Project Life Cycle


Organisations performing projects will usually divide each project into several project phases to improve management control and provide for links to the ongoing operations of the performing organisation Collectively, the project phases are known as the life cycle

Project Life Cycle


A collection of generally sequential project phases whose name and number are determined by the control needs of the organisation or organisations involved in the project

Characteristics of Project Phases


Marked by completion of one or more deliverables Conclusion of project phase is generally marked by a review of both key deliverables and project performance to:
Determine if the project should continue into its next phase Detect and correct errors cost-effectively

Project Life Cycle Characteristics


Cost and staffing levels are low at start, higher towards the end and drops rapidly as the project draws to a conclusion Risk and uncertainty is highest at start of the project Ability to influence the final characteristics of the projects product and project final cost is highest at the start and gets progressively lower as the project continues

A program is a group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not available from managing them individually

Program management is the centralised, coordinated management of a group of projects to achieve the programs strategic objectives and benefits

Portfolios and Portfolio Management


A portfolio is a group of projects and/or programs and other work that are grouped together to facilitate effective management of that work to meet strategic business objectives Portfolio management goals can include:
Maximise value of the portfolio by careful examination of candidate projects and programs for inclusion in the portfolio and the timely exclusion of projects not meeting the portfolios strategic objectives To balance the portfolio among incremental and radical investments and for efficient use of resources

Project Management Office (1)


A project management office (PMO) is an organisational unit to centralise and coordinate the management of projects under its domain. PMO features can include:
Shared and coordinated resources across all projects Identification and development of PM methodology, best practices and standards Clearinghouse and management of project policies, procedures, templates and other shared documentation Centralised configuration management for all projects Centralised repository and management for both shared and unique risks, lessons learnt and other information for all projects
