Hawaii Senate race most competitive since 1970

Politics Not since 1970when the legendary Hawaii Five-O police series was only in the third of its twelve seasonshas Hawaii hosted a competitive U.S. Senate race. But it would appear on Saturday night that history was about to be repeated, as Aloha State voters nominated Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono to face popular former two-term Gov. and moderate Republican Linda Lingle for an open Senate seat. With veteran Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka stepping down after more than twenty years, polls show the contest between Hirono and Lingle a barn-burner. And dont forget: Lingle has already defeated Hirono before, John Fund, political columnist for the American Spectator and

National Review reminded Human Events on the night before the primary. In 2002, thenLieutenant Gov. Hirono became the first Democrat to lose the governorship of Hawaii in 43 years when then-Maui Mayor Lingle defeated her by a margin of 52 to 47 percent statewide. With Democratic Sen. challenging the popular Akaka for renomination six years ago. Lingle, who was unopposed for nomination, has a campaign kitty of more than $2 million. She has also launched her own cable TV network that promotes her candidacy 24 hours a day. Most importantly, Lingle remains a popular figure two years after

leaving the statehouse. In 1970, the states last Republican Sen. Hiram Fong staved off defeat in a tight contest with Democrat Cecil Heftel, who owned a TV station and was wellknown from his on-air editorials. That was Fongs last hurrah as well as the last time a Republican won a Senate seat in Hawaii. Now, pundits will be watching from across the nation to see if Linda Lingle can prove Mark Twains famed axiom that history doesnt always repeat itself, but sometimes, it rhymes. A member of the military council told Reuters that Mursi, a moderate Islamist party official popularly elected in June but with constitutional powers sharply circumscribed in advance by the generals, had consulted Tantawi and General Enan, 64, before ordering both men to retire. But it was not clear how far the generals, members of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), actually consented to a move that reveals a reordering of Egypt's political forces as they all wait for a new constitution, shifting more powers towards Mursi and his longsuppressed Muslim Brotherhood. "This clash between the new president and the military council was expected - but not this fast," said analyst Gamal Soltan. "It can be considered a restructuring of the armed forces and an end to the role of SCAF in political life." Thousands of Islamist supporters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square and other cities to back Mursi's decision. "President of the republic, your decree gets 100 percent," some chanted. Tantawi, after serving Mubarak as a minister for 20 years, helped ease the ageing dictator out of office on Feb. 11, 2011 in the face of the mass street protests of the Arab Spring. A senior Brotherhood official,

Mahmoud Ghozlan, said the army should have returned to barracks once Mursi was elected. But it had instead sought to retain a role in politics: "The nation came to have two heads - the president and the military council," Ghozlan said. "The president had to act to recover his full powers from the hands of the military council." FORCED RETIREMENT In a statement that came out of the blue, presidential spokesman Yasser Ali announced: "Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi has been transferred into retirement from today." In his place as armed forces chief and defence minister, Mursi appointed General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, 57, from military intelligence. Enan was replaced General Sidki Sobhi, 56, who headed the Third Field Army based in Suez, on the border with Sinai. Both those pushed into retirement, whose positions may have been weakened by the border debacle last week in the Sinai desert, were appointed as advisers to the president. By scrapping the army's constitutional declaration, Mursi can also take on the legislative powers the generals had sought to keep for themselves in the absence of a parliament. In June, the military council, backed by judges, dissolved the Islamist-led

assembly elected in January - a move Mursi has challenged. "The decision was a sovereign one, taken by the president to pump new blood into the military establishment in the interests of developing a new, modern state," presidential spokesman Ali told Reuters after making the announcement. "It was a critical decision and the members of the military council understood this because they are patriotic and General Sisi is from the new generation of the patriotic men of the armed forces. He is responsible and well respected." Enan was long seen as particularly close to the Pentagon, the main sponsor of Egypt's armed forces. Washington gives Egypt $1.3 billion in military aid each year. Liberals and other political rivals of the Brotherhood have voiced concerns at the growing might of the Islamists, who for decades were hounded and jailed by Mubarak and his predecessors. But they have also been wary of the army's continuing role. The April 6 youth movement, which helped galvanise the revolt against Mubarak, described Mursi's move as the "first step towards establishing a civilian state", it said on its Facebook BREAKING page 9

In choosing Ryan, Romney is attaching himself to Ryan's controversial budget plan, which has been blasted by Democrats who say it would dismantle popular social programs that help the elderly and the poor. Ryan's selection also suggested that Romney is tackling a prickly task during an intense, nasty and likely close race for the White House. His is asking Americans to consider tough questions about the future of Medicare, the government-backed health insurance program for the elderly, and a range of other programs plagued by runaway spending. SEEKING A NATIONAL DEBATE? In previous elections, candidates who have sought a not-so-popular conversation with American voters have run into problems. In 1984, for example, Democrat Walter Mondale emphasized the need for higher taxes and was swamped at the ballot box as voters re-elected Republican Ronald Reagan. If Romney's campaign wants to foster a national debate over

social programs and government entitlements, the big challenge will be doing so under the whitehot glow of the final weeks of a presidential campaign that so far has been defined by sound-bite messaging and out-of-context attacks by both sides. On Sunday, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus cast Romney's campaign as the one being honest with Americans about the nation's fiscal future and said Obama's team is more interested in attacking Romney. Selecting Ryan shows that Romney "has the leadership and courage to present to the American people a real contrast and a real debate that the American people deserve," Priebus said on NBC's "Meet the Press." Even so, Romney's campaign stressed that Romney would propose his own fiscal plan, suggesting that it did not want the former Massachusetts governor to be tied to everything in Ryan's budget. "The thing you have to remember about these campaigns is that Governor Romney is at the top of the ticket, and that Governor Romney's vision for the country is something that congressman Ryan supports," said Romney spokesman Kevin Madden.

DEMOCRATS TAKE AIM Democrats' efforts to cast Ryan and, by extension, Romney - as a threat to Medicare could be key in the election. Ryan's plan calls for an end to the guaranteed benefit in Medicare and replaces it with a system that would give vouchers to recipients to pay for health insurance. The risk in such a plan is that if healthcare costs rise faster than the value of the vouchers, seniors would have to pay the difference. Obama's senior campaign adviser David Axelrod said on "Meet the Press" that the Medicare changes supported by Ryan would put the healthcare program, which polls indicate most Americans do not want changed, into a "death spiral." Independent Democratic groups have been more dramatic in their criticism. Ahar's 120-bed hospital was full, said Arash, a college student in the town. There were traffic jams on the narrow road to Tabriz as victims tried to reach hospitals, he said by telephone. VILLAGES DESTROYED "People are scared and won't go back into their houses because they fear the buildings aren't safe." The U.S. Geological Survey measured Saturday's first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 km (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz, a trading hub far from Iran's oil-producing areas and known nuclear facilities. The second, measuring 6.3, struck 11 minutes later near Varzaghan, 49 km (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz. More than 1,000 villages in the area were affected by the earthquakes, Ahmad Reza Shaji'i, a Red Crescent official, told the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA). Some 130 villages suffered more than 70 percent damage, and 20 villages were completely destroyed, he said. "We saw some villages that were truly destroyed," said Sadati, the photographer who was

documenting the quake aftermath. "One good thing was that the earthquake happened during the day, so many people were not in their homes. If it had happened at night the casualties would have been far worse." Close to 300 people were believed to be dead, said Reza Sadighi, Ahar's local governor, Fars news agency said. National emergency head Gholam Reza Masoumi said 5,000 people are believed to be injured, according to ISNA. Nearly 100 ambulances and 1,100 Red Crescent workers were deployed, Shaji'i said, along with 44,000 food packages and 5,600 tents for shelter. The relief agency had enough supplies and most residents in the area had access to clean water but Shaji'i asked residents to donate cash to the relief effort. Tehran officials sent condolences to the victims and declared two days of mourning in the province, ISNA reported. About 36,000 people in the quake -hit area have been given emergency shelter, Masoumi was quoted as saying by ISNA. Iranian lawmaker Mohammad Hassan-Nejad warned that if relief efforts did not speed up, the death toll would swiftly rise. "Relief groups have still not reached many villages, because in

normal conditions some of these villages are several hours away," he told ISNA. "Currently the roads are closed and the only way to reach these villages is by air." COLLAPSED BUILDINGS Photographs posted on Iranian news websites showed numerous bodies, including children, lying on the floor of a white-tiled morgue in Ahar and medical staff treating the injured in the open air as dusk fell on Saturday. Other images showed rescue workers digging people out of rubble some alive, many dead. Twenty-eight year old Narges in Tehran said she saw dozens of people in a hospital waiting to donate blood for the victims. Iran is crisscrossed by major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years, including a 6.6 magnitude quake in 2003 that reduced the historic southeastern city of Bam to dust and killed about 31,000 people. Saturday's quakes struck in East Azerbaijan province, a mountainous region that neighbors Azerbaijan and Armenia to the north. Buildings in Tabriz, the provincial capital, are substantially built and ISNA reported nobody in the city had been killed or hurt. TWO page 11

Syrian rebels call for no-fly zone

(Reuters: Top News)
Submitted at 8/12/2012 4:30:11 PM

By Hadeel Al Shalchi ALEPPO, Syria| Sun Aug 12, 2012 5:30pm EDT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad need the protection of no-fly zones and safe havens patrolled by foreign forces near the borders with Jordan and Turkey, a Syrian opposition leader said. Battles raged on Sunday in the northern city of Aleppo, where tanks, artillery and snipers attacked rebels in the Saif alDawla district next to the devastated area of Salaheddine. Syrian civilians desperate to check on their homes pushed into fluid front lines around Salaheddine, even as sniper fire cracked out and rebels warned them to stay away. Abdelbasset Sida, head of the Syrian National Council, said the United States had realized that the absence of a no-fly zone to counter Assad's air superiority hindered rebel movements. He was speaking a day after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said her country and Turkey would study a range of possible measures to help Assad's foes, including a no-fly zone, although

she indicated no decisions were necessarily imminent. "It is one thing to talk about all kinds of potential actions, but you cannot make reasoned decisions without doing intense analysis and operational planning," she said after meeting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Istanbul. Though any intervention appears to be a distant prospect, her remarks were nevertheless the closest Washington has come to suggesting direct military action in Syria. "There are areas that are being liberated," Sida told Reuters by telephone from Istanbul. "But the problem is the aircraft, in addition to the artillery bombardment, causing killing, destruction." He said the establishment of secure areas on the borders with Jordan and Turkey "was an essential thing that would confirm to the regime that its power is diminishing bit by bit". A no-fly zone imposed by NATO and Arab allies helped Libyan rebels overthrow Muammar Gaddafi last year. The West has shown little appetite for repeating any Libya-style action in Syria, and Russia and China strongly oppose any such intervention. Insurgents have expanded

territory they hold near the Turkish border in the last few weeks since the Syrian army gathered its forces for an offensive to regain control of Aleppo, Syria's biggest city and economic hub. TANKS ADVANCE Rebels who seized swathes of the city three weeks ago have been fighting to hold their ground against troops backed by warplanes, helicopter gunships, tanks and artillery. One rebel commander named Yasir Osman, 35, told Reuters tanks had advanced into Salaheddine, despite attempts to fend them off by 150 fighters he said were short of ammunition. "Yesterday we encircled the Salaheddine petrol station, which the army has been using as a base, and we killed its commander and took a lot of ammunition and weapons. This ammunition is what we are using to fight today," he said. Aleppo and the capital Damascus, where troops snuffed out a rebel offensive last month, are vital to Assad's struggle for the survival of a ruling system his family and members of his minority Alawite clan have dominated for four decades. Assad has suffered some painful,

but not yet fatal, setbacks away from the battlefield, losing four of his closest aides in a bomb explosion on July 18 and suffering the embarrassment of seeing his prime minister defect and flee to Jordan last week. Syrian state television showed Assad swearing in Wael al-Halki on Saturday to replace Riyad Hijab, who had only spent two months in the job. Halki is a Sunni Muslim from the southern province of Deraa where the uprising began 17 months ago. The deputy police commander in the central province of Homs was the latest to join a steady trickle of desertions, said an official in the opposition Higher Revolution Council group. "Brigadier General Ibrahim alJabawi has crossed into Jordan," the official told Reuters from Amman. At least 20 people were killed on Sunday in the second day of an armored offensive to retake the northern Damascus suburb of alTel from rebels, opposition activists said. Heavy artillery barrages were hitting the Sunni Muslim town as loyalist troops made a renewed push after an attempt to storm Tel on Saturday was repelled, several activists and Free Syrian Army

sources in the area said. The Arab League said it had postponed a meeting of Arab foreign ministers scheduled for Sunday to discuss the Syria crisis and to select a replacement for Kofi Annan, the United NationsArab League envoy, and would set a new date. Deputy Arab League chief Ahmed Ben Helli told Reuters the meeting was delayed because of a minor operation undergone by Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey are the leading regional supporters of the Syrian opposition. Assad's main backers are Iran and Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah movement. I think (Forbes) had enormous feedback that obviously the sequester is not something that anyone wants, that it will be catastrophic to national security in the state of Virginia, Wes Battle told Human Events. I think when you see the presidential candidates talking about it and

you see the senators talking about it, its certainly gaining some traction. Republican consultant Ron Bonjean told Human Events that McDonnells 2010 election may be an indicator that Virginia is ready to swing Republican once more. In rebuke to Obamas far-left agenda, the state voted a Republican governor into office, he said. What you have now is a very volatile state; its now in the toss-up category. What could put it over in the Romney camp is the issue of jobs and the economy and the defense industry in the state. Fight heats up Bonjean said he believed the message about the dangers of sequestration and Obamas link to the coming disaster had yet to take a solid hold in advertising, but in some ways that fight was just beginning to heat up. After Congress returns, the fiscal cliff is going to be looming, he said. The trend is in Romneys direction, but hell have to seal the deal. A political analyst at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, Geoff Skelley, said the fight for Virginia was quickly becoming more than just a matchup over a swing state.

Republican Senate candidate George Allen has also begun to discuss sequestration on the campaign trail as he faces off against Democratic opponent Tim Kaine for a key seat in Congress. If Romney wins Virginia, Allen will win, Skelley said. In the Centers Crystal Ball campaign model, curated by director Larry Sabato, Virginia is listed as the third most important state to win in November, Skelley said. But having been carried by Obama by a relatively significant six-percent margin in 2008, it could also be the bellwether of a Republican turnaround, he said. For Romney, winning Virginia means hes also going to win Ohio and Florida, Skelley said. It seems like Virginia really could be the state that decides things. The closing ceremony offered a sensory blast including rock 'n' roll rickshaws, dustbin percussionists, an exploding yellow car and a marching band in red tunics and bearskin hats. It was all delivered in a psychedelic mashup that had 80,000 fans at Olympic Stadium stomping, cheering and singing along. Organizers estimated 300 million or more were watching around the world. There were also monochrome recreations of London landmarks covered in newsprint, from Big Ben's clocktower and Tower Bridge to the London Eye ferris wheel and the chubby highrise known as the Gherkin. It all spread out across an Olympic

movement to clean up London after riots shook neighborhoods not far from Olympic Stadium just a year ago. And there was much, much more to come during the three-hour paean to British pop, and to the country's triumphant turn hosting the games.

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry took seats next to Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee. They sang along to "God Save the Queen." But perhaps the best seats in the house were for the 10,800 athletes, who marched in as one,

rather than with their nations, symbolizing the harmony and friendship inspired by the games. As the crowd cheered their heroes and flashbulbs rippled through the stadium, the Olympians cheered back, some PSYCHEDELIC page 9

page. "We want a strong, national army to protect the nation and that does not intervene in politics". ARMY RESOURCES Tantawi's age had meant that his departure had been long expected in some form, and his appointment as an adviser to Mursi appeared to exclude the possibility he might face the kind of prosecution that saw Mubarak, now 84, jailed for life. In a similar vein, two other senior officers in the navy and air defence retired into high office at the Suez Canal Authority and an industrial body, mirroring the kind of lucrative sinecure posts offered to officers in Mubarak's era. The armed forces, with vast resources in Egypt's economy as well as a military strength funded in part by Washington, remain a key institution in Egypt and the process of establishing full democratic control has only just begun. General Mohamed el-Assar, who sits on the military council, told Reuters: "The decision was based on consultation with the field marshal, and the rest of the military council." Mursi, whose election victory over a former general prompted

concerns in Israel and the West about alliances with Egypt, also appointed a judge, Mahmoud Mekky, as his vice president. Mekky is a brother of newly appointed Justice Minister Ahmed Mekky, who had been a vocal critic of vote-rigging under Mubarak. Mekky and Sisi were shortly afterwards shown on state television with Mursi, being sworn in to their new positions. Mursi, who has pledged to uphold democratic accountability and to stand by Cairo's treaties with Israel and other states, has shown impatience with the military following violence in the Sinai desert that brought trouble with Israel and the Palestinians' Gaza Strip enclave this month. The president, whose own Brotherhood movement renounced violence to achieve political change in Egypt long ago, sacked Egypt's intelligence chief last week after the attack in which Islamist militants killed the 16 Egyptian border guards before trying to storm the Israeli border. "The timing of the sacking of Tantawi will serve President Mursi as many Egyptians had blamed the military for the events (on the border) and would not

stand against this decision," said Mustapha Al Sayyid. One analyst said Mursi may also have acted to ensure the military commanders did not recoup their lost credit after a military operation launched in Sinai to hunt down the militants, the biggest such operation since Egypt's 1973 war with Israel. On Sunday, officials said Egyptian troops had killed five Islamist militants after storming their hideout near the isolated border with Israel. Ryan likely to run for both House seat and VP

Politics From Washington D.C. to Wisconsin, betting is strong that newly-minted Republican vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan will run on Mitt Romneys ticket while simultaneously seeking reelection to Congress. It is perfectly legal under state law for Paul Ryan to run for the House and vice president concurrently, veteran Madison (Wisc.) Republican consultant Scott Becher told Human Events shortly after Ryan was formally tapped as Romneys running mate Saturday morning. Becher noted that the Badger State will hold its primaries next Tuesday (August 14) and Ryan is already on the ballot for renomination to a

seventh term as U.S. Representative from the 1st District. Ryan, who has more than $5 million in his congressional campaign committee, appeared headed for another big re-election. Since winning his first term in 1998 with 57 percent of the vote, the Janesville lawmaker has been re-elected with margins ranging from 63 to 68 percent of the vote. Even talk of who would succeed Ryan if the Republican ticket triumphed in November has been dampened. State Rep. Robin Voss of Rochester, a Ryan-style Republican who is likely to become the next speaker of the state assembly, discouraged talk that he was likely to run in the 1st District next year if his close friend became vice president and resigned his seat. Homes and business premises in Iranian villages, however, are often made of concrete blocks or mud brick that can crumble and collapse in a strong quake. Water, electricity, and phone lines in the area of Varzaghan are all down, further hindering rescue efforts, Iran's English-language Press TV reported. Tabriz residents left their homes and crowded the streets following the two quakes, those in the city said. "Everyone was scared last night," a resident said by telephone. "They set up tents and were sleeping in the streets and in parks."

Brian Belski: Stocks Are Setting Up For A Huge Expansion For Years To Come
Matthew Boesler (Business Insider)
Submitted at 8/12/2012 5:27:57 PM

BMO chief investment strategist Brian Belski recently made the call that " we're on the verge of the next great bull market" in stocks and put out a super-bullish chartbook explaining his thesis. A lot of talk among commentators lately has focused on the death of equity investing due to the decline in value of the indexes over the past decade or so. In his latest note to clients, Belski writes that is another reason to be bullish on stockssecular bull markets usually are preceded by "lost decades" like the one we just saw. Belski points to this chart,

"the sword hanging over our neck today is a lot sharper than the sword that hung over our neck" before the Jewish state went to war with three Arab nations in 1967. Although Israeli leaders haven't explicitly threatened to attack, they have been saying for years that they would not tolerate a nuclear Iran, and "all options are on the table." The U.S. has a similar policy. Standing beside U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta earlier this month, Netanyahu warned that time was quickly running out to stop Iran from achieving nuclear capability. The United States has said it would be prepared to use military force to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. But with its superior firepower, it could wait longer than Israel could to strike at Iran's underground facilities, and experts have judged Washington has more than a year to act. Another factor in the timing could be the U.S. presidential election in November, where a Mideast flare-up sending oil prices soaring could harm President Barack Obama's reelection chances. White House spokesman Jay

Carney said over the weekend that Obama "remains committed to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon," but that the U.S. still thinks there is time to persuade Iran through sanctions and diplomacy. While Netanyahu and Barak have concentrated on the perceived nuclear threat, critics of an attack -- including a recently retired spymaster and onetime internal security chief -- have warned of its repercussions. At best, they say, Israel could set back Iran's nuclear development for two to three years, and at worst, trigger a harsh retaliation from Iran and its proxies in Lebanon and Gaza -- and possibly set off a region-wide war. TEHRAN Iranian relief workers saved more than 200 people from the rubble of dozens of villages destroyed when two powerful earthquakes struck Saturday in a wide area north of the city of Tabriz, an Iranian official said Sunday. The official, Hassan Ghadami, Irans deputy interior minister, said that all those under debris have been rescued and those affected are now being provided with their basic needs, the semiofficial Fars news agency reported. The head of Irans Relief and Emergency Organization said that rescue operations were continuing. Reza Sedighi, a relief official in the area, told Fars that at least 300 people were killed Saturday, and other officials reported more than 4,500 injured, some severely. Doctors on the scene predicted that more people would be found under destroyed houses, mosques and farms. In total, 133 villages were damaged. Shortages of water

and food are being reported throughout the quake zone, a mountainous region near the border with Azerbaijan. The quakes struck in quick succession, with the more powerful one measuring a magnitude of 6.4, the United States Geological Survey reported. Iranian news media said that the epicenters were near four

smaller cities north of Tabriz: Ahar, Heris, Mehraban and Varzaqan. The villages near Varzaqan were hit especially hard, with many mud brick houses collapsing and trapping those inside, many of them women and children, the regions governor, Moharram Foroughi said. Most of the dead are women and

children, as the earthquake happened during the day, when many men were out working, said Marjan Lagaei, an Iranian reporter who traveled to the area. Helicopters had to suspend rescue operations during the night as Iran under international sanctions over its nuclear program is barred from purchasing night-vision materials,

which could be used for military purposes as well as civilian missions. Irans interior minister, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, visited parts of the disaster area by helicopter on Sunday morning, promising residents that their houses would soon be rebuilt. All destroyed 200 page 17

DUBAI| Sun Aug 12, 2012 11:23am EDT (Reuters) - Syria's President Bashar al-Assad enjoys the support of his people and can continue to count on his ally Iran as he battles an armed rebellion in his country, a senior Iranian official was quoted as saying on Sunday. Iran has steadfastly supported Assad in his 17-month-long bid to hold onto power against armed Syrian rebels, accusing regional powers including Turkey and Qatar and the West of fomenting unrest in Syria because of its opposition to Israel. Saeed Jalili, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and a representative of Iran's ultimate authority, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, said on Sunday that Syria was a "strong fortress of resistance" against the West and Israel and was thus

YC-Backed HiMom Helps Your Parents Keep Up With Your Life, One Postcard At A Time

And in a touch with on a regular basis. To nice touch, you can also sign me, it seemed like the perfect the card either with a scribble of

your name or another doodle. You can then send it as a postcard for $1.99 or as a free email. Before I go any further with this, Ill say yes, I know there are already a bunch of photo sharing apps, and even hundreds of postcard apps, out there already. Postagram is one of the biggest, and its developers Sincerely are now working with Facebook on a postcard service to create images out of Facebook photos specifically. And with so many more, is there really room for another? I think yes, particularly if HiMom follows through on the trajectory its founders have started. HiMom does what its name says: it is about creating and sending postcards, and building up a relationship specifically around one or two particular people in this case between you and your parents, grandparents or others who are not necessarily connecting with you in your busy life. By narrowing the focus, it becomes something you could potentially use more regularly as part of that specific relationship. In that sense, its not unlike Pair and Cupple, social networking apps designed for groups of two.

By focusing on building social relationships outside of the more established social networking norms, its not unlike YC alum Family Leaf(a family-based social networking platform for families who dont want to or cant use Facebook). HiMom has some automation built into it as well: an upcoming update will offer a daily alert at 11am, and future versions of the app, Poschenrieder says, will let users change how often and when this alert comes, to remind you to send over a card your contacts. Other features to come will include a read receipt, so that you see when your mom opened t h e n o t i f i c a t i o n email, Poschenrieder says, as well as a thank-you button for your recipient to reply automatically, as well as address book integration: right now you have to enter recipients addresses manually. Integrating the address book might widen the number of people you would use HiMom for as well. Whats potentially even more interesting is how the HiMom framework could be developed for more than just postcards: think of how, say during a birthday or special occasion, you can add a

bouquet of flowers or chocolate (or other gift) delivery, in addition to the postcard. And that could loop in with some of the e-commerce knowledge of Poschenrieder and his co-founder Markus Jura. The pair are both German and met while working for Accenture in Europe. When they were in London applying for Y Combinator, they actually pitched a completely different idea, around product sharing between people. (That idea was parked when they realised that acceptance from local merchants in the U.S. was different than in the UK, Martin told me.) Its not too surprising to see YC startups changing this way; after all, the incubator has an ethos of backing talent, not specific ideas. Things like physical gifts could be something to explore further down the line. For now, its about sending a beautiful postcard in place of what was there before which, for many busy professionals, may well have been nothing.

There was also some speculation that the company might offer up a new Apple TV set-top box that would come with some storage for the apps. However, amid all of the talk of a new MacBook Pro with a Retina display and discussions on Apples new mobile and desktop operating systems, the Apple TV was overlooked. And those of us who actually want to run apps on our televisions were left to hope it might happen another day. Theres just one issue: since WWDC, discussions on a new Apple TV have dried up. We havent heard of any improvements to the devices operating system nor discussions on developers bringing their apps to the device. There hasnt even been a rumor mentioning the possibility of a new Apple set-top box launching sometime soon. So, what gives? Has Apples

highly touted ability to keep everything secret won yet again? Or is it possible that the rumors were nonsense in the beginning, and those of us who own an Apple TV will never get the update we so deeply desire? Unfortunately, Im starting to think that its the latter. For years now, Apple has called its set-top box a hobby, and although it doesnt like to use that moniker nowadays, the device really is. Fisker Karma ignites into flames while owner runs errands

Eric Abent (SlashGear)
Submitted at 8/12/2012 4:00:47 PM

Heres some more bad news for the Fisker Karma crowd: an owner of the hybrid car returned from a grocery run to find his Karma engulfed in flames, Jalopnik reports. This isnt the first time weve heard of Fisker Karmas erupting into flames seemingly out of the blue, as earlier in May one actually caught a house on fire. Luckily, no one was hurt in this blaze, but needless to say, the expensive car isnt in too good of shape after the incident. The circumstances surrounding the fire, which occurred in Woodside, Califonia, are still unknown. According to the Fire Department, the owner returned to his car to see it billowing smoke and called the manufacturer before dialing 911. Alas, the Woodside Fire Department

couldnt save the car, as a decent portion of the front of the vehicle was destroyed by the time firefighters were able to put the fire out. Last year, Fisker recalled over 200 cars for a poorly-placed hose clamp that could potentially allow coolant to leak onto the battery and cause a fire. With more cars

being added to that recall list in June of this year, its possible that this particular Karma was one of the vehicles that was recalled, but its unknown at the moment if that actually is the case. One Jalopnik reader was able to record a brief video of Woodside firefighters putting out the burning car, which you can see below.

Fisker has since made a statement to Jalopnik, saying that it takes safety seriously and that it still has confidence in the Karma. Fisker will be using its own independent fire investigation representative to get to the bottom of this fire, and will release another statement once the cause is known. Hopefully this

doesnt become a common thing for the Karma, because the car is actually a really sleek vehicle (when it isnt bursting into flames). Stay tuned, and if you own a Karma, you might want to get in touch with Fisker to make sure that your car isnt one of the vehicles that has been recalled. The amazing heart rate app

(Holy Kaw!)
Submitted at 8/12/2012 11:06:00 AM

Remember how your high school gym teacher taught you how to take your heart rate? Yeah, neither do we and never seemed to do it right anyway, but now the great minds at MIT have found a way to let your phone do the hard work without ever having to lay a

finger on it. According to Ariel Schwartz at Fast Company: The [Cardiio] app measures the amount of light reflected off the face, which matches up to the amount of blood pumped into the face (every time the heart beats, more blood is pumped). that of elite athletes (depressing) It also keeps track of your heart and members of the animal rate over time and compares it to

kingdom (kind of weird). Your P.E. teacher might not be happy you forgot their sage advice, but they'll be thrilled you're still working out. Full story at Cardiio via Fast Company. Apps for health. Permalink| Leave a comment

Sometimes life does not want to bring you luck. And sometimes it delivers a perverse sort of justice, one that makes you question just who or what is in control of this world. Such sentiments might have entered the thought systems of Justin Kryzanowski, a 24-year-old man from Pennsylvania, who is said to have patched in an accidental guest to an alleged drug deal. With perhaps the wrong twitch of a cheek or the inadvertent pressure of a jean seam, his cell phone allegedly and independently dialed 911, and police say they listened in to the whole thing. According the the Scranton Times-Tribune, the police not only lent an ear to some interesting purchases but then traced the cell phone back to

Kryzanowski's home. There, they claim to have found all sorts of drug-related substances and tools that lent substance to their accusations. They also allegedly found Kyrzanowski unable to articulate words as clearly as he might, after his alleged purchase. More Technically Incorrect He has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, as well as possessing prohibited weapons. The curse of the cell phone is one that has not yet been sufficiently documented. Cell phones sometimes turn themselves on at the worst possible times, such as weddings, funerals, and drug deals. They are often enablers of overly hasty texting that can destroy the best of friendships and even marriages.

They record one's sometimes illjudged communication for others to pry and criticize. They even make us believe that Wi-Fied face time is as good as the real thing. There is something infinitely sad that, too often, we allow machines -- not people -- to be the ones that betray us or portray us as other than who we really are. App.net hits $500K funding goal nearly two days early

Dalton Caldwell's plea for App.net funding.(Credit: Screenshot by Steven Musil/ CNET) App.net's goal of creating an alternative social network took a big step forward with the announcement that it had achieved the goal of raising $500,000 in a crowd-funding campaign. The project, which seeks to build an open API framework for developers, achieved its Kickstarter pledge goal with almost two days to spare before its deadline, thanks mostly to a last-minute push for new sponsors. More than 7,800 sponsors have

pledged funds for varying membership privileges. A $50 basic membership gives donors an annual membership, while a $1,000 donation gives members access to the developer tools and telephone support. In his plea for funding, App.net founder Dalton Caldwell said the

goal of the project is to "create the service we all wish existed" We're building a real-time social service where users and developers come first, not advertisers. Our team has spent the last 9 years building social services, developer platforms, mobile

applications and more. We believe that advertisingsupported social services are so consistently and inextricably at odds with the interests of users and developers that something must be done. App.net is not the first socialnetworking project to give

Facebook and Twitter a run for their money. Diaspora, a socialnetworking project hatched by four New York University programming students in their early 20s, also tried the microfunding approach a couple of years ago. An earlier version of the network is available at App.net. Apple may become the new sponsor of the UK's Orange Prize for Fiction
Michael Grothaus (TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog)
Submitted at 8/12/2012 7:55:00 AM

The Orange Prize for Fiction is a prestigious literary award in the UK that goes to one outstanding female writer every year. Until this past May the award, officially called the Women's Prize for Fiction, has been sponsored by UK telecoms provider Orange. However, after T-Mobile's merger with Orange earlier this year, the company decided to drop its sponsorship of the prize. Now, according to The Sunday Telegraph, Apple is looking to take over sponsorship of the literary award. The Telegraph story points out that UK sponsorship by Apple is a rare thing. The Cupertino company has only lent its

"iTunes" name to a music festival and an iTV2 music show. But the paper speculates that Apple's presumed interest in the literary prize is to drum up more interest in reading ebooks from its iBookstore. In fact, instead of just switching fruit names from

Orange to Apple, should it win the sponsorship, Apple might forgo the "Apple Prize for Fiction" name all together and could presumably call it the "iBooks Prize for Fiction." The company could then also promote the prize through the iBookstore.

The Sunday Telegraph doesn't provide many more details besides their sources confirming that "Apple has had talks with the award organisers" and that also "a number of companies, including Kobo, the ebook producer, had also indicated their interest but that discussions with Apple were the most advanced." The Orange Prize for Fiction originated in 1996. You can see a full list of winners here. Merkel is widely blamed for not doing enough to keep the eurozone crisis from spreading. However, her hands are tied by constitutional issues as well as political issues within her coalition. Yet, every step of the way Merkel caved in to demands of those desperately attempting to save the unsaveable. Last December, Cameron almost gave in to ridiculous EU treaty changes but did not do so only because he was dead set against preposterous financial transaction taxes proposed by Brussels. Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg Prime Minister and head of the eurozone finance ministers: Juncker is famous for his quote"When it becomes serious, you have to lie". More recently, Juncker told another whopper " I Dont Envisage, Not Even for One Second, Greece Leaving the Euro Area" Mario Monti, technocrat Prime Minister of Italy. Herman Van Rompuy, European Council president: Van Rompuy spends his time flying all over Europe promoting discarded eurobond ideas. He seldom shows up in European Parliament. Jos Barroso, European Commission president: Farage describes Barroso as "delusional idiot and was a supporter of

Chairman Mao" Reflections On Merkel Nigel Farage properly classifies Barroso as a "delusional idiot". The same applies to Herman Van Rompuy, and self-admitted liar Jean-Claude Juncker. In contrast, Chancellor Merkel is anything but a delusional idiot. Rather, Merkel is an extremely skilled, as well as widely respected if not charismatic leader, with a seriously misguided notion there needs to be a European nannyzone super-state. Worse yet, she appears willing to sell her soul and the future of Germany to secure that outcome. As noted above, nothing is more dangerous that ranking politicians on a mission to do the wrong thing, hoping to preserve their legacy. Without a doubt, Merkel's attributes make her the most dangerous politician in Europe. A Note About Nigel Farage Der Spiegel labeled Farage Europe's 7th most dangerous politician. Check out the platform of UKIP, Farage's party. We believe in the minimum necessary government which defends individual freedom, supports those in real need, takes

as little of our money as possible, and doesn't interfere in our lives. I think the Republican Party in the US should adopt that platform and that anything except a platform based on minimal government and individual freedom is dangerous. The Silliest Chart You'll See In The Paul Ryan Debt Plan
Joe Weisenthal (Money Game)
Submitted at 8/12/2012 2:58:00 PM

In order to promote his "Roadmap" for his national debt reduction plan, Wisconsin Representative and Mitt Romney running mate Paul Ryan put out a set of scare charts on what happens if the size of the US debt grows unchecked. The silliest, most meaningless chart of the bunch is this one on Who Owns The National Debt. The message he's trying to convey is clear: More and more the US is going cap-in-hand abroad to fund government spending. The Chinese (whom Mitt Romney has accused of not trading fairly with us) own a huge chunk. Ergo we're at their mercy. This is a popular notion, and a candidate running on a scare platform is wise to tell this story, but the story is nonsense on stilts. China has no financial leverage over the US, and the idea of the government having to go beg foreigners in order to spend US dollars is a myth. The reason China owns boatloads of US debt is because China sells boatloads of goods (literally) to US consumers. And then China is left holding a bunch of US

dollars. And when you're left holding a bunch of US dollars, the national place to put those US dollars is US Treasuries. It really is that simple. It's why Japan (also a huge trading partners) owns a bunch of US debt, and why Brazil (which wasn't even on the chart in 1990), is now also a sizable US debt holder. As you can see in this chart, in the 90s, the US hardly had any imports from Brazil. Now they're

getting to quite substantial, a trend that has been a major boon to the South American economic giant. The essential driver of foreign ownership of US debt is this trend: The boom in global trade, the trade deficit, and the great extent to which foreigners need to recycle a lot of US dollars that they receive. The flipside of the US situation is Japan. Japan famously runs a trade surplus (meaning that on net there

aren't going to be a lot of Yen floating all around the world), and so not surprisingly, its debt is almost entirely domestically owned. Very few foreigners need to recyle Yen into JGB (Japanese Government Bonds). Okay, but what if China decided that after receiving US dollars in payments for various goods and services, it just didn't want to recycle them into Treasuries. Maybe the Chinese decided it wanted to spend those dollars

directly on oil from the Mideast. That's fine too. Then it would be Mideast dollar holders who would recycle them into Treasuries. Eventually the dollars will find their way home, so to speak. And the fact of the matter is that China does reduce its Treasury holdings from time to time. Here's a chart, via Katchum at SeekingAlpha, that's current as of this Spring of Chinese holdings of US debt. The numbers go up and down, but it's totally irrelevant for the US Treasury market. Of all the things to worry about, this is not one. Paul Ryan can breathe easy. And if you really want to get in the weeds on this issue, go check out the paper from Professor Dan Drezner on The Myth of China's Financial Leverage (.pdf). It looks at how China did hope to exert influence over US policy during the financial crisis, and that it was done to no avail and no impact. Please follow Politics on Twitter and Facebook. Brian Belski: Stocks Are Setting Up For A Huge Expansion For Years To Come
Matthew Boesler (Money Game)

BMO chief investment strategist Brian Belski recently made the call that " we're on the verge of the next great bull market" in stocks and put out a super-bullish chartbook explaining his thesis. A lot of talk among commentators lately has focused on the death of equity investing due to the decline in value of the indexes over the past decade or so. In his latest note to clients, Belski writes that is another reason to be bullish on stockssecular bull markets usually are preceded by "lost decades" like the one we just saw. Looks like even Gotye knows his song, "Somebody That I Used to Know," is an overplayed, viral sensation that has spawned an entire genre of YouTube covers. So the singer decided to acknowledge the hundreds of piano-playing, harp-plucking, and guitar-strumming fans who paid tribute to the catchy tune. How? He made a whole new song from the covers. Gotye calls it "Somebodies," and it's just as annoyingly awesome as the original. He's one of the first artists to take covers of their own song, and create new music. David Frum
(David Frum)

Andrew Sullivan complained yesterday that I had engaged in a McCarthyite attack on Ron Paul by writing the following: A politician isnt answerable for the antics of every one of his supporters. But theres surely a reason, isnt there, that racists, anti-Semites, 9/11 Truthers, and Holocaust deniers are so strongly attracted to the Paul campaign. They hear something. They continue to hear it too, no matter how firmly Ron Pauls more mainstream supporters clamp their hands over their own ears. Andrews riposte: Notice how pure the smear is, enabled and not diminished by the first sentence. Notice the key concept of Beltway ideological policemen: there is a mainstream and a non-mainstream. Dabble with the latter at your peril. Since David has perished by the cult of the mainstream, its odd he should deploy it against others. But to throw in Holocaust denial and 9/11 Truthers for good measure! Really. And notice how particularly cheap and easy it is to use such tactics against a libertarian. The traditional left is often based on collective associations, building a movement out of oppressed groups and their grievances, whether it be class or race or even

sexual orientation. Libertarianism is the opposite. Its about dis associating. When you listen to Paul saying he will not turn anyone away from supporting his platform regardless of their motives or beliefs, you are hearing a reflection of his libertarianism, not his bigotry. He will accept support from any quarter and compared with the corporate money flowing into the other candidates coffers, he is about as independent as a presidential candidate can be. Because he is a radical individualist, he doesnt even understand why he should somehow explain the belief of others, or justify their support. You should ask them, not him. This kind of gotcha-association game is particularly easy because libertarians favor liberty above all, and that will necessarily mean liberty for bigots as well as others. A principled belief in states rights will doubtless lead to more racist and homophobic policies in many states but also, of course, more enlightened and successful inclusive states like Oregon or New York or Massachusetts or California. A rejection of statism might lead to more discrimination in the private sector. But it doesnt mandate it. And it need not encourage it. A noninterventionist foreign policy will allow evil to triumph elsewhere in

the world, because it believes its none of our business or too riddled with unintended consequences to try extirpating. That may be right or wrong, but it is not an approval of the evil of Assad or Ahmedinejad or the North Korean junta. And again, it is actually much deeper an American tradition than permanent warfare. But if you can trot out David Duke or Ayatollah Khamenei as potential Paul supporters, you have a very easy, cheap and essentially McCarthyite target. It saddens me that this kind of tactic works. I still believe that the newsletters, because they were in Pauls name, require a clearer explanation from Paul than the muddled ones he has given. He should not be left off the hook. And his proposals deserve a thorough vetting and discussion. But there is something awry when a candidate is assessed not on his arguments and proposals but on the shadiness and ugliness of some of his fringe supporters. Ron Pauls supporters ask that their candidate not be judged by his associates. Or by the people he chose to employ. Or by the newsletters he published. Or by the book he wrote. Or by the way he earned the largest part of his living when out of office in the 1990s. Or by his purchase of the mailing list of the Holocaust-

denying Liberty Lobby. Or by the radio shows he chooses to appear on. Or by his strategic decision to reach out to racist voters. Or by the conspiracy theories to which he lends credence, from government creation of AIDS to Israeli culpability for the 1993 bombing to a putative 9/11 coverup. And here I thought that libertarianism was a doctrine of personal responsibility? May Ron Paul at least be judged by the words he has spoken with his own mouth within the current campaign? The supporters say no again. When Ron Paul tells an interviewer that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made race relations worse, were not supposed to consider what he might mean by better. When Ron Paul warns that a border fence would be used to prevent fleeing American citizens from exiting the country, were not supposed to conclude that hes a paranoid crank. Andrew deploys what might be called the ontological defense of Ron Paul, as follows: 1) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 2) Libertarians espouse individualism. 3) Racism is a form of antiindividualism. 4) Therefore Ron Paul cannot be a racist. That is a demonstration of what

might be called the deductive method of reasoning. But theres another way to study reality: induction. Like this: 1) Ron Paul has again and again exploited bigotry, paranoia, and hate as fundraising devices. 2) Ron Paul is a libertarian. 3) So yes, I guess it is possible for a libertarian to do that. Heres my question for Ron Paul supporters: why the denial of the undeniable? Perhaps you like Pauls message of legalized marijuana? Why not just say so? You dont think its important to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons? Argue it forthrightly. If you regard Social Security and Medicare as literally the moral equivalents of slavery, go ahead, make your case. But all this excuse-making, special pleading and jiggering of the rules of evidence so as to exculpate Ron Paul from the record of his whole political life? For what? Palin: Ryan pick makes this an election of competing visions

Ed Morrissey (Hot Air Top Picks)
Submitted at 8/12/2012 4:01:53 PM

posted at 5:01 pm on August 12, 2012 by Ed Morrissey Yesterday, after some attempt to stir trouble between the Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan campaign and Sarah Palin, Palin herself wrote a lengthy congratulations to Team Romney over the addition of Paul Ryan to the GOP ticket. The selection of the Republican Partys best thinker on fiscal policy and entitlement reform makes it clear that the election will give voters a clear choice between competing visions for the nation. Palin focused mostly on the vision presented by the Obama/Biden ticket, which she accurately describes as California, minus the beautiful scenery and warm weather: Obamas America is todays California complete with $100 billion taxpayer funded bullet trains to nowhere; out of control environmental extremists who have destroyed family farms and left some of the most fertile farm land in America fallow in order to protect a three inch fish; permanent high unemployment; government policies hostile to small business job creators; crippling high taxes; an abysmal real estate market; bloated

government that wastes taxpayer money; endless budget shortfalls due to massive unfunded liabilities; city after city declaring bankruptcy; and a state government run by, in the words of one Wall Street Journal writer, a brothel of environmentalists, lawyers, public-sector unions and legislative bums. We cant afford Obamas vision. Our children cant afford it. Today we are over $15 trillion in debt and running up trillion dollar budget deficits year after year for as far as the eye can see. And our leaders have no plan to stop it! President Obama and this Congress dont even have the fundamental blueprinta budget!to outline where they intend to take us as they merrily roll along with their out of control spending and constant increases of our debt limit. Our debt to China alone is more than we can ever hope to pay off in multiple generations. Such debt and dependence on foreign nations weakens us in countless ways. And yet our government keeps on spending despite the risks and despite conscientious, hardworking citizens telling them to just stop it. Our debt is growing by $3 million per minute. This debt, in conjunction with Obamas massive government over-reaches like Obamacare, has

strangled the private sector, which in turn has stifled job growth and slowed all economic growth. The only way to get our country moving again is to get back to basics like normal people do with our home and small business budgets! That means we must live within our means, get government out of the way of our job creators, develop the God-given natural resources we have been blessed with to provide real jobs and real energy security, and stop growing government and wasting taxpayer money on D.C. cronyism and useless stimulus kick-backs for favored donors. Barack Obamas record is one of dismal failure, which is why he isnt talking about it. He would rather spend his time demonizing his opponents. The simple fact remains that Mitt Romney is not responsible for the dire state of our economy or the corruption and incompetence of the current administration. This is, I believe, why Romney chose Ryan as his running mate: to refocus the election on substance and issues. Already were seeing Obamas surrogates fanning out on the morning talk shows to paint Ryan as antiwoman and anti-working class, but that will change when the debate shifts to Ryans proposals for entitlement reform. To attack

those, Obama and his campaign have to talk specifics, and Ryan will be well prepared for that and as weve seen in the past, more prepared than Obama or his team. As I wrote for CNN in a column published last night, Romney has declared an end to silly season, and will force Obama to start defending his own record: Democrats may be licking their chops, believing that Ryans unpopular budget plan will be a millstone around Romneys neck. However, Democrats would have hung the Ryan plan on Romney no matter who got the VP nod, and no one explains the need for budgetary reform better than Ryan himself. In fact, hardly anyone will talk specifically about how to accomplish budgetary reform. Ryan is one of the few who have risked proposing a roadmap for entitlement reform. Ryans plan looks far past the Taxmageddon or fiscal cliff at the end of this year, to the fiscal gap facing the United States over the next 75 years, where our current path puts us on a trajectory to have $222 trillion more in liabilities than revenue. Barack Obama and the Democratic Party have no serious proposal to deal with long-term debt. The plan Obama has to pay down the debt in a balanced

way would add$6.4 trillion in deficits between 2013 and 2022, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Democrats idea of budgetary reform is to demand an increase in taxes on people making more than $250,000 a year a policy that the Tax Foundation, a research group that favors lower taxes, says would produce $40 billon a year in new revenue, in budgets with trillion-dollar annual deficits. And speaking of seriousness, lets not forget that the Democratic-controlled Senate has gone more than 1,200 days without passing its own budget. Ryan, who chairs the House Budget Committee, has at least fulfilled the legal obligation for annual budget resolutions in the lower chamber, but hes gone far beyond that to provide leadership on the long-term fiscal crisis facing the nation. That contrast led to a confrontation last February between Ryan and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner over the lack of long-term solutions coming from the White House, in which Geithner finally told Ryan, We dont have a definitive solution to the long term problem. What we do know is, we dont PALIN: page 45

like yours More than anything else, the pick of the GOPs top thinker on fiscal policy demonstrates leadership, while Geithners vacuous response in February demonstrates the lack of leadership in the Obama administration. Theyre out of ideas. Romney and Ryan arent. If the campaign comes down to Broad Ideas for Fiscal Reform vs Look A Squirrel, Democrats wont be licking their chops for long. John Tamny at Forbes wrote this weekend that Ryan was the only choice Romney had if he wants to make this election about the economy, and the safest as well: Media accounts will suggest that the Ryan pick had a bold, go-forbroke quality to it, but in truth Ryan was the safest selection of all. He was the safest because in an election all about the U.S. economy, Ryan is the most suited among the names floated to make a strong case for removing the barriers to economic growth erected by Republican (George W. Bush) and Democratic ( Barack Obama) administrations over the last 12 years. Romney himself, though a smashing

success as a businessman, has struggled to make a coherent economic argument; his 59 point economic plan all the evidence one needs that the GOP presidential nominee needs help tightening up what should be a very simple economic message. Paul Ryan could make the above arguments in his sleep, and for being able to, he was the only and once again the safest choice for Romney. This column for quite some time has said President Obamas time in the White House will amount to four years, and the pick of Ryan makes that even more certain. And Timothy Dalrymple makes the case that Romney chose the best man for the actual job, and not just for the campaign: George W. Bush did not choose Dick Cheney because he was a brilliant campaigner; he was not. He chose Dick Cheney because he believed that Cheney would help him govern well. Similarly, Mitt Romney has an eye not only toward winning the power of the presidency, but toward leveraging that power to put American back on a sound financial footing. It always frustrates me when people speak of the calculus of the VP pick solely in terms of

electability. The choice of a Vice President ought to be about more than winning. It ought to be about putting together the best possible team for the good of the country. It ought to be less about doing yourself a favor and more about doing right by the country. With Romneys experience in business and the governors office, and Ryans experience in legislation and budget, they do make a compelling Comeback Team for America as it weathers some of the worst economic storms in generations. Silly season is over. Its time to get back to the serious work of reforming the federal government, and the first reform is making Barack Obama a one-term President. As Switched On discussed a few weeks ago, and as Microsoft noted in its recent 10-K filing, it is an unavoidable truth that the company getting into the hardware market will cause conflict with its partners. Chicago's O'Hare airport bound for Hartford, CT, where Myers' 19 -year-old son Curt was waiting. Dressed somewhat incognito -- in jeans, a casual shirt, a baseball cap, and sunglasses -- the Congressman's trip went completely undetected. Curt then drove Ryan to Myer's house in Brookline, Mass., where he met Romney. The two held a private meeting in her living room, during which Romney offered him the VP slot, and Ryan accepted. "I kind of knew it was going to happen and I was very humbled," Ryan later told reporters on a charter flight to Charlotte, NC, the next stop on a four day bus tour through five swing states. "It was the biggest honor I've ever been given in my life." Romney then returned to his summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, while Ryan received news of the mass shooting and remained behind and contacted

his staff in Wisconsin. He then was driven back to Hartford and flew back to O'Hare, again unnoticed. On Aug. 10, working with his aide Andy Speth, Ryan put in motion the plan that had been carefully scripted. Two airports -- departing from Waukegan, Ill. and arriving in Elizabeth City, N.C. -- had been chosen to usher the soon to be Republican vice presidential pick and his family from their home in Janesville, WI, to the event planned in Norfolk, VA. He left the house with his wife and three kids to attend the memorial service. Following the service, the family split up with his wife and kids heading straight to the airport. Ryan was driven home by his aide, where his sister-in-law was waiting for him. In order to throw off members of the press who had been trailing his every move for weeks, Ryan walked out the backdoor and through woods

behind his house, where he met back up with Speth. The two then sped off to the airport to meet his family, leaving everyone thinking he was still in the house. The plane landed in Elizabeth City completely undetected, where Ryan met up with Myers and other senior Romney staffers at a Fairfield Inn. He made the hour-long drive from North Carolina to Virginia the next morning where he was introduced to America as Romney's running mate. "It's gone from the surreal to the real, I guess."
