Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest editi on, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australi an Standards and related publications wil l be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publi cati ons, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head off ice of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This standard was issued in draft form for public review as DR 81158.

PREFACE
This standard was prepared by the Association’s Committee on Gas and Liquid Petroleum Piping Systems.
The standard is based on ISO/DIS 91/1*, Petroleum Measurement Tables, Part 1—Tables Based on
Reference Temperatures of 15°C and 60°F, with the addition of parts of tables from ASTM/IP Petroleum
Measurement Tables, 1952 edition. Australia participated in the preparation of ISO/DIS 91/1 through
Committee ISO/TC 28—Petroleum Products and Lubricants. The ISO/ DIS was approved in January 1981
by 26 countries, including Australia.
The petroleum measurement tables called up by reference in this standard provide data for the calculation
of petroleum quantities, in both commercial transactions and engineering procedures, and were developed
by—
The American Petroleum Institute (API)—U.S.A.,
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)—U.S.A.; and
The Institute of Petroleum (IP)—U.K.
In their latest editions they have been adopted by those organizations under the following designations:
API 2540—1980;

ANSI/ASTM D 1250—80; and

IP200—80;
and are being separately published by the three organizations.† The tables are based on new data for
thermal expansion of petroleum produced by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards (NBS), which replace
data originally published by NBS in 1916. The earlier data were derived from measurements on North
American petroleum, but the new data have been obtained by the examination of petroleum from
world-wide sources. Because the new tables do not cover as wide a range of density as the earlier tables,
it has been found necessary to retain parts of the earlier tables published as ASTM/IP Petroleum
Measurement Tables, 1952 Edition.
ISO 91/1 and ISO 91/2 will make provision for the use of three systems of petroleum measurement as
follows:
(a) SI (metric) units based on a reference temperature of 15°C.
(b) SI (metric) units based on a reference temperature of 2°C.
(c) American units based on a reference temperature of 60°F.
That standard will also provide tables for interconversion between the three systems.
For Australian use, this standard adopts SI (metric) units based on a reference temperature of 15°C,
together with tables for conversion of measurements in other units to the Australian standard units. The
conversion tables are recommended for the following:
(i) Conversion to SI (metric) units of quantities of imported petroleum which have been stated in
American units.
(ii) Conversion to American units of quantities of exported petroleum which have been stated in SI
(metric) units.
(iii) Continued use in Australia of existing measurement facilities which cannot readily be metricated.
(iv) Use in engineering calculations of data and procedures which are available only in American units.

* To be published as ISO 91/1 in 1982. ISO/DIS 91/2 covers tables based on a reference temperature of 20°C.
† All volumes of the tables may be purchased from the publishers, or ordered through SAA. The tables are also available on
microfiche, magnetic tape and as FORTRAN card decks.
