Living like pigs

Last week Saturday a group of young people were spotted in Burgersfort, picking up rubbish under the leadership of Mr Philip Smit of the Jesus Factor Youth, who also supplied the photographs published on this page. Mr Smit told Platinum Gazette we cleaned the area behind the Dutch Reformed Church Burgersfort and we realized how dirty our town is. Behind the church it looks like a rubbish dump. Burgersfort itself on the whole looks like a rubbish heap and no one cares. These photos were taken at different places in town from Aloe Ridge West to right accross town past the new taxi rank. We were given instruction in the Bible (Gen1:28) to look after this earth, are we? Burgersfort do have a refuse removal service in the town and there is a fully functional landfill site, which is clearly signposted from the main road. During Mandela Day this year a lot of people dedicated their 67 minutes to cleaning the town. It seems that although a small number of people are not content with the situation, the uncontrolled dumping continues unabated. Everybody just do as they wish, without any regard to hygene, other people, fellow residents or the law, just like when they drive in town. The questions remain: Why do we we need law enforcement just to consider what is proper and civilised? Do we actually like to live like pigs and act like barbarians on the roads?

(and we are to blame)

Progress at Bokoni Mine

COSATU Limpopo continued with its mobilisation on mining issues drive during the past week. Last week Friday saw a social dialogue at Nthame Primary School near Burgersfort where local communities in the area which are affected by mining activities, dispossessions, violation of their human rights and social labour plan, had an opportunity for their voices to be heard. The event was attended by several important roleplayers and icluded the COSATU provincial leadership.
Atlatsa Resources CEO Harold Motaung said on Tuesday that the new operational management team had made significant progress at its Bokoni mine since its appointment in February. Reporting on the groups second-quarter and interim performance, he said that the management team led by Dawid Stander had created the necessary mining flexibility through enhanced development efforts and improved employee relations. Motaung stressed that operational performance and cost controls remained critical to the Bokoni mine, especially during a period of prolonged depressed platinum group metals (PGM) prices. The mine increased its PGM production by 20% year-on-year to 34 098 oz in the second quarter and by 23% from the 27 799 oz in the first quarter of 2012, while it lowered its unit costs by 17% quarter-on-quarter to R10 285/PGM oz. Cash operating costs fell to $43.5-million, from $46.3-million in the second quarter of 2011. Revenue from the sale of concentrate for the second quarter was $38.7-million, compared with $35.9-million for the comparative period last year. This increase in revenue was primarily attributable to increased production volumes, but negatively affected by a weakening of the average dollar-basket price by 17% to $1 186/oz when compared to a basket price of $1 430/oz achieved in 2011. Meanwhile, Atlatsa said that it would publish a revised timetable for the implementation of a restructuring plan for Bokoni, once the operational review was completed. It initially planned to implement the restructure plan by July. Atlatsa and Anglo American Platinum are currently reviewing the Bokoni operational plan to determine the most optimal strategic approach for the operations and its ramp-up.

WOMENS MONTH ADVERTORIAL

NEWS

17 AUGUST 2012

Is there still a place for something

Last week on 9 August we celebrated Womens Day and this whole month is in many ways dedicated to honour special women and bring empowerment to women. Althought the rest of the world celebrate Womens Day in March, in South Africa it falls on 9 August in commemoration of 20 000 women who walked to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to hand over a petition against the carrying of passes by women. According to South African History Online, this march, the Womens Charter and the anti-pass campaign became benchmarks in the struggle and continued to inspire decades of women until democracy was finally realized in 1994. Today everyone has equal rights. We asked readers if they feel there is still a place for celebrating Womens Day and Month and whether they feel it is celebrated in the proper way?

Ms Nevia Phasha said: I think there still is a place for Womens Day and Month. I celebrate it in the way it is supposed to. I am involved with empowering women in the community. I thnk people in general know what it is about and celebrate it correctly.

Me.

Ms Lucia Mangwale said: It is important. We must celebrate the month for women. It is not just a holiday.

Mr Andrew Masenya and Mr Johan Lekhuleni said: We think women deserve it. It is no longer fashionable to celebrate Womens Day and Month as it was intended. Maybe we men must do some activities as well during this month - cook, clean and do the domestic things.

Mr Zolani Masondo said: It is important. It is no longer the old days when women were oppressed and we must celebrate it. Not all people celebrate it correctly.

Mr Justice Malepe said: Yes, there is a need to celebrate Womens Day and Month. Men must respect women. That is the way. Celebrating is important. In general people dont respect women enough.

Ms Kabelo Magabane and Ms Sophy Maepa said: Ja, we enjoy this month. Men are now respecting and spoiling us. These days it is just a holiday when people celebrate Womens Day.

Mr Johannes Moagi said: As long as women from all walks of life, irrespective of their politics come together it is good. It is important to celebrate it.

Mr Simon Masinga said: I think it is necessary because we think about the past and it will help us to correct everything in the future. The celebrations has however missed their direction. People dont respect time and they dont do the relevant activities on Womens Day.

Mnr.

NUUS

like Womens Day and month?

Me. Augusta Smith s: Dit gaan by my verby. Die lewe is so n gejaag.

Mr Papie Makgate and Mr Ludwig Waterson said: We should celebrate Womens Day not only in this month, but right through the year. Ludwig: I give my mom coffee every morning and massage her feet when she wants to.

Mr Thabo Mosoma said: Ja, it is very important. Women must be empowered and I think we celebrate it in the right way.

Ms Florence Modingwane said: Yes, we are celebrating Womens Month. I even have a little badge to show as well. I think we are celebrating it in the right way. Mnr. Hennie Stoop s: Dis alles geldmaakstories. As n mens se lewe reg is, is dit elke dag Valentynsdag, Vrouedag, Vadersdag ens.

Mr Simon Molobela and Mr Gadson Komane said: It is not celebrated the way it is expected. Today they are just having a holiday on Womens Day. Schools should help with awareness about Womens Day and Month. What is important is employment equity - it should be implemented. Perhaps they should during this month give all posts to women. Women must also come together without politics. Enable all women to come together and share ideas.

Mnr.

Ms Tebogo Makofane said: We still celebrate it. People celebrate it as it is intended. With her are Mpho and Basetsana.

Me. By haar is Megan.

Last week Saturday, Ohrigstad hosted the Boet Fick Super League games against Noordelikes from Polokwane. Noordelikes is one of the two big clubs in Polokwane and is currently at the top of the log. The second game of the day was the Winterveld Rugby Club (Buffels), against Noordelikes. It was a devastating first half for the Buffels with 3-32 on the score board. The second half however proved to be much better after a change of game plan and a few replacements. Well done boys, lets end the season this coming Saturday on a high note when we take on Louis Trichardt on the Winterveld rugby field, Charl added. This game will start at 15:00. He also thanked the following sponsors who are making it possible for the team to participate: Pick n Pay Steelpoort, Mopane Caf, Precrete and the AFM Church in Steelpoort for the use of their bus. The third game of the day was between Loskop Rugby Club and Noordelikes. Some of the Buffels players helped out for the Loskop side.

The local rugby clubs faced the leaders of the log, Noordelikes in Ohrigstad last week Saturday. The Ohrigstad Rugby Club played in orange and green while the Winterveld Rugby Club played in the blue and grey. Noordelikes played in striped red and black gear.
