Review of Australi an Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australi an Standards are subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new edit ions as necessary. It is important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any amendments thereto. Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publi cati ons will be found in the Standards Australi a Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine The Australi an Standard, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editi ons and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards. Suggesti ons for improvements to Australi an Standards, addressed to the head off ice of Standards Australia, are welcomed. Noti fication of any inaccuracy or ambiguit y found in an Australian Standard should be made without delay in order that the matt er may be investigated and appropriate acti on taken.

FOREWORD
This Handbook is intended to assist those involved with fire, fire safety, and fire protection, by providing a reference to all Australian Standards which deal with fire matters in a nominated area. It is intended to enlarge progressively the various parts of the Handbook by the inclusion of new Australian Standards dealing with fire matters, and reference to specialized manuals and guides provided by Australian organizations. The Handbook gives guidance to those concerned with maintaining acceptable standards of safety from fire, and to those concerned in any way with fire hazards and fire tests. It is intended to help specification writers, regulatory bodies, designers and architects, manufacturers and fabricators, wholesalers and retailers, consumer advice services and educational bodies.
This is a free 6 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

It is also intended to help anyone purchasing, specifying or using materials or products to understand the need for considering a possible fire hazard, and the way in which fire tests may help in assessing that fire hazard. It will also help them to understand the need to consider special precautions that may be required for safe use in specific environments. Users of the Handbook should consult State, Territory and local government regulations when designing for particular installations. It is not intended that the various parts of SAA HB37 be called up in specifications or regulations, although the Handbook of Australian fire Standards will provide references to individual Australian Standards suitable for such purposes.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA Australian Standard Handbook of Australian fire Standards Part 4: Building materials, products and construction
1 SCOPE This part of the Handbook deals generally with matters relating to fire and fire tests concerning building materials, products and construction. This document lists individual Standards and Codes published by Standards Australia, and identifies appropriate procedures and documents prepared by other Australian and overseas organizations. This document is a general guide directing users to Standards dealing in detail with specific areas of fire hazard assessment, fire protection and fire regulation. The Handbook does not provide mandatory requirements on fire matters but advises the user on the applicability of State, Territory and local government regulations.
NOTES: 1 2 The Building Code of Australia (BCA) calls up most of the fire test methods and related Standards needed to define requirements and levels of performance for buildings. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has a number of fire test methods that are used for ship construction. Appendix A lists several of these IMO Resolutions.

2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The documents referred to in this Handbook are listed in Appendix B. 3 FIRE TESTS FOR BUILDING MATERIALS

3.1 General The Clauses below discuss in general terms those fire test methods which are used in Australia for building materials, as well as overseas test methods that are often encountered in specifications and reference literature. Fire tests for assessment of material properties, including building materials, are generally suitable for the purposes of specification and quality control, rather than for direct assessment of fire hazard. Combustion is a complex process involving both chemical and physical interactions. These interactions can be formalized in terms of a series of general combustion characteristics. Tests for the assessment of material properties are designed to determine these general combustion characteristics, and those relevant to building materials are reviewed in this Handbook under the following headings: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) Combustibility. Ignitability. Combustion propagation. Heat release. Smoke release. Toxicity. Other combustion characteristics.

It is important that all pertinent characteristics be assessed; in some cases this may require several tests.
