G-ID101 ACE: Academic Community Essentials is a one- credit, general education course, required of all first-year freshmen. Text: Thriving in College and Beyond, 2nd edition by Cuseo, Sox Fecas, and Thompson. Course Mission: ACE: Academic Community Essentials at McPherson College integrates first-year freshman students into a safe, healthy community that encourages personal growth while developing the social and academic skills essential to college and vocational success. Course Goals: To familiarize students with the mission and identity of the college To promote students personal growth To help students develop academic success strategies To aid students in creating individual professional success strategies

Course Objectives: Students will Be able to articulate an understanding of liberal arts education at McPherson College Examine McPherson Colleges affiliation with the Church of the Brethren Be familiar with campus resources available to foster their development as whole persons

Be able to identify healthy lifestyle choices and habits that promote their general well- being Begin to develop the skills necessary to establish and maintain successful personal and business relationships Demonstrate an understanding of time- and task-management skills necessary for success in college Learn basic information literacy and study skills Understand their role in and responsibility for their academic achievement Research and learn about prospective career directions Define potential career, academic, and lifetime goals Explore a possible academic major and career opportunities associated with that major

Attendance and Work Completion Policy Students are expected attend every session of ACE and complete all course assignments. Because this is a course aimed at developing best academic practices, this expectation is taken seriously. Any absence for which you have not made arrangements in advance will be considered unexcused and will result in a zero for the day and for any assignments due that day. Late assignments (meaning assignments that you fail to bring to class with you on the date they are due) may be made up for half credit if submitted within one week. Upon your fifth absence from class, you cannot pass the course. Evaluation and Grades
