PREFACE
This Handbook was prepared by Standards Australia as a guide for the selection, location and installation of visual warning devices (VWDs). The intent of installing VWDs is to alert hearing-impaired persons, or persons who are required to work in high ambient noise or high ambient light conditions, of a re or other hazard. Visual warning devices are also installed in locations such as hospitals, to alert staff of res or other emergencies; however, it is imperative in such situations that the patients are not placed under stress by being subjected to loud noises. VWDs are also used in conjunction with gaseous suppression systems. The specic selection and installation requirements for each type of visual warning device are largely project and site dependent, and care must be taken to ensure that the optimum end result is achieved.
