They also have a separate location for homeless men. Since it started in 1994; Genesis House, and its staff, has offered compassionate care to its residents. Their goal is to provide a caring family environment while the people are in a troubled time. Genesis House works to make the lives of its homeless men, women, and families better by providing food, shelter, case management and after care services. Genesis House also receives medical and mental health care as well as other needs to make them self sufficient. Genesis House staff takes particular care in making sure their residents can provide for themselves after leaving the shelter. Genesis Houses Board of Directors is made up of 11 different governing congregations. All people, who want to change the circumstances that made them homeless, are welcomed into the emergency shelter. Last year 24 children and their families, totaling 39 families, resided at the women and family shelter. The mens shelter housed 42 men. People from birth to 85 years of age were sheltered and a total of 19,500 meals were provided. Genesis House has three staff members and a volunteer house manager at each location. The sand works to gently clean up your feet without the use of tools. The sand is gentle on your feet and is very effective at working down calluses. I usually stand with my feet in the water and work them back and forth in the sand for short periods, but taking a walk in the sand/water would likely be just as effective. GENESIS HOUSE OF OLEAN, INC. The Genesis House of Olean, Inc. is a non-profit organization that houses homeless women and families. They also have a separate location for homeless men. Since it started in 1994; Genesis House, and its staff, has offered compassionate care to its residents. Their goal is to provide a caring family environment while the people are in a troubled time. Genesis House works to make the lives of its homeless men, women, and families better by providing food, shelter, case management and after care services. Genesis House also receives medical and mental health care as well as other needs to make them self sufficient. Genesis House staff takes particular care in making sure their residents can provide for themselves after leaving the shelter. Genesis Houses Board of Directors is made up of 11 different governing congregations. All people, who want to change the circumstances that made them homeless, are welcomed into the emergency shelter. Last year 24 children and their families, totaling 39 families, resided at the women and family shelter. The mens shelter housed 42 men. People from birth to 85 years of age were sheltered and a total of 19,500 meals were provided. Genesis House has three staff members and a volunteer house manager at each location. The Town of Portville was officially formed April 27, 1837. It derived its name from the fact that it was a prominent shipping point for lumber and shingles.
Oldest House in Portville Located at 52 South Main Street is the oldest house in the village of Portville. It was built in 1822 by Luman Rice.

1809: Ashel, Rufus and William Atherton or Pinkerton (Historical sources differ as to the correct name) settle on east bank of Allegany River and build first sawmill. 1813: John Morris settles near mouth of Oswayo Creek and his son is the first birth recorded in the Village (1814). 1813: Two Dodge brothers come into the area, settled on Dodge Creek and build a sawmill. 1822: Anna Carpenter taught the first high school in the summer. 1822: Luman Rice kept the first inn. 1823: Allen Rice kept the first store. 1827: Post Office for the area was established at Mill Grove south of Portville. 1830: First schoolhouse is built at Gordans Mills. 1830: Samual King built first grist mill on Dodge Creek.
1837: Town of Portville is established 1841: Post Office is moved into the village. 1845: First Methodist meeting house was built 1849: Mark Comstock erected a small tannery on upper Temple Street 1852: First Presbyterian Church built 1852: The Olean-Portville Plank Road Company built a road between Olean and Portville. 1856: The Genesee Valley Canal was completed to Olean and later, with the influence of John Mersereu, was extended thru Portville to Mill Grove.
