PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Australia/New Zealand Standards Committee IT/1, on Information
Systems—Interconnection. It is identical with, and has been reproduced from, ISO/IEC 10040:1992,
Information technology— Open Systems Interconnection — Systems management overview.
This Joint Standard is one of a series of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI ) Standards which are currently
under development. Since OSI Standards are developmental, there may be some minor difficulties
encountered in their implementation. For this reason, Standards Australia will be providing, through the
OSI Help Desk, a service to coordinate and disseminate information concerning difficulties which are
identified in using this Joint Standard.
Under arrangements made between Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand and the international
Standards bodies, ISO and IEC, as well as certain other Standards organizations, users of this Joint
Standard are advised of the following:
(a) In Australia, copyright is vested in Standards Australia. In New Zealand, copyright is vested in
Standards New Zealand.

(b) The number of this Joint Standard is not reproduced on each page; its identity is shown only on the
cover and title pages.
For the purpose of this Joint Standard, the ISO/IEC text should be modified as follows:
(i) Terminology The words ‘Australian Standard’, ‘New Zealand Standard’ or ‘Joint Australian/
New Zealand Standard’ should replace the words ‘International Standard’ wherever they appear.
(ii) References The references to International Standards should be replaced by references to the

1 Scope
– establishes the basis for partitioning the systems management standards into separate groups, specifying
the scope of each group and identifying the principal components within each group;
– gives guidance on the development of systems management standards and identifies the way they relate
to each other;
– is applicable to the definition of all systems management standards and to all aspects of systems
management of whatever scale;
– is applicable to situations in which the responsibility for systems management is centralised and those
where it is decentralised;
– establishes a model for systems management identifies several aspects of systems management (i.e.,
information, functional, communications, and organizational), and further refines the model to clarify
these aspects;
– identifies the principles governing conformance requirements and conformance claims to systems
management standards.
There are no conformance requirements on the main body of this Recommendation International Standard, however
it does specify requirements on standards claiming compliance to systems management.
Annex A of this Recommendation International Standard defines an application context for systems management and
specifies the rules for negotiating systems management functional units. There are conformance requirements associated
with these rules.
