ACE TEAM LEADERS Guidelines

(made up by former ACE Team members!)

Meetings: Be on time! Room buddy system is a good way to use as a reminder for being on time One person talks, everyone listens Express concerns of the day with Group Advisor and feel free to ask team for ideas Be succinct when speaking Discuss key events of next day with full group Use roommates to share questions Specific details can be discussed with your assigned Advisor after full group meeting Aspects of the evening discussions will be led by various members of the ACE team Use ACE Advisors whenever you need to Respect those leading Amanda and Viv will ask various leaders to lead specific topics Post Meetings 11:30pm 1:00am Leave meeting quietly Use common sense when socializing Set an alarm on cell phone for morning Respect those that wish to go to sleep early Those knowing they like to cut the socializing earlier will be put together as roommates Socialize in rooms and/or LOUNGE room Avoid hallways as others will be sleeping 1:00 am is the time everyone must be in own rooms Time Spent with Students Make the effort to be involved and engaged with students Make them comfortable Find out what members of your group do in their everyday life, etc. Treat your students as adults not little kids Set an example that will leave positive memories with your students Build a good bond and relationship with your students Remember: after hours you are the leaders setting the example and they are students Treat your team members as if they are your friends but keep control of the group Meal Time Try to sit with the delegates during breakfast and dinner (i.e. a couple of Ace leaders with a bunch of students) Avoid tables full of Ace Team members (i.e. avoid being cliquey) Engage students in fun conversations during meal time and talk to them about their thoughts on speakers etc. Try also to connect with guests having meals! Be a Mentor!

FUTURE ACES: A Conference Empowering Students

ACE TEAM LEADERS PAGE What iffrom your training ideas

A) During your entire first group session, one of the delegates refuses to listen to you. Whenever any of the group leaders, teachers or other delegates speaks, she talks over them and says, No. As team leaders of Respect, you become frustrated. Solutions: Address the problem with the delegate privately. Listen to their needs and concerns. Accommodate within reason - could be tired, bored, oldest student, home problems, etc. Respond in a respectful and mature manner. If problem persists, speak to Group Advisor. Treat them as equals, not as kids. Invite someone (leader/advisor) to the session to identify issues and look for solution. Do not point out individuals. B) Its time to prepare for Future Aces Idol! Your team, Service, has been given the theme of Justin Bieber/Lady Gaga. One of the delegates claims to know every Bieber and Gaga fact out there and refuses to let any other team member contribute. The same delegate has been taking over and constantly interrupting during your previous sessions. Solutions: Before, ensure every student knows they will have their time to speak - Hands up policy. Or you can use a ball/symbol and establish a rule that one person with ball can speak. After, appreciate their enthusiasm. Ask if they are having any trouble sitting or listening/interacting individually. Suggest a less disruptive way to contribute. C) Its your second group session with Team Courage and during the discussion of Matt Evans presentation, you notice that one of the delegates is very shy and passes every time it is his turn to speak. He always looks down when he speaks and his body language is closed in (arms crossed, back caved in, etc.). Solutions: Approach the student after the session. Find out their strengths/areas to grow in. Utilize his strengths in the conferences activities (i.e. Amazing Aces, Idol, Evening Rec, Discussion etc.). Find an alternative form of expression. Share personal experience to relate to him. Put him with a stronger or more talkative person making him see that he has the ability to be a leader. Share your own experience of shyness or inexperience. Give praise and encouragement. D) During your group session with Team Ability, two of your delegates become well acquainted and team up on you. Whenever you present an activity to do they say, This is dumb. They roll their eyes whenever you say Future Ace. Solutions: Let them sit apart. (Make an activity where everyone switches seats.) Give them a warning on the side. If persistent, go to your team advisor. Ask them privately why they think its dumb and how we can improve the activity. Get feedback. Delegate responsibilities/tasks. Explain what Future Aces means. If delegates show disinterest, remind them about evaluations - the chance to give feedback . E) Its time for the Amazing Ace and your group, Team Sportsmanship, is all pumped everyone except one of your delegates who has been excluded from the rest of the group. Although this delegate actively participates during group discussions and is helpful, the delegate is often put down with whispers of being annoying. Solutions: Talk to them privately (i.e. say Youre my assistant). Encourage them to talk to their peers (TEAM BUILDING). Guideline: give other delegates a chance to speak but politely (i.e. use ball passing strategy). Dont discourage the energetic person - channel it into something positive. I am so impressed with you.... Make them feel special. Divert attention without putting the other person on the spot. Encourage everyone to speak, keeping in mind their right to pass.

12:30pm Bus Welcome, Registration & Scavenger Hunt ACE Team Leader BUS GREETERS Sally, Nathan, Kruti and Jasma take one bus each and Sean (Subliminal) as ACE MAN visits all! Watch for bus arrival (Be ready!) Get on bus, make big fuss Call teacher one by one to step off bus to meet their school host ACE Leader Play bus games etc. until all hosts come back to get students When bus is empty, help with luggage dispersal Examples of Games: Name Game Tell them your name is...and you likeExample: I am Vivian and I like vases. Next person says she is Vivian and she likes Vases. I am .and I like The first initial of the name needs to match with the first initial of the object. The trick is to see if the person can remember the name of the person that went before! Stand-Up Sit-Down To get them moving on the bus (without getting off) call out various things and have the students alternately standup and sit-down. Things to call out include: wearing (or not wearing) a colour, having a certain letter in their first name, a kind of pet that they have owned, etc. Be creative and have them moving quickly to get the blood flowing again after a long ride. Im Going to Horseshoe This game is played by starting off with I am going to Talisman, and I am going to bring Start off with any object. Then ask a student what they are going to bring to Talisman. Choose a student, ask them to stand up, say their name, and tell what they are going to bring to Horseshoe. The next item needs to start with the last letter of the previous object. For example: I am bringing an apple, the student is bringing an elephant, the next student brings a towel, etc. If the student brings the right thing then tell them that Yes, you can come to Horseshoe If not, tell them that they cant come and move on to the next student. ACE Team Leader SCHOOL HOSTS Have your poems, pipe cleaners for suitcases and Scavenger Hunt sheets ready! Welcome teacher; host them to registration (pg 18) Go back to bus with teacher to get students Supervise luggage removal and give each student their pipe cleaner to put on their luggage Read poem to your group (or have a student read it or all students read together) Walk with students and teacher to rooms Remind students to put on lanyards and t-shirts Meet school delegates in assigned area in hall near rooms. Hand out Sc Hunt sheet to one student. Take all of your group on Scavenger Hunt Bring group to their circle area in Alpine Room and get them settled Work out Scavenger Hunt Message and have one student take sheet to ACE MAN Hand out cookies for each in your group Invite them to go to area to get fruit/juice/hot chocolate/water (teachers coffee is in separate area) Stay with group for first set of ACEMAKERS

FUTURE ACES: A Conference Empowering Students

A Message from the Future Aces Team

The Future Aces Philosophy was created by Herbert Carnegie in 1956. It has become a character-building model for thousands of people that can help develop the self-knowledge and self-confidence that can enable each of us to take control of our lives and to use our abilities in a positive way. During this three-day conference, we welcome and invite you to explore your talents and abilities. We hope that this will lead you through a journey of self-awareness and give you an opportunity to learn and grow so that you too will strive to make a difference in your own life and the lives of others. We thank the youth leaders, Future Aces Scholarship Recipients and Conference Planning Committee who have diligently worked for months to plan this learning experience. We extend our appreciation to the organizations and corporations, as well as the administration and superintendents of TDSB who have donated funds to ensure the success of this event. We encourage all students to give a heartfelt thank you to their staff advisors who have generously donated their personal time so that you can enjoy this inspirational opportunity. With our partnerships with the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Toronto District School Board, the Foundation can continue this valuable work with youth. A huge thank you goes out to our speakers and workshop presenters who have generously donated their time to share their experiences and knowledge. Your participation is a stepping stone on the journey of life that will be treasured by all. We hope all our participants have an enjoyable and rewarding time as you make new friends, share new ideas and use your new-found knowledge to benefit others. ACE TEAM LEADERS PAGE Friday November 12, 2010 1:30 - 3:15p.m.
1:30 3:15 Welcome, Introduction and Ace Makers (Alpine)
Participate in ACE Makers with students (See below) SCHOOL ACEMAKERS: BULL IN THE RING Students sit in a group around their teacher. As ACE Man calls out different questions, the students have to give the answer to their teachers who then stand on the chair. ACE Man picks first teacher standing and if the/she answers correctly, the school wins a prize. Questions involve Goals, Guidelines, safety and emergency procedures. * AT this point, teachers convene in Fairway for a meeting FULL GROUP ACEMAKERS: CARD CONCENTRATION Students move the chairs from Bull in the Ring to a big circle running around the room. Students then mingle together to find who has a matching card to theirs. Then the pair goes to an ACE Leader who has raffle tickets and extra cards. The students tell the ACE Leader each others names and something about themselves. The ACE Leader takes both cards, and gives a raffle ticket to each student and a different card to each. FRUIT SALAD ACE Man assigns fruits to the students (by grade) and then calls out the different fruits in random order. When their fruit is called, students get up and switch chairs, and learn the names of their neighbours. When Fruit Salad is called everyone gets up and changes seats. SMALL GROUP ACEMAKERS
Several strategies will be used and called out to group students in different ways 1. month of birth, 2. favourite clour, 3. favourite vacation spot, 4. favourite subject in school

Be ready to hold up your signs and manage a group through these: SLAP & POINT: First go around the group, everyone saying their name. You stand in the centre of the circle slapping your hands and pointing to a student. That student ducks as the two students beside him/her slap and point at each other saying the other persons name. Whoever says the correct name first wins the round. The other goes to the centre and slap-points at a student and it starts all over again. TWISTED SISTER: Everyone stands in the circle and joins hands with two different partners that they are not standing beside. Freeze! When Ace Man calls out Unwind, get back to normal without letting go of hands. SOMETHING IN COMMON: With a moderate sized group, try to find one thing in common amongst all of you. Think its that easy? Try it! ALPHA NAME: (IF TIME)Everyone in the group has to lineup quickly in alpha order of their first name without saying a word, form a straight line and then sit down quickly! Ace Man now introduces students to their name card and the attribute word! Mad scramble as all kids and find their group! LEADERSHIP GROUP ACEMAKER WISH FOR THE WORLD - Everyone sits in a circle. 1:15 3:00 Ace Team Group Session Three (meet in Alpine Room) The Amazing Ace A Cooperative Event for Sportsmanship A team building challenge
Group Leaders Lead your groups through the events and cheer! My event is: Rec Leaders

Remind them to give each other encouragement and support to receive Do your Thang! Example Point List of Activities 1. B-ball Challenge: REC Leader: Kris / Stanford Teams line up at the free-throw line. Each team receives one basketball. Objective is to score as many free-throws as possible. Both teams begin shooting at the same time, on the same net. After a person shoots, they must retrieve their own ball and pass it back to their team. Taking the other teams ball, or deliberately throwing it away should result in NO sportsmanship points, and possibly two unobstructed shots by the other team. Materials: Two basketballs 2.Mini Golf Putt: REC Leader: Karen There are circles around the putting hole that will reap a score 1, 2, 3. If the ball lands in the hole it is scored as 5. Each team member uses a putter to see how close they can get their golf ball to or in the hole and a score is kept. The team with the highest score wins. Materials: Two putters and 6 golf ballsProvided by Horseshoe 3. Tug-o-War: REC Leader: Reegina Teams play Tug of war. Best two out of three wins (if theyre really fast, best out of five) Materials: One big, long, strong ropeProvided by Horseshoe 4. Snack and Photo Op: REC Leader: Dianne Knox, Wendy Materials: Snacks & DrinksProvided by Horseshoe 5. Ladder Ball: REC Leader: Amelia Team members take turns throwing the ball on a rope onto a rung of a ladder. The higher the rung, the higher the score. The team who scores the highest at the sound of the finish time, wins.. Materials: Two Ladder Ball equipment pieces - Provided by Horsehoe 6. Planks: REC Leader: Devindra Team race where each team is divided into three 4-person groups. The first groups place their feet in the foot-holes on the boards, holding on to the rope. When the race starts, they must move the planks as a team to the finish and turn around. The second group steps into the foot-holes and moves back to the start, turning around. The third group steps in and finishes the race. The team that gets to the finish line the second time first wins. Materials: Two sets of planksProvided by Horseshoe

List of Activities (contd) and Scoring 7. Up in the Air: REC Leader: Insiya Each team forms its own circle and tries to keep the ball up as long as possible (similar to volleyball lifts). Each time the team has to start over again it is counted. Team with the LOWEST score wins!!

Materials: Two beach balls

8. The Lanyard Line Spooner: REC Leader: Jordan Each team forms a line. First person takes a lanyard line to be pulled in one sleeve through the other to the next member of the team to do the same. As soon as the first member is done, that person runs the course with a spoon and golf ball. If the golf ball is dropped they must pick up and try again from spot where dropped. When team member returns, the golf ball is given to the next team member, from spoon to spoon. Fist team with both tasks completed that sits down on the ground wins!! Materials: Four & 2 golf ballsProvided by Horseshoe; 2 sets of 3 lanyards tied together At the end of each event, the ACE Team Group leader gives the score card to Rec Leader in charge of the event. The Rec Leader awards points as follows: Ability: A point to the team who wins the event Cooperation: A point to the team(s) if they work together as a team Example: A point to the team(s) who cheered their members and were polite Sportsmanship: A point to the team(s) who congratulate the other team, give favourable c comments, and do not argue with the Rec leaders call or each other. Questions to ask: What did they possess that helped them along the way? How were having different attributes and values responsible for what they accomplished in life? Compare each to the statements in the creed. Examples: Matt used his courage to become more confident. Herb used ability and service. What was LazyLegzs strength? And how does this relate to the creed? etc. Fill in the chart or have a student do the recording of answers on the chart 2. Personal Attribute Reflections Activity: 10 min. Post 4 charts around room and have all group members go to the letter that A C E S best represents an attribute that they have developed at this conference. At the chart have them sign name, or draw hand and put name on or anything else creative. Keynote Make Attitude Your Friend

No matter where you go or how far you run your attitude always goes with you. Herb Carnegie was often seen surrounded by students of all ages following his presentations that inspired and encouraged young people to make positive lifestyle choices. His autobiography, A Fly in a Pail of Milk, shares his story of being an outstanding hockey player in a top semi-professional league in the 40s and 50s. Unfortunately, he was denied his chance to play in the NHL because of the racial barriers of the time. He is living proof that a positive attitude opens doors of opportunity. Following hockey, he went on to a successful business career as a financial planner with Investors Group. He has been recognized for his commitment within the community, having received seven medals for community service including the Order of Canada. He has been inducted into ten Halls of Fame, is featured in two Spiderman Comic Books as a real-life comic book character, has been honoured by the City of Toronto by having his name on a recreation centre, and was recognized by Investors Group and the York Regional Police, both establishing Herbert H. Carnegie Community Service Awards to be given to employees who display exemplary standards in their career and community. Because he continued to lead by example he was appointed Honorary Chief of Police for York Region and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from York University. He believes there is always room to make a difference. In 2008, York Region District School Board named the Herbert Carnegie Public School in his honour. Dr. Carnegies proudest accomplishment is his creation of the Future Aces Philosophy a characterbuilding philosophy that benefits more than 100,000 students annually. On November 8th this year, Herb Carnegie turned 91!

Keynote Meeting Challenges, Making Choices

"One of the greatest tragedies of our times - the death of the imaginations. " (John Guare, from the play Six Degrees of Separation) If we go back in time to when we were little, we can see the huge obstacles, challenges, and difficulties we have overcome. Today's challenges always seem too large to tackle so we let those challenges pass us by and we sometimes never experience our own true potential. Be original, be creative, get involved. Matt John Evans is an actor, comedian and educator who has worked with youth programs across Canada for over 17 years. As the Provincial Co-ordinator for OSAID (Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving) for over ten years, he knows how serious his message is. His mandate is to develop youth leadership skills across the province and to promote safe and responsible decision making among teenagers with an emphasis on road safety. Matt has won four best actor awards from the Western Ontario Drama League. He stars in the movie Black Swan, and also appears in the exciting Viking epic Beowulf and Grendel and the indie release Things to Do. He has also been in TV series such as Daring & Grace and Highlander, the Raven. Matt uses his stand up comedic sense of humour to make his serious points about meeting challenges and making choices.

Keynote Playing With the Long End of the Stick

June the 9th 1999 was the day Paul Rosen will always remember. It was the day he had his right leg amputated. It was also the day his life began. Over the last six years Paul has learned that you can do anything if you believe in yourself and never give up. Dreams can come true. He is living proof! Paul Rosens experience as a standing goaltender has greatly helped him to adapt and excel quickly in the sport of Sledge Hockey. After only two short years in the sport, Paul achieved his goal and was named to Canadas National Team for the Paralympic Games in Salt Lake City, 2002. Years of experience as a national level coach in standing hockey provided him with an excellent ability to read plays. Paul is a very vocal member of the team and likes to chat with his teammates on the ice and direct them during the play. Paul and his team were thrilled to win the Gold Medal in the 2006 Paralympic Games in Turino, Italy!

Freestyle Soccer is an awesome display of acrobatic and athletic moves performed with a soccer ball. The combination of creativity, imagination, and ball control provide an amazing display of soccer tricks and live entertainment. This Freestyler will share soccer tricks and stories that will inspire you to respect people around you, motivate you to participate in a healthy lifestyle, and influence you to practice discipline and build character while having fun. Jaime Magnet Bruno was born in Lima, Peru. He has been freestyling for just over two years. While doing shows, youth would ask him if the ball or his shoes had magnets inside of them. That was the root of the nickname Magnet. After only one year of training, he participated in the 2009 RedBull StreetStyle competition and came in second! Jaime then represented Canada in Cape Town South Africa at the 2010 World RBSS Freestyle Soccer Competition!

Keynote You Can Make a Difference!

Timea will talk about her own personal story of surpassing her own challenges of having been a survivor of human trafficking. She will discuss what motivated her to give back to the community in order to help others escape from human trafficking and find their way back to living a free life. She will inspire you to champion your own ideas in the process of your own growth with the aim of positively influencing those around you. You have the power to make a difference! Timea Nagy was born in Hungary. Before she turned 20 years old, in the summer of 1998, she accepted a job as a housekeeper/nanny in Toronto. When she arrived in Toronto, her employers kidnapped her, controlled her, kept her under horrible conditions and forced her to work in the sex trade industry in the GTA. She miraculously escaped that August and soon began working with the Canadian police forces to clean up the industry. Timea recently establish Walk With Me, a charitable organization that helps human trafficking victims in Canada and overseas. The organization provides appropriate victim support, 24/7 mobile crisis counseling, as well as educational seminars. Timea also provides training for law enforcement to identify victims of human trafficking and advocates on behalf of human trafficking victims worldwide. She continues to build public awareness as well as empower citizens, government agencies and law enforcement to combine forces to wipe out human slavery. She has also published her book: Memoirs of a Sex Slave Survivor. Through the telling of her own difficult journey and the personal healing and forgiveness that followed, Timea hopes to inspire others to rise above victimization and lead joyful and purposeful lives in spite of difficult circumstances. She is a living example of grace in action.

She will give you tips and ways to become philanthropic leaders in your community and explain her challenge and how you can get involved. She hopes that everyone will want to become involved in her Lemon-Stock, which will prove what can be done when teenagers get together to make this world a better place! Amanda Belzowski is 13 years old and for the past 12 years she has had a lemonade stand in support of The Heart and Stroke Foundation. So far, she has raised over $150,000 and wants to teach kids of all ages that you are never too little to do something big for the world. Amanda has now included her four-year-old brother Joshua in her fundraising. She has spoken at many schools, businesses and universities across Ontario, including Queens University, the University of Toronto, and the Toronto Stock Exchange. Amanda was asked to be the Ambassador for the Power of the Hour Campaign which included over 200 big companies from across Canada. She and her family were also invited down to Walt Disney World to be a part of their Give a Day, Get a Disney Day volunteering campaign. Through teaching, volunteering and workshops, Kathleen is committed to improving selfesteem, diminishing bullying situations occurring in schools and exploring creativity in every individual. 2. Gugulethu Youth Radio Be the first school in the world to commission a podcast/radio show from Gugulethu Youth Radio, and help build pride, confidence and leadership in young learners from one of the poorest areas of South Africa. JoAnne Fishburn has 15 years experience working on feature films and documentaries. Her projects have taken her to many places around the world. In 2008, she founded All Living Things, a UK-based social enterprise dedicated to using media for social change. The companies first project, Fezekas Voice (www.fezeka.com), an award-winning documentary, tells the story of one mans dedication to using the power of music to build pride and confidence in the children of his township Gugulethu, one of South Africas poorest regions. Witnessing the lack of opportunities for these young people, in 2009, JoAnne founded Gugulethu Youth Radio, an after-school community project that trains students to write, record and produce their own radio podcasts, giving them the power and skills to share their stories with other young people around the world. JoAnne is also passionate about the environment and is involved with raising awareness to protect the planet, through her work with OneClimate.Net, and All Living Things. Having grown up in Ontario, JoAnne now lives in London, England. 3. Peace Tree Create a Peace Tree and organize peace/diversity initiatives. Hirad Zafari is a young male who has a keen interest in promoting peace and diversity in schools and communities. He believes children and youth are the ones who can create a significant change to unite people of all backgrounds. He became a peace tree ambassador as he felt very passionate to empower young people to promote peace through the peace tree spirit. His main hobby is soccer and he represents both his school team and his club team. 4. World Vision Plan events to support World Vision! World Vision is a non-profit, development, relief and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. Michelle Morrison decided to work for World Vision Canada so that she could help make a difference in the world. Learning more about the programs and outcomes while working for World Vision has proved to her that no goal is impossible when people make the decision to come together to help others in need. The opportunities to effect positive change as leaders in this global society are endless

To every person there comes that special moment when he is tapped on the shoulder to do a very special thing unique to him. What a tragedy if that moment finds him unprepared for the work that would be his finest hour. WINSTON CHURCHILL

Judy Leroux is committed, with the Youth Without Shelter Team, to ending homelessness one youth at a time, one step at a time. In her role as Development Manager, Judy works with the community to raise awareness of the realities of youth homelessness. Judys career has encompassed progressive roles within the banking industry, community volunteer leadership, and youth focused charitable associations. Judy has been inspired in her career by this quote from the anthropologist Margaret Mead: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, its the only thing that ever has. 6. Future Aces Coin Drives Raise money through enjoyable, school based activities to help deserving students afford to go to college or university. Joy Foster, an accomplished Motivational Speaker, Writer and Career Coach, helps unlock the invisible door that so often stands between people and their ultimate personal and professional goals. How Has this Conference Affected You?

Herb Carnegie first wrote the Future Aces Creed for himself and his Future Aces Hockey School. Notice that he started each statement with I to help himself! He continued to adapt it as a positive force for good in other areas of the community. He had a vision: Develop a positive self concept and the doors will open to a richer fuller life for everyone. Ask yourself an I question ...

How have I been affected in one or more of these areas by this conference?
