Heavy Vehicle Bypass

The rst opportunity for public consultation on the proposed Heavy Vehicle Bypass for Cowra will be held at the Cowras Heavy Vehicle Bypass 59 Kendal Street Shopfront (corner of Kendal and Macquarie Streets) from 4pm to 7pm on Monday, 27 August. Council staff and expert trafc consultants from GHD will be available at the shopfront to discuss ideas and issues, and to gather information to assist the early stages of the study. All members of the public are invited to attend the shopfront and provide their ideas for new routes for heavy vehicles. A brief feedback form will be available at the shopfront for local residents who wish to comment or offer suggestions. Council also intends to provide an informative display at the Cowra Show to be held on 11 and 12 September, again seeking feedback and ideas. Following this rst stage of consultation, GHD will develop Bypass proposals for further consideration by Council in November. It is then intended to publicly exhibit Bypass proposals, which is likely to run over the December/January period. All submissions received will be reported to Council for review, prior to the adoption of any Bypass proposal. It is requested that feedback forms be Have Your Say! Monday August 27, 4-7pm returned to Council no later than 14 September.

Low-level bridge limit reduced
Following recent inspections by independent assessors; the Low Level Bridge load limit has been reduced from seven tonnes (7t) to four tonnes (4t) until further notice. This reduction is in place immediately and without exception. This will impact on vehicles above the size of a table-top and will not affect passenger vehicles.

New doors have been installed at the Cowra Library and a secure undercover After Hours Returns chute is now available for use located to the right hand side of main entrance. Two new electronic resources are now available through the Central West Librarian Caroline Eisenhauer Libraries. They are: Transparent Language Online and OneClick Audio Books. with the new automatic doors They are easily accessed by visiting the Central West Libraries website at www.cwl.nsw.gov.au and having your library card ready. The National Year of Reading continues to inspire the community to become active readers. During August the theme is Question. The Recipe Club was held and many questions were answered as the group looked at hint and tips, online resources and books which helped to solve cooking problems. The next Book Club meeting will be The Classics on Tuesday 28 August at 12.30pm till 1.30pm. Everyone is invited to drop in and participate in the Book Clubs or contact the Library for more details. An Australia-wide initiative for The National Year of Reading is The Reading Hour to be held on Saturday 25 August from 6-7pm. Everyone is being encouraged to read something, anything, for this hour. Its a bit like Earth Hour. See what a dierence you can make. Some ideas are: read to your children, host a reading party, read questions at a quiz night or read what you have just borrowed from the Cowra Library. Visit us and enquire about membership- its free. A reminder that Monthly Story time is held between 11am and 12 noon on the rst Thursday of each month for children aged birth to 6 years. The next session will be on Thursday 6 September. During the sessions, children experience a variety of stories, rhythm and rhyme, music, games and a craft activity.

Australian Day nominations

Nominations for Cowras Australia Day 2013 awards open on September 1. Awards include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year, and the Dr Warren Wiley Memorial Award. Phase Two of the Safe Seniors project is currently open for applicants. Residents have until 31 Friday August to apply for Phase Two of the funding; which will be the nal phase. Next Exhibition: ARCHIBALD PRIZE 2012: New South Wales Regional Tour
From 1 September to 14 October the Cowra Regional Art Gallery is hosting one of Australias most prestigious art exhibitions, the Archibald Prize. The exhibition includes a number of paintings from this popular Australian portrait competition including major prize-winners. Established in 1921 JF Archibalds primary aims were to foster portraiture, support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians. Among many controversies, these aims have certainly been fullled; it is commonly held that the Archibald Prize has done more than any other single event to stimulate and sustain public interest in the art of portrait painting in Australia. The opening night for the ARCHIBALD PRIZE 2012 in Cowra is Friday 31 August commencing at 6:30pm at the Cowra Civic Centre in the main foyer (doors will be open from 6:00pm) with nger food provided by the Friends of the Gallery and complementary award winning wine by Rosnay. The ofcial opening speeches commence at 6.45pm with a welcome by Cr Bill West, Mayor, Cowra Shire Council and guest speaker Anne Flanagan Deputy Director, Art Gallery of NSW, who will open the exhibition. On the night guests will have the opportunity to win one of several LUCKY DOOR prizes including a one year Country Individual Membership to the Art Gallery Society of NSW, a special Rosnay Wine and Food Hamper, or voucher from Tommy Jeffs and the Imperial Hotel. The winners will be announced at 7.15pm. A special preview for guests of the 41 nalists in the exhibition at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery will commence at 7.30pm including a special oor talk by Tim Storrier, winner of the 2012 Archibald Prize. Darling Street will be closed (from 5pm -10pm) on the opening night to allow guests to move freely between both venues when open. Tickets are $15 and available now from the Cowra Regional Art Gallery at 77 Darling Street or on the opening night at the Civic Centre from 6pm.
