The mass killing began when a white gunman or gunmen walked into the kitchen of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin about 10:30 CDT (11.30 a.m. EDT) and started shooting, according to congregation members in touch with people inside the building. "It was a very coordinated thing. It wasn't haphazard," temple member Amardeep Kaleka told CNN. He said his father was wounded in the attack at the temple in a suburb south of Milwaukee. Greenfield Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt, speaking for all law
enforcement at the temple, told reporters four people were killed inside the temple. Three were shot dead outside, including a gunman killed by a police officer. He declined to say whether there was more than one shooter, but hours after the attack heavily armed officers were still searching the sprawling temple complex for other suspects. Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital said three men had been brought in wounded and were in critical condition. One was in the operating room, the hospital said in a statement. The 20-year veteran officer who exchanged fire with the gunman was hit several times, Wentlandt said. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. Witnesses said hostages were being held inside the temple but police did not confirm this. President Barack Obama, alerted of the shooting at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, said he was "deeply saddened" by the attack, according to a White
House statement. He said his administration would give whatever aid was needed to respond to and investigate it. The Indian embassy in Washington said it was in touch with the White House's National Security Council about the shooting and an Indian diplomat had been sent to the Sikh temple in Wisconsin. "TARGETED AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY" The mass killing in Oak Creek is yet another in a recent rampage by gunmen in suburban America. In July, 12 people were killed and 58 wounded when a shooter opened fire at a screening of the latest Batman movie in the Denver suburb of Aurora, Colorado. In January 2011, thencongresswomen Gabrielle Giffords was the target of an assassination attempt in which six people were killed and 13 were wounded. "The gunman is worse than the one at the theater a couple of weeks ago because he targeted an
entire community," said temple member Jagatjit Sidhu. He was among dozens of temple members and onlookers who gathered in a parking lot near the temple after police sealed the building off. The Sikh faith includes belief in only one God and that the goal of life is to lead an exemplary existence. It is the fifth-largest organized religion in the world with more than 30 million followers. The temple in Oak Creek was founded in October 1997 and has a congregation of 350 to 400 people. There are an estimated 500,000 or more Sikhs in the United States. In the United States, especially since the attacks of September 11, 2001, Sikhs have sometimes been confused publicly with Muslims because of their turban headdress and beards. In September 2001, a Sikh gas station owner in Mesa, Arizona, was shot dead by a man who was said to be seeking revenge on Muslims for the hijacked plane attacks on the
United States. Members of the Milwaukee Sikh community complained to police and a state representative last year about an upturn in robberies and vandalism at Sikh-owned gas stations and stores. New York police said they were increasing security at Sikh temples as a precaution. There are no known threats against temples in the city, they said in a statement. Seven people were killed and at least three people wounded in shootings at a Sikh temple outside of Milwaukee Sunday morning. Among those killed was the gunman, who shot and wounded one police officer and was then confronted by another outside the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, near Milwaukee. One officer was shot multiple times, and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is in surgery. Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt said the officer, a 20-year veteran, is expected to survive. The gunman then confronted a second officer, who returned fire, striking and killing the suspect. Wentlandt said emergency medical personnel identified

Terrorists attack Egypt base killing 15, infiltrate Israel - Jerusalem Post
Global jihad terrorists infiltrated into Israel on Sunday night after breaking into an Egyptian military base and stealing two armored jeeps. One of the vehicles exploded as it rammed through the Kerem Shalom Crossing into Israel and another crossed through, after which it was targeted by an Israel Air Force strike. Yoav Mordechai told reporters that the IDF was still searching the area to rule out the possibility that additional terrorists remained in Israel. Sikhism is a monotheistic faith that was founded in South Asia more than 500 years ago. It has roughly 27 million followers worldwide. Observant Sikhs do not cut their hair; male followers often cover their heads with
turbans - which are considered sacred - and refrain from shaving their beards. There are roughly 500,000 Sikhs in the U.S., according to estimates. The majority worldwide live in India. Police at this time have not identified another gunman, but Wentlandt said the situation was fluid and a search of the ground is continuing. Credit: Reuters/Brendan McDermid NEW YORK| Sun Aug 5, 2012 5:39pm EDT (Reuters) - Knight Capital Group has been in talks with several parties on a financing deal that would help stave off bankruptcy after a technical glitch saddled it with $440 million in losses, two sources with knowledge of the discussions said on Sunday. An announcement on a deal, with parties that include Knight trading partners, is expected on Sunday or early Monday as Knight needs to assure customers about the viability of the company before markets open, said one of the sources, who sought anonymity as they are not authorized to speak publicly. Knight has also been in talks with restructuring lawyers as it seeks to keep its options open, according to the source.
While bankruptcy has not been ruled out, increasingly it looks as if financing could bail out the firm, a second source familiar with the situation said. Knight could stave off disaster if talks with a group of lenders, including trading partners, produce enough cash to cover trades. The equities trading firm lost most of its capital after a software glitch on Wednesday caused it to make thousands of unintended trades on about 140 stocks. CNBC reported on Sunday that Knight was close to securing a $400 million capital injection from a group of investors that is likely to include Chicago marketmaker Getco and Omaha brokerage firm TD Ameritrade. Citing a person involved in the deal, CNBC said the infusion would come in the form of a sale of convertible securities or bonds that turn into Knight stock at a fixed price. A spokeswoman for TD Ameritrade said the brokerage had no comment. It would be in TD Ameritrade's best interests to keep Knight
afloat, as the firm, the No. 1 U.S. brokerage by trading volume, has exclusive clearing deals with Knight. Two months ago, Knight bought Penson's futures business for $5 million. TD Ameritrade exclusively clears its clients' futures and forex trades through that platform. The Omaha, Nebraska-based brokerage's entire bond platform is also with Knight. "They really are handcuffed to Knight," a source with knowledge of TD Ameritrade's arrangements with Knight said. Spain charges two Russian citizens in al-Qaeda terror plot

They are currently under arrest until further court proceedings. The two are connected with Turk Cengiz Yalcin, who was already charged Friday with storing bomb -making material and a device likely to be used in a terror attack, La Razon, a Spanish newspaper, reports. One of the suspects names is Eldar Magomedov, although he introduced himself as Ahmad Avar to police earlier. The other
identified himself as Muhammad Adamov. Magomedov is known to have been a member of several terrorist organizations, according to the FSB, Russias domestic intelligence agency. He is also known to American security services under the name Muslin Dost. Spain arrested the Russians and the Turk on Wednesday, with Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz saying there are clear indications that the suspects were planning a terror attack in Spain or somewhere else in Europe. Reports quoted Yalcin as saying that he had met the other two in Turkey, and that they had come to Europe seeking asylum. The men are "extremely dangerous people," and one is a "very important operative in alQaeda's international structure," Diaz told AFP.
However, police found no documents confirming the information. Adamov and Magomedov were arrested on a bus heading for the French border, while Yalcin was detained in a flat located in southern province of Andaluca. The two Russians were taken to court early Sunday, escorted by masked police officers. Authorities suggest Adamov and Magomedov are al-Qaeda operatives, while the Turk is simply a facilitator for the notorious group. San Jose's Mount Hamilton, the Bay Area's tallest peak at more than 4,300 feet, helped spark the region's appeal for technology geeks when Lick Observatory was established at its summit in 1888, drawing the scientifically minded here. But three years later, Stanford University opened its doors, beginning a long-term, northward shift of Silicon Valley's innovation culture. "Looking at the history of Silicon Valley, the mother lode is Stanford and Palo Alto, and the rest flowed out into the alluvial plain," quipped San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed. "Eventually, we get some gold nuggets, too." His city's efforts to court startups got more challenging this year when the state killed redevelopment agencies; San Jose underwrote office space for a number of tech incubators. Now city officials are looking for new ways to join with those incubators, while preparing to open an Environmental Innovation Center on King Road to let young cleantech companies develop and demonstrate their wares. But Reed said San Jose's real bread and butter is in luring tech companies from the pricier north once they begin to grow. "We
have millions of square feet of space that's been vacant since the (dot-com) bust, and that's a huge asset," he said. His office trots out numbers showing that from 2007 to 2011, dozens of tech companies relocated to or expanded in San Jose, adding nearly 9,000 jobs. They include names like Palo Alto's Nanosolar and Redwood City's Zazzle. Mindful of that trend, Reed's San Francisco counterpart, Ed Lee, has worked to woo the startup crowd. Together with influential investor Ron Conway, Lee in January launched a nonprofit that aims to lure more tech outfits to town and forge new policies to keep them there. Under Lee's watch, Twitter last year cut a deal to avoid paying a 1.5 percent city payroll tax on new hires for the next six years. As part of the controversial pact -which reportedly will save the social media powerhouse $22 million -- Twitter and other startups looking to avoid the tax have to base themselves in dodgier pockets of the city's downtown, including the Tenderloin. Last week, Lee persuaded the board of supervisors to go even further and place on the fall ballot a measure that would replace the payroll tax -- which the mayor
said "punishes companies for creating new jobs" -- with a more broadly based tax on receipts that won't increase as fast when companies grow. While San Francisco's liberal wing has questioned Lee's devotion to the business community, the city's economic development department points up CBRE's figures as proof the tech-friendly approach is paying dividends. To be sure, San Francisco still faces a bragging-rights competition for the Startup Central title from Mountain View, which though much smaller is home to Google, top incubators like Y Combinator and Microsoft's diplomatic mission to Silicon Valley. Yet ironically, many say Google kicked off the current craze toward San Francisco. Santosh Jayaram was a senior manager at the search giant five years ago when it began running free, Wi-Fi-equipped employee buses between San Francisco and Mountain View. "They were busing 3,000 people every day," he recalled. "Then Yahoo( YHOO) started doing it, and it became this arms race." Freed from the hassles of commuting, techies could live in SILICON page 11

And because, unlike earlier generations of startups, today's Internet newbies don't need pricey wet labs or clean rooms, those busriding techies could later launch new companies in their own backyards. Derek Anderson, founder of entrepreneur networking group Startup Grind, argues there's yet another reason San Francisco has snatched Silicon Valley's mojo. With vacancy rates in Palo Alto and Mountain View barely above 2 percent, he said, hot startups like Pinterest are finding themselves practically forced to relocate. "There's no room in the freaking inn," he said. Not that there's much in San Francisco. CBRE notes that tech companies signed more than 2 million square feet of office space -- roughly equal to four Transamerica Pyramids -- in town during the first five months of this year. That puts the city well on
pace to shatter the 3 million square feet leased during all of 2011. And, according to the firm's research, there are still hundreds of companies seeking 4.5 million more square feet in San Francisco. Jayaram -- who's now co-founder of mobile-app-maker Daemonic Labs -- believes rising office and housing costs are dual threats to the city's digital domination. While his startup is based in San Francisco's trendy South Park neighborhood, about half its 14 employees are based in Argentina, where Jayaram describes personnel costs as "30 cents on the dollar." Hamid Soryan ended that drought on Sunday, and he might not be the only Iran ian to win a gold in London. Soryan, the five-time world champion, won his country's first gold medal in men's 55-kilogram, beating Rovshan Bayramov of Azerbaijan 2-0, 1-0. "I'm hoping that I made everybody happy back home," Soryan said. Iran has 30 overall medals in freestyle but had only two, a silver and a bronze, in GrecoRoman before Sunday. The Iranians also have a pair of GrecoRoman world champions in Omid Noroozi at 60 kilograms and Saeid Morad Abdvali at 66 kg, and both are considered the favorite in their respective classes. Iran TV airs confessions in murder of scientists - Washington Post

The TV showed pictures from a military garrison it said was a training camp outside Tel Aviv in Israel. It said the suspects took courses there, including how to place magnetic bombs on cars the method used in the killing of the scientists. Iran says the attacks are part of a covert campaign by Israel and the West to sabotage its nuclear program, which the U.S. and its allies suspect is aimed at producing nuclear weapons. Iran denies that. Irans intelligence chief, Heidar Moslehi, had promised recently to provide detailed TV pictures about the case. Iran has blamed Israels Mossad as well as the CIA and Britains MI6 for the assassinations, with support from some of Irans neighbors. The U.S. and Britain and denied involvement in the slayings. Israel has not commented. The TV said closed circuit cameras in a Tehran street
recorded one of the operations, providing clues for Irans intelligence agencies to identify and arrest the suspects. One of the suspects, Behzad Abdoli, claimed that he received training in Israel, along with several others. I entered Turkey and then was taken to Cyprus by ship. The assassination control room was in Tel Aviv, but it was receiving the orders from Washington and London, the TV report said. The TV report did not say if the 14 suspects have already stood trial or when they would be tried. In May, Iran hanged Majid Jamali Fashi, 24, who was sentenced to death for the 2010 killing of Tehran University physics professor Masoud Ali Mohammadi. Apple is in talks to acquire social commerce site The Fancy to further entrench its position in the growing e-commerce arena, sources tell the Business Insider. Backed by co-founders of Facebook and Twitter, the site is a Pinterest rival that allows users to make lists of things they find interesting. The goal of the acquisition, BI reports, is to better leverage the 400 million or so credit cards Apple has on file at its iTunes store. Apple CEO Tim Cook, who usually shies away from larger social-networking sites, reportedly started using The Fancy after meeting with the company's co-founder and CEO,
Joe Einhorn, at the Allen & Co.'s Sun Valley conference earlier this year. The market for social commerce has been red hot lately, and Pinterest has experienced phenomenal growth recently, doubling its number of daily unique visitors to 4 million in the first four months of this year, according to data released last month by social-media marketer Tamba. Although the 20-person startup is much smaller than rival Pinterest, The Fancy is "much farther along in linking its users to transactions," taking a 10 percent cut of purchases, BI reported. The Fancy sports a $100 million valuation after a $10 million round last fall that was led by PPR, the company behind Gucci.

Be A Bitch On Email, Or Be Emails Bitch

Ive long hated email. As someone with upwards of 5,000 unread messages at any given time, taking a quick moment to check email is like pushing hot pokers into my eyes. It makes me feel irresponsible and rude every time I see that massive number in bold, yet if I were to diligently read through each email Im sent, I would write zero TechCrunch articles per day. I would complete nothing but the communication and coordination for future, real tasks. This is thanks in large part to the actual content of messages. Sure, some startups are really great at the concise pitch, sending over three or four lines on their company and perhaps a screengrab, and asking if I want to know more. But most pitches, and most emails in general, are much longer than that. And the reason theyre longer? Courtesy. Email has replaced the old postal system in almost every case. Realtors and lawyers still send messengers with important documents to their clients, but most business communication is done over email. Yet still, most emails are filled with his, how are yous, and other general forms of courtesy. This is unnecessary. Were moving into a world where the fewer buttons you push, the better. And this isnt just about me and
my inbox full of pitches. I simply use pitches as an example because most emails I get are pitches, but the same rules follow in almost all of my emails, whether theyre with major corporations about review loaner devices, or with some TechCrunch staffers that I speak with less regularly. And Id bet good money that the majority of your emails consist of the same courteous small-talk. A 2011 study shows that most employees spend half of their time at work on email. Half! And Id venture to say that half of that time (so 25 percent of your work time) is spent filtering the real information out of a sea of kind words and courtesy. Now, as a reporter I receive an excessive amount of emails, but I think that overstuffed inboxes are a more ubiquitous problem. Just think about your daily emails: there are Facebook and Twitter notifications, the usual spam/ newsletter rubbish, Mom and Dad, friends and family, random forwards, and what I like to call personal/business (stuff like banking emails, communication with realtors, doctors offices, etc.) And thats just personal email. Now throw in your work email. Its a lot of content to juggle, especially when those useful nuggets of necessary information are drowned by small talk and common courtesy. Maybe wining and dining a client or an in-person meeting is the right time for schmoozing. Hell
a conference call may even be an appropriate place for the occasional Hiya, hows the wife? But when it involves my computer, a place where work is to be done, I need email (and all forms of online communication for that matter) to be as concise as possible. I mean, studies show that people stoned off their booties do better on an IQ test than those distracted by ringing phones and incoming emails. In fact, it takes 45 minutes for the mind to regain focus on a task after being interrupted by a distraction, and most emails (and most of the content within emails) is a distraction. Thats why people would rather send or receive a 160-character text message than make a phone call or send an email. Time is saved, and time is precious. Heres an example of a pitch Id receive on email: Hi Jordan, how are you? I have been reading your past few articles and absolutely love TechCrunch. I noticed you cover a lot of wedding apps, and was wondering what you think of the space? Isnt it exciting, how tech is disrupting such a valuable and huge industry? The service lets brides and grooms consult with real wedding planners online for a much cheaper price, cutting out the time and work of meeting in person and checking out real-life

SMS, the newer form of communication, is more efficient than email. In matters of personal relationships, this is seen as a negative progression, as kids are growing up feeling more comfortable communicating in a digital world than a real one. But in professional matters, the quicker, more concise, and ultimately more efficient form of communication should be preferred. Time is money. Which brings me to Twitter. Twitter lops a full 20 characters off of the message. This usually gets rid of any introduction, Hi, my name is In fact, we only @mention people because thats the only way to alert them directly, and if you could tweet to someone without using up characters on their handle, you would. Granted, with a tweet, you have even fewer characters to hook the receiver, but the receiver also has no excuse to not check out the link, or startup, or assignment, or whatever. Countdown to Mars: Thoughts from a NASA Curiosity engineer

This weekend we will see Curiosity attempt a dramatic Mars landing inside of Gale Crater. Its mission will be to study the Martian rocks to determine how they were formed and try to answer whether conditions on Mars once could have supported life in its most simple form tiny, microbial cells. The rovers intended destination after landing is a series of layered rock outcrops on the slopes of Mount Sharp. These layers were spied from orbit only a few years ago and appear to provide a geological record of Mars spanning hundreds of millions of years that Curiosity can spend months touring and reading back to us on Earth. With Curiositys hypersonic entry guidance, this is the first Mars rover that could safely land inside Gale and reach these layers. As interest and enthusiasm mounts for one of the greatest exploration missions of the last decade, it is worth remembering what it took to get here and consider what should be next. Weve been fortunate to witness a golden age of Mars exploration over the last fifteen years of orbiters, landers, and rovers. The successful international missions of Mars Global Surveyor,
Pathfinder, Mars Odyssey, Mars Express, Spirit, Opportunity, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and Phoenix have helped us follow
the water. The assumption, given our experience here on Earth, is that where there was water on Mars
there may also have been life. The probes orbiting Mars have been outfitted with a dazzling array of sensors and cameras to identify

One minute later, thrusters will fire to stop the entry vehicle's 2rpm rotation and the spacecraft will re-orient itself heat shield forward and slam into the discernible atmosphere at 10:24 p.m. at an altitude of about 78 miles and a velocity of 13,200 mph. At that point, it will be about 390 miles -- seven minutes - from touchdown in Gale Crater. The Mars Science Laboratory is the first spacecraft to attempt a guided entry on another planet. To control its lift, which will allow Curiosity's flight computer to make a pinpoint landing, two 165pound tungsten weights will be ejected just before entry to change the spacecraft's center of mass. During hypersonic flight, thruster firings will control the orientation of the vehicle's "lift vector" to compensate for actual atmospheric conditions as it precisely controls its path toward Gale Crater. The belly of the Curiosity rover can be seen after heat shield jettison as the spacecraft slows under a huge parachute.(Credit: NASA graphic) About one minute and 15 seconds after entry, the spacecraft's heat shield will experience peak temperatures of up to 3,800 degrees Fahrenheit as atmospheric friction provides 90 percent of the spacecraft's deceleration. Ten seconds after peak heating, that deceleration will peak at 10 to 15 times the force of Earth's gravity at sea level. Plummeting toward Mars, the rover's flight computer will
continue to steer the spacecraft, firing thrusters to make subtle changes in the flight path as required by atmospheric density and other variables. The guided entry phase of flight will come to an end about four minutes after entry. At 10:28 p.m., six 55-pound weights will be ejected to move the center of mass back to the central axis of the spacecraft to help ensure stability when its braking parachute deploys. Seconds later, at an altitude of about seven miles and a velocity of some 900 miles per hour, the huge chute will unfurl and inflate to a diameter of 70 feet, delivering a 65,000-pound jolt to the still-supersonic spacecraft. The heat shield will be jettisoned about 24 seconds later, at an altitude of about five miles and a descent rate of 280 mph, exposing the rover's undercarriage to view. A sophisticated radar altimeter then will begin measuring altitude and velocity, feeding those data to the rover's flight computer while a high-definition camera begins recording video of the remaining few minutes of the descent. During the final hundred feet of entry, descent and landing, the Curiosity rover will be lowered from its rocket-powered "sky crane" directly to the surface of Mars.(Credit: NASA graphic) Six minutes after entry, now one mile up and falling toward the surface at roughly 180 mph, the rover and its rocket pack will be cut away from the parachute and backshell, falling like a rock

An instant later, eight hydrazineburning rocket engines, two at each corner of the descent stage, will ignite to stabilize and quickly slow the craft's vertical velocity to less than 2 mph. About 16 seconds before touchdown, at an altitude of just under 70 feet, Curiosity will be lowered on the end of a 25-foot-long bridle made up of three cables. As the support and data cables unreel, the rover's six motorized wheels will snap into position for touchdown. Finally, seven minutes after the entry began and descending at a gentle 1.7 mph, Curiosity's wheels will touch the surface of Mars. Radio confirmation of landing is expected at 10:31 a.m., about 3 p.m. local time on Mars, but atmospheric conditions and other factors could result in a touchdown 40 seconds or so to either side of that target. Whatever the actual timing, Curiosity's flight computer, sensing "weight on wheels," will send commands to fire small explosive devices that will sever the cables connecting the rover to the still-firing propulsion system. Its work complete, the descent stage will fly away to a crash landing at least 500 feet away and possibly twice that far. Engineers on Earth, meanwhile, will be awaiting confirmation of a successful touchdown, relying on NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft to relay UHF telemetry from Curiosity directly back to Earth in near realtime. Odyssey
experienced an orientation control problem in June, but engineers were confident the aging spacecraft would re-position itself as required to receive entry, descent and landing telemetry from Curiosity. "One of those is a message from the spacecraft that says 'I touched down, and this is the velocity I touched down at and where I think I am.' "The rover has an inertial measurement unit, a gyro and an accelerometer set, and we look at that stream to say the rover's not moving at all, that signal says 'I think I'm on the ground and I'm not moving.' And the third is, we wait a safe period of time and confirm we're getting continuous UHF (radio) transmission. And frankly, that's there to make sure the descent stage hasn't fallen back down on top of the rover. When all three of those signals are positive, we declare touchdown confirmation." The first photograph from the surface, a low-resolution thumbnail image from a hazardavoidance camera on the rear of the lander, will be ready for
transmission within four minutes or so of landing. But Odyssey may be over the horizon by that point. If so, the image will be relayed back to Earth one orbit later, around 12:30 a.m. If Odyssey's orientation cannot be precisely controlled for any reason, engineers could have to wait up to eight hours or more for landing confirmation. Curiosity will beam some data directly back to JPL during its descent, but Earth will drop below the martian horizon after parachute deploy and direct communications will be interrupted. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter will be directly overhead during the descent and will record Curiosity's UHF telemetry throughout the landing sequence. But unlike Odyssey, MRO was not designed for "bent-pipe" direct relay to Earth and it would take about eight hours for engineers at JPL to receive and decode the recorded data. Regardless of how long it takes for landing confirmation to arrive, Curiosity represents "one of the greatest feats in planetary exploration ever, not to mention just this decade," said McCuistion. "I think it shows the leadership that the United States has had in the exploration of Mars, and our success rate has been pretty darn good recently." But the stakes are high and failure is clearly an option. "If it fails, I think we need to know how it failed," McCuistion CURIOSITY page 26

Mars is right next door and formed the same time as the Earth did, but how did Mars come to be so different? And despite its differences, did life exist on Mars too? In ways we can never predict, we are all enlightened and benefit from discoveries in the jungles or the deep oceans of Earth, the microscopic intricacies of the human genome, the elusive Higgs particle, and delving into the puzzles and opportunities that space exploration presents. Besides the science, why do we do this? Why spend the years of dedicated effort, the long days away from our families, the meticulous designing, building, and testing? Why do we feel that emotional rush when we attempt a nearly impossible task, or when we watch someone make such an attempt? Theodore Roosevelt offered a fitting answer. Far
better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even through checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat. It is no coincidence that as Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineers monitor Curiosity on its Mars approach and landing this weekend, only a few miles away the Mars Society is convening its 15th international conference. Enthusiastic people from all over the world and of various professions are discussing how we should reach and perhaps settle Mars this century. If you want to dare mightily, I cannot think of anything more challenging or fitting for the 21st century. But getting humans to Mars is technically very difficult, and while we dont yet know how to do it we have a few promising ideas. Curiosity had to give up the proven airbag technique because of its weight, and human missions will be much more massive. Curiosity has a few things important to a future human mission: it will demonstrate a hypersonic guided entry to land close to a site, and radiation sensors to inform what environment a crew and vehicle would withstand throughout the whole mission."We have never been more prepared than we are right now"
There is so much more to figure out and test. The recent Mars program has been set up to test things incrementally, to build off of what has been done before. Before we bring people to and from Mars, we can bring something from Mars back home to study. Curiosity has an incredible miniature laboratory tucked inside of it, but it can only carry so much instrumentation with it. We can use the orbiters, what Curiosity and other landers find, to help us pick out the rocks that will tell us the most about Mars. We have never been more prepared than we are right now to mount a sample return mission or begin the preparations for a human expedition. The question facing the American administration and Congress is whether to support one now, in a time where NASA is seeing flat-lined budgets with other high-profile, billion dollar programs such as Webb Space Telescope, the heavy-lift launch vehicle, and the Orion human exploration spacecraft wrestling for those funds. As America is dealing with large budget deficits, it is unlikely that NASA will receive enough funding to successfully finish all of these this decade, let alone a Mars sample return mission. With Congress focusing on issues of the magnitude of trillions of dollars it will be difficult to get their attention for programs on the
order of billions. Expect no decision on anything of significance until after the American presidential and congressional elections this fall. If Mars exploration is to continue, public support is very important so that the politicians can accurately gauge the interest and the benefits. There have been two grand periods of exploration of Mars. The first was led by a vanguard of American and Soviet probes in the 1960s and 1970s, radioing back amazing pictures of the largest volcanoes and canyons found in our solar system. That first period, suffering many failures as we learned how to reach to Mars, culminated in the successful Viking orbiters and landers. And then, Mars was left alone it seemed lifeless to our 1970s technology. The American Mars exploration team that had pulled off so many successes over those dozen years, that had engineered how to land safely on Mars, was scattered. Much of the talent and engineering knowledge from those early days of Mars exploration was lost. Todays period of exploration had to assemble a new team, tempered by the successes and failures of recent missions, to attempt something as audacious as Curiosity. We find ourselves again at the crossroads for Mars exploration.

Mother of 'Happy Mac' graphic to testify in Apple v. Samsung

Apple lawyers are reaching back into the company's history for help against Samsung. The companies are engaged in a patent dispute that could be worth billions of dollars to the winner. Apple today released the names of the next seven people it intends to call to the stand starting tomorrow (the names are listed below). Most of the marquee names; Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing and Scott Forstall, the company's senior vice president of IOS software, have already testified. Still left up, however, is Susan Kare, the artist and graphic designer who created the interface elements and graphics for the Mac OS in the early 1980s. Kare was behind some of the Mac's trademark images: the "Happy Mac" graphic that appeared when the computer was booting up. Her designs have influenced graphics to this day, including the Mac trash can. After leaving Apple, Kare again went to work for Steve Jobs at NeXT Computer, which was later acquired by Apple. After leaving

Apple is expected to ask Kare to talk about the designs of Samsung's accused devices when compared to three of Apple's design patents covering the iPhone, as well as the subtitles of user interface graphics between the two. Each side has 25 hours of court time to make their case, and both sides were allowed to pick 50 witnesses. As per the court's orders, each company must release a "rolling list" of upcoming witnesses. Justin Denison Denison has been Samsung's chief strategy officer for the past four years, and joined the company after holding a similar position at Nokia. Denison was called to the stand not long before the proceedings ended on Friday. Apple tried to pin him down about how Samsung managers used the iPhone as a blueprint for their phones. Denison scored points for his side by nothing that some of the similarities between the phones exist because they were just common sense, such as rounded corners (more durable) and flat screens (cheaper to make than curved glass). Even decidedly niche events like the Apple v. Samsung weigh heavily on some peoples minds. And, you know, some people are only concerned with whats going to be on television tonight. Theres nothing wrong with that either. Theres also a slight sexiness problem. Now, putting a man on the moon that was something that really brought people together. If youll forgive me for sentimentalizing a moment I (nor many of you) werent a part of, that day in July 1969 pushed us all forward, if only just a little bit. Perhaps naturally, landing a carsized robot on the surface of another planet just doesnt seem as weighty or substantial, despite the sheer complexity of whats involved and what it could lead to. We didnt put our footprints on Mars. We havent put lives on the line. Not yet, anyway. So, yes, there are plenty of reasons why people cant be bothered to care about rover
wheeling its way around a planet thats roughly 35 million miles away. But if you find yourself feeling a twinge of curiosity about that relatively tiny machine born of lofty ambitions, heres why you should care about what happens tonight. First off, humanity is reaching out to plop (fine, another) something of its own creation onto another world. Just think about that for a minute. Louis C.K. has a great bit (that many of you have probably already seen, so indulge me) about how a guy he sat next to on a plane was moaning about flaky in-flight WiFi while he was encased in a streamlined metal tube powering its way through the friggin sky at 600 miles per hour. The point is, theres a tendency for people to get wrapped up in the earthbound, and its always nice for a change of pace. Whats more, with Curiosity, NASAs not just reaching toward the heavens its planning to learn as much as it can from them. You have to admit, theres something more than a little wonderful about that. Theres untold value in what we can learn from Curiosity, though the information the rover is able to
glean may not be immediately useful. Whats the point in learning about Mars past? To expand upon the corpus of human knowledge! To understand our crazy, hectic, beautiful universe even a fraction of a percent better. Even so, those findings could have a practical impact on future Mars missions, both those envisioned by NASA and those in the growing commercial space movement. Will this ridiculous landing scheme work? If it does, you can bet someone will try it again some day. Of course, not every company in that field needs the coaxing. SpaceX founder Elon Musk seems to look at Mars much in the same way its a goal to be met because its there, waiting for us to set foot on it. Thats always been a goal of SpaceX, Musk recently told the L.A. Times.Were hoping to develop the technology to do that in probably 12 to 15 years. And thats just one facet of his ambitions for mankinds spacefaring future. Musk said back in March that one of his companys ambitions was to establish a longterm colony on the red planet. With the next giant science fiction blockbuster Total Recall (2012) headed to theaters this summer (out now, in fact), SlashGear took the opportunity to speak with Kate Beckinsale on her role as the main villain. As it turns out, Beckinsale doesnt just find herself in a series of action movies because shes custombuilt for the role, its got a lot to do with her love for science fiction, fantasy, and the whole action genre as well. Have a peek at why Beckinsales four brothers had a lot to do with why youll be seeing her play Lori Quaid on the big screen this week. Down in Los Angeles last month SlashGear got to speak with each of the stars of the 2012 version of Total Recall as well as the director Len Wiseman. With Wisemans interview revealing that he loved and still loves science fiction in a big way, it seemed only natural to ask Beckinsale the same question Are you a science fiction fan, and was sci-fi a bit part of your life growing up? Sidenote: Wiseman is married to Beckinsale, so we had to expect SOME form of connection. No getting away from sci-fi when your husband is an die-hard fan

Kho is an engineer at Samsung and worked on the company's integrated software. Per court filings, Apple aims to ask Kho about his role in the creation of software code for a bounce back effect, something Apple has a utility patent for and is accusing Samsung of infringing. According to deposition, Kho says Samsung had an internal project called "the glow effect" or "edge glow," something to show users they reached the end of a scrollable area. Apple believes this same behavior is covered in its own patent. Peter Bressler Bressler was the president of the Industrial Designers Society of America between 1989 to 1990, and is the founder and board chair at product design firm Bresslergroup Inc. He's also currently an adjunct associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania. According to court documents, Bressler has been an expert witness in seven trials covering utility patents and trade dress claims. He's also listed as the
author, or co-author on 73 patents, many of which are design patents. In a redacted court filing, Bressler said he was called on by Apple specifically to talk about the three design patents it says Samsung is infringing, including the company's tablet design patent. Susan Kare See above. Russell Winer Winer is the chair of the Department of Marketing at the Stern School of Business for New York University. According to his bio, Winer has authored more than 70 papers in marketing on a variety of topics, including consumer choice, marketing research methodology, marketing planning, advertising, and pricing. He is expected to testify about the strength of Apple's trade dress and that Samsung's products are sold and compete in similar marketing channels to Apple's. Hal Poret Poret is an expert at survey research for advertising and trademark. Apple said in court documents that he will present evidence of a survey that indicates
consumers associate the iPad trade dress with Apple. Kent Van Liere Van Liere provides research in statistics and survey research for litigation. His areas of expertise include product liability, false advertising, trademark infringement, labor, and antitrust. He is expected to discuss a survey he conducted that concluded consumers are likely to associate Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Apple in a post-sale environment. Ravin Balakrishnan Balakrishnan is a professor in the department of computer science at the University of Toronto, where he also got his Ph.D. in computer science. Balakrishnan co-founded Bump Technologies, the makers of 3D desktop software BumpTop, which Google bought up in 2010. Apple had Balakrishnan evaluate Samsung's devices against Apple's to see if the software was violating patented software code. Much of the publicly-available deposition of Balakrishnan centered around Apple's bounce back list patent.
Karan Singh Singh is an associate professor of computer science at the University of Toronto, where he helped direct a graphics and human computer interaction laboratory. He also consults with various companies about computer graphics and design industries. According to documents Apple filed with the court, Singh will testify that Samsung is infringing some of Apple's patents relating to such features as "tap-to-zoom," and "scroll vs. gesture." When you pick up a nextgeneration iPhone this Autumn, you may very well be working with a brand new integrated system for online sales of all things fancy and not just digital media. Its been tipped to Business Insider writer Owen Thomas that Apples meeting between their own CEO Tim Cook and startup The Fancy CEO Joe Einhorn earlier this year started something beautiful between the two companies. Now were to understand that The Fancy is at a point in its development 20 employees strong, earning $10,000 USD a day in sales from products promoted on their network that Apple will be prepared to pick them up. Acquire them, in other words. This information is tied to elements of interest in The Fancy in its supposed edge over the still very much larger competing group Pinterest. Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt

I just finished Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt by Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco. It is superb, and I've spent a fair amount of time typing in passages from the book below in order to capture some of its theme. The "me" of twenty years ago wouldn't be caught dead reading a book like this. It is, after all, an unflinching assasination of our present capitalist system. As a younger person, I was wholeheartedly (and more than a little ignorantly) devoted to a dogeat-dog, lassiez-faire capitalist system. And, in my adult life, I have lived that way, at least inasmuch as I created, built, and sold a successful business and have, before, during, and after that time, been a very active participant in the financial markets (both by way of trading as well as writing). Experience and observation have moderated my views, however. At the outset I will say that I still regard capitalism as the most proper, natural, and constructive economic system, but I'm a much firmer believer in a modified version - - consistently-regulated with a distribution of wealth more akin to the 1970s than the present day - - than I ever imagined I would be. This passage from the preface of the book captures the pages that follow nicely:
The ruthless hunt for profit creates a world where everything and everyone is expendable. Nothing is sacred. It has blighted inner cities, turned the majestic Appalachian Mountains into a blasted moonscape of poisoned water, soil, and air. It has forced workers into a downward spiral of falling wages and mounting debt until laborers in agricultural fields and sweatshops work in conditions that replicate slavery. It has impoverished our working class and ravaged the middle class. And it has enriched a tiny global elite that has no loyalty to the nation-state. These corporations, if we use the language of patriotism, are traitors. Days of Destruction take the rather novel approach of combining superb journalism (Chris Hedges) with world-class graphic art (Joe Sacco). It is part graphic novel and part diatribe. And, I need to tell you right now, this is not a feel-good book, and the balance of words and art work well. The Walt Whitman piece, I Sit and Look Out, is offered within these pages to embellish the picture further: I sit and look out upon all the sorrows of the world, and upon all oppression and shame; I hear secret convulsive sobs from young men, at anguish with neglected, gaunt, desperate; themselves, I see the wife misused by her remorseful after deeds done; husband--I see the treacherous I see, in low life, the mother seducer of young women; misused by her children, dying, I mark the ranklings of jealousy
and unrequited love, attempted to be hid-I see these sights on the earth; I see the workings of battle, pestilence, tyranny--
I see martyrs and prisoners; I observe a famine at sea-I observe the sailors casting lots who shall be kill'd, to preserve the lives of the rest; I observe the slights and degradations cast by arrogant persons upon laborers, the poor, and upon negroes, and the like; All these--All the meanness and agony without end, I sitting, look out upon, See, hear, and am silent. And if you need any more convincing as to the non-fuzzyfeelings you will have while reading it, here is another poem offered - a brief haiku in the chapter about Camden, New Jersey: The sack of kittens Sinking in the icy creek Increases the cold There are several broad regions of the United States covered in the book, including the Indian reservations of South Dakota; the mean streets of Camden; the wretched lives of the producepickers in Southern Florida; and the "moonscape" of West Virginia's coal country. It is this last area that includes a talk with Larry Gibson, an activist in West Virginia who grew up there, had to leave for a while due to family poverty, and has returned to try to fight for the region's sake. He says the following, which is perhaps my favorite section of the entire book: DAYS page 33

Living here as a boy, I wasnt any different than anybody else. First time I knew I was poor was when I went to Cleveland and went to school They taught me I was poor. I traded all this for a strip of green I saw when I walking the street. And I was poor? How ya gonna get a piece of green grass between the sidewalk and the street, and they gonna tell me Im poor. I thought I was the luckiest kid in the world, with nature. I could walk through the forest. I could hear the animals. I could hear the woods talk to me. Everywhere I looked there was life. I could pick my own apples or cucumbers. I could eat the berries and pawpaws. I love pawpaws. And they gooseberries. Now there is no life there. Only dust. I had a pigeon and when Id come out of the house, no matter where I went, he flew over my head or sat on my shoulder. I had a hawk I named Fred, I had a bobcat and a threelegged fox that got caught in a trap. I wouldnt trade that childhood for all the fancy fire trucks and toys the other kids had. I have a tremendous amount of respect for that point of view. There was a time in my life I craved a lot of stuff. There was a time I thought rich people were rich because they were sharper and harder-working than the rest of us. I've certainly learned otherwise. I've learned that "stuff" is boring and unfulfilling. And I've learned that some rich people - - and I've known a lot, including a couple of
billionaires - - can at times be some of the biggest dumb-fucks you'd ever encounter. One in particular thought he was some kind of genius, when in fact he was simply born into a rich family and was too blinkered to recognize that his accidental circumstance had no bearing on his (dim) wit. The chapter goes on with another activist......... Gunnoe is a thin woman with curly black hair. She is part Cherokee. Her vocal opposition to the coal companies, like Larry Gibsons, has engendered the fury of many of her neighbors, who fear the loss of the coal industry will mean and end to any viable employment. One of her dogs was shot dead and left in the parking lot where her children catch the school bus. Another dog was shot and killed while tied up in the back of her house. The gas tank to her truck was filled with sand, requiring $1,200 in repairs. Her children have been taunted at school as tree huggers. She has erected a six-foot protective fence around her house that she calls my cage. But she says that even for the miners who blast away the mountains, the destruction can be overwhelming. I figure even if there's no such thing as hell, the universe would have conjured one up for whatever low-lifes would stoop to killing a dog (it should be mentioned that Mr. Gibson's dog was also killed, and his current dog was hanged, but he was able to save him in time). Humans I
can do without. Dogs, on the other hand, have no business being harmed. Particularly by "people." Gibson again: Its a sacrifice zone. Its so the rest of the country can have electric toothbrushes and leave the lights on all night in parking lots for used cars and banks lit up all night long and shit like that. We have been a national sacrifice zone. Hell, that phrase was created thirty-five, forty years ago. Now its terminal. There is no way to stop it. I havent had any hope for a long time. But the only reason I keep going is, why the hell not? Im going to die. Shit, might as well hold my head up. I dont want Bill Raney, the president of the Coal Association, to be able to tell his lies without somebody saying, Bill, thats shit, thats not true. These corporations are going to strip the whole country. If you have this reality, then you become a guerilla. You blow up the damn thing. I cant go to there, because they will put me in penitentiary, and I dont want to go there. I know they would catch me eventually. Hedges' training in divinity (his father was a minister, and he himself got his Masters degree from Harvard) is present, although not heavy-handed, throughout the book. But his firm Chrstian beliefs certainly don't lead you to a polite, hands-in-lap, gentle list of suggestions in the final chapter. The man is Pissed. Off. And he uses the (presently inert) Occupy movement as the
shining example of what should be happening in America: There comes a moment in all popular uprisings when the dead ideas and decayed systems, which only days before seemed unassailable, are exposed and discredited by a population that once stood fearful and supine. This spark occurred on September 17., 2011, in New York City when a few hundred activists, who were easily rebuffed by police in their quixotic attempt to physically occupy Wall Street, regrouped in Zuccotti Park, four blocks away. They were disorganized at first, unsure of what to do, not even convinced they had achieved anything worthwhile, but they had unwittingly triggered a global movement of resistance that would reverberate across the country and the capitals of Europe. The uneasy status quo, effectively imposed for decades by the elites, was shattered. Another narrative of power took shape. The revolution began. Hedges goes on: The American dream, we now know, is a lie. We will all be sacrificed. The virus of corporate abuse the perverted belief that only corporate profit matters has spread to outsource our jobs, cut the budgets of our schools, close our libraries, and plague our communities with foreclosures and unemployment. This virus has brought with it a security and surveillance state that seeks to keep us all on a reservation. No one is immune. The suffering of
the other, of the Native American, the African American in the inner city, the unemployed coal miner, or the Hispanic produce picker is universal. They went first. We are next. The indifference we showed to the plight of the underclass, in Biblical terms our neighbor, haunts us. We failed them, and in doing so we failed ourselves. We were accomplices in our own demise. Revolt is all we have left. It is the only hope. Hedges doesn't agitate for a particular candidate; he doesn't suggest a new set of regulations; he doesn't ask that Blankfein be brought to trial. He wants a revolution, not unlike that would swept away the Communists from Eastern Europe. He states: The preconditions for successful revolution are: + discontent that affects nearly all social classes; + widespread feelings of entrapment and despair; + unfulfilled expectations; + a unified solidarity in opposition to a tiny power elite; + a refusal by scholars and thinkers to continue to defend the actions of the ruling class; + an inability of government to respond to the basic needs of citizens; + a steady loss of will within the power elite itself together with defections from the inner circle a crippling isolation that leaves the power elite without any allies or outside support; + a financial crisis DAYS page 35

So the city closed the plan to new employees and later passed a parcel tax to pay for the pension. Yet today, that pension remains the source of one of Oakland's biggest headaches. It's a generous plan that awards its retirees and widows - who now number 1,086 - raises to match up to two-thirds of the pay of the current-day workforce. But the city's costs ballooned because it never adequately contributed to the pension fund, relied on borrowing for years to give itself holidays from pension payments and watched investments go south. The result of the borrowing is that the pension, known as the Police and Fire Retirement System, has cost Oakland taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars more than it should have. In 2010, City Auditor Courtney Ruby found Oakland spent $250 million more on the pension than it would have if the city had simply paid into the pension - and ZOMBIFIED page 37

speculators loot and pillage. Our dear friend, Lloyd Blankfein - - the man doing God's work, remember? - - is often cited in Days of Destruction. He is held up as just about the closest thing to the anti-Christ as can be imagined, almost directly responsible for the murder of millions. The rogues gallery of Wall Street crooks such as Lloyd Blankfein at Goldman Sachs; Howard Milstein at New York Private Bank & Trust; the media tycoon Rupert Murdoch; David and Charles, the Koch brothers; and Jamie Dimon at JPMorgan Chase & Co. no doubt think the Occupy movement has passed. They think it is back to the business of harvesting what is left of America to swell their personal and corporate fortunes. But they have no concept of what is happening around them. They are as mystified and clueless about these uprisings as the courtiers at Versailles or the Forbidden City, or the inner sanctums of the communist elites in Eastern Europe, who never understood until the very last days that their world was collapsing. The political philosopher Sheldon Wolin uses the term inverted totalitarianism in his book Democracy Incorporated to describe our political system. In inverted totalitarianism, the sophisticated technologies of corporate control, intimidation, and mass manipulation, which far
surpass those employed by previous totalitarian states, are effectively masked by the glitter, noise, and abundance of a consumer society. Political participation and civil liberties are gradually surrendered. Corporations, hiding behind this smokescreen, devour us from the inside out. They have no allegiance to the country. The novel 1984 is also an important touchstone in Days of Destruction, and Orwell is quoted frequently as a fount of truth. We, like those who opposed the long night of communism, no longer have any mechanisms within the formal structures of power that will protect or advance our rights. We, too, have undergone a coup detat carried out not by the large stone-faced leaders of a monolithic Communist Party, but by our largely anonymous corporate overlords. George Orwell wrote that all tyrannies rule through fraud and force, but that once the fraud is exposed they must rely exclusively on force. We have now entered that era of naked force. There are no excuses left. Either you join the revolt or you stand on the wrong side of history. You either obstruct through civil disobedience, the only way left to us, the plundering by the criminal class on Wall Street, and accelerated destruction of the ecosystem that sustains the human species, or become the passive enabler of a monstrous
evil. You either taste, feel, and smell the intoxication of freedom and revolt, or sink into the miasma of despair and apathy. You are either a rebel or a slave. The way you react to this book depends a great deal on who you are and what your experiences in life have been so far, particularly with respect to your own financial and personal security. I found the book partly inspiring, partly infuriating, but very readable. One of the few things the United States still has going for it - - for now, at least - - is freedom of expression, and I'm glad a book like this is available to all who care to be more aware than their fellow countrymen, and I'm grateful to live in a place where I can be permitted to offer my favorite passages from the book and encourage you to read the whole thing yourself. From the WSJ: Knight Capital Group Inc. continued talks Sunday morning aimed at a deal that would allow the company to avert bankruptcy and open for business Monday morning, according to people familiar with the matter. The discussions followed all-day meetings at Knight on Saturday as
the hobbled brokerage sought to negotiate a transaction that would provide long-term funding, the people said. A software error at Knight last Wednesday caused millions of errant trades that the Jersey City, N.J.-based firm later said would cost it $440 million. On Thursday, Knight arranged short-term funding that allowed it to operate on Friday. Knight needed the funding in place to be sure it could meet margin requirements, a necessary step in clearing trades at the heart of the firm's brokerage business. Knight operates with two types of loans, short-term credit lines to fund daily trading and $300 million of syndicated loans for general corporate purposes, according to public filings. Several hedge funds have approached Knight about refinancing the syndicated loans if necessary, other people said. It wasn't clear whether any such deal would happen, and the firm was also making bankruptcy
preparations in case an agreement falls through. The problem with Knight is that this is not a simple refinancing in a (Z/N)IRP environment: that could have been achieved in no time at all. In this case, it means providing additional capital to plug already incurred balance sheet losses, and shortfalls, that amount to more than the company's entire cash balance. That would mean not only cramming down everyone else on the balance sheet, but finding new unencumbered hard, money-good assets that can be pledged against new cash. Alas, very much like Europe, Knight just does not have these. Instead, anyone interested in the firm's existing assets will likely wait until fair value impairments wipe out its equity cap and impair its debt for a "fresh start", at which point any incremental debt will provide operation funding. Just like the Barclays take under of Lehman's North America brokerage even as
the rest of the firm remained as a bad bank. In other words: a bankruptcy filing. If this is the ritualistic sacrifice that has to be made in order to get someone within the regulatory staff to finally do something about the persistent threat that is HFT, so be it. All of this could have been avoided a long time ago ago if the SEC actually understood what it was doing and had any idea of how broken the market was, and if the SEC was not coopted by the same HFT interests that have made amockery of stock trading. Last month, the majority of the Oakland City Council, at the urging of Mayor Jean Quan's administration, voted to borrow money once again to cover the pension bill - $210 million in new pension bonds that will cost another $105 million in interest over the next 14 years. If the city hadn't borrowed the money, it would have been forced to take $38.5 million from its roughly $400 million general fund to pay for the pension this year. Such a move would have required deep cuts to city services, which already have taken a hit due to the slumping economy, state budget cuts and redevelopment shutdown. Wipe out parks, libraries "If we had to pay this money this year and the next couple of years, the cuts would imperil our Police Department as well as completely wipe out our libraries and parks," said Councilwoman Pat Kernighan. Kernighan learned nothing from Stockton, San Bernardino, Miami, or Detroit. Nor did Kernighan even learn anything from prior history in Oakland. Borrowing has already wrecked Oakland and this complete dunce wants to do more of it. The only solution that has a chance is for Oakland to declare bankruptcy. Instead Kernighan voted to kick the can down the road one more time. Oakland Headed for Bankruptcy Oakland will not be in a better position in a few years. I confidently predict bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is the only method cities can use to correct absurd pension promises made to police, fire, and teachers' unions. Advice to Unions My beef is not with those lowest on the totem pole and their small $15,000 pensions. Instead, I propose those with the largest pensions should take the bulk of the hit. Police Chief Tom Morris lasted 8 months and will now receive a $204,000 annual pension. Morris deserves nothing, zero.
My advice to unions is to negotiate with cities in advance of bankruptcy or some judge will come along and do something like slash pensions across the board by 50% as happened in Rhode Island. Across the board compromises give those like Morris far more than they deserve at the expense of hundreds of workers getting pensions barely enough to live on. Why A Mitt Romney Stock Market Rally Is Never Going To Happen

Morgan Stanley strategist Adam Parker (who is pretty bearish these days) recently said that one thing that might cause a stock market rally is the expectation that Mitt Romney will win the election. The idea of a Romney Rally is easy to comprehend. After all, Romney would be more likely to hold the line on tax increases, and more likely to get Republicans to solve the fiscal cliff crisis in short order. An Obama victory means a gigantic battle over taxes, spending, and the debt ceiling coming at the end of the year, creating the kind of risks that the stock market hates. But the idea of a Romney Rally happening between now and the election doesn't make logical sense.
The problem is that a Romney victory isn't going to feel inevitable unless the economy/ stock market start to turn south between now and early November. As long as markets are going up, it's hard to see a total collapse on sentiment towards Obama. People love to talk about
"narratives" and the candidates' various problems, but look, the sense that Obama is going to win seems to be at a high-level right now (see: The Daily Beast on the possible Obama landslide), and not coincidentally, stocks have just made a several week high. For more evidence that the stock market and the prospects of an
Obama victory are intimately related, h ere's a look at InTrade's odds of an Obama victory. Note how closely it aligns with the chart above, as it bottomed in early June, and has been rallying since. A believe in Romney's inevitability isn't going to emerge unless.... things collapse again,
and if that happens, then the Romney Rally is undermined. So baring some huge outside factor that changes the election, but which doesn't affect the economy, the idea that you should buy stocks because of Romney probably winning doesn't make much sense. One final note: This isn't saying anything about who will actually win. It's certainly possible that Romney will win the election, even if the economy doesn't turn down. It's just hard to see how this would be seen as "inevitable" between now and the election. And of course, this is saying nothing about what the stock market will do after Romney wins (if he does). to be politically strategic and personally protective. God's Word is very honest about how broken the world we live in actually is. This honesty is meant by God to lovingly help us to be aware and prepared as we live and minister with one another between the already and the not yet, waiting for the ultimate restoration of everything. But there's something else. Unrealistic expectations cause each of us, even those of us in ministry, to live more independently and selfsufficiently than we ever should. In reality, every pastor is yet in need of daily rescuing, forgiving, and empowering grace. We need that grace because every pastor is a person in the middle of his sanctification, and therefore, not yet free from the presence and power of sin. This means that, moment by moment, those of us in ministry still need to be rescued from us! Follow us Trouble Will Come We also need the grace of God so that we'll be able to love the weak and failing people whom we're always called to love and minister with and to. But there's something else here. The Word of God is intended to be a "lamp to our feet and a light to our path" (Ps.
119:105). We'll only live and minister properly in this broken world when we're being guided and protected by the light of biblical wisdom. Even those who would call ourselves life-long students of the Bible can live unaware of how profound our need is and how broken our world is. When we forget, we don't daily hunger for the practical ministry rescue and guidance of God's Word. So we may not recognize we're left to our own foolishness, and we respond to things in a way that only deepens and complicates the troubles that we're already dealing with in the messiness of ministry in the local church. You can be sure of this in your ministry: your day of trouble will come. Yet in your trouble God hasn't left you alone. What is it that he gives you in your trouble? He gives you himself! He is what will keep you safe. Hear the reassuring words of Psalm 27:5:"For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble." He is near, and he comes to you armed with transforming grace and liberating wisdom. But it's vital that you live with eyes and heart open to what Scripture says to you about you and the community of faith. If you do, you'll live in a way that's humble and needy, seeking the grace and
wisdom that you so desperately need and that God so willingly and lovingly gives. Be realistic. Remember, there's amazing grace for every realistic thing, in your life and ministry, you'll be called to face. The "do" of Christianity is the result of knowing the greatest "doer" of all time. Jesus said, "Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing." (John 14:12) That's just what happens when you become a Christian. Christianity isn't just believing. It isn't just experiencing. And it isn't just doing. It is all three....everyday....for the rest of your life. At the end of your life on earth, you are welcomed into heaven....not because of anything you have done to "earn" it....but rather, your entrance into heaven is entirely the result of Jesus dying for your sins on the cross. Period. His work gets you in....and through faith in Him, God saved you....and all you did was to "ride the wave" which the Lord provided in your life. Are you in the flow of the Holy Spirit? Or are you still "dead in your sins" and unconverted? Are you a Christian? If so, you have believed some things about
God....you are doing things as a result of your conversion which flow out of your love for God and others....and you are experiencing the daily influence of the Holy Spirit who now resides inside your body, which has become the "temple of God" and the place where He dwells on earth. A Christian believes things. A Christian experiences things. A Christian does things. Believing, experiencing, and doing are all part of what it means to be a Christian. Are you one? If not, then consider this: "Today is the day of salvation." (2 Cor. 6:2) "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord." (Acts 3:19) "Repent and believe the good news." (Mark 1:15) "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved." (Acts 16:31) Just as there was only one door to enter Noah's ark, there is only one way to enter the kingdom of God. Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) Without Jesus, you can never believe, experience, or do anything that will connect you to your Creator and to the one true
God. He is your only hope. He is your only ticket. He is your only Savior. Will you repent of your sin and receive Him into your life today through faith? Will you trust Him with your earthly life, as well as with your eternal well-being? He is trustworthy. He is faithful. He is "the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." Deaths in Sikh temple attack in US

At least seven people have been killed after an armed man opened fire at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee, in the US state of Wisconsin, authorities say. The suspected shooter is believed to be among those killed. Police were called to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in the suburb of Oak Creek, where witnesses said several dozen people were gathering for a service on Sunday. Authorities found four people dead inside the temple and two outside, Bradley Wentlandt, p o l i c e c h i e f o f nearby Greenfield, said. Sunny Singh, 21, of Milwaukee, said a friend pulled into the temple's parking lot, heard shots and saw two people fall down. The friend then saw the shooter reload his weapons and head to the temple's entrance, Singh said. The first police officer to arrive
at the temple engaged in gunfire outside the building with a man police believe was the shooter, Wentlandt said. The suspect was killed, he said. Tactical units went through the temple, and authorities do not believe a second shooter was involved, Wentlandt said. Shot multiple times It is unclear how many others were wounded. Wentlandt said he had been told the officer who exchanged gunfire with the suspect and another person had been taken to hospitals. He said the officer was shot multiple times and is in surgery and is expected to survive. The spokeswoman for the area trauma center said three victims were being treated there, including one who was in surgery. Jatin Der Mangat, 38, of Racine, the nephew of the temple's president, Satwant Singh Kaleka, said his uncle was one of those shot, but he didn't know how serious his injuries were.
He was among those waiting for news when police announced the deaths. "It was like the heart just sat down," he said. "This shouldn't happen anywhere." Sukhwindar Nagr, also of Racine, said he called his brother-in-law's phone and a priest at the temple answered and told him that his brother-in-law had been shot, along with three priests. The priest also said women and children were hiding in closets in the temple, Nagr said. Wentlandt did not identify the suspect or say what might have motivated the shootings. 'Mistaken for Muslims' Sikhism is a monotheistic faith that was founded in South Asia more than 500 years ago. It has roughly 27 million followers worldwide. Observant Sikhs do not cut their hair; male followers often cover their heads with turbans - which are considered sacred - and refrain from shaving their beards.
There are roughly 500,000 Sikhs in the US, according to estimates. The majority worldwide live in India. Sikh rights groups have reported a rise in bias attacks since the September 11, 2001, attacks in the US. The Washington-based Sikh Coalition has reported more than 700 incidents in the US since then, which advocates blame on anti-Islamic sentiment. Egypt border guards killed in Sinai attack

At least 15 Egyptian police officers have been killed or wounded in an armed attack on a police station in north Sinai on the border between Egypt and Israel, authorities say. Egyptian state television said that an Islamist group was behind Sunday's attack but did not give the death toll. The attack comes a month after armed men believed to be Islamist fighters shot dead two Egyptian soldiers in a dawn raid in north Sinai. Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh, reporting from Cairo, said border police patrol were having their traditional meal at the end of the daily fast during the Ramadan month when they were ambushed by masked armed men. The authorities believe there could be a "large number of casualties" but they have not given the exact figure, she said. Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's president, called for an urgent meeting with the country's military, his party said on its Facebook page. A senior security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to speak to reporters, said

Rise of the Triad's return will retail for $14.99; free DLC planned

The return of the PC classic Rise of the Triad from developer Interceptor Entertainment will be sold digitally for $14.99 and offer all post-launch DLC for free, the dev announced during QuakeCon 2012. Marketing director Dave Oshry told Joystiq the priority was being faithful to the original Rise of the Triad in the core game, with addon content allowing the Interceptor team to go crazy once the remake is finished. Oshry says that co-op has been one of the most requested additions players at QuakeCon have asked for, so it's now on the minds of the developers as
something to pursue in the future. Even weapons came up as a possible addition - such as shotguns, which were not featured in the 1994 original - but part of their inclusion would depend on player interest. As far as Interceptor is concerned, the sky
is the limit, and the developer plans to support the game well after launch. As if running down a checklist of oft-requested features from PC players, the game will also be DRM-free, completely moddable, run at 60 frames per second and
have plenty of adjustable settings to let the game run on older hardware. An exact release date has yet to be revealed; however, during a QuakeCon panel, the developer promised it would arrive "late this year or early next year ... at the latest, early 2013." This mirrors (in a yellowed, rich kind of way) the top prize from last year's tournament, but 2012 adds some new rewards for first place: 25 squeezy chickens, a chonku-chonku mini-fig in the color of the winner's choosing, all nine Castle Crashers phone charms, a beanie, a Behemoth tshirt and the new Necromancer

They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his
libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the
North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaustdenying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from
government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this:
1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? Meet the Obama for America app for iPhone, a tool that allows you to spy on your neighbors to determine which of them are naughty (read: not Obama supporters) and which are nice. What you do with that information is entirely up to you. The website ProPublica explains how the app works. The end-user types in his current location. The app returns a Google map of the area that flags households with one or more registered Democrats. Clicking on one of the blue flags reveals the first name, last initial, age, and gender of Democratic voters who live there. Not creepy at all. ProPublicas Lois Beckett notes that this information is publicly available and that canvassers for political campaigns have long had access to it. The question is why Obama for America thinks the average man on the street should have it at his fingertips. An Obama spokesman is quoted as saying: The campaign is strongly committed to ensuring the safety
and privacy of the public and follows up with appropriate action, including alerting appropriate authorities if necessary, in any case of abuse or inappropriate behavior. UPDATE 4:(Jazz) The latest reports we are receiving from police on the scene indicate that law enforcement teams have completed a sweep of the temple, spoken to everyone on the property and are now checking the registration of all the cars parked in the area. Looks like they are being very thorough and not jumping too fast with the media, which is good to see. There will be another update later when they have the identity of the shooter, but obviously they will not release this information to the
press until they have finished investigating that persons home, other potential properties, etc. This is a good move by the police since they dont want to send the media scrambling to places where they will need to do investigative work. The officer who took down the shooter should clearly be recognized as a hero and the commanders running this operation seem to be really keeping it under control. Its a tragedy to be sure, but the first responders should be praised for the work were seeing thus far. UPDATE 5: This just in from Stevegg in the comments: Two quick updates: - Oak Creek has set up a Family Hotline for family of those who were at the temple 888-2981964. - The 3:30 press conference has been pushed back to 4 pm CDT (5 pm EDT). UPDATE 5:(Jazz) As of the 5 PM eastern briefing from the local Chief of Police, there is confirmation that there are 7 dead and 3 others injured. The police
will not be releasing the names of any of the victims nor the police officer who was shot until all family members have been notified. They are treating this as an in process criminal investigation and an active scene and they will not be releasing the identity of the shooter. They are treating it as an incident of domestic terrorism and the FBI is taking over the investigation on that end. There will be another briefing tomorrow morning at 10 AM, but until then we probably shouldnt expect much more in terms of details. A rather frivolous but fun question which is being brought to light by an aspiring teenage genealogist. She has traced the roots of all of the US presidents from Washington to Obama and dug up a rather surprising common ancestor for almost all of them. What do Barack Obama, Thomas Jefferson, George W. Bush and the other past U.S. presidents have in common? Besides holding the coveted title of commander-in -chief, it appears that all of them but one are cousins. The remarkable discovery was made by 12-year-old BridgeAnne dAvignon, of Salinas, California, who created a ground-breaking family tree that connected 42 of 43 U.S. presidents to one common, and rather unexpected, ancestor: King John of England. DAvignon started with the first U.S. president, George Washington, she traced both the
male and female family lines to make the connection. Prior to dAvignons discovery, genealogists were only able to link 22 families of presidents, likely because they only focused on male bloodlines. The only former commander-inchief not linked to King John is the eighth president, Martin Van Buren, who had Dutch roots. Miss DAvignon also found out that she is an 18th cousin to Barack Obama. (Sorry about that, young lady.) But is it really that remarkable that nearly all of the presidents share a common ancestor from the 12th century? There are lots of bottlenecks in humanitys genetic history and they come from some fairly eclectic corners. It was previously announced that one in every 200 men are direct descendents from Ghengis Khan. Of course, the same study indicated that there was an equal likelihood that the same percentage of people could be directly descended from some anonymous goat herder in the Ukraine that nobody has ever heard of. For many though certainly not all of the presidents, there is also the matter of entrenched
social status. Power and money go hand in hand and that was even more true in medieval times than today. Families rose to power and tended to hang on to it. Those same families produced not only captains of industry but political leaders. Think of the Rockefeller family and all their ilk for only one example. So the genes might not be as big of a driving factor as the inheritance of wealth and influence. But whos to say? Maybe there is something to this. Weve long acknowledged that there are Type A and Type B personalities. Does that run in families or is it completely random? The only loser here appears to be Van Buren. But on the plus side, his family can at least lay claim to not being related to Barack Obama. The US Army is seeking to address this with "autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)" (read: drones) for dropping off medical supplies and picking up injured troops. In its latest request for research and development proposals, the Army calls not for new tools, but for the repurposing of current aircraft to

Right now, I'm closer to Mars than the moon is to Earth, the robot craft wrote. Earlier in the week, a dust storm swirling to the south of the landing site gave the team some pause. Ashwin Vasavada, the mission's deputy project scientist and Mars weather forecaster, said the storm basically went "poof" and posed no threat but the agency continues to monitor it nonetheless. "Mars appears to be cooperating very nicely with us. We expect good weather for landing Sunday night," he said. The distance between the planets remains a stubborn challenge to mission control; due to the signal time lag between Mars and Earth (it takes about 14 minutes for a signal on Mars to zip to Earth), Curiosity will execute the landing autonomously, following the half a million lines of computer code
designed by Earthlings. Curiosity will not be communicating directly with Earth as it lands, because Earth will set beneath the Martian horizon from Curiositys perspective about two minutes before the landing. That spotty communication during landing could delay confirmation for several hours or even days, NASA said. And the rover wont immediately begin beaming back mind-blowing pictures of Mars. The first Mars pictures expected from Curiosity are reducedresolution fisheye black-andwhite images received either in the first few minutes after touchdown or more than two hours later. Higher resolution and color images from other cameras could come later in the first week. Plans call for Curiosity to deploy a directional antenna on the first day after landing and raise the camera mast on the second day. Indeed, the first image we receive may come from a different spacecraft entirely. Through a remarkable
combination of engineering and mathematics, a crew will attempt to precisely position a second satellite maneuvering it to just the spot around the giant planet to capture the split second when Curiosity falls from the skies. The plan is to capture MSL during the parachute phase of descent. Curiositys journey to Mars hasnt been without incident.
