help Resources don't address the support issue, You are entitled to initiate a support request online at www.datarobotics.com/support. After the Technical Support Access Period, support requests may be made at an additional fee available on request. In response to support requests, a Data Robotics representative or Data Robotics Authorized Reseller will help determine whether Your Product requires service and, if it does, will inform you how Data Robotics will provide it. Warranty service will be provided from the country from which the Product was originally purchased to the extent reasonably possible.
