PREFACE
This Handbook provides extracts from Australian Standards and AUSFAC (Australian Sport and Recreation Facilities Advisory Committee) technical specifications relating to sporting surfaces. The provision of well-designed, safe, attractive and durable sporting and recreational facilities is in the interests of all Australians. Whether such facilities are small community venues or large international stadiums, those responsible for their development and operation need to ensure that they are able to be used efficiently and effectively for the purposes for which they are provided. As is the case in other sectors, the construction and operation of sporting and recreational facilities has not been without difficulties; there are a number of examples of poorly designed, poorly built and inadequately equipped facilities still in existence today. While in the past, the lack of appropriate expertise and guidance could perhaps be used as an excuse, the same is not true today. Through the combined efforts of Standards Australia and AUSFAC, the issues involved in providing appropriate guidance and assistance in the design and construction of sporting and recreational facilities are being addressed. The first of these collaborative ventures is the collation and dissemination of appropriate standards for sporting and recreational facilities in the form of a Facilities Manual. The Standards Australia/AUSFAC Facilities Manual will be issued periodically in parts. Each part will cover a specific group of Standards pertaining to one aspect of the design, construction and operation of sporting and recreational facilities. Parts 1 and 2 of the manual deal with sports lighting and synthetic sporting surfaces; future parts will cover aquatic and outdoor facilities, multipurpose sports floors, sports medicine equipment, etc. Standards Australia and AUSFAC are pleased to be able to bring you the first ever compilation of Standards specifically compiled to meet the needs of the sports and recreation industries. As the extracts are taken directly from the Standards that were current at the time of publication of this issue of the Handbook, users are advised to confirm that the extract relates to the latest edition of the relevant Standard.
