Ryan, a Catholic who is a fitness aficionado and avid deer hunter, is a favorite of the anti-tax, limitedgovernment Tea Party movement. He drew his biggest reaction on Saturday when he said that "our rights come from nature and God, not from government." His selection drew immediate fire from Democrats, who said they relished the opportunity to showcase Ryan's proposed reductions for Medicare and other social programs in their campaign. "Mitt Romney has chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budgetbusting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said. Several Democrats have said that among the potential running mates for Romney, Ryan was the one they would most like to face because of his budget proposals. Others questioned why Romney, who had a series of gaffes in a recent overseas trip that was designed to show he could handle foreign relations, would pick a running mate with virtually no experience in foreign policy. And even some Republicans wary about how Ryan's selection

would be perceived among older Americans who rely on government-backed health and retirement programs in key election states such as Florida are privately concerned that Romney might be taking too much of a gamble with this choice. Republican strategist Juleanna Glover acknowledged that Obama's campaign will bash the Ryan budget plan but said that "this gives Romney something no amount of ads have been able to do - the ability to stand for something. The greatest handicap in his political career has been erased." A ROUGH TIME FOR ROMNEY The Ryan choice comes during a period in which Romney - a former private equity executive with an estimated net worth of up to $250 million - has been on the defensive over Democrats' questions over how much he has paid in income taxes. Romney has refused to release more than two years of his tax returns, leading Democrats to say he has something to hide about his vast wealth, which has included a Swiss bank account and accounts in offshore tax havens. Polls suggest that Obama has been helped this summer by Democrats' efforts to cast Romney

as a wealthy former private equity executive who is out of touch with middle-class America. For Romney, an outsider to Washington, Ryan would provide some expertise in dealing with Congress. But Ryan is a Washington insider without business or executive experience. Unlike many of his colleagues, who made their names at home and then came to Washington, Ryan got his start as a Hill intern and aide and then went back to Janesville, Wisconsin, to run for office, getting elected to Congress in 1998. That is in sharp contrast to Romney, who has been critical of Washington insiders and says his years in private equity as a founder of Bain Capital have given him insight into the needs of U.S. businesses. That inconsistency on the Republican ticket could be a problem, some analysts said. The vice presidential announcement, at the start of a four-day campaign tour through the crucial states of Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio, could give Romney some momentum and energize conservatives who still view him warily at a key time in his ROMNEY'S page 7

Even so, recent national polls as well as surveys in several battleground states indicate a narrow advantage for Obama. While Romney's pick unified Republicans, the impact in swing states such as Florida, Iowa and Pennsylvania was an open question. All are home to large numbers of seniors whose reaction to Ryan's prescription for Medicare is certain to be tested by Democrats. Ryan's selection as well as Romney's own nomination will be ratified by delegates to the Republican National Convention that begins on Aug. 27 in Tampa, Fla. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will be nominated for a second term at the Democratic convention the following week. The vice president called Ryan to congratulate him on his selection, the president's campaign said. The GOP ticket made its debut at a naval museum in Norfolk, Va., opening stop of a long-planned bus tour through four states in as many days. A trip to Ryan's home state was added to previously scheduled appearances in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio. The USS Wisconsin, berthed at the museum, provided a buntingdraped backdrop, a symbol of the nation's military strength as well

as an obvious reference to Ryan's home state. First Romney, then Ryan, jogged down the ship's gangplank to the cheers of hundreds and the stirring soundtrack from the movie "Air Force One." As his family came on stage, Ryan knelt to embrace his daughter, Liza, 10, and sons Charles, 8, and Sam 7, before kissing his wife, Janna. Later, the two held a rally in Ashland, Va., where Ryan said he had good news and bad news. The bad news is that "President Obama is the president of the United States, and the good news is that on November the 6th he won't be any longer," he said. A fired-up crowd cheered Romney and Ryan, supporters on bleachers at one point stamping their feet to create a loud rumble. One campaign official said Romney settled on Ryan on Aug. 1, more than a week ago, and informed Beth Myers, the longtime aide who had shepherded the secretive process that led to the selection. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, not authorized to be named in providing details. Romney and Ryan had an unannounced meeting last Sunday, and the congressman accepted the offer, campaign officials said.

Asked during the day if accepting the offer was an easy decision, Ryan replied, "It was, it was, we've got to save the country." In making his pick, Romney bypassed other potential running mates, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Officials said he had called all five to notify them of his decision. "I am deeply excited and honored to join you as your running mate," Ryan said in his first words at Romney's side. Democrats took a dim view of Ryan's record. "The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires and deep cuts in education, from Head Start to college aid," Jim Messina, the president's campaign manager, said in a written statement. "His plan would also end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors." Insurgents said they had been forced to retreat in the latest twist in relentless, see-saw battles for Salaheddine, part of a swathe of Aleppo seized by rebels last month. Some rebels, outgunned and low on ammunition in Aleppo, have pleaded for outside military help, arguing that more weapons and a no-fly zone over areas they control near the Turkish border would give them a secure base against Assad's forces. "The reason we retreated from Salaheddine this week is a lack of weapons," complained Abu Thadet, a rebel commander in Aleppo who said his fighters would regroup and fight back. "We can handle the bombing. It's the snipers that make it hard." Ten of the 30 fighters in his brigade have been wounded, mostly by snipers lurking even in areas rebels claim to control. His men have broken holes in walls of buildings to try to create safe passages for them to move around in Salaheddine. In Damascus, where Assad's forces have regained control of districts overrun by rebels last month, a resident reported an explosion near the Central Bank, followed by gunfire. "The explosion was huge. There has been fighting for the past halfhour along Pakistan Street. I am

very close. Can you hear that?" she told Reuters, a bang audible over the telephone. Syrian state TV said authorities were hunting "terrorists" who had set off a bomb in Merjeh, an area near the central bank, and who were "shooting at random to spark panic among citizens". The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 40 people were killed across Syria on Saturday. END GAME BEGINS? Despite their superior firepower, Assad's forces have been stretched by months of warfare against increasingly skilled and organized fighters who have taken them on in every city and in many parts of the countryside at one time or another. Germany's spy chief said the Syrian army had been depleted by casualties, deserters and defectors. "There are a lot of indications that the end game for the regime has begun," said Gerhard Schindler, head of the BND intelligence agency, in an interview with Die Welt newspaper. "The regular army is being confronted by a variety of flexible fighters. The recipe of their success is their guerrilla tactics. They're breaking the army's back." Syria's torment, however, is far from over and several signs point

to how the conflict could spill over into its neighbors. Jordanian and Syrian forces clashed along the border overnight when Syrian refugees tried to cross into Jordan, a Syrian opposition activist who witnessed the fighting said. He said armored vehicles were involved in the clash in the Tel Shihab-Turra area, about 80 km (50 miles) north of Jordan's capital, Amman. No deaths were reported on the Jordanian side. Thousands of Syrians have fled into Jordan, but tensions heightened after Assad's newly installed prime minister, Riad Hijab, defected and escaped across the border this week. In Lebanon, Michel Samaha, a former information minister and Assad ally, faces military indictment for his alleged part in "terrorist plots" which included transporting explosives from Syria for use in north Lebanon, a Lebanese security source said. Lebanon, still scarred by its 1975 -90 civil war, is nervous about instability spreading from Syria and shattering its own delicate sectarian power-sharing balance between Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims, Christians and other minorities. US and Turkey to Tighten Coordination on Syria - New York Times

DAMIEN CAVE (Top Stories Google News)

Goran Tomasevic/Reuters A rebel fighter prepared to fire a rocket-propelled grenade at a tank in central Aleppo, Syria. Fierce fighting was reported there on Saturday as well as in Damascus. ISTANBUL Turkey and the United States agreed Saturday to accelerate preparations for the possible fall of Syrias president, Bashar al-Assad, creating a formal bilateral team to manage helping the opposition, providing aid to fleeing refugees and planning for worst-case outcomes that include a chemical weapons attack. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. At a news conference here, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Turkeys foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, said that with the situation in Syria growing more dire as the battle for Aleppo continues to rage it was time to create a nerve center for information sharing and planning. They said a unified task force with intelligence, military and political leaders from both countries would be formed immediately to track Syrias present and plan for its future.

What the minister and I agreed to was to have very intensive operational planning, Mrs. Clinton said. We have been closely coordinating over the course of this conflict, but now we need to get into the real details. Mrs. Clinton, who also announced an additional $5.5

million in humanitarian assistance for refugees, left open the possibility of setting up a no-fly zone, suggesting that the new planning team assigned to perform an intense analysis of all options could be a precursor to more direct assistance. But she stopped short of describing specific plans for helping Syrias

opposition fighters now, or the timing. The day after protesters in Aleppo chanted Arm us with antiaircraft weapons, American officials said the United States remained concerned about providing weapons or air support because it could draw a violent response, not just from Syria, but

also from Russia, Iran and other allies of Mr. Assads that have strongly opposed direct foreign intervention to topple the government. Hinting at fears of a wider war, Mrs. Clinton said Saturday that the goal was to hasten the removal AND page 6

of Mr. Assad, but not in a way that produces even more death, injury and destruction. Turkey is a natural hub for any kind of action in Syria. A former Syrian ally, it declared its allegiance with the rebels; many Syrian opposition groups are based in Turkey, and its Syrian border has become the main distribution point for weapons and assistance to the rebels, who have opened an off-again-on-again supply corridor from the border to Aleppo. On Saturday, Mr. Davutoglu spoke more forcefully than Mrs. Clinton on the need for action. Describing the humanitarian crisis in Aleppo and the plight of refugees fleeing on roads under attack from Syrian forces, he said, The international community needs to take some very decisive steps to stop this. But in practice, analysts said the United States and Turkey, along with a wider group of allies known as the Friends of Syria, continue to hold back. Saturdays announcement still amounts to a policy of life support, some argue, giving enough help to keep the rebel movement alive and minimizing intervention while figuring out what to do next. The friends of Syria have developed a stake in making sure the opposition is simply not wiped out, said Ilter Turan, an international relations professor at [unable to retrieve full-text content]

Bilgi University in Istanbul. That becomes the ruler to measure this by. After 17 months of conflict and at least five months of the American focus on nonlethal assistance, some signs of international help have recently been seen. More rebel commanders in Syria have satellite phones and ways to mask their communications. Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been leading the effort to arm Mr. Assads opponents, and United States intelligence officials have helped select recipients, according to American officials. Rebels and activists say such assistance so far has been nowhere near enough. We dont want food or money; all we need are weapons. We are running low, said Abu Mohammed, a rebel brigade commander in Aleppo. We need antiaircraft missiles and we have a big need for live ammunition. The meeting between Turkey and the United States was part of a flurry of diplomatic activity that underlines the severity of the crisis and the fears of escalating war. Arab foreign ministers plan to meet on Sunday in Jidda, Saudi Arabia, to discuss developments in Syria and to consider selecting a replacement for Kofi Annan, the United Nations-Arab League envoy who resigned this month.

And on Thursday, Iran, Syrias main ally, hosted its own meeting of 30 countries to discuss Syria another sign that the worlds powers see Syria as a proxy for wider battles. On Saturday, a high-ranking diplomat told Iranian news media that the country had evacuated hundreds of its citizens from Syria. In the past few days we have succeeded in transferring some of these dear people back to our Islamic republic, said Irans ambassador to Syria, Mohammad Raouf Sheibani. The move comes after the recent kidnapping of 48 Iranians, who Tehran says are pilgrims but Syrian rebels accuse of being members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. In the meantime, the war grinds on. Syrias state-run news agency reported that rebels had captured one of its television crews in Damascus, the latest indication that at least some in the opposition consider all supporters of the government their enemies. Rebels said that there was fierce fighting Saturday not only in Aleppo, but also in Damascus. Despite pleas for foreign help, the rebels said they would find their own ways to survive and advance. On Saturday, fighters from the main brigade in Aleppo posted a video purportedly showing the successful seizure of

a government weapons arsenal. Dozens of automatic weapons stood in piles alongside steel green boxes of ammunition as rebels could be heard declaring, God is great. Even if the United States and its allies do not come to help, Abu Mohammed said, the revolt will survive. Im not worried they havent helped before, and yet we keep fighting, he said. We rely on God; we are all martyrs for the revolution. Reporting was contributed by Dalal Mawad from Ehden, Lebanon; Hwaida Saad from Antakya, Turkey; an employee of The New York Times from Damascus, Syria; and Thomas Erdbrink from Tehran. campaign. It is likely to add excitement for the conservatives who make up the party's core and will be out in force at the Republican National Convention - where Romney will be named the party's official presidential nominee - in Tampa, Florida, during the last week of August. "We are offering a positive, governing agenda that will lead to economic growth, to widespread and shared prosperity, and that will improve the lives of our fellow citizens," Romney said. The announcement thrilled conservatives who staged a late push to promote Ryan whose Midwestern home state favors the Democrats but which could now be in play with a native son on the ticket. "This is excellent news," said Joanne Terry, a Tea Party organizer in Ozaukee County, north of Milwaukee. "I'm excited. I'm in tears." She said she waffled for a "long time" as to which Republican candidate to back. "Weighing the options, he

(Romney) was the best, but now with Ryan, he is definitely the best," said Terry, who lives in Mequon. South Carolina-based Republican strategist Adam Temple said the Ryan choice suggests Romney is thinking beyond November. "Any choice Mitt Romney had to make carried risks, but the reward is greater in this case. Paul Ryan has a clear understanding of the economy and how to improve it, one of Mitt Romney's top priorities, and they both have demonstrated chemistry on the campaign trail," he said. FORMING A TEAM Romney and Ryan bonded during the Republican primary battle in Wisconsin last spring when Ryan enthusiastically campaigned with the 65-year-old candidate and together they visited cafes and businesses. But their personal chemistry does not mean Romney endorses all aspects of the Ryan budget, Romney aides said Saturday, making clear that Romney would propose his own fiscal plans. Ryan had begun work on a

budget blueprint of his own before Republicans captured the House in the 2010 mid-term elections. But it got little attention from reporters or Republican colleagues, who were not interested in associating themselves with a detailed list of budget cuts. By the fall of 2010, however, the budget and the deficit had become defining issues, thanks in part to the Tea Party movement. After Republicans took control of the House in January 2011, Ryan became chairman of the House Budget Committee. Suddenly he was one of the Republican Party's most visible and formidable leaders, and a frequent guest on cable news shows and the Republican speaking circuit. Ryan's budget plan, which passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives last March despite significant Democratic opposition, aims to cut tax rates while also slowing the rapid growth of the federal debt. It would do so mainly by cutting back domestic programs that many Democrats have vowed to

protect. Ryan would set up a voucher-like system for the Medicare program to help beneficiaries buy private health insurance or give them access to the traditional fee-forservice plan. Another controversial portion of Ryan's budget is a plan to reduce the cost of Medicaid, the federally backed healthcare plan for the poor, by turning it into a block grant program for states. They envision transforming Medicare into a program in which future seniors would receive government checks that they could use to purchase health insurance. Under the current program, the government directly pays doctors, hospitals and other health care providers. Ryan and other supporters say the change is needed to prevent the program from financial calamity. Critics argue it would impose ever -increasing costs on seniors. Other elements of the budget plan would cut projected spending for Medicaid, which provides health care for the poor, as well as food stamps, student loans and other social programs that Obama and Democrats have pledged to defend.

In all, it projects spending cuts of $5.3 trillion over a decade, and would cut future projected deficits substantially. It also envisions a far-reaching overhaul of the tax code of the sort Romney has promised. Romney and Ryan appeared comfortable with each other when they campaigned together earlier in the year. The former governor eagerly shared the microphone with the younger man and they shared hamburgers at a fast food restaurant. In making an endorsement before his state's primary last spring, Ryan said, "I picked who I think is going to be the next president of the United States I picked Mitt Romney. ... The moment is here. The country can be saved. It is not too late to get America back on the right track. ... It is not too late to save the American idea." Romney was the subject of an April Fools prank in which Ryan played a role. Romney showed up at a supposed campaign event where he heard Ryan calling him "the next president of the United States" only to find the room nearly empty. Ryan has worked in Washington for much of his adult life, a contrast to Romney, who frequently emphasizes his experience in business. He is also

No matter what side you're on this election season, there's probably something we can all agree on: it would be nice to see a woman reach America's highest office. Ever since George Washington took office in 1789, the presidency has remained a boys club. We're still hopeful, though, that a female US president is in our near future, thanks in big part to all the women world leaders who've led the way. These female heads of state and government, who've been elected in recent years in countries like Germany, Jamaica, Australia, Thailand, and Argentina, are paving the road for America. Stir will move in a 'new direction' on Sunday: Ramdev - Hindustan Times

Democrats have been quick to point out the drawbacks of selecting Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee. But the limited polling available suggests that Ryan could help Mitt Romney swing Wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes, cutting into voter groups that tend to strongly favor President Barack Obama. A Public Policy Polling survey conducted in July showed that, of all the Republican vice presidential contenders, Ryan had the most effect on the presidential race in his home state. Although Obama led Wisconsin by 6 points in a head-to-head matchup with Romney, the poll showed that the vote swung by five points in favor of Republicans when Ryan was added to the ticket. the Wisconsin vote by winning over Catholic voter, who make up 33% of Badger State voters. Ryan, a devout Catholic, could help swing some of the 53 percent of Catholic voters in Wisconsin that went to Obama in 2008, especially if he makes a point to hit Obama on the contraception mandate. A third factor, that has been mostly overlooked, is how Ryan

could shift the youth vote in Wisconsin. PPP found that, with Ryan on the ticket, Republicans could actually win the 18-to-45 age group in Wisconsin over an Obama-Biden ticket. Please follow Politics on Twitter and Facebook. Join the conversation about this story

Two earthquakes struck 11 minutes apart in northwest Iran Saturday. The US Geological Survey measured the first quake at 6.4 magnitude, while the second quake measured 6.3. By Marcus George, Zahra Hosseinian, and Jon Hemming), Reuters posted August 11, 2012 at 2:42 pm EDT Dubai Two strong earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday, killing 87 people, injuring hundreds and scaring thousands into fleeing their homes as aftershocks continued to hit the area, Iranian state media said. Iran is straddled by several major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years, including a 6.6. magnitude quake in 2003 which turned the southeastern historic city of Bam into dust and killed more than 25,000 people.

The US Geological Survey measured Saturday's first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 kilometers (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 kilometers (6.2 miles). A second quake measuring 6.3 struck 49 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz 11 minutes later at a similar depth. ( See map here.) There have been at least 18 aftershocks since then, Iranian media said. The second quake struck near the town of Varzaghan ( see map here). "The quake was so intense that people poured into the streets through fear," Fars news agency said of the town. The head of the crisis center in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province where the quakes struck said 87 people had been killed, Fars said. Some 600 had been injured, the agency added. Some 210 people in Varzaghan and Ahar have been rescued from under the rubble of collapsed

buildings, the official IRNA news agency said, quoting a local official. Tabriz is a major city and trading hub far from Iran's oil producing areas and known nuclear facilities. Though buildings in the city are substantially built, homes and businesses in Iranian villages are often made of concrete blocks or mud brick that can crumble and collapse in a strong quake. A local provincial official urged people in the region to stay outdoors during the night for fear of aftershocks, according to IRNA. Lawmaker Abbas Falah said people in the region are in need of bread, tents and drinking water. Is Modern Portfolio Theory Dead? Come On.

Paul Pfleiderer (TechCrunch)
Submitted at 8/11/2012 2:00:50 PM

Editors note: Paul Pfleiderer is the C.O.G. Miller Distinguished Professor of Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and co-founder of Quantal International. A few weeks ago, TechCrunch published a piece arguing software is better at investing than 99% of human investment advisors. That post, titled Thankfully, Software Is Eating The Personal Investing World, pointed out the advantages of engineering-driven software solutions versus emotionally driven human judgment. Perhaps not surprisingly, some commenters (including some financial advisors) seized the moment to call into question one of the foundations of softwarebased investing, Modern Portfolio Theory. Given the doubts raised by a small but vocal chorus, its worth spending some time to ask if we need a new investing paradigm and if so, what it should be. Answering that question helps show why MPT still is the best investment methodology out there; it enables the automated, low-cost investment management offered by a new wave of Internet startups including Wealthfront

(which I advise), Personal Capital, Future Advisor and SigFig. The basic questions being raised about MPT run something like this: Hasnt recent experience i.e., the financial crisis shown that diversification doesnt work? Shouldnt we primarily worry about Black Swan events and unforeseen risk? Dont these unknown unknowns mean we must develop a new approach to investing? Lets begin by briefly laying out the key insights of MPT. MPT is based in part on the assumption that most investors dont like risk and need to be compensated for bearing it. That compensation comes in the form of higher average returns. Historical data strongly supports this assumption. For example, from 1926 to 2011 the average (geometric) return on U.S. Treasury Bills was 3.6%. Over the same period the average return on large company stocks was 9.8%; that on small company stocks was 11.2% ( See 2012 Ibbotson Stocks, Bonds, Bills and Inflation (SBBI) Valuation Yearbook, Morningstar, Inc., page 23. ). Stocks, of course, are much riskier than Treasuries, so we expect them to have higher average returns and they do.

One of MPTs key insights is that while investors need to be compensated to bear risk, not all risks are rewarded. The market does not reward risks that can be diversified away by holding a bundle of investments, instead of a single investment. By recognizing that not all risks are rewarded, MPT helped establish the idea that a diversified portfolio can help investors earn a higher return for the same amount of risk. To understand which risks can be diversified away, and why, consider Zynga. Zynga hit $14.69 in March and has since dropped to less than $2 per share. Based on whats happened over the past few months, the major risks associated with Zyngas stock are things such as delays in new game development, the fickle taste of consumers and changes on Facebook that affect users engagement with Zyngas games. For company insiders, who have much of their wealth tied up in the company, Zynga is clearly a risky investment. Although those insiders are exposed to huge risks, they arent the investors who determine the risk premium for Zynga. (A stocks risk premium is the extra return the stock is expected to earn that compensates for the stocks risk.) Rather, institutional funds and

other large investors establish the risk premium by deciding what price theyre willing to pay to hold Zynga in their diversified portfolios. If a Zynga game is delayed, and Zyngas stock price drops, that decline has a miniscule effect on a diversified shareholders portfolio returns. Because of this, the market does not price in that particular risk. Even the overall turbulence in many Internet stocks wont be problematic for investors who are well diversified in their portfolios. Modern Portfolio Theory focuses on constructing portfolios that avoid exposing the investor to those kinds of unrewarded risks. The main lesson is that investors should choose portfolios that lie on the Efficient Frontier, the mathematically defined curve that describes the relationship between risk and reward. To be on the frontier, a portfolio must provide the highest expected return (largest reward) among all portfolios having the same level of risk. The Internet startups construct well-diversified portfolios designed to be efficient with the right combination of risk and return for their clients. Now lets ask if anything in the past five years casts doubt on these basic tenets of Modern Portfolio Theory. The answer is clearly, No. First and foremost,

nothing has changed the fact that there are many unrewarded risks, and that investors should avoid these risks. The major risks of Zynga stock remain diversifiable risks, and unless youre willing to trade illegally on inside information about, say, upcoming changes to Facebooks gaming policies, you should avoid holding a concentrated position in Zynga. The efficient frontier is still the desirable place to be, and it makes no sense to follow a policy that puts you in a position well below that frontier. Most of the people who say that diversification failed in the financial crisis have in mind not the diversification gains associated with avoiding concentrated investments in companies like Zynga, but the diversification gains that come from investing across many different asset classes, such as domestic stocks, foreign stocks, real estate and bonds. Those critics arent challenging the idea of diversification in general probably because such an effort would be nonsensical. True, diversification across asset classes didnt shelter investors from 2008s turmoil. In that year, the S&P 500 index fell 37%, the MSCI EAFE index (the index of MODERN page 14

developed markets outside North America) fell by 43%, the MSCI Emerging Market index fell by 53%, the Dow Jones Commodities Index fell by 35%, and the Lehman High Yield Bond Index fell by 26%. The historical record shows that in times of economic distress, asset class returns tend to move in the same direction and be more highly correlated. These increased correlations are no doubt due to the increased importance of macro factors driving corporate cash flows. The increased correlations limit, but do not eliminate, diversifications value. It would be foolish to conclude from this that you should be undiversified. If a seat belt doesnt provide perfect protection, it still makes sense to wear one. Statistics show its better to wear a seatbelt than to not wear one. Similarly, statistics show diversification reduces risk, and that you are better off diversifying than not. Timing the market The obvious question to ask anyone who insists diversification across asset classes is not effective is: What is the alternative? Some say Time the market. Make sure you hold an asset class when it is earning good returns, but sell as soon as things are about to go south. Even better, take short positions when the outlook is negative. With a trustworthy crystal ball, this is a winning strategy. The potential gains are huge. If you had perfect foresight and could time the S&P 500 on a daily basis, you could

have turned $1,000 on Jan. 1, 2000, into $120,975,000 on Dec. 31, 2009, just by going in and out of the market. If you could also short the market when appropriate, the gains would have been even more spectacular! Sometimes, it seems someone may have a fairly reliable crystal ball. Consider John Paulson, who in 2007 and 2008 seemed so prescient in profiting from the subprime markets collapse. It appears, however, that Mr. Paulsons crystal ball became less reliable after his stunning success in 2007. His Advantage Plus fund experienced more than a 50% loss in 2011. Separating luck from skill is often difficult. Some people try to come up with a way to time the market based on historical data. In fact a large number of strategies will work well in the back test. The question is whether any system is reliable enough to use for future investing. There are at least three reasons to be cautious about substituting a timing system for diversification. First, a timing system that does not work can impose significant transaction costs (including avoidable adverse tax consequences) on the investor for no gain. Second, an ill-founded timing strategy generally exposes the investor to risk that is unrewarded. In other words, it puts the investor below the frontier, which is not a good place to be. Third, a timing systems

success may create the seeds of its own destruction. If too many investors blindly follow the strategy, prices will be driven to erase any putative gains that might have been there, turning the strategy into a losing proposition. Also, a timing strategy designed to beat the market must involve trading into good positions and away from bad ones. That means there must be a sucker (or several suckers) available to take on the other (losing) sides. (No doubt in most cases each party to the trade thinks the sucker is on the other side.)

investors over the long term. Although the market dropped precipitously in October 1987, it was close to fully recovered in June 1988. The flash crash was confined to a single day. This is not to say that all surprise events are transitory. The Great Depression followed the stock market crash of 1929, and the effects of the financial crisis in 2007 and 2008 linger on five years later. The question is, how should we respond to uncertainties and Black Swans? One sensible way is to be more diligent in quantifying the risks we can see. For example, Black Swans since extreme events dont happen What about those Black Swans? often, were likely to be misled if D o e s n t M P T i g n o r e t h e we base our risk assessment on p o s s i b i l i t y t h a t w e c a n b e what has occurred over short time surprised by the unexpected? This means asset returns are drawn from allocating most of the portfolio to changing distributions as the safe assets and significantly world economy and financial reducing exposure to risky assets, relationships change. which are likely to be affected by Some Black Swan events turned Black Swan surprises. This out to have limited effects on response is consistent with MPT.

If you worry about Black Swans, you are, for all intents and purposes, a very risk-averse investor. The MPT portfolio position for very risk-averse investors is a position on the efficient frontier that has little risk. The cost of investing in a lowrisk position is a lower expected return (recall that historically the average return on stocks was about three times that on U.S. Treasuries), but maybe you think thats a price worth paying. Can everyone take extremely conservative positions to avoid Black Swan risk? This clearly wont work, because some investors must hold risky assets. If all investors try to avoid Black Swan events, the prices of those risky assets will fall to a point where the forecasted returns become too large to ignore. A third and arguably pathological response to the Black Swan problem is to say that nothing is safe. An extreme event could significantly reduce the value of any asset (We may not have seen it, but this doesnt mean that it couldnt happen). I doubt anyone has gone to this nihilistic extreme, and I mention it to make it clear that being aware of the potential for unknown unknowns is useful, but not at the cost of decisionmaking paralysis. Of course, if you are that privileged investor with a reliable enough crystal ball, by all means use it. The problem lies in MODERN page 20

He doesnt answer the logical followup, wondering how much more innovation there could have been if the culture hadnt crushed so much of the opportunity in the first place. Instead, Franks data points have the opposite effect of reinforcing the central thesis of the article. If the Vanity Fair author got the context of C# wrong and understated the companys growth through the so-called Lost Decade, Shaw left unchallenged the central logic of the article and its implications moving forward. Even more tellingly, the very tone and audacity of the article, its mainstream non-tech audience, would never have occurred in the past. Microsoft presented such momentum, clout, and inevitability, along with serious ad dollars, to make such a negative attack very dangerous to the health of media companies. With October looming large as the locus of a shipping Windows 8, Surface Tablet, and Windows Phone, there should be plenty of marketing dollars in the pipeline. Why arent the media companies afraid of rocking the boat? Probably because Microsoft needs them more than the other way around, what with new product coming from Apple, Google, Amazon, and possibly social players. And analysts have to be careful not to overestimate Microsoft impact in the marketplace should

miscalculation come back to haunt them the way Ballmers predictions about the viability of the iPhone did him. What does Microsoft see when it looks in the mirror? Surely the bluster from Ballmer comes from that same well of hope, arrogance, and doubt, the confidence that Windows and Office and the Server division will finance eventual success in the innovation race. But the legacy revenue is an albatross difficult to shake off, with its devastating impact on the new thinking required to understand the new realtime mobile world. Windows 8 may well stem the mind share drain brought on by the iPad, but subtle clues suggest otherwise. When Bill Gates pushed tablets into the marketplace 10 years ago, OneNote, the one application that took advantage of the interface, was hamstrung by the failure to provide a free runtime. Its ironic but not surprising that OneNote today is the only Office application shipping for the iPad. The implementation was not perfect, but the underlying innovation was on target. The economic imperative of the Microsoft tax prevented the synergy of hardware and software from being realized. As I type these words on a Bluetooth keyboard propping up an iPad, my 11-year old daughter asks me what Im writing about. Microsoft, I say, and cool, she

Actually she does use Microsoft, as in XBox, and Skype as in her main communications channel while playing Mindcraft. And Google to research everything. And in another post, Doc Searls broaches the idea of using Wikipedia as a ubiquitous storage point for blog posts, a place we can feel confident of persisting as a result of its canonical and increasingly authoritative momentum. Google honors it at or near the top of searches, taking the everything of a 12 year old to its next logical conclusion, and in the process skipping right over Microsofts window into the next generation. My 18-year old daughter is reported to be actually using email to communicate with a workgroup in college, but Exchange and Outlook its not. Gmail and GTalk video are merging into Google + and Hangouts. Facetime is the competition; Microsoft is odd man out. Young at heart. Experienced at mind. driSuit endurance case: Take your iPhone swimming

Steven Sande (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)
Submitted at 8/11/2012 3:00:00 PM

During the opening ceremonies for the 2012 London Olympic Games, the number of athletes using iPhones to take photos and video during the "march of nations" was staggering. Who knows? When the 2016 Summer Games start up in Rio de Janeiro, the swimmers might be using their iPhones in the pools during their post-race celebrations if they pick up the driSuit endurance waterproof case for iPhone 4 and 4S(US$59.95). Design In the past I've looked at several waterproof iPhone cases, with the most successful at this point probably being the LifeProof cases. Those cases cost $10 more, but are tested to Military Specifications MIL-STD-810F516.5 standards for shock and impact protection. How deep can you go in water with the driSuit? Tim Collins, general manager of driSuit Technologies, said that the case is tested at 5 meters -- more than enough for snorkeling or surfing. The driSuit uses something that's completely different to protect the iPhone's screen -- a fluidic membrane that contains a nontoxic fluid and allows for full use of the touch screen while

submerged. That screen feels a bit weird at first, but you quickly realize that it works very well underwater for manipulating the iPhone's touch screen. Gallery: driSuit endurance case for iPhone 4/4S Looks-wise, the driSuit endurance is nothing spectacular. The company does have some color versions that are probably more attractive than the black plastic model I received for review, but if you're looking for a waterproof case I don't think that fashion is your main goal in life. The iPhone 4 or 4S slides into the bottom of the case, after which time you snug a small door to the bottom and then click down two latches. There's enough space in the back of the case to carry one credit card or piece of ID. As you'd expect, all openings are covered with a silicone material to prevent water from coming in. driSuit does sell waterproof headphones ($19.95) that work with the case, and there's also a bright yellow flotation wrist strap ($9.95) to make sure that your iPhone is recovered in case you're eaten by a shark. A regular wrist strap is included with the case and attaches through a mount on the top of the driSuit. Functionality Like the LifeProof case, driSuit asks you to test the endurance case to insure that you know how

to properly latch it and that it does remain dry on the inside. To do this, you close the case and hold it underwater for 10 minutes (LifeProof suggests an hour). If no water leaks in, then you've closed the case properly and you're ready to roll.

I decided to give the driSuit the one-hour test, since I rely on my iPhone 4S and really didn't want it to go for a swim if the case leaked. As expected, it came through high and dry, so next I took a deep breath and popped the iPhone 4S into the case.

Here's a short video of a swim to the bottom of a sink full of water (about ten inches deep): Wasn't that fun? Not really. Anyway, I really didn't feel like suiting up and going to the pool, or taking a shower with my iPhone. Remember, driSuit recommends that you don't go below 5 meters underwater with the case, so any hopes of attaching a weight and line to the case to turn your iPhone into a cheap ROV is out of the question. Shooting underwater video in the hot tub? Fine. Just don't send it to us. Conclusion It's not the prettiest case in the world, but if you're looking for protection from water or would like to use your iPhone while snorkeling to take video, the driSuit is going to do the job for you. With the positive feedback you get from the latches, you'll be sure that your iPhone is going to remain dry while it's in the driSuit endurance case. Pros Excellent waterproofing tested down to 5 meters Unique fluidic membrane over screen feels odd, but works great to insure touchscreen accuracy underwater Price is less than some competing waterproof cases DRISUIT page 18

Moreover, when asked how they thought they'd solved these problems, they were more likely to reply that they'd felt they'd had a sudden insight. Alcohol isn't for everyone. Some people have no control in its presence. Some merely worry that they'll have no control in its presence. Some should never be in its presence. More Technically Incorrect But if, as many in Silicon Valley do, you live near excellent sources of wine, it's possible to appreciate alcohol's effects in a different way. I'll admit to, when stuck or bewildered, sitting in the garden at the Honig winery in Napa and discovering ways forward I never imagined possible, accompanied by a glass of wine. Silicon Valley likes to think of itself as a creative force. Yet it's

easy to conceive that currently the problems it's trying to solve are often of a trivial, rather than world-changing, nature. Facebook, for example, has something of a revered reputation for beer-drinking and one for trivializing the idea of friendship. Beer might, indeed, be part of the problem. Perhaps the quality of the alcohol might have something to do with the quality of the inspiration. It is unclear in the University of Illinois' research what sort of alcohol was used in order to bring out the creative spirit. A next step in this research might be to test whether a couple of cans of Miller Light can engender the same refined thought as, say, a single glass of Failla Pinot Noir. Guest Post: The "Maturity Crunch"

Tyler Durden
Submitted at 8/11/2012 11:35:25 AM

Submitted by Pater Tenebrarum of Acting Man The "Maturity Crunch" Central Bank Policy Implementation and the ECB's Plan In order to avoid the appearance that its plan to buy bonds of peripheral governments does indeed amount to 'funding of governments by the printing press', the ECB has tied the plan to the condition that it has to happen in parallel with EFSF/ ESM rescues. However, that was not all there was another stipulation mentioned by Mario Draghi during the press conference. We briefly remarked on this already in our summary and analysis of the ECB decision last week. The other part of the plan, which is supposed to make the operation more akin to a 'monetary policy' type intervention, is to concentrate the buying on the short end of the yield curve. The thinking behind this is that in 'normal times', the central bank is mainly aiming to manipulate overnight rates in the interbank funding markets as well as other very short dated interest rates rates. Hence intervention in the short end of the curve closely resembles this 'normal' implementation of monetary policy. With this, the ECB probably also tries to differentiate

its actions from those of the Fed and BoE. Usually, the central bank determines a 'target rate' for overnight funds, and whenever credit demand wanes and interbank rates drift below this target, it is supposed drain liquidity. Whenever credit demand threatens to push

interbank rates above the target rate, it will add liquidity. During boom times, very little 'draining' tends to happen. As a rule, central bank target rates will be too low, and as speculative demand for short term credit keeps increasing during a boom, its liquidity injections which provide banks with the reserves

required to keep the credit expansion going will aid and abet the growth in credit and money supply initiated by the commercial banks. In the euro area, this method of overnight rate targeting has produced roughly a 130% expansion of the true money supply in the first decade of the

euro's existence about twice the money supply expansion that occurred in the US during the 'roaring twenties' (Murray Rothbard notes in 'America's Great Depression' that the US true money supply expanded by about 65% in the allegedly 'nonGUEST page 23

In fact, historically, the relationship has been the inverse. inflationary' boom of the 1920's). This expansion of money and credit is the root cause of the financial and economic crisis the euro area is in now. This point cannot be stressed often enough: the crisis has nothing to do with the 'different state of economic development' or the 'different work ethic' of the countries concerned. It is solely a result of the preceding credit expansion. Since long term interest rates are essentially the sum of the expected path of short term interest rates plus a risk and price premium, the central bank's manipulation of short term rates will usually also be reflected in long term rates. In the euro area's periphery, the central bank has lost control over interest rates since the crisis has begun. The market these days usually expresses growing doubts about the solvency of sovereign debtors by flattening their yield curve: short term rates will tend to rise faster than long term ones. This in essence indicates that default (or a bailout application) is expected to happen in the near future. It is possible that this effect has also influenced the ECB's decision to concentrate future bond buying on the short end of the yield curve. However, as is usually the case with such interventions, there are likely to be unintended consequences. The Rollover Problem Recently the bond maturity profile of Italy and Spain looked as depicted in the charts below. Note that the charts are already

slightly dated (this snapshot was taken at the beginning of the year), so there may have been a few changes in the meantime, but they probably still represent a reasonably good overview of the situation: There has been an enormous shift in the maturity schedule of the debt of both governments when we compare these charts to the situation as it looked in May of 2010, when the following snapshots were taken: As of mid 2010, Italy had 168.2 billion of debt coming due in 2012. At the beginning of 2012, this had increased to 319.6 billion a near doubling. In Spain, the change is even more extreme: As of mid 2010, Italy had 168.2 billion of debt coming due in 2012. At the beginning of 2012, this had increased to 319.6 billion a near doubling. In Spain, the change is even more extreme: In mid 2010, 61.2 billion of bonds were expected to mature in 2012. At the beginning of 2012, this number had swelled to 142.2 billion. What accounts for this enormous change? When interest rates began to rise sharply, the governments of Spain and Italy ceased to issue long term debt, opting to shorten the maturity spectrum of their debt instead. This was done because long term interest rates had become too high for their taste. It was no longer considered affordable to finance the government at these rates

when they exceeded 6% and later temporarily even 7%. Thus panic began to set in when short term interest rates began to rise sharply as well in November of 2011 and again from March 2012 onward. Now we can already see what the problem with the ECB's plan is: it will tend to shorten the average maturity of peripheral debt even further once it is implemented. In fact, it already has this effect even before the ECB has bought a single bond, as rates on the short end of the curve have recently fallen sharply in reaction to the announcement. As Bloomberg reports: European Central Bank President Mario Draghis bid to bring down Spanish and Italian yields may spur the nations to sell more short -dated notes, swelling the debt pile that needs refinancing in the coming years. [] In a way what the ECB has done is making the situation worse, said Nicola Marinelli, who oversees $160 million at Glendevon King Asset Management in London. Focusing on the short-end is very dangerous for a country because it means that every year after this they will have to roll over a much larger percentage of their debt. The average maturity of Italys debt is 6.7 years, the lowest since 2005, the debt agency said in its quarterly bulletin. The target this year is to keep that average at just below seven years, according to Maria Cannata, who heads the

agency. In Spain, where the 10year benchmark bond yields 6.94 percent, the average life is 6.3 years, the lowest since 2004, data on the Treasurys website show. Driving down the short-dated yields provides a little bit of comfort and encourages Spain and Italy to issue more at the shortend, Marc Ostwald, a strategist at Monument Securities Ltd. in London, said. The problem is that you are building up a refinancing mountain. (emphasis added) Even if the ECB buys the bonds of Italy and Spain, they will still have to repay them and regularly roll them over at maturity. By inducing them to shorten the average maturity of their debt further, the ECB creates new risks, especially as the economic downturn remains in full swing and is likely to worsen the fiscal situation of both countries in the short to medium term. Interestingly, a similar shortening of average debt maturities can be observed in the euro area's 'core' countries. France is certainly considered a 'core' country and is currently treated as a 'safe haven' by bond investors. However, this is a tenuous situation, as it can still not be ruled out that the government will eventually be called upon to bail out the country's banks. At the moment all is quiet on that front, but it was only in November last year when the market was extremely worried about the risk these banks face in view of their enormous balance sheets and potential funding

problems. A similar tendency to shorten the government's debt maturity profile can be oberved in Germany: Now, Germany and France are obviously not expected to have problems rolling over their debt in the near term. The problem is rather that all these countries compete for the same investment funds. In other words, the shortening of the average debt maturity in France and Germany indirectly puts more pressure on the periphery, as the total of debt rollovers in the euro area has become much larger than it was previously. It is of course no wonder that the German treasury is eager to sell lots of debt maturing in two years or less: investors are currently stomaching negative yields on this debt, i.e., the actually pay Germany's government for the privilege of lending it money. This may be great for Germany's government finances, but it it not without risk either. After all, given that Germany is the euro area's 'paymaster', it has taken on a huge and ever growing amount of guarantees. What if the crisis worsens and Germany's guarantees are called in? In that case it could turn out that it was a big mistake to take on so much short term debt just because it looked extraordinarily cheap. The ECB's bond buying plan meanwhile is going to pile on even more rollover risk. GUEST page 25

billion shortfall by the end of 2013. While converting Rmb 244.7 billion to US dollars (the answer is $72.11 billion), I accidentally stumbled across the Rmb 244.7 billion figure in KPMG China's weekly banking news summary Better than expected profits from Chinese banks Ten Chinese commercial banks have reported better than expected net profits of RMB 244.7 billion (USD 72.11 billion) in the first half of 2011, approximately 30 percent more than the net profits reported for the same period in 2010. The increase was boosted by strong growth in the banks net interest income and intermediary business. Better than expected earnings exactly match expected capital shortfalls. Fancy that. Poway, Golden Elephants, and Pay Option ARMs This setup sounds much like the "better than expected earnings" reports by US banks in 2006 on Pay Option ARMs. No money came in to banks but accrued

interest added to the bottom line (until the deferred payment scheme on questionable assets blew sky high). Poway vs. "Golden Elephant" "Golden Elephant" also sounds like the Ponzi scheme in Poway, California. Poway borrowed $105 million and will defer interest and principal payments for 20 years at which time Poway will owe $1 billion. For further details, please see Ponzi Financing in Poway California Based on Massively Rising Property Values Regarding Poway, I was asked "Who is dumber, the city of Poway or the bank that made the loan?" That's a good question. Certainly the bank that originated the loan will not be paid back if they hold this loan to term. But did they keep it? Given the fiasco in Pay Option ARMs I rather doubt it. Indeed, I highly suspect the bank that originated the deal sold the loan to some unsuspecting

pension plan such as CALPers, or perhaps some plan covering Poway itself. It's all to ensure that the Agency remains on the forefront of tech. Not long ago, In-Q-Tel invested heavily in a company called Keyhole. Never heard of them? Maybe you know their work, a little project eventually known as Google Maps. So, want to know what's next for technology? Keep an eye on these 25 companies. 3VR is a video surveillance company that is changing the game The company 3VR Inc develops software enabling organizations to mine data from video. Of course the CIA invested in this company. They make pens with gadgets hidden in them. Adaptx first received In-Q-Tel funding in 2008. They design special digital pens that expedite data entry. For instance, handwritten markup on maps would be automatically integrated into the CIA's system. Field journal notes can be automatically backed up digitally. So it's no surprised they're interested in Basis Technology, which provides software for text analytics in over twenty languages. They work primarily in applied natural language processing, deriving meaning from the ways people actually use language. InQ-Tel has been invested in the firm since 2004. Pitfall! Creator David Crane Seeks $950K to Kickstart JungleVenture

Chris Kohler (Wired Top Stories)

Concept art for the hero of David Cranes new game, JungleVenture. Image courtesy JungleVenture, Inc. LAS VEGAS Thirty years later, Pitfall! papa David Crane is heading back into the jungle. People say, Hey, its the 30th anniversary, you should do Pitfall! 3, Crane told Wired. And I say, I cant. Activision owns it. Although David Crane cofounded Activision in 1979, he hasnt been associated with the giant game publisher in decades. So hes proposing the next best thing. At the Classic Gaming Expo this weekend in Las Vegas, Crane will announce a Kickstarter drive for JungleVenture, a spiritual successor to the groundbreaking action game that made him famous. Crane will seek $950,000 in funding, hoping that gamers will get excited about the prospect of the legendary game designer creating a new action game with a familiar premise. He hopes to ship the game in December 2013. On Friday, Activision published its own Pitfall! game for iOS, produced without Cranes

involvement. This has always been my calling. Crane has grander ambitions for his follow-up. He currently plans to create JungleVenture using the Unity game engine, creating a polygonal world with sidescrolling gameplay.

Its not going to be a 3-D chase through the jungle in first person, he says, largely because of budget constraints. You can spend 10 to 20 million dollars on those kinds of games, and thats not what were going for here. Imagine youre in a fabulous living breathing jungle but the

path happens to be left or right across the screen, he says. You might move in 3-D at certain times; there may be some firstperson segments. Crane says he has a design that will allow JungleVenture to be produced for under $1 million. If the Kickstarter drive raises extra

money, Crane says he will be adding extra features to the game design, which is currently still in the conceptual stage. It does pay homage to the games people know me for: easy to pick up and understand but still very PITFALL! page 28

compelling, he says. I like to teach people the skills they need in a game before they need them, and work them into it gently. By the end, you know everything you have to do to complete the adventure. Concept art for the JungleVenture enemy characters and hero. Image courtesy JungleVenture, Inc. Long recognized as a pioneer in the gaming industry, David Crane fought for game designers to be treated like novel authors or film directors. When their superiors at Atari refused to credit them for their work, Crane and his fellow designers quit and formed Activision, the first third-party game publisher. Since then, he has continued to design and program games, most recently a slew of iPhone and browser-based casual titles for the companies Skyworks and AppStar. This has always been my calling, Crane says of creating games. How do I say this without sounding too arrogant? Im good at it. Theres nobody in the business whos been in it as long as I have who still writes the

code. The code is what brings the game to life. The game will be produced by a new San Francisco-based outfit called JungleVenture, Inc, which also includes three former Viacom /Nickelodeon executives: John vanSuchtelen, former vice president of AddictingGames; David Bergantino, former Nickelodeon VP of digital production and game writer; and graphic designer Bill Wentworth. The new company will produce the game for the Mac and PC platforms to start, but Crane has an eye on creating versions for smartphones and tablets if the Kickstarter drive raises enough money. While Crane says JungleVenture may attempt to raise development funds through more traditional means if the Kickstarter does not meet its goal, he would much prefer to have the direct connection between the player and the creator that crowdfunding allows. A lot of people think of Kickstarter as being only a place where indie developers get a chance to do something a publisher will never let them do,

but I dont see it that way, he says. What I want to do is reach the game players directly, let them decide what games they want and from what team. Voting by backing projects, instead of leaving it up to some publishers boardroom, Crane says. When you when you take a project like this one to a publisher, theyre going to have creative control, control over the budget. The backers of my Kickstarter project are going to be people who say, I want to see what David Crane can do with full creative control. Let's just skip the "Is that a bone in your pocket?" joke we're all thinking and get straight to business: Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been updated and now includes skeletons, spiders and best of all, a bow to kill skeletons and spiders with. Skeletons and spiders are cool and atmospheric and everything, but they're even cooler when they can't murder you on account of being riddled with hundreds and hundreds of arrows.

The update also fixes around 20 or so known glitches, including one called "burning world," which sounds rather inconvenient. Currently, only the iOS version of Minecraft has these updates listed, though we wouldn't figure that a similar update for the Android version would be far behind. Romney chooses Paul Ryan as running mate

(AL JAZEERA ENGLISH (AJE))
Submitted at 8/11/2012 1:48:53 PM

Mitt Romney, the US Republican presidential candidate, has chosen Paul Ryan, Wisconsin congressman, as his vicepresidential running mate. Romney appeared together with Ryan, who chairs the US House of Representatives Budget Committee, at an event in Norfolk, Virginia on Saturday to announce his pick for vicepresident. Romney said Ryan, 42, "has become an intellectual leader of the Republican Party," and stressed that their campaign will focus on ways to create jobs, protect Medicare and Social Security, and repeal the health care law enacted under Democratic President Barack Obama. "His leadership begins with character and values ... Paul Ryan works in Washington but his roots remain in Janesville, Wisconsin," Romney said. Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher, reporting from Washington, said the choice of Ryan is, "a statement by Mitt Romney that he believes that the economy is the most important issue". He said despite Ryan's age, after 13 years in the House he was experienced. "[Romney] has said persistently over the last few months that whoever he picks as vicepresident should be able to lead in

their own right if anything ever happened to him," our correspondent said. When the time arrived for Romney's big introduction of Ryan on stage on Saturday, Romney's tongue briefly let him down. "Join me in welcoming the next president of the United States, Paul Ryan," a beaming Romney said at the event in front of a retired battleship USS Wisconsin. Moments later Romney returned to the podium. "Every now and then I'm known to make a mistake. I did not make a mistake with this guy," he said of Ryan. But he corrected himself, saying the Wisconsin congressman is "going to be the next vicepresident of the United States." Bold choice The announcement marked the end a months-long search by Romney for a running mate to join him in facing Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden in the November 6 election. His choice of running mate is a bold one and comes after polls this week showed him falling slightly behind Obama in what is still a close race, in a campaign that is focused largely on the weak US economy. In-depth coverage of the US presidential election The selection of Ryan brings a measure of youthful exuberance and energy to the Republican ticket as party activists prepare to gather in Tampa, Florida, late this

month for a convention to formally choose Romney as their presidential nominee. Ryan's selection also immediately draws attention to a budget plan he proposed as House budget chairman that would include controversial cuts in government health programmes for the elderly and poor. "We're in a different and dangerous moment. We're running out of time and we can't afford four more years of this," Ryan told the crowd. "Politicians from both parties have made empty promises which will soon become broken promises with painful consequences if we fail to act now." He drew his biggest reaction, saying: "Our rights come from nature and God, not from government."

'Back to the economy' Conservative leaders, increasingly anxious over the state of Romney's campaign, had urged him to pass over reliable - but not particularly inspiring - figures such as Rob Portman, Ohio senator, and Tim Pawlenty, former Minnesota governor, and instead go for Ryan. Ryan is a favourite of the conservative Tea Party, an antitax, limited-government movement that helped Republicans take over the US House of Representatives in 2010. Charlie Wolf, a conservative political analyst based in the UK, told Al Jazeera that Romneys choice of a running mate was a wise decision as it puts the economy "front and centre". "And [the economy] is where Mr Obama ... just cannot win if you look at the debt hes racked up,

and you look at unemployment, the deficit," Wolf said. "[Obama] has been trying his best to stay off the economy ... and now it firmly goes back to that topic." Democrats are eager to pounce on Ryan's budget plan with its proposed cuts to programmes for the elderly - particularly in Florida, where many seniors live and which could be a crucial state in the November election. Ryan's selection makes the Florida leg of Romney's bus tour an instant test for the new ticket. Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, said in a statement that Ryan shares Romney's commitment to "the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy". Romney starts a bus tour on Saturday through four politically divided states that he needs to win in November: Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio. 810 This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read the FAQ at fivefilters.org/contentonly/faq.php#publishers. Lawmaker Abbas Falah said people in the region are in need of bread, tents and drinking water. Earthquake-prone area Iran sits astride several major fault lines and is prone to frequent earthquakes, some of which have been devastating. Tabriz is a major city and trading hub far from Iran's oil producing areas. Though buildings in the city are substantially built, homes and businesses in Iranian villages are often made of concrete blocks or mud brick that can crumble and collapse in a strong quake. A local provincial official urged people in the region to stay outdoors during the night for fear of aftershocks, according to IRNA. The deadliest recent tremor in Iran was a 6.6-magnitude quake

which struck the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of the population - and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel. Ghanbar Naderi, a Tehran-based journalist, told Al Jazeera that the earthquakes had created concern in the capital. The world's most delicious cheeseburger has just appeared before you and you can't resist snapping a picture. But all too often, pictures of food never come out the way you'd like them to. Whether it's the lighting or the angle in which you're holding the camera, there are a few things to keep in mind at home or at a restaurant that enhance the outcome of food pictures. "Smartphone photos of food are often taken in dimly lit restaurants and sometimes, plates have already been partially devoured," a spokesperson for photo service Dreamstime said. "Photos should be taken with the viewer in mind - these are the ones that will be most appealing to look at." Want to share a snapsh Continue reading... David Frum
(David Frum)

Andrew Sullivan complained yesterday that I had engaged in a McCarthyite attack on Ron Paul by writing the following: A politician isnt answerable for the antics of every one of his supporters. But theres surely a reason, isnt there, that racists, anti-Semites, 9/11 Truthers, and Holocaust deniers are so strongly attracted to the Paul campaign. They hear something. They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even

sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in

the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaust-

denying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what

might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this: 1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? The congressman is 31/29 for Bobby Jindal, 26/28 for relatively unknown to the nation Tim Pawlenty, and a dismal 15/16

for Rob Portman. (Rice was 63/ 19 among indies.) Ryan also scores best among women, albeit with a narrow 29/25 edge. For even more counterintuitive results, look at Ryans standing among seniors. Despite the attacks on Ryan over his budget plan, hes easily the most liked of the short-listers among likely voters 65 years of age and over, with a 52/29 favorability rating. His very favorable rating of 31% in the 65+ group is more than 10 points better than the other shortlisters in the Rasmussen survey (again, save Rice). Jindal did well, too, with a 44/28, as did Pawlenty with a 40/ 30 and Portman at 37/26, but Ryans draw among seniors outpaced all of them. Ryan has plenty of room to be defined in either direction with 35% of voters overall not having an opinion, but thats only true of 20% of seniors and Ryan already has a majority of them on his side. Looks like the Ryan choice was both bold and pragmatic. It still means that Romney and Ryan have to aggressively push to define Ryan themselves, rather than allow the media or the Obama team do it first. Update: Commenter Florah Duh reminds me that seniors actually

liked Ryans plan best, according to a Gallup poll in 2011: A new Gallup/USA Today poll contains a counterintuitive finding: the age group most receptive to House Budget Chair Paul Ryans plan to deal with the budget seniors. The poll finds 48 percent of seniors (those 65 and over) support Ryans plan over President Obamas plan, while 42 percent back the president. Thats the highest total among the age groups tested a 47 percent plurality between the ages of 50 and 64 backed Ryan, and a 45 percent plurality of those between 30-49 backed Ryan. But young voters overwhelmingly sided with Obama by a 23-point margin, 53 to 30 percent. Maybe thats because seniors knew better than to believe that the current trajectory would protect their benefits in anything but the short run. The nonprofit group, however, claims Channel One's mission is to inundate teens with advertisements and other noneducational content, wasting valuable class time. Josh Golin, the group's associate director, told FoxNews.com that many parents do not know what specific commercials children are exposed to in the classroom because "Channel One has refused to put the commercials that they show in their classroom broadcasts online." "We asked them on a number of occasions to make those public and they refused," Golin said. "But what we do know is who advertises on their website and there's reason to think they are similar." "The other thing were really concerned about is that theyve been increasingly moving their advertising beyond the two minute limit," he noted. "The ads are bleeding into the entire show." Golin cited a May 23, 2012, broadcast during which he said Channel One devoted its entire newscast to promoting four television shows on the ABC Family network. The group claims that segment

illustrates the network "violating its agreement with schools to limit commercial content to two minutes per episode." Channel One, which began broadcasting in 1990, is a division of Alloy Media + Marketing. A spokesman for the network could not be reached for comment Wednesday. On its website, the network notes its "long history of journalist excellence," including an April 2005 George Foster Peabody Award for its news coverage of the Sudan humanitarian conflict. A review of the website by FoxNews.com on Wednesday found advertisements for Puma, Vistaprint and Lowe's stores. At the top of site, however, next to stories on the Supreme Court and fossil fuels, is a link to the gURL.com website. Golin says much of the questionable content on Channel One's website may not be currently up because "they know that they are getting some media attention right now." Alabama school Superintendent Tommy Bice, one of 42 state superintendents contacted by Golin's group, told FoxNews.com Wednesday that Channel One's programming is under review. "Step one has been to survey our 134 school systems to determine who actually uses Channel One,"

Bice said in an e-mail." That survey will be completed today but preliminary numbers indicate a very small number continuing to use Channel One that was very popular a decade ago in our state. "Once we have final numbers we will determine next steps but realizing that these decisions are local decisions and not a requirement of the State Department of Education," he said. out-of-control entitlement spending. In a dose of the tough-love approach Ryan's become known for, he said: "We promise equal opportunity, not equal outcomes." The Republican presidential candidate called his new running mate a man of "steadiness" and "integrity" as he introduced him. Speaking Saturday morning, Romney praised Ryan as an "intellectual leader" of the party, one who understands the toll the debt is taking on the country but is optimistic about the future. "He doesn't demonize his opponents. He understands that honorable people can have honest differences and he appeals to the better angels of our nature," Romney said. "He's never been content to just curse the darkness. He'd rather light candles." Romney initially fumbled his introduction of Ryan. In the closing line of his remarks, he referred to Ryan as the "next president." Romney quickly returned to the podium to correct himself. The selection comes roughly two weeks before the start of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and gives Romney plenty of space to rally the party

behind his pick before the official nomination. The announcement comes as some polls, including a recent Fox News survey, show the Republican presidential candidate losing some ground to President Obama. Ryan, 42, already considered a rising star in the Republican Party, is chairman of the House Budget Committee. He's been in Congress since 1999 and is best known this session for his controversial budget plan that includes an overhaul of Medicare. Democrats have persistently tried to vilify that plan as a scheme to "end Medicare as we know it." The Obama campaign repeated that line in its first official response to the Ryan selection Saturday morning. "The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires, and deep cuts in education from Head Start to college aid. His plan also would end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors," the campaign said. "As a member of Congress, Ryan rubber-stamped

the reckless Bush economic policies that exploded our deficit and crashed our economy. Now the Romney-Ryan ticket would take us back by repeating the same, catastrophic mistakes." A couple of months back, DARPA announced it'd been working on developing technologies to help during natural or "man-made" disasters, and this TEMP plan (Tactically Expandable Maritime Platform) included the addition of four key modular systems -- one of which was sea-delivery vehicles such as that monstrous one pictured above. Dubbed Captive Air Amphibious Transporters, or CAAT for short, the rugged wheeler gets its drive-on-agua powers from air-filled pontoons, with its main purpose being to carry "containers over water and directly onto shore." However, according to DARPA's program manager, Scott Littlefield, it is more about the big picture, saying, "To allow military ships

and aircraft to focus on unique military missions they alone can fulfill, it makes sense to develop technologies to leverage standard commercial container ships." Thanks to a vid uploaded by DARPA itself, you can now get a feel for what CAAT's all about, so (news photos - Google News) head over past the break -- where Submitted at 8/11/2012 1:29:15 PM you'll find a quick preview of the Peoria Journal Star (blog) ATV carrier in action.
